Paula Rego: Depression

Page 1

Paula Rego

In the 2017 BBC Film about her life and work Paula confesses to having suffered from depression all her life. In 2007, while enduring a particularly dark and prolonged attack she tried to ‘draw her way out’ and produced these eleven pictures which she promptly locked away because she was ashamed of being so depressed.

“That’s how I was feeling. You’re kind of stuck and you hold on to things that make you more stuck. Like holding this rubber thing. You hold on to the wrong things thinking they’d help, but on the contrary, you don’t know good from bad.” PAULA REGO
