Julio Verne nació el 8 de febrero del año 1828 en Francia. Tenía cuatro hermanos y era hijo de unos navegantes de raíz escocesa.

Su infancia fue tranquila hasta que a los once años intentó embarcarse en un barco con destino a la India. Su padre le encontró en el último momento, reprimiéndole y haciéndole prometer que jamás intentaría volver a marcharse ni viajar.

Julio seguía pensando en la aventura y en explorar otros lugares, incluso aunque sus planes se cancelasen de esa manera y sufriendo el castigo de su padre de estar encerrado y solo alimentado de pan y agua.

Desde los ocho años empezó a estudiar en el seminario de SaintDonatien. Más tarde viajó a París para estudiar filosofía y leyes, porque su padre deseaba que siguiera el oficio familiar: ser abogado. Empezó a escribir algunos poemas y obras de teatro que no tuvieron demasiado éxito, así que finalmente se dedicó a ser profesor.

Consiguió un trabajo como agente de bolsa y empezó a viajar. Visitó Inglaterra, Escocia, Noruega y Escandinavia, y aunque la mayor parte del tiempo tenía que ocuparse de su trabajo también encontraba algún momento para continuar sus escritos.

También se casó con una viuda llamada Hebe du Fraysse, que tenía dos hijas. Con ella tuvo a su hijo Michel Verne.

Gracias a los viajes que había hecho y a su interés por la revolución industrial y la tecnología, fue capaz de imaginarse objetos que aún no se habían creado y que él podía describir perfectamente, como: cohetes, submarinos, helicópteros y hasta el aire acondicionado.

ANÁLISIS El personaje principal de la novela llamado Michel Dufrenoy, se licencio en literatura y estudios clásicos pero debe darse cuenta que en este mundo del futuro sólo cuentan los negocios y la tecnología. El era una persona muy apasionada por el arte y era muy soñadora. Vivía con su tío Boutardin una persona muy respetable.

Al día siguiente de su graduación Boutardin le hace saber a Michel que debe empezar a trabajar en una empresa bancaria pero duda que su sobrino sea capaz de algo en el mundo empresarial.

El resto del día Michel va en busca de libros de autores clásicos pero las librerías ofrecen nada más que los libros de tecnología . Su último recurso sigue siendo la biblioteca Imperial.

Resulta que el bibliotecario es su tío el señor Huguenin cuya existencia le había estado oculta durante mucho tiempo. Este tío que todavía trabaja en las artes es considerado una vergüenza por el resto de la familia por lo tanto fue condenado y no pudo asistir a los cumpleaños de Michel, ni en las ceremonias de graduación y otros eventos familiares. Esta es la primera vez que realmente se encuentra.

Tanto Quinsonnas como Michel sueñan en ser soldados pero eso es imposible para ellos ya que la guerra se ha convertido en algo tan científico que no hay absolutamente ninguna necesidad de soldados y sólo se necesitarían químicos y mecánicos para trabajar.

A ellos se les niega esta profesión porque las máquinas de guerra se han vuelto tan efectivas que la guerra es inconcebible.

Muy rápidamente Michel y Lucy se enamoran.

Michel habla de mujeres con quinsonnas quien explica con tristeza que las mujeres reales ya no existen. El trabajo industrial repetitivo y aturdidor, la preocupación por el dinero y la ciencia han hecho que la mayoría de las mujeres se vuelvan cínicas, feas, obsesionadas con su carrera.

• Quinsonnas: Tiene 30 años de edad. Es un Contandor que trabaja con Michel. Tiene una personalidad parecida a Michel ya que los dos eran grandes soñadores y a el tampoco le gustaba su trabajo sino que lo hacia para mantenerse.

Estaba muy interesado por el arte. ·Monsieur Stanislas Boutardin: Tío de Michael,un hombre importange de negocios,banquero, director de la Societe des Catacombes de Paris.Vivía en una magnífica residencia de la calle imperial, una enorme construcción de un maravilloso mal hueso, rota por muchas ventanas, las oficinas ocupaban la Plata baja y los Anexos, etc. ·Richelot: Ex maestro de Michel, su nieta era lucy.
