The nature of traditional societies in Mediterranean countries, and the eifect on those societies of the changes brought about in the twentieth century, have long been debated; but in general these debates have started from an assumption of the relatively homogeneous nature of traditional peasant society. In this book Pino Arlacchi demolishes that assumption by demonstrating that within the Italian region of Calabria there existed not one but a range of ‘traditional’ societies. Three are examined in detail: an area of independent peasant proprietors, producing crops on small plots of land; one of market-oriented olive and wine production with an anarchic social structure based on the unpredictability of the harvest; and one dominated by great landed estates where the proprietors controlled a landless labour force. The social phenomena of prewar Calabria, the mafia and the great emigration to the USA, are shown to result from specific forms of traditional societies, rather than relating to Calabrian society as a whole. In demonstrating the variety of Calabrian social formations Professor Arlacchi consistently relates the theory of sociology to its practice, showing how a range of social theories - from that of Hobbes to those of Marx and Weber - can be used to explain one form of society but are in practice inadequate for the analysis of others.

This book will be of interest to a wide range of sociologists, anthropologists, historians and development economists concerned with the nature of traditional societies and the impact of modernisation on them. Written in a vivid style, and offering fascinating insights into the people and history of Calabria, the book will also appeal to general readers interested in the Italian south and the mafia.

‘The author’s object is to analyse the variability of both “traditional” structures and their transformation This is the bestindeed almost the only - analysis of the Mafia phenomenon for Calabria, and one of the best for any region.’
