A NEW £500,000 community fund to help get people in Wigan Borough more active was unveiled by the leader of Wigan Council as the budget for the coming year was set.

Lord Peter Smith, leader of Wigan Council, announced the new ‘Wigan On The Move’ fund at the Full Council meeting in Wigan town hall last week.

It will be available for community groups and sports clubs to bid for and will be targeted at making it easier for people of all ages to be more active – from gentle exercise classes to playing sports.

“This will support people of all ages and all levels of fitness in Wigan Borough to have access to some basic physical activity.

“Just doing some gentle physical exercise can have enormous health benefits. There are also the added social and mental health benefits of being involved in a club and meeting new people.”

Lord Smith said clubs such as St Cuthbert’s Amateur Rugby League Club in Norley Hall were great examples of clubs helping people in deprived areas get active and healthy.

The ‘Wigan On The Move’ fund is part of the Greater Manchester ‘ M o v i n g ’ blueprint which will guide the investment in physical activity and sport at a Greater Manchester level over the coming years.

The new fund announcement came as our councillors overwhelmingly voted to approve the ‘Deal for the Future’ budget for 2016/17 which froze general council tax but included a 2% increase to help fund adult social care.

The meeting heard that costs in the coming year for adult social care, which makes up 30% of

the entire budget for the council, will rise by £6.7m.

The 2 per cent increase in council tax will raise £2.1m.

Lord Smith told councillors the cutting of central government funding for adult social care meant the council was left with no choice but to increase council tax.

The meeting heard Wigan Council will have to save £60m over the next five years, including £15.5m this year alone, due to reduced funding from central government.

But the council was praised from all sides of the chamber for meeting the financial challenges created by the budget reductions and transforming services for the better as part of the Deal for the Future.

Lord Smith added that Wigan Council has the joint lowest increase in Council Tax in Greater Manchester and the second lowest Council Tax overall.

The increase will mean on an average Band D property the council element of the Council Tax bill will increase from £1,192 in 2015/16 to £1,215 in 2016/17.

Wigan Council - the best in the country

WIGAN Borough has the best council in the country according to the latest Best Companies survey results.

With a Best Companies Index (BCI) score of 685.9 – up from 641.7 last year, staff at Wigan Council are among the most engaged in the

country – making Wigan the best council to work for.

The results of the independent staff survey, conducted by Best Companies, revealed that despite having to save £100m, the council’s employees are now more engaged and happier than ever.

Jonathan Austin, founder and CEO of Best Companies, backed up the ambitious claim, stating: “Best Companies Ltd has worked closely with Wigan Council over the last four years and has been most impressed with their improving engagement score, especially in such a challenging, budgetary climate. The council has worked tirelessly to make Wigan one of the best councils to work for in the UK and indeed this year they are.”

Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “It is a huge achievement to be named the best council by Best Companies and is something the whole borough should be proud

of.

“It is especially impressive given these results come after £100m savings have been made with £60m of savings to come.”

More employees than ever took part in the survey with a 72 per cent response rate – up ten per cent from the previous year.

David Hope, branch secretary GMB, commented: “The Unions have worked hard to try to get as many members to fill in the staff survey forms as possible.

“We think it is great that staff have their voices heard and the council changes as a result.”

Each year hundreds of organisations use the Best Companies survey to measure the engagement of their employees.

The official engagement score for Wigan Council staff - the score which Best Companies use to measure engagement levels – has increased for the third year running.

ON Thursday 17th March at 6.30 p.m. a chocolate making session with Gill Ebsworth from Chocolate Velvet in Manchester will take place at the library in THE Standish Methodist Church held an event at the end of February for Christies. Cross Street, Standish.

The cost is £15 per head, but 'Cuppa for The Christie' was held in the Church everyone makes and decorates Hall on February 25th between 10.00 am and their own chocolates and takes 1.00 pm.

All the proceeds were in aid of The Christies and on the day the total raised was £1,088.00.

Good causes pitch for Rotary Club donations WIGAN Rotary Club is again looking to donate cash to local community groups with a ‘Dragons Den’ style event.

Following the success of the last few years, local groups based in postcode areas WN1, WN3, WN5, WN6 are invited to submit their request.

Following initial consideration those groups selected will be invited to put their case to ‘the dragons’ in a three minute presentation.

Wigan Rotary Club President Keith Trencher said ‘ In these difficult times when we are all having to tighten our belts, I am sure there are local groups in the Wigan area who could really use a donation of a few hundred pounds to help them with a project or event they wish to undertake.

Last year twelve groups were successful, but the dragons unfortunately had to decline a number of applications.’

Jane Davenport from the Standish branch of C o o p e r a t i v e Funeralcare raffled of a hamper that branch had donated and raised £34.00 for the chosen charity which is British Red Cross tackling loneliness in conjunction with the C o o p e r a t i v e Funeralcare.

As usual there was lots of dancing and the Community Centre committee put on a great 'Valentines' spread with heart sharped sandwiches, tea and cakes.

There was also a special presentation at the dance.

In this day and age when it is reported to us that the quality of care of old and sometimes vulnerable people is unsafe it makes a refreshing change to report that an old lady with dementia Mrs Green attends our tea dance at the Centre and thoroughly enjoys herself

along with her carer Mandy Wellans. Mandy looks after her charge with patience, compassion and dignity and she too enjoys the interaction with Mrs Green. Unfortunately we learned that Mandy was changing jobs and would no longer be Mrs Greens carer. The 'Valentines' tea dance was the last time she would attend with her.

Mandy so impressed the many people who attend the tea dance that on Friday they made a special farewell gift to her, with a bunch of flowers and chocolates.

Not to overstate the fact she is a credit to her profession and has been a privilege to know her and watch her work with Mrs Green.

Everyone had a great time at the dance and are now looking forward to the next. The tea dances are at the Community Centre every two weeks on Friday. You can call the centre on 01257 421048 for details of the dates and for all other events held there.

AS JANUARY 2016 arrived the GCME (Geoff Carr Memorial Events) declared its final fundraising efforts for 2015.

The committee had set a fundraising objective of £7,000 for the year, this was particularly ambitious, especially in a year that had people checking down their own sofas for pounds, and other disasters around the globe all asking for the publics hard earned money.

IN February John Sanson, Manager of the Grand Arcade in Wigan presented a cheque for £877.00 to the Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Susan Loudon watched by Wigan Central Councillor George Davies.

John said: "Once again the people of Wigan have been generous in the Grand Arcade towards the Mayors Charity which this year is for Dogs for the Blind Association."

Easi-Drive support Manchester Childrens Hospital NATIONAL Accident Management Company, Easi-Drive, which is part of the EDAM Group, unveiled their fleet of toy cars at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital

Three young sisters from Wigan where chosen to receive the toys on behalf of the hospital. Jody, Savana and Cheyenne Furey took delivery of the fleet in February. The youngest of the sisters, Cheyenne, suffers from Chronic Renal Disease and is regularly treated at the Children’s Hospital.

The cars will be housed on the rooftop garden at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and will provide a welcoming distraction for children undergoing care and treatment. EDAM Group Managing Director Steve Turner said: “We’re delighted to have been able to show our support to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. When we heard they were on the lookout for some toy cars we were only too happy to help. As a company we have an initiative in place called WheelsforGood and this year we have set aside a sum of £100,000 to spend on wheel related charities over the next twelve months.”Corporate Fundraising Manager for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, Joel Oxberry said: “We are very grateful to Easi-Drive for their kind donation and are confident that the toy cars will be a great addition to our roof top garden. THIS Easter half term, there’s fun for kids of all ages at My Life at House Thompson Equestrian Centre on Pepper Lane in Standish.

To coincide with the launch of its model railway on March 13th, the charity is running activities for children to discover and learn all about transport through the ages. And on the second week there will be an opportunity to learn all about the animals on the site, including the chickens, goats, pigs, rabbits and peacocks, as well as egg rolling and a Mad Hatter’s tea party.

For those who love the great outdoors, there’s fun and games with My Life’s very own Bear Grylls, Lincoln Yates, who is just back from climbing the two highest mountains in Morocco!

He’ll be running bushcraft sessions, telling stories of his travels and creating outdoor fun and games.

On both weeks, children will have the opportunity to spend time with the animals, get creative, have fun in the indoor soft play area, see the model railway and show off their talents. There really will be something for everyone.

The cost is just £10 per day for children of My Life members, or £15 for nonmembers. Activities run from 10am to 3pm (although earlier drop-off and pick-up times can

be arranged for a small additional charge). Children need to bring drinks and a packed lunch, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. Under 8s must also be accompanied by an adult. Please note: the site will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Look out also for My Life’s Big Spring Clean and Planting day on Sunday, 10 April from 10am to 4pm. Volunteers of all ages are needed (children and adults) – it’s a great opportunity to put something back into the community, and gain experience as part of a Duke of Edinburgh Award, or similar.

If you’re interested in learning more about My Life, volunteering on 10 April or becoming a My Life member, why not pop down to the site on Pepper Lane, Standish, WN6 0PP and take a look for yourself. It caters for people of all ages, with and without disabilities, and is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 4pm with lots of free parking.

It’s also a good opportunity to get your fresh fruit and veg from the on-site farm shop – all produce is locally grown and fantastic value. Bring your dog too, as there is a dog-grooming parlour on site.

WHEN we got the invite to the Octopus Hide Out at Sea Life, Trafford Centre, my little boy (2 1/2) couldn’t wait to see the ‘ sharks and the turtles,’ his favourite, when we visited.

However, when we got there it was certainly the Octopus that made the big impression.

We headed into Sea Life and had our pictures taken by the friendly staff as

we entered a magical underwater world.

There were excellent activity packs for the children, with stickers and interactive activities for each part of the centre.

Our son loved the colouring activities and guessing the different Octopus as we looked into the tanks – he even got to take a cuddly one home!

Thanks again to Sealife for an exciting and educational day out thoroughly recommended.

THERE are many misconceptions about Hospice Care. Many people believe patients only come to the Hospice for end of life care.

The reality is that most people are unaware of the wide variety of other services available; the modern, bright surroundings; the happy atmosphere; and the fact that the majority of Hospice patients never come inside the building!...

Did you know • In-patient Care is only one facet of Hospice Care • The are many reasons why people have a period of in-patient care • Over 60% of in-patients go home • The average length of in-patient stay is 10 days.

With care being provided free of charge to around 900 new patients every year. We rely on the generosity of people within the local community and beyond who have supported the Hospice over the past 25 years.

WE all know that Christmas is the season of giving and thanks to the shoppers of The Galleries Shopping Centre, the Guide Dogs charity, have successfully raised £1,228.94 this December with its merchandise stall.

The stall, based by the entrance to Tyldesley Arcade, ran for three Saturdays by a group of budding volunteers from the charity.

The team also brought along one of their furry friends to help illustrate to the public the lifeline these animals provide to their owners.

There are over 4,800 guide dog owners in the UK alone. With an average lifetime cost per guide dog

Guide Dogs raise over £1,000 at The Galleries Shopping Centre

being £50,000, the charity relies on public donations.

It is because of these canine companions that thousands of people with impaired vision are able to live a life with fewer limitations, or without the need for 24 hour supervision.

Lynette Howgate, centre manager at The Galleries Shopping Centre, said: “We’re delighted that the Guide Dogs fundraising team raised such a fantastic amount. It’s such a worthwhile cause and I’m so glad our shoppers enjoyed their presence.”

Ellen Keane, Guide Dogs trading manager, added: “Thank you to the Galleries Shopping Centre for hosting our stall. We were overwhelmed by the incredible support the community of Wigan showed us and their generous donations allow us to continue our vital work.”

Wigan Little Theatre Review

BE MY Baby follows the fortunes of Mary Adams a young girl sent to a Mother and Baby Home in the north of England by a mother intent on keeping up appearances.

Mary – along with the other girls in the home – has to cope with both the shame and the dawning realisation that she will have to give the baby up for adoption whether she likes it or not. Despite this – and an overbearing matron – the girls' youthful vitality keeps breaking through as they sing along to the girl-group songs of the period.

a decade which is mistakenly heralded as the swinging '60s, a time of freedom and choice when barriers tumbled and Phil Spector propelled girl groups to pop fame.

Behind the liberty, though, were victims, especially the young girls who "got into trouble", usually at the hands of men who discarded the responsibilities of fatherhood faster than a cigarette end.

The four young girls in WLTs production gave strong, convincing performances. Amy Sandbach as Mary, Olivia. Cartwright as Dol and Katie Lancashire as Norma all have excellent moments of humour and sadness. With Sandy Kershaw as Queenie providing a complex character of depth, a very funny yet moving performance from this young actress.

Cathy Owen's uptight middle class mother began with a little too much force - an attractive young actress over aware of playing a middle aged frump! Eventually she settled into the character and was most truthful in the role.

Maureen Scofield provided an unbending, cold, manipulative

Matron. Such characters obviously felt that they were helping and providing a much needed service.

It was difficult to feel sympathy for this powerful woman who used her experience to ensure the girls did what society wanted!

Despite a good deal of splendid work there were one or two moments when the scenes lacked pace. The actors weren't helped by the frequent blackouts most of which were unnecessary and carried out in silence missing the opportunity to include far more of the wonderful girl group pop music of the time.

The production was directed by Stacey Vernon and her AD Maggie Hall.

It was clear at the performance I attended the audience enjoyed the drama and the comedy provided by the piece.

The awards play a key part in the council’s Staff Deal to reward staff’s hard work and commitment.

Among the winners was Gary Jones, a fleet driving standards officer, who won the ‘Giving Something Back’ award.

Gary, who is based at the council’s Makerfield Depot, is a military veteran and last year came up with the idea to use the council’s vehicles to show support for the Poppy Appeal.

Gary placed specially made Poppy Appeal stickers on the council’s fleet of 48 bin wagons, its welfare buses, highways vehicles, road sweepers and building services vehicles.

This helped raise awareness of the Poppy Appeal in the local community and was popular both with the public and with council operatives.

W I G A N ’ S homegrown charity family, Queens Hall Action on Poverty, has a new boss.

Kathleen Pitt has been appointed Chief Executive of the organisation that includes The Brick Project, The Community Warehouse, and two Home From Home charity shops.

Kathleen, who lives in Standish, replaces Trish Green, who retired in December after being at the helm since 2003.

Originally from Cwmbran in South Wales, Kathleen began her career as a social worker. She moved to the North West during the 1980s, when she worked firstly for Lancashire Council and then for Wigan Council.

After rising to the rank of Principal Officer, Kathleen decided to return to a career in the charitable sector.

During her time she has worked for Barnado’s, MHA Care Group, National Children’s Homes and has completed two stints at Liverpool-based charity Nugent Care.

“I have always wanted to be involved with helping people,” said Kathleen, “And I have been fortunate enough to follow this path throughout my career.”

The Queens Hall Methodist Church has been at the heart of Wigan’s town centre community for more than 100 years. It has been involved with the Home From Home charity

Upholland High shows support for Sport Relief

In 2003, the church began a Christmas Shelter for the Homeless, which led to the creation of the registered charity Queens Hall Action on Poverty and The Brick.

Today the charity has its own town centre base.

In a typical week, The Brick sees nearly 200 people who need help with issues such as financial hardship, fuel poverty, homelessness and domestic violence. It speaks to more than twice this number over the phone.

It delivers 150 food parcels, serves 50 hot lunches and provides training opportunities for more than 30 people.

In August 2014 the organisation welcomed a

new member to the family with opening of The Community Warehouse.

Based on Hodson Street in the Wigan Pier Quarter, the Warehouse provides training and employment opportunities for local people.

It provides a range of recycled, refurbished and up-cycled goods for sale.

Proceeds from Home From Home and The Community Warehouse support the wider work of the charity group.

Kathleen said: “The Queens Hall group is a real homegrown success story and I am delighted to have been appointed chief executive.

I will be following all the fantastic achievements that Trish completed during her

time with the charity and continuing the great work she started.

Chair of the Queens Hall Action on Poverty Board of Trustees, John Parker added: “We are delighted to welcome Kathleen as our new Chief Executive.

Crown Green Bowling at St. Maries

THE Bowling Club is welcoming new members to their club at St. Maries, Almond Brook road, Standish.

If you want to get fit, find new friends, have fun and stay healthy then the club can get you started.

Adult bowling will take place on Wednesday mornings between 10.30 a.m. and 12 Noon from March 16th and Saturdays from March 19th.

You will get two FREE coaching sessions from qualified coaches and this will include FREE bowls hire.

England honours for Wigan duo

WIGAN Rugby Union Club is celebrating the selection of two of the club's U18s Colts squad, who have been chosen to represent England in the forthcoming Tri Nations series against France and Ireland.

Tom Carleton and Nick Ashcroft have both represented Lancashire and the North of England over the last few months, and following trials in February, both have made it to the 18s England Counties squad.

This is a great honour for the lads and the Wigan club, and congratulations go out to both Tom and Nick: a club spokesman added: "We all wish them well in the games against France and Ireland in Dublin."

Talent fund supports more of our young sporting stars

MORE YOUNG athletes are receiving support from Wigan Council’s Believe Talent Fund to help them achieve their dreams.

Six sport stars will receive up to £500 from the Deal for Communities Investment Fund to help them pay for travel, accommodation, competitions or training fees and equipment.

The recipients are: Wigan Harriers athlete Jade Louise Williams, aged 23, who will be attending a four-week altitude training camp in South Africa.

Charlotte Newsham, aged 15, who plays football at Blackburn Rovers Centre of Excellence and is an endurance runner with Wigan Harriers. Charlotte will be flying to Dallas in March for an international football tournament.

Synchronised swimming star Greta Hampson, aged 15, who is attending an England training camp in February.

Meg Boydell, aged 15, who plays football at Liverpool Ladies Centre of Excellence. The funding will contribute towards new equipment including boots, trainers and a tracksuit.

Wigan 19 Bowdon 17 South Lancas & Cheshire Div 1 WIGAN'S battle to avoid relegation from SLC1 was given a boost beating Cheshire side Bowdon 19-17 at Douglas Valley.

Having enjoyed early position, Wigan were sold an outrageous dummy and only just held Bowdon a metre short but from a penalty the visitors took a 30 lead.

Wigan responded Lloyd Hughes and Sammy Makinson combining to put Martin Gambles over for a try.

Wigan continued to press with Gambles prominent but the break wouldn't come until a long kick into space by Danny Winrow forced a penalty.

The ball flashed across and Mike Rigby sent Hughes under the posts, Whittle converted for 123.

As the break approached Wigan conceded a

succession of penalties and Bowdon crashed over for a converted try to narrow the home side’s lead to 12-10.

The second period began with both sides showing intent and Bowdon butchering a great chance before being brought back for a forward pass. Inevitably the score came as Bowdon exposed weak tackling to score beside the posts.

A series of aimless kicks by Wigan allowed Bowdon to stay on the front foot, but a break by Hughes sent winger Tyler Spence 60 metres to the line, Whittle again adding the conversion.

At the start of this season, for instance, I doubt anyone would have predicted that, four fixtures in, Wigan would be joint-top of the Super League table without having lost a single match. Slowstarters even when they haven’t got a minor injury crisis on their hands, it’s actually six years since the Warriors last won their opening four league games.

You’ve got to go way back to 2010, and to put that in context, the Wigan team that year contained such longgone players as Martin Gleeson, Mark Riddell, Tommy Leuluai and Stuart Fielden.

What’s all the more remarkable is that Wigan didn’t start 2016 impressively. The pre-season programme served up another of those now seemingly traditional away losses at Leigh, followed by a much heavier beating at Salford, while the opening day’s league clash saw the terrible weather and an even-worse DW Stadium pitch inflict an errorstrewn 12-6 defeat on Catalan Dragons at least as much as a sluggish and misfiring Wigan side did.

Then, of course, there was the horrific 12-42 tonking at the hands of Brisbane Broncos. To make matters worse, having started the season without the likes of Sam and Joel Tomkins, the Wigan team then lost Michael McIlorum to long-term injury.

Talk about the odds stacking against them. It didn’t look good at all. And yet, from that point on, by increments, the Cherry and Whites appeared to go from strength to strength.

We’re now approaching midMarch, and though they’ve often had to scrap furiously to get the points, they’ve thus far beaten every British team that has come against them, and that roster includes three sides – Huddersfield, Salford and Hull – who all have realistic topeight ambitions.

I’m as delighted as much as I’m surprised.

I’m also impressed. There’s been a tough, street-fighting quality about some of Wigan’s recent wins, especially last Friday’s do-or-die encounter at Hull, which saw Matty Smith in particular stand up and be counted, slotting over two dropgoals in the dying seconds to secure a late 25-26 victory after it looked as if the tide of battle

below the bar. The Wigan faithful were then subjected to an excruciatingly lengthy period of added time before the points were secured.

A charge down of a clearancebrought the opening try for the home side, the conversion affording a 70 lead.

Midway through the half Orrell were reduced to 14 as Andy Stott received a yellow card, Thornton taking full advantage with a second converted try and still with numerical advantage set up a series of pick and drives to add a third.

In the closing minutes Orrell set up a series of attacks and from a scrum 15 metres out Michael Caldwell went blind and although stopped short

had turned back in favour of the home team.

This is clearly something of a vindication for Shaun Wane and Ian Lenagan’s approach to the 2016 season. Several times beforehand, both parties expressed their disappointment about how in 2015 Wigan lost vital fixtures by only a few points.

The 12-16 Challenge Cup disaster against Hull KR springs immediately to mind, along with the Grand Final of course, in which Leeds pipped Wigan by 20-22.

But it was early season league failures against unfancied opponents like Widnes (a 22-22 draw in the February) and Hull KR (a 22-20 loss in the March) that really cost Wigan dear, meaning the League Leader’s Shield was not decided until the very end of the season and ultimately relied on a single awkward bounce of the ball in a Huddersfield v Leeds match on the far side of the Pennines.

It was both Wane and Lenagan’s general contention that failing to win unexpectedly tricky fixtures like these indicated a lack of mental toughness among the playing personnel. Whatever happened during the last close season – and we know that Wigan attended a cold training camp rather than a warm one – this trend appears to have been reversed, at least thus far.

All this is in stark contrast to the fortunes of Wigan’s main rivals last year, the Rhinos, who to date have only managed to claim two points out of a possible eight.

It’s probably not going too far to say that Leeds’s disastrous start to 2016 has rocked their fans.

Hailed as the golden boys of the modern game at the end of last year, the Rhinos knew they were parting company with talismanic individuals Jamie Peacock and Kevin Sinfield – both of whom, ironically, are still active, the former now football manager at Hull KR, the latter actually playing Rugby Union at Yorkshire Carnegie (and how galling must that be for the Leeds fans!) – but they really could not have expected to lose against Warrington, Widnes and Catalan in their first three

fixtures of the season.

Leeds have absentees, of course. As the RL media never lets us forget, key players like Danny McGuire and Beau Falloon are currently missing from their line-up, though I’m not sure that’s much more of a crisis than Wigan’s own injury list, which, as well as the Tomkins brothers and Mickey Mac, now includes Willie Isa and Sean O’Loughlin.

But if nothing else, this at least means that Friday night’s big game at the DW is going to be evenly matched and difficult to call.

The big problem for Wigan, to my mind at least, will come in defence. The last two matches have seen some glaring defensive errors on the part of the Warriors, especially against Salford, while at Hull it was indiscipline that almost turned the game on its head, back-toback penalties handing the home side a second half momentum that almost finished

Chris Gregory secured the ball and forced he way over for a try for 19-5 at the interval.

In the second period Thornton added a fourth from a catch and drive and although the home side were reduced to 14 went in for a fifth, the conversion for a 31-5 lead.

Orrell were again reduced to 14 when Michael Cardwell was yellow carded. Thornton again tried to take advantage but the Orrell defence held out.

Back to full strength Martin Gleeson, Scott Robinson and Tom Halsall combined to put Robinson over from the return pass.

by Gleeson sending Robinson in for his second, the centre also slotting thew conversion.

Both these issues need taking care of in time for Friday. Leeds may be short-handed, but they still have the personnel to take advantage of this kind of disorganisation.

Of course, motivation should be less of a problem for the Cherry and Whites.

Several churlish comments about Wigan were attributed to certain persons in the Leeds camp at the end of last season.

Considering Leeds had just won everything, it made for some very unsavoury listening.

Whether it was true or not is unimportant. It is the legend rather than the fact that people often believe, and this would only have added to the pain that Wigan went through in 2015, watching three trophies, at least two of which they had a good claim to, disappearing into the grasp of their arch-rivals.

Victory in this first rematch would hardly make up for the misery of last year, but it would be a step in the right direction.

Even when Leeds were at full strength, I doubt Wigan felt they were unbeatable – the Warriors were as much at fault for their Grand Final loss as Leeds were – but now, with the Rhinos walking wounded and still seemingly struggling to adjust to life without Sinfield and Peacock, Wigan must be aware that this will be a very, very good opportunity to start evening the score.

That said, I still expect this to be an epic struggle. A big and noisy attendance from the Cherry and White faithful can only be of assistance.

Aspull RFC past players reunion

WOODSHAW Park, home of Aspull Rugby Football Club, is hosting a past players reunion on Saturday 26th March from 2 pm onwards.

Aspull 2nds will take on Blackpool in a rearranged Raging Bull Div 5 North fixture, kick off 3pm.

With a second promotion looming for the tabletopping Emus, this will be a great afternoon to catch up with old friends and share a few scoops and a pie or two!
