Mayor’s message Welcome to the Summer edition of Maroondah in focus and my first as the newly elected Mayor of Maroondah for 2019/20. This is my first term as Mayor of Maroondah, and with the support of our new Deputy Mayor, Councillor Marijke Graham, and my fellow Councillors, I look forward to serving the Maroondah community during 2020. As this is our Summer edition, there’s plenty of news and information on activities to enjoy, along with some key health and safety messaging when it comes to being prepared for days of extreme heat, as well as pool safety. This issue also provides updates on the many projects, services and initiatives that Council is delivering. Major infrastructure projects are progressing well, with plenty of onsite activity happening at HE Parker sporting pavilion, and plans underway for the $3.25 million redevelopment at Proclamation Park sporting pavilion in 2020. We also have a number of family-friendly community events happening over the next few months. I hope to see as many of our community as possible at our annual Australia Day celebrations at Ringwood Lake Park on Sunday 26 January 2020. Not only is this an enjoyable, free event for the whole family, but also a symbolic day for those receiving Australian
citizenship and those honoured in our Maroondah Australia Day awards. During February and March, we have three free community events. These are a wonderful way to celebrate what’s great about the City of Maroondah, by gathering your friends and family together and enjoying the warmer weather at one of our idyllic parks and reserves. More information on these events can be found on page 15. Come along, enjoy the summer weather and take the opportunity to meet your local ward Councillors. As Mayor, my goal is to make sure our residents and businesses are connected with, and informed about, the work we are doing on their behalf, both in the immediate community and beyond. This also includes seeking feedback on a range of activities and projects, and I encourage you to join in a conversation with us, whether that be through our online discussions and surveys, sending an email, following us on Facebook, or mailing us a letter. And finally, on behalf of my fellow Councillors, I would like to wish all our residents, their friends and family, a happy, safe and enjoyable festive season.

International Women’s Day Breakfast - save the date! International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March, with the theme for 2020 being – let’s all be #EachforEqual Council is once again hosting our Maroondah International Women’s Day Breakfast on Thursday 5 March, from 7.15am to 9am, at Karralyka. The event celebrates the contribution women make to workplaces, families and communities and is a great opportunity to get a group of friends or family members together in a positive, supportive and celebratory environment. Tickets cost $22 per person. Bookings are essential and close on Friday 21 February 2020, unless booked out. Bookings and payments are accepted at Council’s service centres or via our website. The best in business has been celebrated as part of the 2019 Maroondah Business Excellence Awards. Hosted by Council, the awards highlight the achievements of leading Maroondah businesses across key industry sectors. They also provide an opportunity for businesses of all sizes and type to be recognised for their efforts, commitment and success. The awards were met with enthusiasm by the business community. Over 150 businesses were nominated for the awards, with 49 participating in the rigorous assessment process. A total of 32 businesses were then shortlisted as finalists across five award categories.

The Babes Project took out the prestigious Maroondah Business of the Year title during a gala evening held at Karralyka on 30 October. The not-forprofit organisation helps women who are facing crisis pregnancy by providing perinatal, antenatal and parenting information, education and support.

Celebrate Australia Day with us! Come and celebrate the Australian spirit with us on Sunday 26 January at Ringwood Lake Park. The annual event is an opportunity for the community to come together to enjoy free family-friendly activities including Paw Patrol, Animals of the Magical Mountain and children’s performer Bethany Fisher, as well as free rides and face painting. The Maroondah Australia Day award recipients will also be announced, and you can watch our newest community members take the pledge or oath to become Australian citizens. Fay Lawn named first recipient of the Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award Long-serving volunteer Fay Lawn has been announced as this year’s recipient of the inaugural Bill Wilkins Volunteer Award. Fay was presented with the prestigious volunteer service award at Council’s Volunteer Recognition Function ceremony held on Thursday 5 December at Karralyka. Fay was chosen from a field of 13 candidates in recognition of her 49 years of volunteering with Meals on Wheels; 39 years with Maroondah Hospital, and as a spiritual care
volunteer supporting people through rehabilitation. Named in honour of community stalwart Bill Wilkins, the award will be presented annually in honour of those volunteers who inspire and embody the spirit of volunteerism through their exemplary contribution to the community.
In 1994, Bill Wilkins became an Honorary Freeman of the City – the highest honour a Council can bestow upon an individual. He was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and in 2013 for his services to the City of Maroondah, which have spanned an incredible 75 years.
A huge ‘thank you’ to our wonderful volunteers Maroondah’s volunteers come from all walks of life, backgrounds, experiences and age groups, yet they share a common goal – to make a difference to the lives of others. Council recently acknowledged our 400 volunteers who help to deliver a range of services and programs to the Maroondah community during our annual Volunteer Recognition Function held at Karralyka.

This event was celebrated on International Volunteers Day (5 December), and is one of the many ways we thank them for their dedication and commitment during the year. Special milestone awards were presented to those who have volunteered with Council for 10 years, right through to 45 years, these 37 volunteers have clocked up an incredible 735 years of volunteering with Council.
Whether it’s delivering a meal, getting people out and about who might otherwise be feeling isolated, working with young people, or helping to care for our bushland reserves, Maroondah volunteers provide their service for no reward other than knowing they are helping someone and contributing to the greater good of the community. Walking Football and Cricket a game-changer for senior residents Older people are embracing a more active lifestyle, by joining in a range of modified team sports which cater for their skills and abilities. The walking football and cricket programs, which help senior Maroondah residents stay physically and socially active, have been a huge success.

Targeted at participants aged over 50, both programs are aimed at improving the physical health and mental wellbeing of older men and women, providing them with the opportunity to socialise while experiencing the benefits of ongoing physical activity. For some, it is an opportunity to re-engage in a sport they once played or who perhaps stopped due to injury. For others, it’s about learning a new sport and meeting new people. Both sports use different equipment and rules, and involves no running or tackling.
Both programs are offered as part of Council’s Active and Healthy Ageing Initiative, which seeks to promote positive healthy ageing for older people.
Each sport also provides the opportunity to support and maintain mobility skills through walking, stopping, turning and transferring weight – to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
The Walking Football and Walking Cricket season was launched in partnership with U3A Croydon, Melbourne City Football Club, Cricket Victoria and Knox City Council.
Both programs offer weekly sessions throughout the year. Sessions are free for U3A members, for all other participants it is $5 for Walking Cricket and $2 for Walking Soccer. For more, visit Council’s website or call 1300 88 22 33.
Good Food For Me – free nutritional program for seniors 65 and over
A Maroondah-first pilot program Good Food For Me is helping to teach older residents important yet simple, practical ways on how to live with better health through better nutrition. The pilot program was launched following the success of the Good Food For Me seminar held earlier in the year.
Topics included: Are convenience foods ok for me to eat? What are the best foods to eat as I get older? How can I reduce food waste and save money? Open to residents aged 65 and over, the three-week program provides an introduction to the dietary needs of older people, while learning how to prepare everyday meals easily, independently and on a budget. Participants will also learn how to read nutrition labels and make wise food choices to ensure their cupboards are well-stocked with healthy foods.
Buried in Treasures: program helping those living with hoarding behaviour Buried Treasures, an award-winning Council program, offers support to Maroondah residents affected by hoarding behaviour. The program is based on a prescribed program developed in the USA, which Council has adapted to support people with hoarding and compulsive-acquiring behaviours to make a change. The program offers participants practical strategies, in a non-judgemental environment, to make the appropriate positive changes to their home environment. Participants attend 16 weekly sessions which cover topics including awareness, understanding, discarding and maintaining success.
It is estimated one in 20 Australians are afflicted by hoarding behaviour. Hoarding is a complex mental health issue and it can often be hard for individuals affected or their families to find the help they need. The problem can be socially isolating, damaging to property and relationships, and a potential fire, health and safety risk. The Buried in Treasures program runs across a 16-week period, starting on Tuesday 11 February.
The program will be held again in February 2020 and is funded by the Commonwealth Home Support Program and is free to those registered and referred through My Aged Care. To find out more visit Council’s website.

Council supports the health and wellbeing of Maroondah’s senior residents with a range of programs and services that enables them to maintain their independence and stay connected.
Proclamation Park sports pavilion A $3.25 million redevelopment will be taking place at Proclamation Park sporting pavilion in 2020. The project will involve the demolition of the existing pavilion and construction of a new two-storey facility, including female change facilities to meet the growing female participate in cricket and baseball. In addition, there will be an accessible public toilet, storage for clubs, and a levelone multipurpose room with kitchen, kiosk and spectator viewing area. Proclamation Park is a popular Maroondah sporting precinct, featuring the recently redeveloped $2.86 million AC Robertson Athletics Track and Tony Lethbridge Pavilion; two baseball diamonds; three ovals; and surrounding bushland. It is also home to the Ringwood Athletic Club, Ringwood Little Athletics Centre, Ringwood Professional Athletic Club, Ringwood Cricket Club, Ringwood Saints Baseball Club, and Proclamation Park Walkers.

Cr Nora Lamont Mobile: 0428 394 581 One of the great things about living in Maroondah is our tree canopy and large areas of open space. Council is doing a lot of work to ensure that these spaces are not only preserved for our future generations, but also that they can continue to provide vital habitat corridors for our native wildlife. A range of species, including koalas, used to frequent Maroondah, but unfortunately it has been a number of years since some native species have been spotted in our municipality. In order to attract native wildlife back to Maroondah we need to maintain and expand a range of habitat elements, and provide the connectivity between spaces that different species need to survive. The actions we take today to maintain our wildlife movement corridors will hopefully result in a range of native wildlife returning for our future generations. We all enjoy unwrapping presents, but unfortunately a lot of waste ends up in landfill that could so easily be recycled, such as wrapping paper, packaging, boxes, disposable plates and more. Recycling is one of the simplest things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment. So, once it’s time to start the post-festive season clean out, please make an effort to sort and then recycle all appropriate material. Sorting is essential. It is vital that you only place appropriate items in your recycling bin. Non-recyclable material, especially plastic bags, can block machinery and contaminate recyclable material. Plus broken glass poses a hazard for those processing the material. It’s not just wrapping and packaging that can be recycled, live Christmas trees can be cut into small pieces and placed into the green waste bin. Council prides itself on providing interesting, engaging and thoughtprovoking offerings to our community across a range of artistic mediums. Having the opportunity to work with members of the Maroondah Arts Advisory Committee over the past 18 months, I have seen first hand the passion and talent we have within our community. At the moment, we have some of Australia’s most highly acclaimed artists in the R & M McGivern Prize exhibition. You can see the finalists on exhibition in Artspace at Realm and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery until February 1. In January the new season of events and activities from the 2020 Ringwood Arts Precinct Calendar kicks off, including a range of exhibitions, incubators, music performances and activations. R & M McGivern Art Prize 2019 The prestigious R & M McGivern Prize has returned this year with emerging and established artists from across Australia submitting artwork based on the theme of ‘Anthropocene’. This year’s art prize has attracted a record 450 entries, with 45 artists shortlisted for the prestigious title and prize money. The $25,000 prize is awarded every three years for an outstanding, original art work. This year’s winning artwork is Nadine Christensen’s, Hang in there, an acrylic on sustainable farmed hoop pine with cedar stretcher. The winner was announced at the opening of the finalists’ exhibition on Thursday 28 November. The exhibition shares conceptual, abstract and literal interpretations based on the theme of human habitation and its impact on the environment. The winning painting becomes a valued addition to the Maroondah City Council Art Collection – a significant collection comprising over 400 works of art. The winning piece, along with shortlisted works, are now on display in ArtSpace at Realm and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery until 1 February 2020. The prestigious art prize was established at the bequest of the late Muriel Evelyn McGivern as a legacy to her support of the arts in Maroondah.
Visitors to the exhibition can also vote for the People’s Choice Award, valued at $1000, with the winner to be announced on Friday 31 January.

Thinking outside the box Have you spotted our new public artworks on your trip through Ringwood? To support the R & M McGivern exhibition, Council has commissioned the Anthropocene Art Trail to transform
six traffic signal boxes in the Ringwood arts precinct into works of art. Artists were invited to submit photographic and digital artworks celebrating the theme ‘Anthropocene’ to be displayed on signal boxes.
It’s all part of a signal box art project that will see more Maroondah signal boxes become digital artworks. So keep your eye out for more great signal box art in 2020!
Pool and spa owners reminded to meet new safety laws Enjoying the water is a great Australian pastime, but owning or building a pool comes with strict safety responsibilities and legal requirements.
The implementation period will require owners of existing swimming pools and spas to take action by 1 June 2020. In addition, owners will be required to provide certification to Council every four years from a registered building surveyor or registered building inspector, certifying that their pool or spa safety barriers comply with the standard applicable at the time of their installation.
Once registered with Council, you will receive further information in relation to the certification and key dates. While there will be stricter laws on managing pool and spa compliance, the requirement to have safety barriers hasn’t changed. You are already expected to have safety barriers in place. These legal obligations apply to all swimming pools and spas including above-ground and inflatable pools, bathing, wading and portable pools, hot tubs and spas that are capable of holding more than 300mm of water. Council will maintain the register of swimming pools and spas within the
municipality through owner registrations, existing Council records and aerial photography to ensure the database is up-to-date. You can check if your pool or spa barriers are compliant using the Victorian Building Authority’s self-assessment checklists at vba.vic.gov.au They reflect the standards and regulations that are applied to your pool or spa depending on your installation date. From 1 December 2019, property owners and landlords, of houses, motels, hotels and apartment buildings, are required to register their pool or spa with Council as part of tough new laws introduced by the Victorian Government.

Maroondah Golf Strategic Review
Maroondah’s Liveability and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-2031
Consultation on stage two of the Maroondah Golf Strategic Review has recently closed.
The current Maroondah Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2017-2021 is due to conclude in 2021 and will be replaced by the new Maroondah Liveability and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-2031.
Council is undertaking the review to ensure that golf in Maroondah is sustainable in the future and that we can continue to meet the changing needs and interests of our community. To date the review has included an analysis of sports trends, golf participation rates, golf industry trends and golf facility innovation as well as two rounds of community consultation with local residents, golfers, and the broader community. Council is now assessing the latest community feedback on the proposed key elements and will present the findings back to the community in early 2020. The strategy will provide a longer-term direction and create an holistic strategy covering key priorities to improve the health and wellbeing of Maroondah residents. We are inviting the community to be part of the conversation. You can share your thoughts and ideas with us by completing our online survey or by sending in written feedback, focusing on eight key topics – celebrating diversity; community learning; healthy lifestyle; liveable neighbourhoods; safe communities; social inclusion; social influences and sustainable environment. Council is also completing research on various social issues to ensure we develop an integrated action plan as part of the strategy.

The results of the research and community consultation will be used to determine where Council should focus its liveability and wellbeing efforts. Draft Eastfield Park Enhancement Plan Over the past six months, Council has analysed extensive community feedback to determine common themes, ideas and opportunities for the enhancement of Eastfield Park.
Council is undertaking a review of golf in Maroondah to ensure we can meet future needs.
The five proposed key elements were supported by the user groups of Eastfield Park and the wider community. The five key elements are: improvements to bushland and vegetation areas; enhanced football and cricket facilities; enhanced light harness and horse and pony
facilities; enhanced open space areas and enhanced accessibility. Council is now progressing with the development of a revised enhancement plan, which will be presented to the community for comment in early 2020. Thank you to residents who attended our drop-in consultation sessions and shared their views online on the four key elements being considered for Maroondah’s premier sporting precinct, Jubilee Park. This feedback will now be used to refine the key elements and to develop a Draft Jubilee Park Enhancement Plan for the
sporting precinct. The four key elements include enhancements to bushland, sporting facilities, open space and accessibility. This will help us to establish a clearer direction and vision for Jubilee Park, as well as to identify improvement works that would take place over the short, medium and long term.

Collection guidelines • Place the correct bins out by 6am and bring them in within 24 hours of collection. • Check your bin weight. If you can’t easily wheel your bin to the kerb, or it weighs more than 40kg, then it’s probably too heavy to be collected. • Your bin lid must be fully closed. Don’t overfill your bin as extra bags of rubbish will not be collected and you will be required to pick up any litter created due to the lid not being closed.

Croydon Community Precinct vision comes to life We have received positive feedback for the draft Masterplan for the future enhancement of the Croydon Community Precinct during the most recent community engagement period. Initial preparation for a masterplan commenced over 12 months ago and more recently has included consultation with existing precinct user groups; refining the shared community vision for the precinct; and exploring key elements, including enhanced community wellbeing facilities; a family and children’s hub and sport and recreation hub. The feedback helped to shape the draft Masterplan for the precinct that aims to bring together a range of community services, programs and activities for people of all ages and abilities. The draft Masterplan also focuses on enhanced open spaces and better connectivity between the precinct, recreational hubs, Main Street, Croydon Town Square and public transport services. To bring the draft Masterplan to life and help the community picture what it may look like, we created a visual fly through of the precinct as well as a 3D model. Both of these highlight the proposed key elements for the precinct, including three community hubs, improved pedestrian linkages, increased areas of open space and future development site opportunities. Based on the feedback from the community Council will now be undertaking further detailed design works, which will include how best to retain and incorporate heritage elements. Further opportunities will be available for community input and feedback into the draft Masterplan during 2020. Smoother journey for motorists travelling through Maroondah Highway intersection It’s good news for commuters with the major redevelopment of the Maroondah Highway, Dorset Road, Exeter Road and Bellara Drive intersection now complete. Managed by VicRoads, the $8 million project, funded by the Federal Government, is designed to reduce congestion and travel times through this busy intersection, which the RACV found was the second worst for evening peak travel times in Melbourne. Approximately 33,000 motorists travel along Maroondah Highway each day, with six per cent of those being heavy vehicles. If you haven’t visited the area since the works have been completed, we encourage you to head back and support the local businesses. The upgrade means there is now better accessibility to businesses and shops in the precinct.

Cr Tasa Damante Mobile: 0438 704 819 I’m happy to see works are continuing on the upgrade of Lincoln Road, Croydon. Council received funding from the Federal Roads to Recovery program to reconstruct and upgrade Lincoln Road, between Dorset Road and Hull Road. The works are being undertaken in two stages, with Stage 1, between Hull Road and Dornoch Court, already complete. Stage 2 of the project will begin in early 2020 and will make a huge difference for the community. It will improve the road condition as well as provide new bike lanes and footpaths, new street lighting, and improvements to the service road access points. A big focus of the project is to protect existing vegetation areas as well as allowing for new landscaping areas and water sensitive urban design along the road. The Lincoln Road reserve has more than 4500 trees, with more than 50 different species, so it is important that we protect and enhance the spaces. Cr Marijke Graham, Deputy Mayor Mobile: 0418 109 015 Local businesses will soon be able to take steps to be more environmentally sustainable, with Council in the process of establishing an Environmental Upgrade Agreement (EUA) program. The initiative will help Maroondah businesses access funding for building works to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and cut water use. To be launched early in 2020, the program involves businesses working with a financial institution and Council to enter into the EUA, which means they can pay for the improvement works through their rates. This is a win/win for businesses and the environment, as it makes upgrading to sustainable options more affordable, and has the opportunity to create more local jobs and ongoing cost savings for tenants and business owners. Maroondah Carols and the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Ringwood Town Square attracted thousands of community members. Tarralla Creek restoration has flow-on effect Tarralla Creek, home of the spotted marsh frog and other fauna and flora, will be recreated as part of a partnership project led by Melbourne Water, known as Reimagining Tarralla Creek. A two-kilometre section of the waterway (from Dorset Road to Eastfield Road, Croydon) will be ‘daylighted’ as part of plans to restore the creek to a more natural state, improving the corridor’s habitat creation and biodiversity. Reimagining Tarralla Creek is a collaborative project between the community, Melbourne Water and Council that will also see the surrounding natural environment improved to create an accessible open space that has better visual amenity and enables better community connections.
‘Spotted Marsh Frog’ leaps into Croydon Spotted Marsh Frog, by acclaimed artist Ian Bracegirdle, is an eye-catching new public artwork welcoming visitors to Town Park, Croydon. The larger-than-life likeness of the local amphibian, weighing over 300 kilograms, was hand-cast from fibre-reinforced cement, steel and copper. It captures the Spotted Marsh Frog, a species found in the nearby Tarralla Creek Wetlands, as it perches on reeds. As well as being a dramatic and appealing art piece, the main sculpture and two baby frogs is a creative and engaging reminder of the importance of our urban wildlife habitat.

Maroondah Leisure’s indoor facilities provide allweather enjoyment and exercise for youngsters – and the young at heart – allowing them to make friends while having fun in a supervised environment.
The Rings School holiday sports at The Rings are perfect for your little sports star. Not only can they play basketball, they can also test their skills in soccer. The multisports holiday program has tailored sessions suited to children aged 5 to 12 years. Bookings for the January School Holiday Program will be available from mid December.
Maroondah Nets In January, Maroondah Nets will offer netball programs to keep your child’s skills progressing between terms. The Netball School Holiday Program provides your child with the opportunity to work with high-level coaches, to improve strength, speed, agility and balance through skills sessions and match play. This program is suitable for children of all abilities, from ages 5 to 12. Netball Advance, for players aged 11 to 14 years, is a clinic that gives young, enthusiastic netballers the chance to experience an advanced training session. You can even purchase a season pass, which entitles you to unlimited access to the facility as well as low-impact aqua aerobics classes on Thursdays and Saturdays. Aquahub aquatics closed for maintenance Aquahub is improving it’s aquatic facilities by refurbishing the pools and sauna to ensure continued enjoyment for years to come. Due to the extent of the works the aquatic facilities at Aquahub will be closed from Monday 16 December 2019 to Sunday 26 January 2020. Alternate aquatic facilities during this time can be enjoyed at Croydon Memorial Pool or Aquanation. The Aquahub gym, group fitness studios and stadium will remain open and unaffected during this time.

Keep your cool this summer with vital safety tips Prepare a fire plan
Never leave children or pets unattended in cars Children, as well as pets, must never be left unattended in a car, especially on hot days. In Victoria, it is against the law to leave a child unattended in a car. Temperatures inside a car can double within minutes, putting children and animals at severe risk of heat stroke, and can even be fatal. Remember to always keep car keys on you to avoid the risk of children accidentally locking themselves inside the car.
As we head into the bushfire season, now is the time to make sure that you and your property are ‘fire ready’. Preparing a fire plan will ensure that you are prepared in the event of a bushfire or grass fire. Your plan should outline what you need to do in the lead up and during a bushfire season, as well as your backup plan. Tell your friends and family what you plan to do in the case of a bushfire. And don’t forget about your animals or pets. The CFA website – www.cfa.vic.gov.au – is a fantastic resource and offers advice on preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan.
Council has an official heatwave plan that is activated during days of extreme heat. This may mean that some Council services or appointments could be cancelled, and should this occur, clients will be notified.
For pool and spa owners, new laws introduced by the Victorian Government require mandatory registration of all swimming pools and spas. It is also a requirement that pool/spa fences and gates meet regulations and are in proper working order. Also check that there aren’t any items nearby that might be used to climb over the fence or gate. Are you compliant? For more on safety barriers and your responsibilities, visit Council’s website.
It is important for residents to ensure their property is protected well before a storm occurs. This includes developing a home or business emergency plan and assembling an emergency kit (including a torch, battery-operated radio and list of emergency numbers). You should also prepare your home or business site to reduce incidents and ensure you have adequate insurance. Site preparation may include cleaning gutters, downpipes and drains, trimming overhanging branches, repairing the roof and securing outdoor furniture. Unfortunately, there are people in our community who are more prone to being impacted by the heat, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, babies and young children, people aged 65 and over, and people who have a serious medical condition.
Play it safe around water
Whether it is a pool, river, creek or spa, it is important that you stay alert and keep a close eye on friends and family when around water. Teaching children water safety skills and enrolling them in swimming lessons are a vital part of water safety.
Maroondah is a storm-prone area, experiencing severe storm events on a regular basis, often resulting in property damage, flooding and personal injury.
With summer here, it’s important that you are prepared for days of extreme heat.
Heat exhaustion, and the potentially fatal heat stroke, occurs when the body is unable to cool itself properly. Tips to staying cool on days of extreme heat include: drinking plenty of water, staying out of the sun, closing curtains and blinds, looking after others including pets (who should be kept indoors and well hydrated), and avoid going out or exercising.
This highlights the importance of being safe around water, no matter your age or swimming ability.

And to protect against damage from regular house fires, make sure your smoke alarm is working properly and check those batteries!

While it may be tempting to leave your dog or cat inside the car while running a quick errand, they can quickly succumb to the effects of heatstroke. Even if windows are wound down or the car is in the shade, pets can still overheat.

Keeping pets safe during fireworks and thunderstorms Missing a pet during the festive season can quickly put a dampener on celebrations, so double check the security of your yard and ensure their microchip details and council registration details are up to date. To avoid animals becoming fearful during times of loud noises like thunderstorms and fireworks, make sure you provide access to a safe place where your pet may feel more at ease. And remember never to punish your pet for exhibiting this behaviour during times of stress. It is also important that you ensure your pets are well cared for if you are planning to head away for the holiday season. Animals can become distressed during their owner’s absence and can often escape or cause noise nuisance to neighbours. It is recommended that owners have someone stay with your animals or have them cared for in a boarding kennel if you are away. Pet registration renewals due in April Did you know that there are over 18,000 registered cats and dogs in Maroondah? Maroondah pet owners are reminded that animal registration renewal notices will arrive in the mail during March, for payment due by Friday 10 April 2020. If you are registering your pet for the first time, they must be microchipped before you can complete the registration process. If your pet has passed away or moved to a different Council area, please let us know so we can update our records. Registration is an important part of responsible pet ownership and helps keep track of your much-loved pet. All dogs and cats must be registered by three months of age, as well as microchipped. Microchipping provides an extra level of protection should your pet’s collar become detached and greatly improves the chances of your pet being returned to you if they become lost.
It is also a requirement that your pet wears its Council-issued registration tag at all times. The tags are lifelong and are therefore not replaced when you renew your registration. Leaving messes isn’t just unsightly, it’s unsanitary Dog owners are encouraged to show courtesy for their fellow community members by picking up after their pet. Dog droppings contain harmful nutrients and bacteria, and this can end up in our local waterways via the stormwater system. Please remember to take a bag with you when you take the dog for a walk.

Book online for immunisation sessions 2020 calendar now available Our immunisation session dates for 2020 are now available. To attend a session, book via Council’s website for a date and time that is most suitable for you. Council’s immunisation team provides free immunisation service for babies, children and adults, based on the National Immunisation Program (NIP), with regular public immunisation sessions held at various locations across Maroondah. A reminder to parents, your child’s immunisations need to be kept up-todate if you intend to enrol them in any early childhood education or care service.
Early childhood or child care services are required to obtain immunisation records under the Victorian Government’s ‘No Jab, No Play’ legislation. This aims to improve vaccination rates and reduce the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. Families in Maroondah can access vaccines at no cost to protect babies and children against infectious diseases during their vulnerable years of life. Also, parents can feel confident of a safe and effective immunisation service knowing that Council is accredited in compliance with AS/NZS ISO 9001 Quality Standards. Council’s highly experienced immunisation team also offers a school-

Parenting information sessions: supporting families and carers in Maroondah Parents, grandparents and carers in Maroondah are welcome to attend any of Council’s parenting information sessions, designed to support families in their parenting journeys with children and young people.
Families with children looking to enrol in kindergarten in 2021, or unsure of the process, are encouraged to attend our free Maroondah 2020 Kinder Expo on Thursday, 5 March 2020 at Karralyka, from 6pm to 8.30pm. The expo is timed to work in with kindergarten enrolments for 2021, which open on Friday 1 March 2020.
This event puts the spotlight on the preschool years, which is a time of enormous growth and development. Families can visit stallholders, speak to educators from local kindergartens to learn about the enrolment process. Parenting information sessions are offered to families in Maroondah throughout the year, with everything from free advice, professional guest speakers, and information from a host of local service providers. Details for the 2020 program will be released early in the new year.

$4.25 million revitalisation of HE Parker sporting pavilion underway The redevelopment of HE Parker sporting pavilion in Heathmont is underway with the former 1960s clubrooms demolished and earthworks completed onsite. At the same time the new pavilion is being pre-fabricated off site, with the ground floor sections to be delivered and craned into place during December and the first floor scheduled to be delivered and installed in February 2020. The double-storey facility will be home to four female-friendly change rooms, to cater for growing female involvement in grassroots sport, as well as a large multipurpose room and amenities. The facility will focus on inclusiveness and accessibility for all abilities.

I have the privilege to be involved in these ceremonies through the year, which are an important final step that members of our community take to become an Australian citizen. It is a pleasure to attend these ceremonies and witness people from so many different countries embracing Australia, and Maroondah, as their new home. Having taken the oath myself many years ago, it makes me so proud to see Maroondah continue to be such a supportive multicultural society, one that celebrates the richness and diversity of our community. For those who have never attended a Citizenship Ceremony I encourage you to come along to our next event, on Australia Day, at Ringwood Lake Park. This time of year is great to explore our parks and reserves. And what better way to do that than using our extensive network of walking and cycling paths.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their thoughts with us over the past months, as we prepare an enhancement plan for Eastfield Park.
Whether you enjoy walking, running or cycling the shared pathways are vital connections between reserves and major road networks.
Council has been working closely with the user groups and our community to ensure we have a clear understanding of what people love about the reserve and what areas they would like to see enhanced.
Each year we program maintenance and upgrades to our pathways with one of the current projects underway being the reconstruction of the shared pathway along Dandenong Creek. Works are now complete between Laura Reserve and Dorset Road meaning users of the pathway can now enjoy a wide three metre pathway in sections, and there were also minor alterations to the alignment to preserve the surrounding vegetation. Early in 2020 the next stage of the project will begin, with works to reconstruct and widen the shared path from Laura Reserve to Colchester Road. These works are expected to be completed mid-2020.
Discussing ideas and concerns directly with residents is one of the best ways we, as Councillors, can keep our finger on the pulse. I’ve enjoyed speaking with user groups and am pleased that the majority are very supportive of the proposed key elements. We are now preparing a revised draft of the enhancement plan for Eastfield Park, with further community consultation to take place late January and February. I encourage the community to stay engaged with the project on the YourSay Maroondah website, so that we can get the best result for the future of Eastfield Park.

26th Annual Mayoral Art Exhibition 25 April to 20 June 2020 Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery 32 Greenwood Ave, Ringwood Entries are now open for the 26th Annual Mayoral Art Exhibition, a fundraiser in support of the Bone Marrow Donor Institute, Croydon branch. The theme for 2020 is ‘Light and shadow’, with artists encouraged to explore light, shade, chiaroscuro and reflections in their artwork. Artworks of all mediums, including photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics, are eligible to enter. A work will be selected from the exhibition by Mayor Cr Mike Symon to be added to Maroondah City Council’s permanent art collection. Entries close 30 March 2020.

The Victorian State Ballet presents Swan Lake, the world’s most famous traditional classical ballet; and for the youngest of theatre-goers, The Gruffalo’s Child will deliver songs, laughs and scary fun with a magical musical adaptation from the award-winning picture book.
