“Welcome to the Summer 2024 edition of Marlborough Highways News, your twice-yearly publication that brings you our latest company updates, highlighting the fantastic work that our passionate teams deliver across London and beyond.
“While inflation is easing, there’s no denying the current economic climate, which continues to place financial pressures on local authorities and our supply chain partners. At Marlborough, we remain dedicated to excellence and understand the importance of economic responsibility, with our people continually delivering the best value for money on every project. I am proud that our ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability is ensuring that we are not only meeting but exceeding the expectations of the communities we serve.
“The big news this April was the start of our new Highways Term Contract with the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The broadened works programme marks a significant milestone for Marlborough, with the partnership representing our first major expansion into South London. Furthermore, as part of our ambitious growth plans, we have opened a dedicated Royal Greenwich depot, with the strategic move strengthening our market leading position, and allowing us to deliver a truly local service.
“Earlier this year our company Red Star Awards returned, with hundreds of colleagues coming together for a wonderful evening to share in individual and shared achievement. Even bigger and better than our inaugural event, the ceremony took place at the Stock Brook Country Club in Essex, with the celebration reminding us that it’s our people that drives Marlborough’s success. It was a night to remember, and I couldn’t be prouder of all the winners and nominees.
“I am thrilled to announce the launch of our new operational apprenticeships programme, with our investment in new talent vital to Marlborough’s future expansion and diversification. Read on to find out how we are equipping our new recruits with the tools they need to succeed, and how they are supported by the best.
“Finally, I am delighted to share that for the first time we will be exhibiting at the Highways UK exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham this October. Be sure to join us on the Marlborough stand for what will be a fun and productive show, at this incredibly exciting time for our industry.”

Marlborough Highways is delighted to announce that it has secured a comprehensive Highways Term Contract with the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The agreement, which builds upon previous operations delivered by Marlborough in Royal Greenwich, commenced on 1 April 2024, and primarily involves maintenance and improvement works to the roads and footways network.
Budgeted for up to £7 million per annum, the four-year contract has the option to be extended for up to four additional years, with a maximum value of £56 million across the period. The award follows previous Traffic Management operations in Royal Greenwich by Marlborough, which began in 2022.
The new maintenance and improvements operations include works to kerbs, footways and paved areas, road marking services, drainage works, fencing, earthworks, landscaping, and the installation and upkeep of street furniture. The significantly increased scope of services also comprises a provision for emergency call outs, with Marlborough tasked with associated civil engineering works, street cleaning, and more.
The Highways Term Contract was awarded following a competitive bid process, in which Marlborough demonstrated the ability to deliver operational excellence, while providing a strong return on investment. The submission also highlighted Marlborough’s commitment to the strategic vision of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, which seeks to make everyone in Royal Greenwich safer, with vibrant neighbourhoods that are attractive and meet the needs of residents.
Marlborough’s new operations are boroughwide, so as well as works in the historic Town Centre, the remit includes the eclectic areas of North Greenwich, Woolwich, Eltham, Plumstead, and the eastern communities of Deptford. Marlborough is delivering the programme from a new dedicated depot in Royal Greenwich, which is home to a fleet of high-performance plant machinery and specialist highways maintenance vehicles. Marlborough’s Royal Greenwich team are supported by staff from the company’s Brentwood depot, and head office in Chelmsford, Essex, with its accredited in-house training facilities and expert Health & Safety team and Quality and Environment divisions.
As part of efforts by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to foster a fairer and healthier community, Marlborough is conducting a significant series of social value initiatives throughout the Contract period. This includes prioritising resident employment through the creation of local jobs and apprenticeship placements, as well as the provision of training and educational courses delivered by qualified members of staff. Marlborough is also engaging with schools and colleges and supporting community organisations in Royal Greenwich through a range of initiatives
including employee volunteering. The use of local supply chain partners is also important, with Marlborough committed to using locally sourced materials and services wherever possible.
Marlborough and the client share a passion for the environment, with the Royal Borough of Greenwich dedicated to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2030 and Marlborough committed to becoming Net Zero by the end of 2025. In support of these efforts, Marlborough is using eco-friendly building materials and employing pioneering construction methods throughout Royal Greenwich, ensuring projects are delivered sustainably and to the highest quality. Working with an independent consultancy, all schemes are being expertly assessed using a Carbon Footprint Calculator, with electric vehicles, biofuel powered plant, and renewable energy supplies amongst the green technology being deployed across Royal Greenwich. Furthermore, Marlborough is diverting 100% of the Contract construction waste from landfill.

He has previously managed improvement schemes in South London, so has a good understanding of the Royal Greenwich transport network , and recognises the environmental and social needs of the community.
“We are incredibly proud to serve the people of Royal Greenwich, and we are excited to build upon the works we have already delivered in this beautiful and historic area. We understand the unique transport and civic challenges facing this part of London and are committed to partnering with our friends at the Royal Borough of Greenwich to create a safer, greener and more inclusive community for all.”
Marlborough already has a presence in eight other London boroughs, bringing a huge amount of experience and expertise to Royal Greenwich. But the new contract signifies the first major operations for Marlborough in South London, with the expansion forming part of the company’s ambitious growth plans.
The borough map of Greater London to the right depicts the local authorities in which Marlborough is currently delivering major operations. Beyond London, the company also has a significant contractual presence in Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock, Harlow and Rochford, with a wider programme of works across greater Essex and East Anglia.
Marlborough’s new Royal Greenwich base is situated on the VIP Industrial Park in Charlton. Comprising a large warehouse and a twostory office block, the secure site provides easy access to the whole borough. It is the company’s fifth permanent location, with depots elsewhere in Tottenham in Haringey, Codham Hall in Brentwood, and Rochford in Essex. Meanwhile, Marlborough’s landmark head office building, Woolf House, is located in Chelmsford, and boasts state-of-the-art amenities, including industry beating learning and development facilities.

In every edition of Marlborough Highways News, we connect with different Marlborough employees in an interview feature called “Beyond the Road.” In this issue, we explore the meaningful initiatives undertaken by Marlborough’s Social Value team, and the positive affects their efforts have on individuals and communities.
Nick Reading, Head of Performance, Sustainability & Social Value
What do you mean by social value and why is it important to a business like Marlborough?
“Social value measures the positive value organisations create for communities, the economy and our overall society. Following the introduction of the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, the concept has rapidly gained traction and now forms a key part of the Contract procurement process.
“At Marlborough, we have continued to ensure that our projects are delivered on time, to exceptional quality and within our client’s budgets, but we have also embraced the wider deliverables that social value brings, significantly improving the communities we serve.
“We have recently reviewed our company vision, mission, values and strategic objectives. Our social value aspirations are embedded within these key statements as we aspire to be a force for positive change while undertaking our business in a responsible manner.”
Tell us about your team.
“As part of Marlborough’s continued investment in the best people, our Social Value department was established in January 2022. The team grew quickly to include Nula, Anna, and more recently Poppy, who has joined us as an apprentice.
“Our volunteering days, matched funding programme and school engagement sessions have all been established so that colleagues across the business can get involved, and it is with their help and support that we can make a truly meaningful contribution. I am delighted with our achievements to date, and I am proud that the initiatives we deliver are making a real difference in the locations where we work and beyond.”
Nula Krawczynski, Social Value Manager
How does Marlborough engage with local schools?
“Marlborough has developed a comprehensive school engagement programme whereby we work directly with schools, colleges and young people in the communities in which we work, encouraging the wider study of STEM subjects and promoting the breadth of careers available within construction. We do this by going back to school and doing classroom talks and assemblies, and by delivering interactive sessions and workshops.
“The primary purpose of our school engagement programme is to raise awareness amongst young people about the variety
of careers available in the highways sector. We highlight the different entry routes into construction, such as work experience placements and apprenticeship opportunities.
“Through this programme we inspire and educate young people about careers in construction and the built environment, supporting the development of future talent in the industry and addressing the national skills shortage in the sector.
“We have engaged with over 7,000 students.”
“In addition to providing careers advice and employability skills to the next generation of the workforce, we also use our school engagement programme to deliver road safety workshops to younger children; an important subject that is integral to our daily operations.
“Over the past two years we have engaged with over 7,000 students, and we look forward to continuing to grow and develop the programme.”
Anna Wilson, Social Value Administrator
“I am so proud to be a part of Marlborough’s Social Value team and the company’s commitment to making a meaningful difference. The volunteering, school engagements, commitment to local residents, and other efforts made by the team and the business show a profound dedication to enriching the fabric of our communities. I particularly enjoy creating the volunteering opportunities that we provide as they are a tangible opportunity for all employees to contribute positively to the world around us and to strengthen colleague relationships. Through social value, Marlborough is helping to make more enriched, equitable communities and a more compassionate workforce. Thanks to my team, I have the best job in the company!”
Is there any charity work that you are particularly proud of?
“Marlborough is committed to supporting charitable and voluntary sector organisations. One initiative that I feel particularly proud to have led was a professional clothing drive we ran in 2022 in partnership with Smart Works and Suited & Booted – two London based charities that support people into employment by providing them with professional workwear for their job interviews. It was one of the first charitable initiatives I was involved in since joining Marlborough earlier that year, and it was great to see colleagues from across our offices and depots get so involved. In the end we donated over £2,600 worth of clothing to these incredible charities, including suits, shirts, blouses, dresses, and jackets.”
Tell us about your employee volunteering programme?
“Supported volunteering is a great way for people to use the skills they have gained either through their professional careers or through their experiences and interests outside of work.
“Marlborough actively encourages staff to get involved in community volunteering in the areas in which we serve. We have a programme whereby each Marlborough employee is allocated two paid days per year, to spend volunteering for charities or community projects in support of positive societal outcomes. As part of our Armed Forces Covenant status, we also have an extended volunteering leave policy for Reservists to support their military activities.
Poppy Kennedy, Social Value & Sustainability Apprentice
“Social Value to me means not only working in a community, but also working with that community to aid local spaces, charities and schools. In my opinion, social value is a vital part of any business. I am proud to be able to work in the team that makes it happen, and that I get to work for a company that cares about the community.
“Our school engagement initiatives are a particularly rewarding part of my job because I get to see the change in young people while I’m talking to them. My apprenticeship has been a vital part of my job so far and has given me so much knowledge about the way social value works.”
“The Social Value team works closely with our clients, charities, and community organisations within our contracted areas to identify opportunities for our colleagues to get involved in. Uptake in employee volunteering has risen considerably over the last 12 months and feedback has been very positive from those who have taken part.”
Do you measure the impact of Marlborough’s social value initiatives?
“We record and analyse all of our social value initiatives. This ensures we are capturing the community outputs of our activity as a company, while allowing us to accurately report them to our local authority clients. This data has been used to generate an annual report, in which we are able to reflect on the achievements of the past year, analyse what works well and identify any areas for improvement. We also use the data to set ambitious future targets, so that we are continuously improving our social value offering.”

Since 2015, Marlborough and Southend-on Sea City Council have worked in partnership to enhance the local environment and to create a cleaner, greener, safer, and more attractive community for all.
With a dedicated depot serving the area from nearby Rochford, Marlborough has a proven track record in Southend-on Sea, providing traffic management and highways maintenance services and delivering public realm schemes.
Their people are also responsible for the management of seven miles of scenic shoreline, implementing a range of complex coastal engineering projects, with a deep understanding of the area’s unique geography.
““I am incredibly proud of the work that Marlborough has accomplished in partnership with Southendon-Sea City Council these last nine years. We have developed a strong and trusting relationship, and we are committed to providing high-quality projects that meet the needs of the community. Our dedicated team understands the unique challenges that are distinctive to this part of Essex, and we work tirelessly to plan, design, and implement schemes that genuinely deliver for the wonderful people that live and work here. With a team of nearly 40 staff in Southend-on-Sea, supported by the wider business, we lead hundreds of projects each year, including major schemes that make a real difference.

Beyond Marlborough’s contractual obligations in Southend-on-Sea, their team are deeply committed to the wellbeing of the people that live and work there. Through a range of social value initiatives, and a commitment to local employment, Marlborough’s investment in the community has created positive change with lasting benefits. For example, Marlborough’s Martin Wright, Phil Flesher and Simon Harris volunteered with the One Love Project, which is an incredible charity that offers practical and emotional support to vulnerable adults and families in Southend-on-Sea. They supported the organisation’s food bank service near Southend Victoria station, where their duties included the setting up of a kiosk, the handing out of items and serving food, and helping with the clear up.
Southend-on-Sea City Council commissioned Marlborough to construct a 28 metre-long, 2.5-metre-wide boardwalk with a turning circle on Chalkwell Beach in Westcliff-on-Sea.
After clearing the site and preparing the ground, Marlborough drove heavy duty timber piles deep into the surface. Horizontal stringers were then attached to the piles, acting as the primary support for the decking. Ekki timber boards were then fitted, with the hardwood material offering exceptional resistance to salt water, sand and extreme weather conditions.
With safety in mind, the boardwalk was built at ground level and includes raised edges. Furthermore, the feature was constructed with a non-slip protection treatment, with every board fitted with two strips to prevent falls. The result is a smooth and sturdy surface that offers wheelchair users easy access from the existing footpath to the centre of the beach.
By conducting winter works over a three-week period during the tourism low season, disruption to visitors and to local businesses that rely on holidaymakers was kept to a minimum. And by opting to use light-weight machinery and hand tools, rather than bringing heavy machinery on to the beach, most of the area could remain open to the public throughout the period of works.
The new design is attractive and in fitting with the local aesthetic, and stands as an accessible feature, ensuring that every member of the community can enjoy the beach.
On completion of the boardwalk project, Marlborough and Southend-on-Sea City Council held a planting day as part of efforts to create a climate resilient garden at Chalkwell Beach.
Volunteers from both organisations strategically planted a variety of foliage around the new boardwalk, with grasses and native mature species chosen for their salt-tolerant and weather resistant qualities.
Anna Firth, the MP for Southend West, joined the group, with the meaningful initiative contributing to greater biodiversity.
On 11 April 2024, Marlborough’s Southend-on-Sea team had the privilege of attending the unveiling of the Sir David Amess statue on Chalkwell seafront. It was a moving occasion, providing an opportunity to commemorate and celebrate the life of an extraordinary public figure and much-loved family man. The MP for Southend West was tragically murdered in 2021, with Southend granted city status as a memorial to his life in 2022. The Amess family chose the renowned sculptor Andrew Lilley to make the life-size bronze statue, which captures Sir David’s ‘charismatic smile and warm humanity’.
In the two weeks leading up to the unveiling, Marlborough’s people prepared the memorial site, by reducing, and reshaping the ground level, and fitting a concrete foundation and attractive circular plinth for the statue to stand on. The works also included improvements to the surrounding footways, where the Council’s Parks Department enhanced a rockery and created a new flower bed with coastal roses. Marlborough’s team also renovated two existing nearby memorial benches and installed two additional ones either side of the statue, providing a place for people to reflect and remember.
Furthermore, in July 2024, Marlborough sponsored the transportation and installation of the Knife Angel when it came to Southend-on-Sea. The 27 ft tall, 3.5 tonne statue tours the country, and stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of knife crime. It serves not only as a memorial to the victims, including Sir David, but also as a crucial call for change.

In partnership with Newham Council and East Architecture, Marlborough Highways constructed a memorial pathway as part of the Beckton Parks Masterplan in the London Borough of Newham. Dedicated to the memory of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the attractive new walkway has transformed and formalised a well-trodden, previously makeshift route, connecting a residential estate to the north with Beckton DLR station to the south.
The Beckton Masterplan is a project led by Newham Council to revitalise 36 hectors of green space in the London Borough of Newham. As part of the ambitious scheme, which has involved extensive resident engagement, an area of parkland has been renamed Beckton Meadows, where hundreds of wild flowers have been planted, and a butterfly garden is being created. At the heart of Beckton Meadows there existed an informal footpath, connecting residential streets at one end of Beckton Park, to Beckton DLR station at the other. To make the journey, walkers needed to cut through bushes and navigate a metal railing, with the unpractical walkway both unsightly and unsafe. The well-trodden, but inaccessible route, was identified as one which should be made permanent and more user-friendly. Plans were subsequently put forward by East Architecture for a pathway that would offer walkers greater accessibility while allowing them to enjoy the enhanced surroundings and to reconnect with nature.
The London Borough of Newham has a long and proud royal history. So, following the sad death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and with the permission of the Cabinet Office, there was overwhelming support to dedicate the new footway to her memory, with features needed that would provide a
long and lasting tribute to her life and service. The memorial route also had to be in line with the wider Beckton Masterplan objectives, with a need for it to compliment the natural surroundings, while acting as a place for people to meet, travel and play. On approval of the East Architecture designs, Newham Council appointed Marlborough Highways to deliver the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Pathway. It was important that the project was completed to an exceptional standard and to a tight deadline, with quality materials and innovative construction techniques required. There was also a need to keep disruption to a minimum while works were undertaken, with the park having to remain open to the public throughout.
On inspection of the site during the excavation period, Marlborough’s Civils team worked with Newham Council, ensuring that the pathway’s size, shape, and features were fully in keeping with the natural environment and to East Architecture’s vision. After preparing the ground with a specialised Type 1 Sub-base that allows for better drainage, Marlborough’s Surfacing team then laid a porous CEDEC gravel material complete with durable edging, along the main 120 metre long, 3 metre wide path. A rich golden surface colour was used, which contrasted with the walkway’s entrance,
where the ground was finished with a hardwearing, darker toned resin. At the midway section, an adjoining curved trail was built, made from wood chippings, and designed as an area for people to stop, relax, and unwind. It was here that Marlborough positioned a cycle stand and two stylish benches, creating a place for people to come together and to admire the wild flowers.
Throughout the construction period, Marlborough managed a traffic lights system where the road met with the park’s south entrance. This allowed them to transport the materials and lightweight plant machinery on and off the site quickly, easily, and with minimum disruption to park and road users. This proved vital, particularly when heavy rains disrupted works, and additional equipment had to be brought on site at short notice to deal with the clogged soil.
Now open to the public, the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Pathway serves not only as an enduring legacy to her life, but also as an accessible new space for the entire community to enjoy. Offering a beautiful and wheelchairfriendly connection through Beckton Meadows, the robust pathway will deliver benefits for decades to come, only improving over time as the nearby wild flowers blossom, and the newly planted trees that line the walkway mature.

The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Pathway was officially opened on 15 March 2024, which included the unveiling of a commemorative walkway plaque by the local artist Matt Ponting. During the celebratory event (main image), pupils from the nearby Ellen Wilkinson Primary School joined Councillors and staff from Newham Council’s Parks and Green Spaces Service, as well as members of the Butterfly Conservation Trust.

• Ground excavated and prepared with a quality Type 1 Sub-base material
• Footway surface created using specialised CEDEC gravel finish
• Fitting of edging
• Positioning of 2 benches and a bike stand
• Curved, wood chipped area created
Working with the Butterfly Conservation Trust, Newham Council selected 28 trees to line the memorial pathway, with seven Red Oaks each commemorating a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. 12 Cherry Trees were planted, which will create a magnificent scene when they blossom each spring, and nine Hawthorn Trees were chosen because they will provide a habitat for local wildlife. At the end of the route a single disease-resistant Dutch Elm Tree was placed, demonstrating resilience and strength.
Marlborough offers apprenticeships across a range of disciplines, enabling individuals to further their education, while developing crucial workplace skills. The apprentices receive all the help and support they need from a highly experienced team, with structured learning, on-the-job training and expert guidance from managers and peers provided. Whether they are a school leaver or university graduate starting out in their first job, or someone making a career change, Marlborough apprentices are given a valuable, handson experience, while gaining a formal industry recognised qualification.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week in February, Marlborough hosted a dedicated apprenticeships webinar (pictured right). Delivered by Nula Krawczynski and Paul Haggerty, who lead Marlborough’s apprenticeships programme, they explored the fantastic opportunities available in the highways industry and the benefits of a vocational qualification. Nula and Paul were joined by two existing company apprentices, Ellie-Mae Whitehead and Hayden Evans, who discussed their own experiences and career aspirations.
Marlborough is delighted to announce it has launched a range of exciting operational apprenticeships, which complement the company’s existing officebased apprenticeships programme. The new fully paid placements see applicants work alongside front-line crews, while studying for a Level 2 qualification.
The new recruits begin their apprenticeships by undertaking works across a variety of different departments, providing them with a solid overview and insight into the company’s extensive range of services. They then specialise in their chosen field, with options spanning surfacing,
streetlighting, civil engineering, HGV driving and more.
The 14-24 month long apprenticeships can be undertaken from either Marlborough’s office in the London Borough of Haringey, or from the organisation’s depot in Brentwood, Essex. The placements consist of block release to an external training provider, which is fully funded by the company. There is also extensive onthe-job and off-the-job in-house training delivered by Marlborough’s dedicated Learning and Development team.
On finishing their operational apprenticeships, participants complete an
End Point Assessment (EPA), when their knowledge and skills learned throughout the programme are put to the test. The industry recognised EPA comprises a written exam, practical assessment, and a professional discussion, carried out by an external assessor.
The introduction of the new operational apprenticeships come in response to Marlborough’s continued growth and diversification, with the leadership team recognising the importance of developing a diverse and loyal workforce. recognising the importance of developing a diverse and loyal workforce.
After receiving a huge number of job applications, Marlborough had the pleasure of hosting three recruitment days in May for perspective operational apprentices. During the events in Essex and in London, attendees were invited to take part in a series of group activities followed by 1-2-1 interviews.
They were productive sessions, providing an opportunity for the candidates to learn more about the company and the programme, and for Marlborough’s recruitment team to engage and interact with the applicants.

Marlborough is delighted to announce that it has been accredited with the Highway Electrical Registration Scheme (HERS) Gold award. Granted by the Highway Electrical Association (HEA) on 13 February 2024, the status demonstrates Marlborough’s commitment to excellence, and is a testament to the company’s high standards in the delivery of highways electrical services.
Spanning all manner of electrical engineering in the highways sector, including streetlighting, EV charging, solar infrastructure, and more, the HERS scheme is the industry benchmark for quality. Comprising 246 registered organisations nationwide in the UK, Marlborough is now just one of 13 companies to boast the coveted double logo Gold status, signifying the operator’s exceptional levels of experience and expertise.
The upgrading of Marlborough’s HERS status from standard to Gold follows an in-depth accreditation process, in which the organisation demonstrated the ability to deliver first-class electrical engineering solutions, while operating with the utmost safety. Marlborough also needed to prove that its QHSE processes, site equipment and training facilities are industry beating, and that there is a commitment to continuous improvement and investment in its workforce.
The Gold announcement comes as Marlborough expands its range of highways electrical services, with a growing streetlighting and electrical infrastructure division, delivering innovative schemes across London and the South East in support of it’s local authority contracts.
“Our companywide HERS Gold award is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our electrical team, and I am proud that Marlborough has been recognised in this way. Our talented operatives on the ground are carrying out fantastic work every day, with our cutting-edge technology and incredible industry know-how, helping us to deliver cost-effective and sustainable electrical engineering solutions.”

“ “
Marlborough has purchased six state-of-the-art solar traffic light systems, which have been deployed to sites across Essex. The new equipment is helping teams to operate more sustainably and more cost-effectively, by eliminating CO2 emissions and by removing the need for time consuming and expensive power supply changes. It is estimated that the traffic lights will save nearly 7.5 tonnes in CO2 emissions over a twoyear period. The initiative forms part of the company’s ambitious commitment to go Net Zero by 2025, with Marlborough’s people passionate about the environment and the wellbeing of the planet.
“I am enormously proud of the work that Marlborough has already achieved on its journey to Net Zero, with practical initiatives like the introduction of solar traffic lights making a real difference. The advanced technology not only reduces our carbon footprint but also enhances operational efficiency, demonstrating how environmentally conscious choices have benefits for both our company and the communities we serve.”

Materials used in the surfacing process have traditionally been carbon heavy, with the production of asphalt one of the biggest sources of emissions in the highways industry. But through collaboration with its supply chain partners, Marlborough is committed to using sustainable alternatives wherever possible. This includes purchasing materials that include recycled content from suppliers like Eurovia and Tarmac, with the Base Course used on Marlborough sites now typically containing 30-50% recycled content, and the Surface Course used containing approximately 10-20% recycled content. What’s more, Marlborough has begun sending its planing waste back to producers, so that it can be processed and reused, making its operations not only better for the environment, but also more cost-effective.
Marlborough’s people are valued for their hard work and expertise and are provided with a supportive and rewarding work environment. As well as competitive rates of pay, a comprehensive benefits package, and ongoing training and development opportunities, Marlborough’s staff are also recognised and celebrated through a variety of company awards schemes.
Marlborough’s Employee Recognition Scheme acknowledges the outstanding efforts of staff across the business, providing an opportunity to thank individuals for their dedication and hard work. Managers and supervisors have been given Thank You Cheque books and are encouraged to issue cheques each time a member of their team goes the extra mile. Hosted by the comedian Kevin McCarthy alongside Marlborough’s four directors, there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout, with a drinks reception and three-course meal followed by a live band.
This year’s award categories supported Marlborough’s new company values ‘We are bold. We have spirit. We know people matter. We take pride in everything we do.’ All nominations received needed to express how an employee or team supports the values, and the various award categories meant that people throughout business were recognised and celebrated.
“This year’s Red Star Awards were even bigger and better and were a powerful reminder that our greatest asset is our people. We celebrated not only individual achievement, but a collective success that is embodied through our new company values.
“I was hugely impressed by the quality of the awards submissions and am grateful to everyone who made a nomination. I would like to congratulate all of the winners and those who were highly commended; it is a testament to their talent and dedication.
“The wonderful evening was one that we will all remember with a sense of pride; I am already looking forward to next year’s event.”

Marlborough recognises the importance of volunteering and is passionate about giving back to the communities in which it serves, as well as to wider society. Their people are continually involved in meaningful initiatives across London, Essex and beyond, with litter picks, tree planting days, school engagement sessions, conservation projects, and foodbank volunteering amongst the good work that they are involved in. Their efforts not only provide a wonderful opportunity to give back, but the volunteering also allows Marlborough participants to enhance their personal and professional development.
Marlborough’s Managing Director, Matthew Revell, joined colleagues for a volunteering day at Beckton Creekside in the London Borough of Newham. It was the latest in a series of fantastic sessions at the Thames Water urban Nature Reserve, where Marlborough’s people helped by clearing vegetation and by doing maintenance work. The site attracts a diverse range of wildlife, including migrating birds, small reptiles and amphibians, and rare insects, with the efforts of the volunteers improving the environment and increasing biodiversity.

More than 3,700kg of food was collected, which was then distributed to local families in need.
Marlborough’s team hosted a volunteering day for the Hamelin Trust at their Roots and Shoots space at Sutton Farm near Rochford. The site is used by those staying at the Gowlands respite home, which is a centre for SEN adults, people with autism and those with physical disabilities. Their efforts have helped to create a special place where people can relax, unwind, and get back to nature.
