We are delighted to celebrate our 7th Annivarsary in Houston. An unusual way to celebrate it though! We had a big party planned for March, that ended up as a broken plan just like it happened to most of us.

Today, after six months of almost total lockdown in Houston and the entire country, it is with great delight that we release this digital issue of LUXCIOR Magazine, as the prelude of great things to come, including our upcoming September printed issue.

We believe in a God that has absolute control over everything that happens in our world, and it is with that faith that we never stopped believing that good things are still ahead of us. We just needed to arm ourselves with patience, endurance and faith. And that's the reason we decided to produce a fabulous fashion photoshoot we named "Masks of Hope, Faith and Freedom" (page 46). Because no matter how bad things may look, we kept on believing, in our God above all else, and in our beloved Greater Houston community.

We also decided to publish about 100 pages with some of the beautiful, sometimes outrageous, in some cases controversial photography we have published over the past seven years. If you are not offended by guns, and understand that they are made for action movies and to keep us safe, then you may enjoy the last 100 pages of this magazine.

I'd like to thank our patrons, who have suffered along with us, and yet were understanding and patient enough to wait this long.

Estamos encantados de celebrar nuestro séptimo aniversario en Houston. ¡Y vaya forma inusual de celebrarlo! Teníamos una gran fiesta planeada para marzo, que terminó como un plan roto al igual que nos ha sucedido a la inmensa mayoría de nosotros.

Hoy, después de seis meses de encierro casi total en Houston y en todo el país, es un gran placer lanzar este número digital de LUXCIOR, como el preludio de grandes cosas por venir, incluido nuestro próximo número impreso en septiembre.

Creemos en un Dios que tiene control absoluto sobre todo lo que sucede en nuestro mundo, y es con esa fe que nunca dejamos de creer que todavía nos esperan cosas buenas. When we invest in our community, we invest in our own business, our economy, our future, and ultimately, ourselves and our families.

For nearly 20 years the Houston Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church has been dedicated to serving our community. For the past six years and thanks to the support of a dedicated group of certified volunteers, and our "Pathfinders Club" (children and teens up to 21 years of age) the Houston Maranatha Community Center -HMCC-, has assisted hundreds of families undergoing financial distress and through times of disaster (such as with hurricanes) as a distribution center for the Houston Food Bank.

During the months of crisis following Hurricane Harvey, the HMCC played a significant role in providing hands-on assistance to many families in desperate need.

In our quest for better ways to serve families in Houston’s inner city, we are building a new church and a much larger community center, located at 5550 Creekmont Drive, Houston, TX 77091, minutes from Northwest freeway at 610 loop.

Education, counseling, community and social resources, health fairs and food services, are just some of the components of our program to help the less fortunate in our community.

We have the vision, the know-how, the experience, the plan, the human resources, the land, the infrastructure and the city of Houston and Houston Food Bank's full support to put it all together.

We are asking for your help to complete Phase 1 of the project, which will make it fully operational withing the next 90 days. Phase 2 will take place at some point before the end of 2020. If funding allows, we are also looking to the opportunity to purchase an additional lot across the street.

Your tax deductible cash donation or in-kind gift, will make a noticeable difference in our Houston community, and the lives of many families and children.

Durante años las mexicanas residentes en los Estados Unidos le han estado pidiendo a Mexicana Universal en México, que se les permita competir en el reinado de su país. Razonables restricciones de Miss Universo lo impidieron durante años. Finalmente, gracias a la persistencia de Lupita Jones, su solicitud en favor de las jóvenes de este país fué aprobada.

Las dos condiciones es que las aspirantes 1- tengan la nacionalidad mexicana, lo cual es fácilmente alcanzable ya que existe la opción a doble nacionalidad entre ambos países; 2- que resida en México durante seis meses antes de la final mexicana.

El proceso selectivo se está llevado a cabo por todo el país, a través de Directores Estatales y Coordinadores Regionales autorizados.

Houston -la segunda ciudad con mayor número de mexicanas después de Los Angeles- es la Sede Nancional del prestifioso concurso que se llevará a cabo hacia fines del primer trimestre de 2021. Originalmente la fecha estaba fijada para septiembre de este año, pero por razones obvias debió postponerse.

Las ganadoras de todos los estados se darán cita en Houston para la Gran Final, donde una reina será coronada la mexicana más bella de Estados Unidos, y representará a nuestro país para ir a México a competir por una segunda corona nacional, ahora de aquel país. De ganar en México, logra un segundo título nacional, y queda automáticamente calificada para competir en Miss Universo como representante de México.

De esta forma, Estados Unidos pasa a competir en la República Mexicana como uno de los estados, incrementando el número de reinas estatales de 32, ahora a 33. Ningún otro concurso ofrece la oportunidad de lograr dos coronas nacionales y finalmente una corona universal.

SOBRE LA DISFUNCION SEXUAL Aún entrando a la tercera década del siglo XXI, el tema de la intimidad masculina sigue siendo -increíblemente- un asunto difícil de afrontar para la mayoría de los hombres latinos. A esta altura es un hecho sabido por todos que los problemas de erección nada tienen que ver con la masculinidad del hombre, sino más bien todo que ver mayormente con temas circulatorios y hormonales. Y estos problemas hoy en día son cada vez más notorios a temprana edad. De hecho, hoy en día la disminución en la producción de testosterona puede comenzar a partir de los 30 años. Y la buena nticia es que hay soluciones, no importa la edad.

Quizás lo que la mayoría de los médicos les dicen a sus pacientes cuando les hablan de su incapacidad para tener y mantener una erección es que no hay nada de qué avergonzarse, y que, de hecho, el plantearlo puede llevar a detectar el problema.

Se trata de un trastorno muy común y que la mayoría de hombres han experimentado al menos en algún momento de sus vidas.

Pero, ¿qué es lo que realmente hay detrás de la disminución en la potencia masculina? Analicemos algunas de las creencias más comunes para conocer si tienen respaldo científico, y al final veremos una manera probadamente efectiva de resolver este asunto.

"Es un problema de los ancianos" No, aunque es un problema muy común, particularmente en hombres mayores, los jóvenes también pueden sufrir de disfunción eréctil. Según el National Health System, NHS de Inglaterra, se estima que "la mitad de todos los hombres de entre 40 y 70 años lo sufrirán en algún grado".

Sin embargo Angela Gregory, una terapeuta psicosexual que atiende casos de disfunción eréctil referidos por el NHS, comenta de su experiencia con pacientes jóvenes: "Lo que he visto en los últimos 16 años, particularmente en los últimos cinco, es un aumento en la cantidad de hombres jóvenes que nos han derivado", indicó. "Nuestra experiencia es que, históricamente, los varones que eran referidos a nuestra clínica con problemas de disfunción eréctil eran hombres mayores cuyas dificultades estaban relacionadas con la diabetes o alguna enfermedad cardiovascular".

"Estos hombres jóvenes no tienen ninguna enfermedad orgánica, ya que han sido examinados por sus médicos de cabecera y todo está bien. Por eso, una de las primeras preguntas que siempre les hacemos es sobre sus hábitos de masturbación y uso de pornografía, porque eso puede ser la causa de sus problemas a la hora de mantener una erección con su pareja", afirmó.

Luisa, una joven que pidió no ser identificada, dijo que su novio de 28 años había experimentado disfunción eréctil. "La primera vez que intentamos tener sexo, él estaba muy nervioso y no funcionó. Mientras más intentaba, menos resultaba. Me sentí un poco frustrada, pero conversando con amigas me di cuenta de que es un problema más común de lo que creía", indicó.

"La impotencia es un problema mayormente psicológico" Es un mito que se ha mantenido con los años. Según la primera encuesta global sobre las percepciones de los hombres sobre la disfunción sexual, realizada en 1998 y cuyos hallazgos se presentaron en la cumbre de la Sociedad Internacional para la Investigación de la Impotencia en Ámsterdam, muchos hombres dijeron que la impotencia sexual "está en la mente".

Los resultados de la encuesta de más de 4.000 hombres de 10 países demostraron que, en promedio, 50% de quienes participaron en el estudio en cada país pensaban que la impotencia era causada por factores psicológicos.

Si bien es cierto que entre las posibles razones de la disfunción eréctil están el estrés, los problemas de pareja, la inseguridad, la ansiedad y la depresión, las causas fisiológicas juegan un papel clave.

Y es que, como explica el NHS, hay que estar atentos a las circunstancias en que se produce la disfunción: "Por ejemplo, podrías ser capaz de tener una erección cuando te masturbas o algunas veces podrías despertarte con una erección, pero no puedes conseguir una cuando estás con tu pareja", señala.

"Las arterias obstruidas (aterosclerosis) afectan no sólo los vasos sanguíneos del corazón, sino también los que están a lo largo del cuerpo. De hecho, en hasta 30% de los hombres que han visitado al doctor por disfunción eréctil, esa misma condición es la primera pista de que tienen una enfermedad cardiovascular".

También se puede deber a problemas hormonales, a una cirugía o a una lesión. "La disfunción eréctil es con frecuencia el resultado de enfermedades o condiciones que se vuelven más comunes con la edad", afirma la revista de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard.

Y, aunque factores relacionados con el envejecimiento (como que los tejidos pierdan elasticidad y la comunicación de los nervios se vuelva más lenta) también pueden afectar la habilidad para tener una erección, la Universidad de Harvard indica que "incluso esos factores no explican muchos de los casos de disfunción eréctil".

"Es suficiente con tomar los remedios que venden en la farmacia para la impotencia" Sí y no. Como explica el NHS, fármacos como el citrato de sildenafilo, también conocido como Viagra, entre otros, pueden ser usados en al menos 66% de los casos. Sin embargo, siempre es recomendable pedir que un médico analice su estado de salud antes de tomar cualquier medicina. Y es que en casos de problemas cardiacos y otros cuadros clínicos, medicinas contra la impotencia pueden tener efectos secundarios adversos.

"El ejercicio físico puede ayudar a reducir los problemas de impotencia" Sí. Hay hombres que, como señala la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard, han visto una mejoría "simplemente con perder peso y hacer más ejercicio".

Según un estudio de esa universidad, "sólo 30 minutos diarios de caminata estuvieron vinculados a una caída de 41% en el riesgo de disfunción eréctil.

Otra investigación sugiere que el ejercicio moderado puede ayudar a restaurar el desempeño sexual en hombres de edad media con obesidad que han experimentado disfunción eréctil".

Y al hablar de actividad física no solo se refiere a desempeñar actividades moderadas como caminar, nadar o trotar, por citar tres ejemplos, sino también a los ejercicios del suelo pélvico.

"Un suelo pélvico fuerte mejora la rigidez durante la erección y ayuda a mantener la sangre en el pene al presionar una vena clave", indica la universidad estadounidense.

Se ha comprobado que al trabajar el suelo pélvico también se logra tener un mayor control de la vejiga y se podía disfrutar más de las relaciones sexuales.

Sin importar el género. El suelo pélvico se suele trabajar con una serie de ejercicios que fueron bautizados en honor al doctor Arnold Kegel. El ginecólogo estadounidense desarrolló estos ejercicios para sus pacientes como método para control de la incontinencia urinaria de las mujeres después del parto.El Kegel consiste en contraer y relajar repetidamente los músculos pélvicos activando toda la zona del ano, la zona de los testículos y la zona de los glúteos.

SOLO PARA HOMBRES ¿Cuáles son los trastornos hormonales más comunes en los hombres?

La disfunción eréctil puede ocurrir a cualquier edad, pero es más común en hombres mayores de 65 años, debido a la disminución en la producción de testosterona.

Más de treinta hormonas controlan muchas de las funciones de nuestro cuerpo, desde el metabolismo hasta nuestra respuesta al estrés.

Existen una variedad de posibles soluciones rápidas y temporales para tratar el DE. Algunas de las más populares son drogas como Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Adcirca, Cialis), Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn) y Avanafil (Stendra).

Sin embargo, ninguna de estas opciones resuelve el problema de la deficiencia de testosterona.

Las hormonas son nuestros mensajeros químicos; son generadas por distintas glándulas repartidas por el cuerpo y viajan hasta sus órganos-objetivo a través de la sangre.

Entre los trastornos hormonales más comunes entre los hombres se destaca la falta de testosterona.

Disminución en la producción de testosterona Todos los hombres necesitan tener testosterona para poder tener una vida saludable física y psicológicamente. Pero el nivel de esta hormona disminuye naturalmente con la edad, se estima que un 2% al año a partir de los 30-40 años.

Por eso su deficiencia es muy difícil de diagnosticar: para los médicos puede ser difícil discernir entre la falta patológica de testosterona y una disminución natural debida a la edad.

Los síntomas más habituales son: fatiga y letargo, depresión, ansiedad, irritabilidad, menor deseo sexual, disfunción eréctil o impotencia, menor tolerancia al ejercicio y menor fortaleza, reducción en la frecuencia del afeitado, mayor sudoración y transpiración nocturna y disminución de la capacidad de concentración y la memoria.

El hipogonadismo se puede diagnosticar con varios análisis de sangre, que miden los distintos niveles de testosterona en diferentes momentos del día o a lo largo de un cierto período de tiempo.

La testosterona y el DE La disfunción eréctil (DE) es la incapacidad constante de lograr o mantener una erección o rigidez del pene durante suficiente tiempo para poder tener relaciones sexuales satisfactorias. Para mantener la erección, la sangre tiene que poder circular en el pene y permanecer en este hasta el orgasmo.

Las causas más comunes de DE son los problemas médicos que afectan los vasos sanguíneos y la circulación de la sangre al pene. Estos incluyen el endurecimiento de las arterias (ateroesclerosis) asociado con la diabetes, obesidad, el uso de tabaco, la presión arterial alta y el colesterol elevado. Por eso, la DE puede ser indicio de enfermedades cardíacas u otros problemas de salud. Otras causas pueden provenir de algunos medicamentos (antidepresivos y medicamentos para el tratamiento de la presión arterial alta, dolor o cáncer de la próstata), el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, tabaco y drogas ilegales.

Por otro lado la pérdida del deseo sexual puede ser resultado de la depresión, ansiedad, enfermedades cerebrales (como un derrame cerebral) o la deficiencia de testosterona.

¿Qué es la terapia de reemplazo de hormonas bioidénticas?

los pantalones? por Martin Gondra Si le preguntas a un amigo quién lleva los pantalones en su relación, seguramente su respuesta será rápida y contundente: su mujer. Si la pregunta en cambio, se la haces a ella, la contestación va a ser bastante más larga y tediosa, intentando justificarse y convencerte que ella cree en la comunicación, en la confianza y en el compromiso mutuo. Te va a decir que en su casa no manda nadie. Su respuesta se debe a la distinta concepción que tienen los hombres y las mujeres de las relaciones de pareja. Pero para nuestra tranquilidad, ninguna de estas respuestas se ajusta a lo que vivimos realmente.

Cuando él es el que manda Podríamos comenzar a hablar de intrincadas teorías de conspiración, contando que esta forma de vida está grabada en nuestro planeta desde hace miles de años, con una sociedad patriarcal donde el sexo masculino es dueño del poder económico y político. Y si esto es así en todos los aspectos, ¿quién va a pensar que dentro de su casa, él va a renunciar al mando? Es una señal para el resto de los hombres que están escuchando la conversación, de que ellos saben perfectamente cómo interpretar esas palabras.

La estrategia masculina es hacerle creer a su mujer que ella manda, y para ello usan argumentos como que ella es la que elige qué película ver en el cine, dónde ir a cenar y qué nombre ponerle a los niños.

Otros argumentos giran en torno a la visita semanal a la tienda, la decoración de la casa, o la elección de dónde pasar las fiestas navideñas.

Cuando ella es la que manda en la pareja Ellos viven contentos en el mundo ficticio donde la mujer es la que lleva los pantalones, de esta forma pueden hacer lo que gusten, porque quién lleva los pantalones está verbalmente reconocido.

Sin embargo, adentro del hogar, la percepción de ella es diferente. La relación de pareja es una pelea continua buscando el poder, un poder que no era tenido en cuenta cuando deseaba un matrimonio feliz.

La verdad es que muchas mujeres son controladoras, obsesivas y mandonas, que constantemente necesitan que las cosas se hagan a su manera. Este tipo de mujer, casi siempre, termina casándose con hombres con el síndrome de Peter Pan, que buscan una madre comprensiva en lugar de una mujer.

Pero, lo cierto es que la mayoría no tiene en cuenta quién manda dentro de la pareja. Ellas esperan una relación igualitaria, con un compañero amoroso y que se deje amar, respetuoso, que las apoye y que trate de comprenderlas, de la misma forma que ellas lo intentan con ellos.

Casi ninguna mujer quiere ser la que lleva los pantalones -al fin y al cabo, desean sentir que están al lado de un hombre, no un muchachito sin carácterpero tampoco quieren que ellos lo hagan. Creen en la negociación y en los acuerdos que benefician a ambos. Y creen que cualquier mujer debería poder ponerse los pantalones cuando se le dé la gana, porque al final de cuentas, el matrimonio es una relación en la que una persona tiene la razón, y la otra es el marido.

Taycan A TECHNOLOGY MILESTONE

Porsche made a name for itself by building high-horsepower, high-octane cars for the road and for the track, not by catering to motorists who want to reduce their carbon footprint. However, being a top performance-oriented brand, Porsche could only sit back and watch Tesla parade around at ludicrous speed for so long. Time for them to enter the full-EV business in a big way, a way that only Porsche can: Taycan Turbo S. The Billlion Home WELCOME TO "ANTILIA"

The most expensive house on the planet The $2-billion dollar, 27-story, 400,000 sq/ft home, property of the world's 20th billionaire, petroleum titan and wealthiest man in Asia, Mukesh Ambani, sits in the heart of Mumbai, India. In reality, this magnificent piece of real estate falls second after the Buckingham Palace, estimated at over $5 billion dollars. However, Buckingham is a Crown property, while Antilia is a privately owned home.

Mukesh is responsible for a fifth of India's exports, which is outrageous considering India represents about 20% of the world's population.

The 27 floors are about double the height of standard floors, so the building is actually as tall as a 50 to 60-story building.

A 6-story elevator-garage exclusively devoted to storing up to 168 cars and their service station. Above the six-floor garage stands the sumptuous lobby holding 9 elevators. On the top of the building you will find three helipads.

The first two floors are comprised of a recreation center, with a 50-seater movie theatre, a gym and health spa, a hair salon, an icecream room and a yoga studio. Further up is the ballroom, with multiple crystal chandeliers that cover 80% of the ceiling.

The fabulous structure was built by architects Perkins and Will from Chicago, and the interior design was developed by Leighton Holdings from Australia.

The sumptuous residence includes its own temple, and an ice room, equipped with a snow generator; several balconies with luscious gardens and the vegetation attached to large portions of the outer walls are meant to absorb the sunlight and keep the interior as cool as possible.

Although just six family members live in the residence, it's kept by a staff of 600 specialized professionals, including butlers, cooks, cleaners, maintenance, and security personnel, to name a few.

Ambani was one of four children of Dhirubhai Ambani, who first worked as a gas-station attendant. Owing to the increasingly unstable political climate in Aden, the family relocated in 1958 to the Bhuleshwar neighbourhood of Bombay (now Mumbai), where they lived in a chawl (a communal building that commonly features low-rent two-room apartments). In the same year, Dhirubhai and a cousin founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation, which grew from a commodities-trading business that they initially operated out of a one-room rental space into RIL. Ambani earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Bombay (now the University of Mumbai) and subsequently pursued a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University. However, he left the program in 1981 to join the family business, where he worked to diversify the company, venturing into a vast array of areas, including communications, infrastructure, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, polyester fibres, and gas and oil production. In 2004 he was named one of the world’s most respected business leaders by the professional-services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Ambani has been credited with creating the globe’s largest start-up petroleum refinery as well as spearheading the creation of several stateof-the-art manufacturing facilities that vastly increased RIL’s production capabilities. In 2006 he was chosen to cochair the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF)—an international organization made up of some of the world’s prominent business leaders, politicians, policy makers, scholars, philanthropists, trade unionists, and representa-

tives of non-governmental organizations that convenes annually to discuss global commerce, economic development, political concerns, and important social issues. The following year he became India’s first rupee trillionaire.

In 2007 The Economic Times newspaper and the news agency Press Trust of India simultaneously named Ambani the world’s richest man. The following year he created the Mumbai Indians, an Indian Premier League cricket team. In 2010 he was elected to serve as a member of the WEF Foundation Board.

Legal Immigration at Stake

By Charles C. Foster President Trump's late at night on April 20 tweeted: “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States !” He followed up by signing an Executive Order on April 22, 2020 banning all employment based immigration and a good part of family immigration, but for spouses and minor children of US citizens.

While the Executive order provided it was to be in place only 60 days, it was not too early to state that this tweet and the resulting Executive Order is more of a political statement than a health or economic policy one, although with significant policy implications.

Already with the closure of American consular posts abroad and the cancellation of all in-person interviews at offices of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) as a practical matter no immigrant or non-immigrant cases were being approved based upon petitions by U.S. employers or close family members. However it is expected that Consular Posts will be gradually reopening soon as will be in-person interviews.

Furthermore, the rationale for the Executive Order that would-be immigrants being a source of the coronavirus makes little sense. Prior to the issuance of any immigrant visa abroad, the applicant is required to be tested for any contagious disease by a doctor selected by the appropriate American consulate abroad. Applicants for adjustment of status in the US must also provide evidence from a doctor selected by CIS that they are not subject to any conta-

gious disease. Family immigration was being reduced anyway with the Trump administration’s strict application of the “public charge” provision making it far more difficult for low to even mid-level income US petitioners to sponsor their close relatives, all made worst by the current economic collapse.

The indication that this ban on legal immigration is only “temporarily” for no more than 60 days gave one little confidence given the fact President Trump said the original so-called Muslim Ban -later recharacterize as a Travel Ban - would be for 90 days and now it's been in effect for over 2 years. Furthermore, in the President’s subsequent Proclamation of June 22 banning temporary work visa issuance like H-1B professional specialty occupation workers and L-1 intra-company transferees, the Executive Order banning the issuance of immigrant visas has now been extended to the end of the year.

While the Executive Order is being challenged by law suits filed on July 17 in US District courts, which will likely find that the President exceeded his executive authority, the US Supreme Court's decision in Trump v. Hawaii upholding the validity of the Travel Ban gives one little comfort that such litigation will be successful. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for his 5-4 majority, held that under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the President had the authority to “suspend the entry of all aliens ” into the United States whenever he “finds” that their entry “would be detrimental to the interests of the United States”.

While the Executive Order bars entry for most applicants seeking immigrant visas to obtain Lawful Permanent Residency – so-called “green card” status, fortunately it does not apply to applicants already in lawful status in the U.S.

The Executive Order also exempts individuals in food production and directly helping to protect the supply chain and also does not apply to healthcare or medical research professionals, thus avoiding likely criticism . Of great concern, the Executive Order language tracks legislation originally proposed

by Senators Tom Cotton (R-Ark) and David Perdue (R-Ga) in their RAISE Act, which would have significantly cut legal family based immigration, thus achieving through executive action what the Trump administration could not achieve legislatively. In 2018’s Senate negotiations to provide a legislative solution for DACA beneficiaries, a deal was at hand after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reluctantly agreed to a huge increase in wall funding, but when the White House under immigration restrictionist and Presidential advisor Stephen Miller added additional demands for similar legal family based immigration cuts of over 50%, it was a “bridge to far” for the Democrats to swallow.

The President justifies his Executive Order on the fact that he “ cannot jump start the domestic economy if Americans are forced to compete against an artificially enlarged labor pool caused by the introduction of foreign workers” which seems to be an overreach given the fact the numbers of immigrant and nonimmigrant work visas sponsored by US employers represent a relatively small percentage of the US workforce and tend to be mostly in highly specialized employment areas or where historically there are proven shortage of US workers such as in high tech areas. Futhermore the the president says our economy will soon be back to the “greatest economy in the history of the world” where until recently we were at record low unemployment rates, essentially full employment .

While many of the President's tweets are often ignored even by his own administration, unfortunately given the President's propensity to fall back on immigration when he's in a political bind, this was inevitable once the President’s poll numbers failed to rise after stories on his mishandling of the coronavirus, denying the President a historic bounce in the polls that virtually every other president had received during a national crisis. Since he will not be able to run for reelection on a great economy, the President’s go-to card has been to blame problems on immigrants and immigration. Better to shift the conversation and debate to immigration rather than the economy or the handling of the coronavirus. That's how he won in 2016 on building the wall and making Mexico pay for it. However, whatever you think about the President, his political instincts at this time may not be wrong with recent polling showing support for a “pause ” on immigration.

It will be a true tragedy if immigration retrictionist are able to achieve their long-stated goal of an unprecedented shutdown of our legal immigration system while America is distracted by the coronavirus crises. If there is anything that will save us, it will be that most Americans recognize that we are - to quote the title of President John F. Kennedy's seminal work - “A Nation of Immigrants”, which has overwhelmingly benefitted and grown by immigration. About a quarter of all Houstonians are foreign born. Millions of immigrants are already in the US working day-in and day-out to defeat the coronavirus , mitigating the economic effects from cleaning away germs to developing cures and delivering needed medical supplies. Even very conservative Republican Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said on C-Span he doesn't know if President Trump's pause of legal immigration makes any sense because “ we've been a welcoming nation and we need people”.

Let's hope common sense will prevail.

he Louvre Abu Dhabi is the result of an unprecedented initiative that laid the groundwork for a new type of cultural collaboration of unparalleled scope between two countries, centered on the creation of a national institution.

Born out of an intergovernmental agreement signed on March 6, 2007, between the United Arab Emirates and France, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first universal museum in the Arab world. The museum brings the Louvre name to Abu Dhabi and presents both ancient and contemporary works of historic, cultural, and sociological interest from around the world.

ARTE & CULTURA

The museum is not, in any way, a copy of the French Louvre; it is an individual institution offering its own interpretation of a universal museum, reflecting its era and the local traditions of the country it lies in. Its collection, which includes loans from French institutions (rotated on a ten-year basis), as well as works from its own currently-developing compilation, is presented in an original manner.

Its uniqueness is based on an overarching vision of artistic creation. Museums traditionally organize their collections by school, technique, and materials, and while this approach does highlight the unique characteristics of a series, it does nothing to show the influences, exchanges, and circulation of ideas and know-how.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s unique exhibition design explores the connections between civilizations and cultures that may, at first,

ARTE & CULTURA appear to be far separated by time and geography. Visitors are guided through a chronological and theme-based display, traversing different periods and civilizations. The display picks out universal themes and common influences to illustrate the similarities that grow out of a shared human experience, beyond any geographical, historical, or cultural boundaries. The result is a truly universal museum.

An Ambitious Project Built on Saadiyat Island (the island of happiness), a natural 27-km² island a third of the size of Paris, the Cultural District houses a number of renowned cultural establishments: the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by architect Jean Nouvel; the Zayed National Museum by Norman Foster; and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi by Frank Gehry.

The Cultural District is part of a new urban complex just outside the historic Abu Dhabi city center, with housing for 150,000 residents. All of these projects are intended to encourage new artistic expression, inherent to a rapidly growing region. The Louvre Abu Dhabi aims to complement the other Emirati museums and help transform the art and cultural scene in the Middle East.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi: a masterful architectural design Jean Nouvel, a Pritzker Architecture Prize winner selected to design the museum, was inspired by the special features of the Saadiyat site: a virgin lagoon island, between sand and sea, shade and light. His design offers visitors a high-impact architectural and museum experience that fosters dialogue between cultures. Jean Nouvel wanted his building to have “a form that matches its function as a sanctuary for the most valuable works of art.”

The Louvre Abu Dhabi “museum city” covers nearly 64,000 m², with 6,000 m² devoted to the permanent collection and 2,000 m² for temporary exhibitions. A dome of 180 meters in diameter (the same size as the Louvre’s Cour Carrée) covers two thirds of the museum, providing shade and reducing energy consumption.

Echoing the mosque, mausoleum, caravanserai, and madrasa, its shape is not bound by any literal inspiration: resting on four points of contact and slightly low-slung, it is the embodiment of a completely contemporary style.

Pierced with openings to look like interwoven palm leaves, a traditional roofing material in the Emirates, the dome resembles silver lace. A geometric template of stars repeated in different sizes and at different angles in a complex arrangement forms eight distinct layers, four external and four internal. Sun filters through the dome like a deli-

cate, protective rain of light, similar to a claustra lattice of mashrabiyas, reflecting the constant interplay of light and shadow in the country.

Below, Jean Nouvel has designed a complex of buildings with harmonious proportions, embraced by the sea. Freely inspired by buried cities and the prototypical Oriental city, a large part of the museum complex is sheltered under the comfort of this shadow. This urban and geometric “medina” of rooms appears like a city neighborhood, with some thirty buildings visible along a promenade. Rising up to heights of 4–12 m, they each feature a different façade decorated with a variety of piercings, combining unique transitions and passages. The museum city creates a space that plays with the multiple connections between indoor and outdoor, ever-changing and poetic, to kindle curiosity and invite visitors to explore new routes and pathways, guided by the light.

Inspired by the ancient falaj system of Arab engineering, a water channel runs through the museum, making the space into a refreshing oasis that encourages strolling along the waterside.

So-called “passive” design strategies take advantage of the natural shape of the buildings and the properties of the materials selected to improve outdoor conditions. The museum’s roof is perforated to capture daylight without letting in too much sun; light-reflecting materials in pale colors are used to repel rather than absorb heat; reduced-flow plumbing and water facilities were selected to reduce the building’s demand for drinkable water.

An all-encompassing collection The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection began with a blank slate and is growing gradually; it comprises ancient and contemporary works from different countries.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s ambition is to acquire high-quality works and build up a first-class collection worthy of international recognition. An Acquisitions Committee following the model of the Musée du Louvre’s own committee has been formed. The teams within TCA Abu Dhabi and Agence France-Muséums study proposals and follow acquisition practices. Works are chosen according to the strictest ethical considerations, and their origins are closely scrutinized. The Committee must endorse each acquisition.

These exceptional works include a gold bracelet with lion figures made in Iran nearly 3,000 years ago, an Italian gold and garnet fibula (brooch) from the 5th century BC, a superb Virgin and Child by Bellini, paintings by Jordaens, Caillebotte, Manet, Gauguin, and Magritte, a paper collage

by Picasso never seen in the public domain, and nine canvasses by the recently deceased American painter Cy Twombly.

The collection not only includes pieces from the Middle East and the West but also works such as a Soninke/Djennenke figure from Mali, a dancing Shiva from India, and an octagonal box from China, all bringing influence from other geographical regions.

The collection is multidisciplinary and spans every medium: in addition to painting, sculpture, tapestry, goldwork, paper collage, etc., the Louvre Abu Dhabi also features a photography collection and works from the decorative arts, such as a decanter by Christopher Dresser (Glasgow, 1834–Mulhouse, 1904).

A museum at the crossroads of civilizations The Louvre Abu Dhabi sets out to be the focal point of a dialogue between civilizations and cultures, symbolically continuing the age-old history of the Arabian Peninsula as a land of convergence and exchange. It is essential for it to convey this spirit of openness and intercultural dialogue.

Abu Dhabi’s ambition is to create a platform for education and culture.

The museum is located just a few hours from India, in the heart of the Middle East, in a capital of the modern world; it is truly at the crossroads of civilizations. Its own permanent collection is being developed for residents as well as regional and international visitors to admire: a national art collection with something for everyone.

It is the “must-do” to be domestically and globally competitive. Given today’s demographic shift in America, brands can no longer afford to make guesses and assumptions about their target audiences.

“On a recent episode of MSNBC’s “Your Business”, producer Frank Silverstein noted that “First, you must understand how culture defines the identity of the Hispanic person. If you don’t understand their cultural characteristics, then you will not understand how Hispanics are wired to think and why they purchase and remain loyal to certain brands.

“Latinos are a highly diverse community (Houston is the second largest -after Los Angeles- and the most diverse Hispanic city in the nation, over New York and Los angeles – cursive is ours) and their growing population resides in markets that brands may not be paying attention to, according to new research by Nielsen.
