“Lord, teach us to step outside ourselves,” proclaims a Tweet from Pope Francis. “Teach us to go into the streets and manifest your love,” he prays. His Holiness is pleading for us to embrace and engage…to penetrate the “outer boundaries” in our lives that often serve to protect routine and comfort. His words suggest it is through inimitable experiences we will come to know our Lord, ourselves, and those we come in contact with daily.

This summer’s issue of the Messenger reaches out to share the stories of those at Marquette with individual and peerless stories. Although maybe not as well-known as the many images of the Pope reaching out to place his hands on the ill, disfigured and destitute, the features in this issue are a tribute to Marquette’s courageous and unique.

For many, they are taking the path less traveled.

The summer 2014 Messenger articulates and illustrates the unprecedented success we have earned this past school year. Working collaboratively to gain AdvancED accreditation, maintaining our 4-Star Exemplary status with the State of Indiana, winning a State title in Boy’s Basketball, and producing a continued 100% acceptance to college are a few of our proclaimed accolades.

This issue takes a closer look at those individuals who collectively nurture and envelope our mission of cultivating a relationship with Jesus Christ and preparing one academically for the college classroom. Stories in this issue include a teacher feature transformation from Stock Market to classroom, a glimpst into the Class of 2018 and an expose’ on one truly ambitious graduate. The stories move beyond comfort zones.

These stories capture the inimitable atmosphere and accomplishments at Marquette Catholic High School.

They demonstrate the courage and willingness to be open, to embrace and to engage. For these are the experiences that can often lead to self-fulfillment, love and the presence of God in our lives.

Be True Be Gentle Be Kind Superintendent Dr. Barbara O’Block shares a message with the Class of 2014

I’d like to begin with a short story - apocryphal to be sure.

A stressed-out woman, driving on a busy boulevard, was tailgating an honest man. Suddenly the light turned yellow, just in front of him. The man did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

Well, the tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection with him.

She was still in mid-rant when she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.

The officer ordered her to exit the car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell.

After a couple hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door; he escorted her back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

The arresting officer said, “I’m sorry for this mistake, ma’am, but you see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing the horn, flipping the guy off in front of you, and cursing a blue streak at him.

And, I noticed the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ bumper sticker and the ‘Follow Me to Sunday School’ bumper sticker and the chromeplated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, ma’am, I assumed you had stolen the car.”

I am sharing this story because I think, dear graduates, that we can take away at least three messages from this tale:

Be true to yourself. Be who you say you are.

Obviously a car decorated with many Christian symbols and sayings would imply that a Christian would be driving it - hence the officer’s skepticism when observing the lady driver’s behavior.

Be true to yourself and have the courage to follow your heart. You will face doubt, there will be difficulties and perhaps long odds, but that does not give you permission to

take your unhappiness, your frustrations, or your anger out on others.

No matter the circumstance, try harder. There is no substitute for hard work. Dig deeper, push yourself - Get out of your comfort zone - this is the only path to success and excellence - you never know what you are capable of until you try.

And at all times - remember what you learned right at the beginning of your educational experience - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Never let that go. Keep your moral compass close - there is an etiquette of trust - by which you will be judged - be respectful, be earnest, be generous - these are hallmarks of a mature, Christian adult.

Now many graduation speeches are similar so you might wonder what was exceptional about Saunder’s address . . . well, his topic: Saunders spoke to the graduates about KINDNESS. He urged the graduates to do ambitious things - to finish college, to travel, get rich, get famous, innovate, lead, fall in love, make and lose fortunes,- but as he told them - to the extent that you can, err in the direction of kindness.

What does this say about our American society when a speech about kindness goes viral - are we so far removed from that reality?

Be gentle. Gentleness is knowing how to do ordinary things with tenderness. Gentleness does not imply weakness - rather gentleness is strength under control. Gentleness is counter cultural - we live in a world that is sometimes harsh and rude - a lack of civility is sadly becoming a norm.

Pope Francis tells us to “put on love and your life’s journey will be joyful, because you will find many friends to journey with you.” No matter the circumstance, no matter how high the stakes, no matter how passionate you become, never attempt to humiliate, demean or demoralize - but always love one another, learn to listen, to understand, to forgive, to be accommodating, to be accepting and to help others, everybody, with no one excluded, no one marginalized, no one ostracized.

Gentleness requires discipline - the discipline of counting to ten. The discipline or the art of letting go.

Start being kind from this moment forward - it will become a habit.

When people or events unnerve us, distress us, or anger us it is because we have allowed them to hook us.

Breathe out - let it go - then return to the situation selfpossessed.

You are Blazers. A blaze is not the tiny flame at the end of a matchstick - a blaze is a serious - usually very large fire - be “on fire” in all you pursue - be alive, full of energy, ingenuity and optimism. Your family, your community, your Church need you, your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joyful happiness that you bring to whatever you do.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Your gifts and talents are never diminished by sharing them with others.

Our communities - the community of the family, the community of school, the civic community, the community of labor are made of the gentle concerns that people show each other every day - our communities are made of small gestures, of attentiveness, of service and of sacrifices.

Be gentle. Hear with your ears - listen with your heart; look with your eyes - see with your heart; talk with your mouth - speak from your heart; touch with your hands - handle with your heart.

Remember Christ’s promise - Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Be kind. When the Irish classical scholar and poet, Henry James, was asked by his nephew what he ought to do in life, James responded, The first is to be kind; The second is to be kind; The third is to be kind.

Lou Holtz - famed Notre Dame football coach told his players that the answer to three questions would determine their success or failure:

Am I committed to the task at hand? Can people trust me to do my best? Do I care about other people and show it?

And then Holtz said: if your answers to these questions are yes, there is no way you can fail.

Tom Burke – the youngest of ten – your typical Irish, Catholic family from the south side of Chicago – married Marquette alumna, Julie Barry. After 25 years as a member of the Chicago Board of Trade as a commodity futures broker, Tom decided to deepen his connection to Marquette as more than just “married to an alumna.” Tom accepted a position in the theology department to bring his distinctive life experience to the theology curriculum.

While Tom works towards his Masters in Theology at the Catholic Theological Union on the weekends, he teaches at MQT during the week. From applying C.S. Lewis to Breaking Bad to teaching how to live faithfully, Tom shows the students that God is present.

Tom tells his story…

After several years competing in the trading pits of the Chicago Board of Trade, the business gradually changed in ways I found unappealing. The evolving market mechanisms eventually took away the human, personal element. The industry migrated from a trading floor onto a computer screen, and consequently, all the sizzle for me went missing.

Julie and I always wanted to try different things. As our children became more independent, we found ourselves ‘playing the back nine’, but were not quite ready for retirement. Volunteer work and a return to graduate school eventually led me to consider teaching.

Through a fortunate stroke of serendipity, I came to Marquette. But in a way, I really never left high school; for the last fourteen years, our own kids have been enrolled in high schools. And I think this parent perspective afforded many insights to me as to how teens think, feel, react and mature.

It is a challenge for educators to ‘bring everyone in’. Teaching Theology is no exception. There are no formulas, facts, or concrete proofs on the blackboard for ‘the science of God”. Memorization is not a necessary skill set. Moreover, the level of Christian formation is different for every student. What is required for my class is introspection. Morality, Ethics, the lessons of the Gospel – these can only be learned through an individual’s personal probe. As I remind my students, “there are no wrong responses to the questions here – but use complete sentences!”

The bricks and mortar may be the same as when Julie attended Marquette back in the ‘70s, but the constant dynamic of this place is stunning. Jim White brings a refreshing culture and curriculum to Marquette. I enjoy working with the team that Mr. White has assembled, but more than that, I especially appreciate the kids coming through the doors. Besides academics, we cultivate an ongoing spiritual maturity. We get kids of all stripes, and Theology is a great stop for some real life exposure. It is meant to be that part of learning where Scripture and contemporary culture converge. It is meant to expose that point where the rubber meets the road.

A high school functions as one of the pillars of a community. Marquette provides lessons for all those little things that our world overlooks – things like humility and a Christian work ethic. Our secular, pluralistic society doesn’t seem to foster any conscientious thinking. Marquette Catholic strives to fill that void in young adults.

To keep our values grounded in Christian virtues is a life-long assignment. Spiritual progress may pause, but it never stops. Helping kids to realize the presence of God in their lives and to expose the constancy of His love is something I am blessed to be tasked with. I love it.

In early April, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to attend the 7th Festival of Arts and Sciences in Loches, France with 6 other Marquette students and 1 chaperone. When I started at MQT I was only 12 years old.

I was homeschooled by my mother and had very little world experience.

My name is Jenna Szaday and I was the only freshman to take part on this trip and I was only 13. On this trip, I learned that knowledge is more than just learning inside of a classroom. To really be wise, we have to expand our knowledge to people and ideas outside of our comfort zone.

I had never been on an airplane or to an airport before I boarded the plane to Paris, for a long 8-9 hour ride. I’d never been out of the Midwest before I crossed the Atlantic Ocean to a completely different continent.

However, this trip promised to introduce me to a new culture and experience the world like never before. We were given many breathtaking opportunities while in France, starting with the first day we got there.

We landed in Paris the next day, early in the morning on April 5th.

A few hours later, a representative of St. Denis, the school who was hosting the festival, greeted us. The bus ride from Paris to Loches is approximately 2 hours, unless you get lost like we did! We arrived very early the next morning at the hostel we would be staying at almost all week. This hostel would house many of the delegations from the other countries so it was a perfect opportunity to engage with the other delegates.

Over the course of the week, we took trips to two castles and Tours, a popular shopping center of France. We took part in two parades; at the end of the last one we lit up paper balloons with torches. We also had practices and performances. Every delegation had to prepare a piece to share with the others; we decided to perform the song We are the World by Michael Jackson.

On Thursday, the last official day of the festival, we split up and stayed with host families in Loches. The families we all stayed with were very kind and welcoming. We also had our last performance that day. The attendees of this final concert were very excited to see us perform and many sang along. The feeling of standing up on this stage, looking out onto so many faces from all over the world who are all joined together with you, is the best feeling in the world. At that moment we really were the world. As we finished the song, I knew at that point that I would truly never forget this experience.

After the festival was over, we got to spend a day at the school.

Seeing how the classes went on, all in French, was so interesting and eye opening. We stayed with host families in Paris for two days. They took us on tours of famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and Notre Dame.

I met so many new friends, and learned so much about, not only the French culture, but also cultures from all over the world. I got to try new food and see unique landmarks across France. Marquette has awakened a taste for international travel that I hope to be able to continue exploring.

2018: In A Class

Joe Disser, the son of Peter Disser and Leigh Ann ‘86 Flora, has already traveled the world.

Through CISV he has seen Norway, Turkey, Nepal and India as well as most of the United States and Canada.

Joe graduated from Notre Dame School in Michigan City and brings to MQT his brood of buddies that he has been with since pre-school.

He is excited to meet new people and is impressed with the diversity he finds in our small community. He likes to hear different points of view - giving him a different perspective.

He is always looking for new adventures and that is one of the things he is most excited to find at Marquette Catholic High School - from interesting classes to international travel to ski trips to sports Joe is ready to take advantage of it all.

Caleb and Ashley Sheets, the son and daughter of Jimmy & Karen Sheets. They are twins.

They are funny, smart and always smiling.

Caleb and Ashley graduated from Queen of All Saints School in Michigan City and being two of seven children, they know what it is like to be part of a larger group of people - always ready to help and jump in.

They love being twins - having fun together and never feeling alone.

Caleb and Ashley can’t wait to be a part of all the learning that goes on at MQT and all of the new opportunities that they will be invited to take part in.

Meeting new people, though, will probably be their favorite thing of all.

Megan, Brendan and Sarah Schornack, the daughers and son of Kristen Schornack. They are triplets.

The threesome attended Barker Middle School in Michigan City.

According to The Babycenter, their mom had a 1 in 8,000 chance of having triplets; well Kristen certainly should have played the lottery!

She is definitely a winner though with these three!

Brendan earned one of the tops scores on MQT’s entrance exam - awarding him a $1,500 renewable scholarship to attend MQT. Megan and Sarah weren’t too far behind though - these three are surely a bright bunch.

Megan, Brendan and Sarah are athletes, scholars, best friends and now BLAZERS!

Bryan Gonzalez is the son of Mexican immigrants Arturo and Irma Gonzalez. He speaks Spanish and English - but at home, he will tell you, they speak “Spanglish.”

Bryan graduated from St. Stanislaus Kostka School in Michigan City.

He enjoys technology, foreign culture and learning new languages. He says that he loves to learn about anything exotic and rare.

Bryan also earned one of the top scores on MQT’s entrance exam - proving that his hard work pays off.

His personality, along with his love of learning, will certainly get Bryan far.

I didn’t mind sitting on a 72 foot yacht in the Michigan City Harbor talking to Ian Smith ‘14 about his MQT experience and what he wanted to do with his life.

Ian came to Marquette Catholic High School the beginning of his sophomore year. He moved to Michigan City from Warsaw to live with his dad. The two bachelors live on their boat in the Michigan City Harbor just down the street from MQT. Not too many 17 year olds can say they live on a boat - or would want to - but Ian certainly did.

He was ready to try something new, so he left Warsaw, his school of over 2,000 kids and came to MQT.

Ian’s love of MQT was instant and evident in everything he did.

We knew Ian was special the moment we met him. He has a quiet, humble confidence about him. He is not afraid to be or want something different from the crowd - from living on a boat, introducing the bow tie into the uniform, becoming the manager of a state champion basketball team to wanting to be a ship’s captain.

Ian’s first unparalleled mark on the MQT family was when he took over the manager position of the boys basketball team - and took over he did. He worked hard making sure everything was always in order, the coaching staff had what the needed and the boys were ready to play. He knew what everyone needed before they did - he was always one step ahead.

I will never forget on honors day, Ian’s junior year, when the basketball team presented him with a letter jacket as a token of their thanks for helping them keep it together. Ian was speechless - too touched to even speak.

As we all got to know Ian we learned that he did not just want to live on a boat - he wanted to captain one. During the summer Ian manages boats for a handful of people, but that is nothing compared to what he will be doing in just a few years.

Ian’s next stop is SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx to pursue a career as a ship’s captain. There has never been an MQT student who has wanted to take this course - but Ian felt that MQT learned beside him and that there’s nothing the school would not help him accomplish. Ian told me that he was always able to express himself and that everyone would always take time to understand what was best for him.

I am looking forward to a few years from now when I pull into the harbor to meet with Ian again - only this time he will be the captain of his own ship.

The Radtke sisters make a happy place for young MQT alumni.

On an unseasonably gloomy June afternoon when all around me seemed grey and lackluster, I had the great fortune of a meeting with the three Radtke sisters, Marquette Alumni and owners of Bridges Waterside Grille in Michigan City. Tucked between the two bridges spanning Trail Creek, Bridges, as it is called for short, is anything but gloomy. From the bright orange tiki bar to the multi colored strings of buoys hanging at the front door, the building is bursting with color - but that’s not all it’s bursting with. Upon walking through the sliding door into the kitchen, my dismal day was transformed. I could barely hear the introductions of the sisters over the laughing and cheerful chatter in the room. It was as though I had been thrown in the midst of a family party - and in many ways I suppose I had.

The crowded room was filled with over a dozen twentysomethings, all joking, smiling and carrying on. For the most part I went unnoticed. After further inspection of the situation I realized that the Radtke sisters were not the only siblings in the room.

Several brother/sister duos were preparing for their evening shifts. However, had I not known, I would have thought the entire group were somehow related. The atmosphere was thick with the sense of family.

I began my interview at a table with Anna ‘06 and Ellie ‘97 while their oldest sister Nicole ‘94 sat behind me going over paper work. In the midst of their 13th season, the sisters were excited and eager to share their story.

It all began when Ellie and Nicole took a few days away from their jobs in Chicago to come home for Anna’s confirmation.

The girls’ father, Dan Radtke, had just purchased the land now known as Pioneer Pier. Radtke is the owner of Pioneer Lumber and currently runs The Bridge Inn - a two building, 14 room inn located next to the restaurant. At that time of purchase, The Bridge Inn was an old scuba center that Mr. Radtke used as a “man cave” of sorts, and the building that now houses Bridges was a perch and beer stop called The Seafood Delight. When their father approached them with the idea of opening the restaurant, Nicole and Ellie, who were freshly out of college, were a little caught off guard. “We never dreamed we would do this, but our father has always owned businesses so we figured we could give it a try,” said Ellie. Thirteen years later their hard work speaks for itself.

Anna, who was just thirteen years old when Bridges opened, is now the restaurant manager, while her boyfriend, Justin ‘01, manages the bar. The business is owned by Ellie and Nicole - the self proclaimed “owner and toilet cleaner.” Their father Dan acts as a silent investor, but also serves as carpenter, electrician, legal expert and grandpa among other things. The girls’ mother spent many seasons helping at the restaurant, but has now been promoted to head babysitter for Ellie’s daughter (6 months) and son (4 years) as well as Nicole’s two boys (ages 7 and 3). It seems that everyone plays numerous roles in the business and no one is above scrubbing floors or scouring bathrooms. “When I got involved I honestly thought it would be more glamorous,” says

Anna, but all three sisters will tell you they wouldn’t have it any other way. While the girls never imagined they would be running a restaurant, Nicole describes the experience as extremely rewarding, “When you look around and your customers are enjoying themselves and everything is flowing it’s just great.”

After graduating from Marquette, Anna went on to study Journalism at Indiana University while her older sisters both went to Marquette University in Milwaukee. Nicole studied business and Ellie studied Communications and Public Relations. When asked what the best part of running the restaurant was, Anna replied, “Working with my sisters. I get to work with my best friends every day.” Ellie elaborated saying, “It’s great that there are 3 of us, we all bring something different to the table, which creates balance. Also, there is always a tie breaker.” The girls’ husbands are also a huge help. They’ve all tended bar, washed dishes and repaired coolers. “Pretty much if you’re involved with us girls in any way, you’re involved in the restaurant,” said Nicole.

Even though Bridges is very much a Radtke family business, the presence of the Marquette family is undeniable. Out of 23 total employees, 15 of them are Marquette graduates - and this is no coincidence. The girls seek to hire Marquette students or graduates, and have for many years. Most of the kids working here are the third or fourth sibling in their family to hold summer employment at the restaurant. The three sisters describe their employees from Marquette as “hardworking, trustworthy kids, who are excited to come to work and excited to see each other.”

Nicole said of her staff, “They all have a great relationship with each other. They hold each other accountable and they can be trusted.”

Working at Bridges certainly isn’t your run of the mill summer job. While shooting photographs of this group of kids, I couldn’t help but smile. It was the closest thing to hanging out at summer camp that I had seen in a while. You could really feel the unique bonds they have formed. The sense of camaraderie among the staff is unparalleled. The excitement they share for coming to work is rare and the service they provide is second to none. Whether they are just starting out or returning home from a year away at college, these young people are gaining a truly priceless experience.

Abigail Schmidt entered the 2014 season as the clear leader of the Blazers.

Following the departure of fours seniors from the 2013 squad, Schmidt would have to step up in a big way.

Especially with the transition of a new coach taking over.

Ray Silvas returned to the Blazers after stepping away in 2010. Schmidt responded with an outstanding season. The junior went 15-2 while advancing to Regionals as a single competitor.

For her efforts, Schmidt was the 2014 News Dispatch Player of the Year and The Times Female Athlete of the year for MQT.

Ryan Fazekas is a big man.

The 6’8 all-everything swingman committed to Providence this past season. That was one thing that he was able to check off his list of goals to accomplish. Still, one thing remained. A goal that he had set out to accomplish from his first days at Marquette Catholic, to win a State Championship.

The Blazers (20-6) won the Greater South Shore Conference and Fazekas led the way, averaging 14 points per game. For his efforts he was selected as a 1st Team AllConference member and a Junior All-Star. Everyone that had been around Marquette for the last few years knew that Fazekas was special. But it wasn’t until the State Championship game that he showed a glimpse of just how magical he can be. Fazekas tied a state record for three pointers made in a state championship game with 7 on his way to 34 points. His highest total of the season.

What more could be done?

The MQT Blazers entered the 2013-14 season with high expectations. After two years of reaching the sectional championship game and falling short, the Blazers were in a new sectional. However, Sectional 49 was considered by many as the toughest sectional in the state.

Following their first conference championship since the inception of the Greater South Shore Conference, the Blazers were riding high. Not only were they conference champions, but they had finished one of the most difficult regular season schedules in recent memory, as the Blazers did not face a single 1A opponent.

But still the question remained, how would they do in sectionals? Would they be able to advance?

Well, not only was the answer a resounding yes, but they were able to keep the momentum going all the way to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. When it was all said and done, the Blazers (20-6) were conference champions as well as sectional, regional, semi-state and state champions. The first for basketball in school history.

As a freshmen, he was part of a conference championship team and regional qualifier.

In 2014, he was the only returning golfer from an outstanding team. The Blazers went through a youth movement this season and Paholski was the unquestioned leader.

Marquette’s #1 was solid all year as Paholski returned to Regionals, this time as a single competitor.

In shooting a 79, he was only three shots away from advancing to State, an outstanding feat for the sophomore.

In 2015, expectations will be high for Blazer boys golf, and for Paholski, as he looks to continue a tradition of excellence.

God is good all the time. Every day my first prayer is one of gratitude to our all-loving God for the gift of another day, the gift of faith and Baptism, the gift of Jesus Himself who loves us so much that He gave Himself unto death and never tires of forgiving my own sins and shortcomings.

I then thank Jesus for the gift of the Church and for calling me to serve His people as priest and bishop. I find my peace and serenity in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, and I ask Jesus each day to touch me very powerfully during Mass and equally as well every person that will participate at Mass.

I was ordained as priest and bishop to be servant leader of the faith community entrusted to me. My first priority is to grow deeper in the love of Jesus so that I might share His love with those whom I serve. It is very important for me to spend 45 minutes in prayer at the beginning of each day and an hour in prayer later, in addition to celebrating Holy Mass, praying the rosary, and various other devotional prayers.

My goal through these past 22 years and throughout my 50 years of priestly ministry has been, above all, to help God’s people appreciate that all of the baptized are the Church, the living presence and Body of Jesus in the world today. All of the baptized are called to grow deeper in the love of Jesus and to actively share Jesus’ love with others in accordance with the gifts and talents that God has given them.

Jesus calls all of us, through Baptism and Confirmation, to mission. We are all called to become actively engaged in our parish and beyond our parish through prayer, word, and action in order to make our world a better place.

I cherish great memories of ministry during my first 11½ years in two different parishes. My first parish had 2,850 families, an 18-classroom school, 3,000 young people in grades 1-12 religious education, and a 400-bed active emergency hospital for which I was also responsible. The Second Vatican Council ended after my first full year of priestly ministry, and we had the exciting privilege of implementing the powerful teachings of the Council.

I loved visiting the classrooms in our school each week and the classrooms in the eight schools where our young people attended religious programs. I thoroughly enjoyed our many adult faith formation sessions where we shared the new theological and pastoral teachings of the Council, and together implemented the Parish Pastoral Council and Commissions and the very welcome liturgical changes: Mass in the vernacular The Messenger: Page 26

and facing the people, reception of Holy Communion under both species, implementation of ministries of reader, extraordinary distributors of Holy Communion, ministers of welcome, greater participation in the sung and recited responses, weekly visitation and Holy Communion for the sick, and peace and social justice outreach.

It was an enormous privilege to enter so deeply into the lives of individuals and families at times of joy preparing and celebrating Baptisms (17 on every Sunday was not unusual), First Confessions, First Communions, Confirmations, marriages, and in moments of sadness – comforting the sick, dying, and those who mourned the death of a loved one.

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, we offered leadership in standing up to the challenges of racism. In those days before rampant secularism, the parish was the very heart and center of the people’s lives, young and old.

After my January 27, 1983 ordination as bishop, I was given responsibility for overseeing 80 parishes with 600,000 Catholics in the Northwest region of the Archdiocese of Detroit. It was a joy to confer the fullness of the Holy Spirit upon the young people in those parishes and to work closely with the priests in the seven deaneries in my region.

A most challenging yet rewarding experience was to serve as Director of the September 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II, now St. Pope John Paul II, to Detroit. While I had already visited with him at the Vatican on several occasions, the Detroit visit was an opportunity to spend considerable time with him during the speaking and liturgical events in seven separate locations.

I love changes, challenges, and surprises. The most dramatic in my life came when the Papal Nuncio called me on August 19, 1992 at seven in the morning. In his broken English, he told me that the Holy Father would like me to serve as bishop in the Diocese of Gary.

I believe deep in my heart that we should always do what the Church asks us to do, and thus I immediately said yes, I will accept. When I asked the Papal Nuncio “When shall I go?” he said it would be best if you would go today because the current bishop, Bishop Norbert F. Gaughan, has been disabled with a series of strokes.

I asked, “What does this mean,” and he responded, “Just go be the bishop.” I began ministry in the Diocese of Gary that day.

I am likewise grateful to all who serve on parish and diocesan consultative bodies such as Parish and Diocesan Pastoral Councils, Commissions, Personnel Boards, Councils of Priests and Deacons, the Diocesan Finance Council, the Diocesan Stewardship Commission, Catholic Charities’ Board and many others. I particularly commend those who have worked very hard to strengthen catechesis at the high school and young adult level.

All together we are the Church. The Church in the Diocese of Gary has so much vitality because of all of you who take your Baptism and discipleship very seriously. Thank you so very much.

What does the future hold? I submitted my letter of resignation to Pope Francis just prior to my 75th birthday on November 9th as required by Canon Law. I did so with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve God’s priestly people as priest and bishop. When the consultation process has been completed, Pope Francis will name the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Gary.

I believe changes in episcopal leadership and changes of pastors are a very good thing. It reminds us that the Church is God’s and we have been called to be stewards for a period of time. God will see fit to appoint another shepherd who will have a different set of gifts and talents that God will use for His purpose.

I plan to place myself at the disposition of the new bishop and the needs of the parishes. I trust that through them, Jesus will reveal how I am to continue

Much of our lives are spent giving to others. We give money to our churches and the charities we have some sort of passion for. We give gifts and cards on birthdays and holidays. We give time to our loved ones. We give because the simple act of letting someone know we are thinking about them is powerful enough to make a change, whether that change effects a wide number of individuals or simply brings a smile to the face of one.

Merriam Webster defines power as “the ability to act or produce an effect.�

By giving our time, money, and love to those who need it we are generating an outcome that will, in some way, change the lives of others. Even the smallest gift can be powerful enough to make a big change.

If you have ever stepped foot on our campus at 10th and Wabash, you know that Marquette is not an ordinary high school. You can feel an atmosphere buzzing with tradition, pride, and excellence as students travel between the Scholl Center, the academic building, and the Marquette Mansion going to classes, lunch, meetings, practice, internships, and whatever else they are involved in at Marquette. The passion and pride these students exhibit in every sector of their lives at Marquette, both before and after they graduate, accurately creates the perception that we are a family – something you will find at no other school.

Marquette receives many different gifts every single day. Gifts of time from our volunteers, monetary gifts from our donors, and the gift of support and love from the entire Marquette family. Summa Cum Laude Allison Day Back is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Erik Back of LaPorte, Indiana. Allie attended St. John Lutheran School in LaPorte. She is a member of the volleyball and basketball teams and National Honor Society. She plays volleyball with both the Dunes and Evolution volleyball clubs. She is a student ambassador, a peer minister, a peer tutor and school photographer.

Allie’s service work is involved with Teen Court, Dunebrook, Tour de LaPorte, the LaPorte Library, St. John’s Vacation Bible School, St. John’s Lily Event, National Relief Network and LaPorte Hospital. Allie will attend Concordia University.

Taylor Rose Bowen is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Bowen of Michiana Shores, Indiana.

Taylor attended Notre Dame School in Michigan City. She is a member of the tennis team, cheer squad, National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Student Government, the Global Fellowship, Adventure Club and Theatre Club. Taylor is a student ambassador and peer minister.

Her service work has involved youth tennis camps, peer ministry and a mission trip to Henryville for relief work. Taylor is a Lilly Scholarship Finalist and the recipient of the Del Lonzo Scholarship.

Taylor will attend Butler University and study Art+Design and Digital Media Production.

Mr. Richard ‘39 & Mrs. Louise Quartuch ‘46 Scholl

Louise and Richard Scholl did not know each other when they attended St. Mary’s High School (n/k/a Marquette Catholic High School) alongside their siblings and cousins. However, the bond of their Catholic education and faith led them to meet years later after Mass at St. Mary’s Church. The wind had taken Louise’s hat and Richard gallantly made the effort to retrieve it! A friendship was kindled and they subsequently married at that same church where they first met.

Richard and Louise have always believed that “to those who much is given, much is expected,” and they have had a burning passion to use their financial resources in such a manner that would enable a larger number of the Michigan City community to benefit from the academic and athletic facilities created by their leadership gifts.

Their gifts to Marquette Catholic High School have had uncomparable benefits to past, current, and future Blazers as well as the entire community surrounding Marquette. Though Mr. Scholl has passed away, Mrs. Scholl continues to generously support MQT year after year.

Mr. Tom & Mrs. Julie Barry ’76 Burke

Tom and Julie Burke always wanted to try different things.

As their four children became more independent, the two found themselves ‘playing the back nine’, but they were not quite ready for life after retirement. Tom was led to consider teaching after participating in volunteer work and returning to graduate school with the Catholic Theological Union, where he is currently enrolled and working toward an M.A. in Theology.

Tom and Julie believe that a high school functions as one of the pillars of a community and that Marquette provides lessons for all those little things that our world overlooks, like humility and a Christian work ethic.

Their gifts to Marquette, monetary and otherwise, have been a huge asset to our ongoing programs and future plans.

Mr. John ’72 & Mrs. Nancy Repenn ‘72 Nasser John Nasser is an employee for Amgen, a company that takes

part in Political Action Committee. Political Action Committee (PAC) is a political fund comprised of voluntary contributions from individuals within an organization who join together to participate in the election process. PACs have existed since the 1970s, when Congress, reacting to campaign finance abuses, created these entities as an alternative and more transparent means of participation. Today, PACs are the most highly regulated part of the political process and must comply with strict contribution limits and reporting requirements.

John and his wife Nancy have great memories of their years at Marquette. It’s where they met and starting dating and the education they received was “excellent.” The teachers cared and took the extra time if you needed some help or had a question. Their class size (83), was small enough that they knew everyone. They describe Marquette as “a special island in a sea of mediocre education options” and are so glad that their parents made the sacrifices they did back then, so that the two of them could benefit from the Marquette experience.

The Student Body

Creating a culture of giving with the current students of Marquette is something new.

We are fortunate to have a group of students who are generous in every way and who have welcomed the understanding of the true power of giving. By teaching our current students that every little bit counts, we are planting within them knowledge that will encourage them to give what they can as they continue on to be successful people in this world. It will keep them connected to this wonderful place and to each other as the Marquette network keeps growing, and it will inspire them to be generous in all walks of life.

This past year, the student body raised over $2,500 in a competition between the classes called “Jar Wars,” thus naming the Marquette student body as a major donor to the school.

For John ‘71 and Julie Scholl ‘73 Wojcik, maintaining connection with Marquette Catholic High School is all about continuing a legacy and giving back in gratitude. Remembering the advantage they had in pursuing higher education because of their firm foundation and formation at Marquette, they knew that the academic preparation would be invaluable for their children and continued the generational trend by sending them to Marquette.

Developing a sense of community, a dedication to prayer and worship, and commitment to a life of service underlies all of what is taught at Marquette Catholic High School. The 2013-2014 school year was a very exciting one at Marquette Catholic High School. Now that I have been here for a year, there is one specific word that stands out in my mind when I think about the educational experience offered here: opportunity.

There are many unique opportunities afforded to students at Marquette.

From our growing Global Studies Program, to our new Internship Program, to college credit courses offered, to the opportunities to study abroad, to becoming a peer minister, to all of the sports and clubs available to students - the opportunities to get involved are endless. There is something for every student, and the list keeps growing every single day.

All these opportunities that are in place are completely necessary for the students to grow and succeed. The 100% college acceptance rate, rising test scores, and naming of Marquette as a 4-star school are only a few of the qualifications that prove this school continues to unfailingly stay true to her mission of Catholic learning that ensures both faith formation and college-readiness.

The Annual Fund is critical to guaranteeing that we are able to continue providing the highest level of education for each and every student. When you contribute to the school annually, we are able to meet the expenses of the opportunities needed to support an inclusive educational experience not fully covered by tuition.

For this upcoming academic year, tuition is $7,450 with no additional fees.

The ability to educate students at this cost, which is lower than any other private school in this area, is a result of well thought out planning and decision making.

The goal for this year’s Annual Fund is $100,000. Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund have a direct impact on everything we do, including helping close the $325,945 gap between the cost of tuition and the cost to educate MQT students.

The support I am asking for is critical to both our budget and to ensuring that we can continue to afford unique opportunities to a group of bright, smiling students.
