EIGHT PAINTINGS Starting with photography – used as a tool much like thumbnail sketches – notations and glances taken from the landscape are adjusted, manipulated, scaled and generally twisted to my needs. Initially quickly sketched in, these paintings pull free from the photographic, with only cursory reference back to the original source as each image develops and they take on their own peculiar and individual painted character. While recent works have displayed anthropomorphic attributes, riverbanks awash with debris and odd juxtapositions of natural and built form, these new paintings concentrate on the innate and multifarious formal qualities of individual remnant and exotic trees in the landscape, each bathed in a curious and refulgent light. They are ‘details’ from the wider environment, bewildering in its organic form. Andrew Browne September 2013
