Wildfires Ravage Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is experiencing one of its most destructive and widespread wildfire seasons in recent memory, with multiple large fires forcing mass evacuations and creating dangerous air quality conditions across the province.

As of early June 2025, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has reported over 105 active wildfires, a sharp increase from normal seasonal activity. Thousands of residents from across the province have been evacuated due to the risk of fires, with areas within the Village of Denare Beach, East Trout Lake and James Smith Cree Nation seeing structures lost.

The smoke has not only blanketed central Saskatchewan but has spread into neighboring provinces and even parts of the U.S. Midwest, raising cross-border air quality concerns.

Crews from across the province have mobilized to assist, including members from Martensville, Warman, Humboldt, and Dalmeny fire departments that have sent personnel and equipment north to aid in suppression and values protection. Local departments have reassured their communities that emergency coverage at home remains fully staffed and operational.

As wildfires continue to threaten Saskatchewan’s communities and natural landscapes, first responders, volunteers, and residents are coming together to face the crisis with resilience and solidarity. Authorities stress that with ongoing dry conditions and rising temperatures, the fire season is far from over, and preparedness remains crucial.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced that they will be providing $15 million to the Canadian Red Cross to work directly with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and the federal government will be matching every dollar donated to the Canadian Red Cross 2025 Saskatchewan Wildfires Appeal to help support families and individuals impacted by the wildfires.

Sanitary Sewer Flushing Notice: Starting Monday, June 9

The City of Martensville will be conducting sanitary sewer flushing next week, with a focus on areas in the south side of the city. Flushing is expected to start on June 9 and will be conducted daily for approximately 2 weeks.

This is a regular maintenance activity that helps prevent blockages and must be conducted to ensure the sewer system is operating efficiently.

The work will not affect most homeowners or cause any disruption to service, although there is a possibility that small spills, noise, and odors may occur. We recommend keeping toilet lids closed and drain plugs in all sinks and bathtubs when not in use.

Vandalism and Graffiti Incidents

Public facilities and private properties in our City have recently been impacted by acts of graffiti and vandalism. Last month, RCMP made two arrests in connection with cases of vandalism, both made possible because of tips from the public.

We encourage our community members to stay vigilant and report all criminal activity to the RCMP. Even if arrests can’t be made, these tips help keep law enforcement informed on these issues and prepared for future activities. Please check and monitor your property (back fences, garages, alleys, etc.) for signs of vandalism/graffiti and contact the RCMP if you’ve been victimized.

RCMP Address: 515 Centennial Dr S

RCMP Phone: 306-975-1610 or 310-RCMP for non emergencies

- Outdoor fires must be supervised and should be extinguished when finished

- Outdoor fires shouldn’t be lit when the weather conditions are conducive to creative a running fire

- Keep a garden hose or water source accessible to extinguish nearby fire

- No permit is required for private fireworks display, but those fireworks must be set off in a manner that would not create danger or nuisance to neighbors

Wag Doggy Day Care Holds Grand Re-Opening

Jocelyn Ottenbreit, Martensville Messenger

Wag hosted a Grand Re-Opening of their well-regarded facility for dogs and their families on Saturday, May 31st.

Those in attendance got to meet local pet vendors, as well as adoptable dogs from New Hope Dog Rescue, and enjoy swag bags for pups to go home with treats!

Due to increasing demand and a daily waitlist, the Wag team determined that an expansion was necessary. Their new facility is meticulously designed to include all the elements they envisioned: designated check-in/check-out areas, enlarged play zones, VIP (Very Important Pup) suites, a room with calming scents, and a cutting-edge air exchange and air conditioning system.

The 10,000 square foot building offers doggy daycare, overnight boarding, and soon, private park rentals and community social times. They have created an indoor-outdoor environment where dogs can stay active and safe year-round, thanks to a strong foundation of knowledge and community spirit.

“Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the grand opening. It was absolutely incredible! There was one point that I looked across and just saw dogs smiling and soooo many people and it made my heart so happy. We ran out of swag bags, and I saw lots of very lucky puppers going home with treats. The Wag community is truly amazing, and I am so grateful for each and every one of you,” stated owner Kyla on Facebook.

Wag is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, from 7am to 6pm with extended evening care from 7pm to 10pm to accommodate busy families and shift workers.

They are located at 910, 8th Street South (down the road from The Scrub Pet & Car Wash).

For more information, or to book in your pet, go to wagsask@gmail.com, their Facebook page; Wag.Sk, or call (306) 227-6818.

Martensville Hosts First-Ever Community Health Fair

The Martensville & Area Healthcare Advocacy Initiative (MAHAI) successfully launched its inaugural Community Health Fair on Saturday, May 31, 2025. Originally planned for the City Hall Green Space, the event was relocated indoors to the Martensville Civic Centre, thanks to the generosity of Great Plains College, due to wildfire smoke and strong winds.

From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., residents were invited to explore a wide range of health-related booths, enjoy free snacks, and engage in family-friendly activities. While the main fair was held indoors, some outdoor elements remained, including a Martensville Fire Department fire truck.

The event was designed to connect the community with local healthcare services, featuring a lineup of booths and information tables from: Saskatchewan Health Authority and local nurse practitioners, Martensville Youth Connection (MYC), Martensville Free Pantry, Saskatoon Sexual Assault & Information Centre, Usask Chronic Pain Clinic, Prairie Harm Reduction, Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy Martensville, Medavie Health Services West, Forever…in Motion Saskatchewan and more.

The fair offered something for everyone, from wellness and public health information to chronic pain support and youth outreach programs. It also emphasized the importance of building connections between residents and health professionals, as well as raising awareness of local health initiatives and services.

The group intends for the Community Health Fair to become an annual event, helping to fill healthcare gaps, promote wellness, and continue advocacy efforts across the Martensville region.

To learn more about MAHAI’s ongoing work and future events, follow their updates on social media.

The FCAA Warns Saskatchewan Residents of Unlicensed Door to Door Sellers Offering Paving Services

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) has received information about a reported incident in the Rosetown area regarding unlicensed door-to-door sellers offering paving services. Saskatchewan residents are reminded to only deal with door-to-door sellers licensed by the FCAA. All door-to-door salespeople, also known as direct sellers, are required to be licensed in Saskatchewan pursuant to The Direct Sellers Act and Regulations. They must also adhere to specific contract requirements and cancellation rules. To view a comprehensive list of licensed door-to-door sellers, visit FCAA411

If you decide to purchase goods or services from a door-to-door seller, consider the following tips:

• Read the contract carefully, including the fine print.

• Ask questions if you do not understand something.

• Do not feel pressured to make an immediate purchase.

• Keep down payments to a minimum; the higher the amount paid in advance, the greater the risk of loss.

• Never hand over a blank cheque.

• Avoid paying in cash or agreeing to services without documentation.

• Check the seller's rating and customer reviews on the Better Business Bureau directory at https://www.bbb.org/ or call 1-888-352-7601.

• All direct sales contracts must include a statement of cancellation rights.

• You have 10 days to cancel a contract without needing to provide a reason.

• If a contract is canceled, the vendor must refund all money received under the contract within 15 days of cancellation.
