Trials underway for Arrival electric bus

ARRIVAL has started trials of its new electric bus at a testing facility in the UK ahead of road trials due to commence with First Bus in the first quarter of this year. Arrival says its new vehicle will offer an improved experience for drivers and passengers as well as the engineers, cleaners, and fleet owners, with reduced costs for operators, making the transition to electric vehicles more economically viable. The bus deploys what Arrival terms its software ecosystem, providing full connectivity, digital customisation, and deep access to vehicle behaviour and data. It has a modular design with various configurations of length, range, battery, and pas-

4

senger capacity available. “This is a key milestone for Arrival and we’re thrilled to have started proving ground trials, where the bus is currently going through testing, ahead of EU certification and public road trials,” says Franck Dessenis, vice president of bus platform, Arrival. “We’ve seen a strong interest in the bus, specifically from governments who are looking to upgrade their public transportation networks, in order to achieve their zero- emission pledges.” Avinash Rugoobur, Arrival president adds: “We now look forward to bringing our vehicles, led by the Bus, to the market beginning in 2022, built by our microfactories and helping to make the air cleaner

around the world.” The first Arrival bus features up to three doors, with flexible passenger seating capacity across a fully flat floor. The vehicle also has wraparound exterior and interior screens, adaptable lighting, a transparent roof, and a number of digital features. The vehicle uses in-house components that are also found on the Arrival van and car, and Arrival’s lightweight recyclable composite materials. The company claims that the bus will be lighter than other battery-electric buses in the market today. Arrival is aiming to start production of the bus in Q2 2022. arrival.com

ADL begins volume deliveries of Berlin’s next generation double-decks

ALEXANDER Dennis has delivered its first series-production Enviro500 buses for Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in Berlin at the start of volume deliveries which will take the German capital’s f leet of ADL doubledecks to 200. BVG signed a multi-year framework contract with ADL for its next generation of double deck buses in 2018 and placed its main order in March 2021 following a successful testing programme with two pre-series vehicles delivered the previous year. Production has now ramped up at ADL’s factory in Scarborough to deliver up to five

January 2022

buses per week for most of 2022. ADL has recruited a local team and invested in office space, a workshop and a parts warehouse in Berlin to facilitate the deliveries and support the vehicles in service. The Enviro500 for BVG are 13.8m long and 4.06m high. Their specification was tailored to the customer’s requirements and while small modifications were made following experience with the preseries vehicles, the concept retains three doors and two staircases for rapid boarding and alighting on busy urban services while carrying up to 112 passengers, 80 of them seated. Paul Davies, ADL president &

managing director, says: “Double deckers have been a familiar sight on the streets of Berlin for generations and we are humbled to be the first international supplier of these iconic buses. Our global experience as the world’s leading manufacturer of double-deck buses has allowed us to develop a vehicle that respects local traditions and requirements while reducing energy use through our durable yet lightweight construction. “We look forward to seeing our fleet grow over the next year as all 200 new Enviro500 buses enter service in Berlin.” www.alexander-dennis.com

ComfortDelGro set to become UK’s second largest coach operator COMFORTDELGRO Corporation is aiming to be the UK’s second largest intercity coach operator following an £8.75million deal with Stagecoach Group to acquire Stagecoach’s remaining 35 per cent stake in Scottish Citylink Coaches, in addition to Megabus assets and the Falcon coach networks. Scottish Cit ylink, which became a 65 per cent-owned subsidiary of ComfortDelGro in 2005, operates 19 long-distance express services within Scotland, linking the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling and Inverness as well as some rural Highland communities. And as part of the deal, the ComfortDelGro Group will also acquire the marketing, retail

and customer service activities of Stagecoach’s Megabus UK coach business and the Falcon coach service which operates in the south west of England. This deal with ComfortDelGro follows the earlier announcement of a proposed merger between Stagecoach and National Express, and perhaps removes a potential competition constraint to that agreement, given the dominance of NX in the long-distance coach market. Megabus, which commenced operations in August 2003, offers a long-distance coach network linking 90 locations in England and Wales. The Falcon Service, which was launched in 2016, is the first and only public transport link that connects Plymouth, Exeter,

Cullompton, Wellington and Taunton with Bristol Airport and Bristol city centre. It operates 19 journeys a day, seven days a week. The ComfortDelGro Group, which currently operates 100 inter-city coaches across the UK, will see this number increase to 150 upon completion of the deal which is expected at the end of February 2022 when ComfortDelGro will become the second largest inter-city coach operator in the country with a market share of about 11 per cent. ComfortDelGro already operates inter- city coach operations in Scotland, London, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick as well as Metroline, which is the second largest bus operator in London. www.comfortdelgro.com

Nottinghamshire takes delivery of Enviro200EVs

BYD UK and Alexander Dennis have delivered four 10.2m Enviro200EV electric buses to Nottinghamshire County Council, the first two of which have now entered service in Mansfield. These are the first BYD ADL electric buses in this 10.2m size specification to be delivered to a customer outside of London. The first two of the four zeroemission pure-electric buses now

join the county council’s expanding f leet of ECOconnect buses operated by Stagecoach East Midlands, as part of the council’s commitment to climate change. It is the second electric bus order from Nottinghamshire County Council, who first successfully introduced two BYD ADL Enviro200EV buses to its fleet in 2018; these were 10.8m in length. Their reliability and efficiency have been

the catalyst for this second order for a further four buses, which have capacity for 77 passengers. In addition to funding from the Department of Transport’s Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme, real estate developer Lindhurst Group has contributed towards the running of two of the new buses. www.byd.com www.alexander-dennis.com

Three major groups sign electric charging joint venture agreement

THR EE leading commercial vehicle manufacturers Daimler Truck, Traton and Volvo have signed a binding agreement to create a joint venture to install and operate a high- performance public charging network for battery electric, heavy-duty longhaul trucks and coaches across Europe. The companies say they are committed to initiating and accelerating the necessary buildup of charging infrastructure for the increasing number of customers of electric vehicles in Europe and contribute to climate-neutral transportation in Europe by 2050. The establishment of the joint venture is subject to regulatory approvals. The planned venture, which would be equally owned by the three parties, is scheduled to start operations in 2022 following completion of regulatory approval processes. The companies are together committing to invest €500million, which is claimed to be by far the largest

10

charging infrastructure investment in the European heavy-duty truck industry to date. The plan is to install and operate at least 1,700 high-performance green energy charging points, on and close to highways, as well as at logistic and destination points, within five years of the establishment of the JV. The number of charging points is with time intended to be increased significantly by seeking additional partners as well as public funding. The future JV is planned to operate under its own corporate identity and be based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Martin Daum, CEO Daimler Truck, says: “It is remarkable that three fierce competitors in the area of trucks and vehicle technology are taking action together to start establishing the needed charging infrastructure. Together with Volvo Group and the Traton Group, we want to send a clear signal to all relevant stakeholders to follow our lead and act now.”

Christian Levin, CEO, Traton Group, which includes the MAN and Scania brands, adds: “A collaboration with strong competitors like Daimler Truck and Volvo Group might seem unusual. However, the topic is of crucial importance and this unique cooperation will make us faster and more successful in delivering the transformational action needed to tackle climate change.” Martin Lundstedt, president and CEO Volvo Group, says: “Innovative partnerships like these will enable the much- needed change that will benefit our customers - and the entire industry. This is both a historical milestone in the transformation towards fossil-free transport and a breakthrough that shows Volvo Group’s commitment to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and a netzero emissions rolling f leet by 2050 at the latest.” volvo.com traton.com daimlertruck.com

ADL and Kiwi Bus Builders complete first extra-large electric bus for Howick & Eastern by Transdev

ALEXANDER Dennis, together with its local assembly partner Kiwi Bus Builders, has completed the first extra-large electric buses for New Zealand customer Howick & Eastern by Transdev, part of Transdev Australasia. The pair of BYD ADL Enviro200EV XLB will be operated on Auckland Transport services. They are the first electric buses to have been assembled in New Zealand as part of the renewed partnership between ADL and Kiwi Bus Builders, based in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. Developed for the specific requirements of New Zealand legislation, the vehicles carry 75 passengers without the requireJanuary 2022

ment of an overweight permit. This takes away the risk of higher costs down the line due to road user charges. ADL general manager for New Zealand, Tony Moore, says: “Having gone through the final compliance inspection of the vehicles with Kiwi Bus Builders, I can confirm they have done a fantastic job, especially against the background of lockdowns, distancing restrictions, supply chain issues and port congestion. “Assembling these vehicles is not just about supporting Kiwi Bus Builders, but also about other local suppliers and the wider communities in which they are based. We are looking to further increase our

local supply chain in New Zealand in the coming months. We also continue to enjoy the full support of the BYD Australia team led by Wing You.” Richard Drummond, managing director, Kiwi Bus Builders, adds: “It’s great to be assembling ADL vehicles again and to understand how we can build these vehicles at volume to meet the government’s zero emission targets.” New Zealand is preparing to fully transition its bus fleet to zero emission vehicles by 2035 as part of a wider set of measures intended to help meet the country’s 2050 carbon neutral target. www.alexander-dennis.com

Nine Enviro2000EVs for Stagecoach in Perth

STAGECOACH East Scotland has taken delivery of nine electric BYD/ADL buses for use on local services in Perth. The buses were part-funded by the Scottish Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme. The fleet of nine Enviro200EV single-decks will operate on busy routes 1 and 2, connecting housing areas with the city centre, retail and leisure developments, Perth Royal Infirmary, educational establishments and local football ground. The zero emission buses were built locally in Falkirk by ADL in partnership with BYD as the manufacturer’s partner for electric buses in the UK and Ireland.

16

Stagecoach is introducing a total of 46 new fully electric buses in key transport networks in Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Perth as part of SULEBS, all of which are supplied by the BYD ADL partnership. Scottish minister for transport Graeme Dey says: “By helping operators invest in greener fleets, we can support our green recovery and keep more people moving with fewer carbon emissions and better air quality as a result. “More journeys are made by bus compared to any other public transport mode and a vibrant bus industry can provide the solutions to complex challenges in our society. With the buses being manu-

factured in Falkirk, we are also helping the Scottish bus industry and wider supply chain.” ADL president & managing director Paul Davies adds: “Stagecoach continues to be at the front of investment in sustainable mobility and this new electric bus f leet for Perth is further testament to the group’s ambition in supporting not only the Scottish Government in its targets, but also underpinning skilled jobs and apprenticeships in the world-class UK bus manufacturing industry.” www.alexander-dennis.com www.byd.com January 2022

Hydrogen supply deal for Go-Ahead

GO-A HEA D has agreed a 15-year hydrogen supply deal with Air Products to power a fleet of fuel cell buses in the Gatwick Airport, Crawley and Horley area. The single-deck Wrightbus Hydroliner buses will be delivered in June 2022 and will be the first hydrogen-powered vehicles in Go-Ahead’s fleet of more than 6,000 buses. Hydrogen will be stored at the Metrobus Crawley depot in liqJanuary 2022

uid form, before being converted to gas held in tanks on the roof. The single-deck fuel cell buses are funded in part with money from UK Government and European Union zero-emission bus schemes, plus investment from Gatwick Airport. A further order of 34 buses would bring the fleet to 54 vehicles, which would be the largest local fleet of hydrogen buses deployed in Europe to date. Christian Schreyer, group chief executive, Go-Ahead Group, says:

“This is our first hydrogen supply deal, and it represents a milestone in our plans to transition Go-Ahead’s entire fleet of buses to zero emission fuel. “We’re delighted to be working with Air Products and with Wrightbus. This is an example of what can be achieved through a mixture of public and private funding, and of co-operation between different environmentally responsible partners.” go-ahead.com
