Saskatchewan RCMP Investigating After Police Vehicle Rammed

On May 30, 2024, a Saskatchewan RCMP Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) officer was conducting patrols. The officer observed a speeding vehicle on Highway #40 near Neilburg, SK and conducted a traffic stop.

The vehicle did not stop and instead, stopped in the middle of the highway and reversed, striking the police vehicle. The vehicle then drove forward, turned around, and struck the police vehicle head on twice. The police vehicle was heavily damaged.

A passing civilian motorist rammed and disabled the suspect vehicle, preventing it from continuing to strike the police vehicle. The occupants of the suspect vehicle, a male and a female, then fled on foot into a wooded area.

The officer driving the police vehicle was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature.

Multiple Saskatchewan RCMP resources came to the scene to help locate the suspects, including the Cut Knife, Maidstone and Unity detachments and Saskatchewan and Lloydminster RCMP Police Dog Services. The Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was also used.

An adult female was arrested in the wooded area. Officers extensively searched for the male suspect, who was not located.

CTSS continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist and the North Battleford General Investigation Section.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the identify or location of the male suspect to report it immediately.

The male is described as appearing in his mid 30s to 40s, approximately 6' tall, 180 to 190 lbs, with black hair. He was wearing a black or blue t-shirt, a dark-coloured ball cap, blue jeans, white running shoes and a grey or black medical mask or bandanna.

If you have any information about this incident, report it immediately to Saskatchewan RCMP at 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www. saskcrimestoppers.com. Updates will be provided as they become available.

MCRP Committee Gets First Look at New Martensville Rec Centre

The Martensville Recreation Centre (MRC) is making progress towards opening the facility later this year.

This 680-acre residential and commercial development located just west of Highway 12 and bordering the City’s current west boundary began construction in November of 2022 and is scheduled to be open in the fall of this year.

“Our crews are gearing up to pour the main arena slab, putting the finishing touches on the ceilings, and the climbing wall is nearly complete. Additionally, we're on the verge of finishing the drywall scope, and signage installation is well underway,” stated Wright Construction Western Inc., via social media.

A tour of the facility was given to members of the Martensville Community Recreation Project (MCRP) Committee lead by Roxane Melnyk, Director of Recreation and Community Services, on Friday, May 31st.

Some of the unique features of this facility include a leisure/practice ice surface, indoor playground and mini-stick area, concession and vendor space to go along with the main field house and 900 seat arena.

If you are considering being a part of this project, you can participate in one of the many Martensville Community Recreation Project events, or through a charitable donation. Donations for this project are being accepted at www.mcrp.ca/donate/. There are also still various options for sponsorship by contacting the City of Martensville. 316 Provincial Suspensions, 170 Criminal Code Charges in April Impaired Focus

Submitted by SGI

New drivers continue to be over-represented in suspensions for alcohol/drug driving offences

The results from the April Traffic Safety Spotlight show 316 drivers were suspended for exceeding the provincial limits for alcohol or drugs, and another 170 were charged under the Criminal Code for an impaired driving offence.

The April Spotlight highlighted the fact that new drivers typically receive a disproportionate amount of provincial administrative driving suspensions related to alcohol and drugs. The latest results show a continuation of that pattern. New drivers make up about nine per cent of all drivers in Saskatchewan, but accounted for more than one-third of the total number of suspensions issued by law enforcement in April. Suspensions: 316 - New drivers: 113 (49 alcohol, 64 drugs) - Experienced drivers: 203 (77 alcohol, 126 drugs)

New drivers (i.e., Learners, Novices and anyone under 22) aren’t allowed any alcohol or drugs in their system when they drive. Police have approved screening devices that can determine the presence of alcohol and drugs in your system. Under provincial legislation, a new driver will be suspended for exceeding .00 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) on a roadside breath test or failing an oral fluid swab for cannabis and other drugs. The roadside swabs fail drivers who exceed 25 ng/ml of THC in their oral fluid. (The same limits for THC apply to new and experienced drivers.)

If you’re a new driver, exceeding the provincial limits will set you up for the stone-cold reality of losing your driver’s licence for at least 60 days, and having your vehicle impounded for 72 hours. (Experienced drivers receive a three-day suspension for a first offence for a BAC between .04-.08 or failing a roadside oral fluid swab.)

The bottom line: always drive sober. If you’re using alcohol or drugs, make sure that you find a safe ride, with a sober driver behind the wheel.

Other results from the April Traffic Safety Spotlight:

• 4,203 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving offences;

• 381 tickets for people not wearing a seatbelt, or not using the proper car seat or booster; and

• 573 tickets for distracted driving, including 465 for using a cellphone.
