Preventing Sewer Line Back-ups - It starts at Home

Sewer line back ups can cause a major inconvenience in the home, and can be timeconsuming and costly to find and remedy. Here are some things we can do right in our own homes to help prevent back-ups.

• Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain. Instead, scrape out or pour cooking oil and grease into a container or plastic bag and dispose of it in your kitchen garbage.

• Do not dispose of large absorbent items like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes or feminine products, down the toilet, these are not items that disintegrate like toilet paper will, including “flushable” wipes. These products should be disposed of in your garbage.

• Kitchen garburators increase the amount of organic material in the service lines. Depending on the condition of the service line, organic material can stick to the lines and over time cause blockages. Compost your organic material instead.

To help prevent a sewer backup, be mindful of what goes down the drain. Your pipes are not built to handle most food items and will almost always cause a blockage in the short or long term. When in doubt, properly dispose of these items by throwing them away.

• Here are some of the key points of the bylaw:

• Do not park in a way that blocks a lane, driveway, or access to private property.

• Do not park on any street for more than 72 hours.

• Do not park on the left side of the street (facing the wrong way).

• Trailers cannot be parked on a street unless attached to a towing vehicle. Construction trailers are the exception but can only stay unhitched for up to 12 hours during the day while work is being done nearby. They must be hitched overnight.

Martensville Election Day is November 13

The Martensville Municipal election will take place on Wednesday, November 13th from 8:00am-8:00pm at the North Ridge Community Centre.

Advanced polls have already taken place, with residents able to cast their votes November 2nd, 6th and 9th at City Hall.

The municipal election occurs every four years where Martensville residents are able to vote for mayor and 6 councillors.

You are able to vote in the local election if you are a Canadian citizen over the age of 18 and have resided in Martensville for a minimum of three consecutive months and a resident of Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months.

All voters are required to provide identification to be eligible to vote for proof of identity and establish their residency. Government-issued photo identification is the best option, such as a driver’s license, but if that isn’t available, you may also provide two original pieces of information which contain your name and address, such as a utility bill issued to you within the past six months, and a credit card statement.

If you do not possess any form of acceptable identification, you are able to have another voter (with accepted proof of identity) fil out the required form available at the polling station to vouch for you.

This year, there are two candidates running for mayor, which include incumbent Kent Muench and Travis Sorenson.

There are 14 candidates running for a position on Martensville City Council, which include incumbents Darren MacDonald and Spencer Nikkel, as well as Tracy Cocks, Brad Blixt, Krista McCann, Mark Knox, Douglas O’Hara, Matthew Stavenow, Katharine Carter, Bren Hannay, Logan McCorriston, Stephen Ioannou, Derek Reddekopp and Shawn Sampson.

Saskatchewan RCMP Issue Warning to Motorists Following Five Motor-Vehicle Collisions Involving Moose Within Thirty Minutes

Saskatchewan RCMP issued a warning motorists following five motorvehicle collisions involving moose being reported to Saskatchewan RCMP's Divisional Operational Communications Centre (DOCC) near the Hudson Bay, Rose Valley, Prince Albert, Melfort/Kinistino and Southey areas on November 8th between 6:20 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

The vehicles involved in each collision were damaged but none of the occupants were injured.

Saskatchewan RCMP reminds motorists to exercise caution when driving on the highway, especially near treed areas. Wildlife are more active at night and during the early morning hours when visibility is poor but may also present themselves during the middle of the day.

They should also watch for movement on or alongside the road and shining eyes, which will be your head lights reflecting off the animal’s eyes. Moose are tall animals and their eyes are normally above the beams of most vehicle headlights, and so are less likely to reflect the light.

Motorists should remain alert and travel at reduced speeds in areas known to be frequented by wildlife.

Saskatoon Police Warn of Cryptocurrency Investment Scam

The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Unit and Cybercrime Detail is advising the public about the rise and increasingly devastating effects of a cryptocurrency related scam commonly known as “pig butchering”.

This cryptocurrency scam typically begins with an unsolicited text, email, or contact via social media in the form of a message that is intended for someone other than the victim. Slowly over time, after gaining the trust of the victim, the suspects often introduce a website or phone application that appears to be a legitimate investment platform. To ease any apprehension from the victim about the nature of the investments, suspects will get victims to invest a small amount of funds to the fraudulent platform and return a larger amount to their personal account shortly after. This small return, in addition to the appearance of a legitimate website and/or web application, convinces the victim to invest large sums of funds to the fraudulent platform.

Victims will have access to this seemingly legitimate web platform showing what appears to be large returns on their initial investment. This often encourages victims of these scams to continue to put more funds into the fraudulent platform; however, the returns on investment the web platform displays to the victims are not real. Once the victim is ready to make a withdrawal, the suspects will often solicit more funds by introducing fees, taxes, etc. Once the suspect determines there are no more funds to solicit, they cease contact completely, leaving the victim with a large loss of what can be tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Saskatoon Police Service is encouraging members of the public to report if they have been a victim of this scam and if you have any information regarding the scam contact police at 306-975-8300 or submit a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Martensville Canadian Tire Celebrates Grand Re-Opening Following Renovation

Martensville’s Canadian Tire has taken on a whole new look over the past year, and to celebrate the renovation, a grand-reopening celebration including a ribbon cutting, special sales, a BBQ fundraiser, giveaways and more took place over the past week.

When Canadian Tire was first constructed in Martensville in 2015, it was built as a 30,000 square-foot space; however, the recent expansion saw it increase in size to 50,000 square-feet. There was also numerous upgrades and modifications to the space to increase convenience for shoppers, including LED lighting throughout the store, electronic shelf labels to help make shopping and price accuracy more efficient and a new façade to the front of the building.

The expanded space was open to the public in August; however, there was still work to be done before owner/dealer Lindsay Ullathorne was ready to officially celebrate the new space.

Along with the additional space comes additional products and shoppers will now be able to find more items locally than they previously could, including an expanded sporting goods area, kitchen and home items, pet supplies, a year-round toy section, and tool/automotive supplies. The new space also allows for more ability to showcase products with displays, especially during the holidays.

The expansion also saw a need for more employees on staff to accommodate shoppers, keeping shelves stocked, unloading trucks and more. Currently, there are more than 100 employees on staff at the Martensville Canadian Tire location.

One of the newest additions was a permanent indoor plant store within the front vestibule, where they could utilize the natural light flowing in from the windows. There are fresh tropical deliveries coming in each week from Central Botanical Growers.

“Thank you to our incredible team of staff and managers for making the grand opening such a success. It has been a year of long hours and hard work, but the smiles and positivity from our team never wavered. We are very proud of what we have accomplished and of the shopping experience we have created for our community. We hope you are as excited about our new store as we are,” Ullathorne shared in a social media post.

Premier Names New, Smaller Cabinet with a New Minister in Every Position

Premier Scott Moe appointed a new, smaller cabinet, with a new minister in every cabinet position on November 7th. "This is a new beginning - a new government with a new mandate from Saskatchewan voters, and today we have a new cabinet," Moe said. "I know every minister is looking forward to taking on their new responsibilities, addressing the opportunities and challenges that face Saskatchewan.

"In the recent election, many people voted to re-elect our government to ensure a strong economy and a bright future, while many others voted for change. Our new government will deliver both.

"We will ensure Saskatchewan's economy remains strong and growing, while addressing the challenges of a growing province like timely access to health care and improved learning opportunities for children in our schools."

The government's longest-serving minister Jim Reiter becomes the new Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance. Reiter has been a minister since 2009. He will also serve as Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety and Minister of Immigration and Career Training.

Four ministers are entering cabinet for the first time:

• Alana Ross as Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Tourism Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority;

• Daryl Harrison as Minister of Agriculture;

• Travis Keisig as Minister of Environment; and

• Eric Schmalz as Minister of Government Relations, Minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs.

Two former ministers will re-enter cabinet:

• Ken Cheveldayoff as Minister of Advanced Education; and

• Warren Kaeding as Minister of Trade and Export Development. Current ministers taking on new responsibilities are:

• Everett Hindley becomes Minister of Education;

• Jeremy Cockrill becomes Minister of Health;

• Lori Carr becomes Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health;

• Tim McLeod becomes Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety;

• David Marit becomes Minister of Highways, Minister of SaskBuilds and Procurement;

• Jeremy Harrison becomes Minister of Crown Investments Corporation and all of its commercial Crown Corporations, and Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission;

• Terry Jenson becomes Minister of Social Services; and

• Colleen Young becomes Minister of Energy and Resources.

The new 16-member cabinet is two ministers smaller than the previous cabinet.

Premier Moe also named the new House leadership positions for the government caucus. They are:

• Government House Leader, Tim McLeod;

• Deputy House Leader, Lori Carr;

• Government Whip, Todd Goudy; and

• Deputy Whip, Sean Wilson.

Jamie Martens becomes the new Provincial Secretary.

Premier Moe said the government is planning to hold a fall sitting of the Legislature and a date for the Throne Speech will be announced soon.

SPORTS

Former Royal Helps Regina Rams Win Hardy Cup

Many sports teams in Martensville often see skilled players move on to the next level in their career, as they get drafted to another level of the sport, or play for a new team at a post-secondary school, etc.

Former Martensville High School (MHS) Royals football player Toryn Swystun-Bernes was one of 16 seniors, as well as a Captain, on the Royals when they won the Provincial Championship after an undefeated season in 2021. Prior to this, Swystun-Bernes played tackle football with the Martensville Maddogs in Peewee and Bantam, played with the SMF North Academy before being chosen for the U16 Team Sask in 2019, and also played with the North Sask Varsity team.

Following his graduation, Swystun-Bernes was offered a scholarship through the University of Regina Rams, where he has been playing for the past three years. This year, Swystun-Bernes is playing his second year as the starting nose tackle on the defensive line.

On November 9th, the Regina Rams defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 19-14 to win the Hardy Cup. This exciting matchup marked the first all Saskatchewan U-Sports western conference since 2002.

Throughout his life, Swystun-Bernes has faced numerous challenges, such as fine motor skills delays, speech and language delays, and Dyslexia, but none of those have ever stopped him from striving for success, and if anything, just pushes him to work harder.

Congratulations to Swystun-Bernes on your successful season with the Regina Rams!
