In return for getting his students designated as athletic recruits, Singer funded college sports teams, including the Yale women’s soccer team and USC water polo team. Wallace, who previously worked in college admissions at John's Hopkins University, said admissions offices often receive lists from coaches with names of students they want to support or recruit, but may not always get more information about the coaches’ recruitment processes. Wallace said she does not think the case will have any impact on Marlborough’s college admission results this year. Wallace also said that while wealth has traditionally played a large role in college admissions, she said she believes colleges are working to change this. This need was identified expressly by Lelling at Tuesday’s press conference when he noted that the case should draw attention to corruption in the college admissions process. "There will not be a separate admissions system for the wealthy," Lelling said. "And there will not be a separate criminal justice system either.”
