Equipmake electric bus heads to Buenos Aires for in-service trials without the need for a separate transmission – and a Semikron SKAIOverinverter.thelast 12 months, Equip make’s engineering team has put the new bus through an exten sive durability programme in and around Norfolk, with thousands of test miles completed on proving grounds, city centres and motor ways. Equipmake estimates the new electric Agrale MT17.0LE will have a range of up to 150 miles (240km). Charging will be carried out at a depot overnight via a CSS2 DC charging point. The electric Agrale, capable of carrying 70 passengers, will be operated over the next 12 months by DOTA, the largest bus opera tor in Buenos Aires. Following the successful completion of the trial, the objective is for mass manufacture to begin in Buenos Aires with Agrale and Todo Bus, using licensed Equipmake ZED technology.IanFoley, managing direc tor, Equipmake, says: “On behalf of everyone at Equipmake I am delighted that, following the completion of final test ing here in Norfolk, the Agrale MT17.0LE featuring our ZED system, now begins its journey to Buenos Aires for in-service trials. Through this innovative Advanced Propulsion Centrefunded project, we have worked closely with Agrale and Todo Bus along with other key partners, and the result is a state-of-the-art yet cost-effective bus. “We are now looking forward to the start of the trial and the potential for this new vehicle is huge. Buenos Aires has around 16,000 buses on its streets –roughly twice the size of Lon don’s fleet. There’s no doubt that electric buses can play a sig nificant role in helping Argen tina’s capital hit its 2050 net zero objective.”Equipmake’s ZED system is also used in the Jewel E doubledeck developed with Beulas which will soon begin in-service trials with Go-Ahead London.

Cardiff Bus trial of Mercedes-Benz eCitaro tackles heatwave

CARDIFF Bus, which already operates Yutong electric buses, has carried out a 12-day trial of the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro dem onstration vehicle. The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, now equipped with the latest NMC2 batteries for increased range, entered the fleet to dem onstrate its capabilities on Cardiff’s busier routes linking surrounding communities to Wales’ capital city.

In addition to the demonstra tion, July 2022 also saw Cardiff Bus take delivery of an ex dem onstration Mercedes-Benz Citaro hybrid previously operated by EvoBus UK. Joining an already large fleet of Mercedes- Benz Citaro buses, the low emission certified hybrid model should deliver up to an 8.5 per cent fuel saving compared to a Euro VI diesel-powered Citaro and lower exhaust emissions.

MINISTER for Buses Baroness Vere has launched a county-wide ‘Tap & Cap’ pilot scheme that aims to save money for bus cus tomers in Cornwall. The scheme implements a cap on daily and weekly fares. Passengers tap their card when they get on the bus, and tap again when they alight, and are charged the correct fare automatically. Regardless of the number of journeys taken in a day customers will not pay more than £5 and no more than £20 for a week.Baroness Vere says: “At a time when many people are feeling the pinch, every potential sav ing matters. That is why we have an initial capacity of 500 buses per year with the option to expand capacity in later years. The initial investment to equip the facility and convert it to Ebusco standards is expected to be €10million.

EBUSCO is to lease a new 21,000 sq m facility at the Renault Cléon site at Metropole Rouen to set up its French headquarters and production facility. The move is aimed to facilitate its future growth ambitions in France and south west Europe. The Clean site is being trans formed as part of a move towards 100 per cent electric vehicles and Ebusco will contribute through its experience of the electrifica tion of public transport and the integration of lightweight mate rials in its bus design.

Ebusco CEO Peter Bijvelds says: “After the establishment of a development team in France two years ago, the installation of a sec ond production site in Europe, as well as a new headquarters for our French subsidiary, is an important step for Ebusco in its development in France and Southern Europe.

Transport has key role in shaping sustainable suburbs, says UTG report

15August 2022 g reenbusandcoachgpolicy

TRANSPORT has a key role to play in shaping a new and sus tainable future for suburban life, argues a new report, ‘The Good Life: The role of transport in shaping a new and sustainable era for suburbs’ published by the Urban Transport Group. The report highlights that around 80 per cent of Britons live in suburbs, yet these areas are often neglected when it comes to transport planning, losing out to powerful voices in the city and the countryside. It argues that given that suburbs are where most of us live, there can be no decarbonisation of transport without specific meas ures to decarbonise transport in theThesuburbs.report presents four foun dations of suburbs for a new era: Help people to access more of what they need locally; Pro vide family-friendly sustainable transport choices; Prioritise gen tle densification around sustain able transport infrastructure; Provide reliable, convenient con nections to the nearest town or city and key employment sites In addition to the four foun dations, the report urges policy makers to join the dots between transport and the decarbonisa tion and adaptation of the sub urbs more widely, including using community microgrids to power homes and transport, and the integration of blue and green assets, like rain gardens and green roofs, into transport infrastructure.Thereportstates: “We are a nation of suburbanites. However, the ubiquity of suburban living is often not reflected in trans port policy. We frequently fail to fully engage with, or even men tion, suburban transport patterns and needs. Instead, cities, and to a lesser extent, rural communi ties tend to monopolise the policy landscape.”RebeccaFuller, assistant direc tor, Urban Transport Group, and author of the report, says: “The pandemic has forced us to move away from the idea that suburban transport is mostly about moving commuters in and out of town and city centres. The suburbs feature many more journey types, made by a diverse group of people, and these journeys now need to be made more sustainably in the face of the climate crisis.

“Far more attention needs to be made to suburban transport planning now than it has in the past. This report sets out the transport foundations for a new era for suburbs, and whilst it pre sents some potential solutions, it also aims to trigger wider debate about the role transport can play and the specific transport solu tions that will help suburbs to thrive in a sustainable and equi tableTheway.”Good Life: The role of transport in shaping a new and sustainable era for suburbs – can be downloaded here.

SWITCHING car journeys to bus and coach is essential to achiev ing the UK’s net zero emissions goal, according to a new report from the Confederation of Pas senger Transport. The UK’s net zero commit ments require a decarbonisa tion of the transport sector, the highest emitting sector and the only one whose emissions have increased since 1990. CPT says this requires ambitious action to tackle car greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which account for the majority of surface transport emissions.TheDecarbonisation Dividend report, created alongside WPI Economics, found that if every person in Great Britain switched just over one car trip to bus or coach per month each year (13 per year) by 2030, it would create a cumulative reduction of 2 mil lion tons of CO2e. What’s more, a shift of just over two trips per month (26 per year) journeys by 2050 would result in a cumulative reduction of 19.5 million tons of CO2e.The findings of the report also identified health and societal benefits that could be reaped in years to come due to this shift. Such benefits include cumulative reductions in congestion valued at £29.4billion and cumulative health benefits worth £14.9billion – enough to build 33 new NHS hospitals.Commenting on the report, Graham Vidler, CPT chief execu tive, says: “Without shifting demand from cars to buses and coaches, the UK will fall short of its net zero ambitions. “The report shows that small changes in the way we travel can create a big difference. To unlock these benefits, each of us needs to switch just one journey per month from car to bus by the end of this decade, two journeys per month by 2050. That’s it.”

Shifting journeys from car to bus and coach once a month could save millions of tons of CO2e emissions, says CPT

Additional consumer-focused research conducted by CPT iden tified’ attitudes toward bus and coach travel. Almost half of car drivers interviewed (46%) have considered taking the bus more compared to this time last year, with half of those (49%) doing so to be Vidlergreener.adds: “Our findings show that around half of Brits want to have a more balanced mix between using their car and taking the bus or a coach. With many parts of the country set to invest in speeding up journey times there’s a great opportunity for people to start shifting some of their journeys.”
