THE STORY OF MR. DE, MR. SAI AND MR. ALMOST One hundred years ago, in 1919, introduced by Duxiu Chen two men came to China, Mr. De (democracy) and Mr. Sai (science). As the two pioneers in the New Culture Movement, they behaved very progressively.

Nonetheless, they failed to adapt themselves to the new circumstance because of knowing little of China’s traditional culture. Mr. De had to left for a while and he never knew he did have his root thousand years ago in ancient China. Mr. Sai always stayed no matter how hard life was. However, his status was being replaced

by Mr. Almost gradually. In Shi Hu’s essay, Mr. Almost was famous for his generous and optimistic attitude towards life. He never concerned about details and clarity. He always bought brown sugar when white sugar was needed since he thought they are almost the same. He did not even care and complain when his families found him a veterinarian. He finally died, but was deeply remembered as Mr. Almost.

There are another two Mr.(s) in Landscape Architecture field. They are Mr. De (design) and Mr. Sai (science/ research). Design and research are the duos engaging the world with new knowledge for the bright future.

While Mr. Almost(s) still exist. The framework always comes first. However, as Steve Jobs says, “Everything is important - that success is in the details”. A small discrepancy can lead to a great error. For me, detail and clarity create the depth and make the big picture. Though Landscape Architects has been shifting their focus from designing the static result to designing the process, the precision of understanding the process is still the premise. In my opinion, Mr. Almost has no room to play around. One hundred years later, in 2019, I’d like to dedicate myself to not being a Mr. Almost. I’d like to keep the new Mr. De and Mr. Sai in mind. I’d like to keep myself with precision in the career I love and in life. Thus, when things come, I am always clear and ready.

UNFOLD GROUND DESIGN THE CAMPUS SPACE / SITE: UIUC Campus, 8.5 ACRES UIUC 2016 FALL LA336 DESIGN STUDIO / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Mary Pat McGuire This concept transforms the corridor of the military axism, a very old space, into a new integral landscape with a new story about the process of growth and education. With several adjacent academic buildings and academic departments around this site, located at the center of the campus and known as the west-east axis, can become an icon with educational meanings. The process of education means a person grows from unknown to known and then finds goals, to understand and to share with others...... Along the axis, there is a linear path cutting into the ground and when walking along it, you can feel the changing sequence of experience: 1. Flat and nothing is there > 2.Go down into a world with so many things you are not familiar with (hesitate)> 3.Find your goal and follow the orientation to pursue your goal > 4.Gather with people from different fields, share, interact and learn (confidence) > 5.Designer center: a cyber-physical network.

With the context, the edge between each room is mostly defined by the walking orientations. Topography change and planting are the two major strategies to support my concept.

MULTICULTURAL CITY MEDIEVAL CITY RENOVATION / SITE: Nicosia, Cyprus, 50 ACRES UIUC 2019 FALL LA438 DESIGN WORKSHOP II / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Stephen Sears The project focuses on creating a series of dynamic spaces for a whole range of cultural, social, commercial uses adjust to existing heritage sites. The Costanza Bastion of the Venetian wall as the middle place between the center city and extended city. The goal is to dissolve the contradiction between the historic city fabric (heritage) and the current inhabitants’ living spaces (migrant/low-middle income), to enhance a sense of belonging as newly-arrived Cypriots and enhance the multicultural environment of Nicosia.

While the uncertainty of the divided situation still exists, a dynamic and resilient urban spatial configuration is needed. The meeting of different cultures in the old city fabric brings lots of opportunities. “Since people began to move across the Earth so that every culture is in itself multicultural.” And it is important to build a stronger connection, shared values, and senses of belonging between inhabitants and the land. Heritage will matter more when inhabitants feel that the old elements are still functional and alive. The continuous and contemporary cultural-mixing will again form the unique charm of Nicosia.

CONTRADICTION Nicosia is a migrant city. 26.9% of the population of Cyprus are immigrants. Current migration patterns started rising in the 1990s when Cyprus continuously suffered from a labor shortage. Relative higher living standard attracts working-class people from East Europe, Asia, and Africa to Cyprus. Nicosia, the capital city, where labors are in great need becomes the concentration place for immigrants. After the 1974 Turkish invasion, the center city became a zone left behind. Migrants gradually began to occupy the center city area because of the low rent rate, affordable food and goods, and proximity to jobs. The percentage of the non-Cypriots population in the project focus area is as high as 76.5%, while the current heritage conservation and tourism activities seem irrelevant to them.

It is inevitable to think about the migrants when making a renovation plan for old Nicosia city.

EXISTING SURROUNDINGS

STREET ANALYSIS

Investigation starts with the existing context to understand where people live and work and find the opportunity places.

Classification of intersections and streets by types. The irregular figure of the streets in the center city is interesting, but can also get people lost easily.

PLAN DIAGRAM Series of destinations and one main route through the project area. The improvement of the intersections enhance the north-south connection.

MASTER PLAN In this proposal, several key destinations play an import role in creating spaces to engage diverse people through new programming. Between these destinations, connections are enhanced, by emphasizing the intersections, improving the streetscapes and prioritizing pedestrians’ walkability. An open-air market on the Costanza Bastion is the heart of the proposal. Here, artists and local farmers sell their products and fresh food every day, while social activities and festival events occur simultaneously. Connecting structures are built in the moat in order to shift the defensive position of the bastions to an aggregating position. Shared street and linear green spaces are installed in the contemporary neighborhood, extending the market’s walking accessibility to the further south. Into the old city, next to the Santa Maria Abbey and Omeriya Hammam (bath), renovated craftsmen’ workshops, squares, culture gardens are integrated. The workshops become part of the cultural display program. Visitors and locals share the open space, where multi-cultural interaction spontaneously. Further north, next to the new municipal hall, the dated municipality market building is transformed into a center of migrant’s information, educational training, and cultural tourism tying those irrelevant pieces together. The buffer zone to the south of the Turkish Municipal Market, a place with vibrant greenness, remains a potential redevelopment area in a future phase.

The drawing shows the spatial relationship of the Constanza Bastion and moat, as a heart of the whole project. The new development provides space for multi-activities and build the connections.

TEDA CENTER PARK URBANA PUBLIC PARK / SITE: Tianjin, China, 20 ACRES BJFU 2015 FALL DESIGN STUDIO / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Dongyun Liu TEDA is the short name of Tianjin Economic Developing Area. This area is on the west coast of the Bohai Sea. It has already introduced lots of investments (domestic or overseas) and is planning to attract more in the future. It is a place that is full of development potential. This project is about a space in the center of the urban area and also the axis of TEDA. From research and background information, we know this area is a dispensable part of a green system of the city and is surrounded with complex land usages, such as colleges, apartments, court buildings, hospitals, central plazas, and main streets. With my considerations, the place will serve as a public open space instead of a simple park. I try to design it as a sunken space in order to lighten the negative impact of city roads and create a sense of closure.

CONNECTOR FOR LOS ANGELES + ITS RIVER / SITE: Los Angeles, 300 ACRES UIUC 2018 SPRING LA438 DESIGN WORKSHOP II / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henson The goal is simple: to create large parks, grow trees and build connections.

“Platform” and “Nursery” are the two strategies. Multi-scale platforms will be placed in seven sites in the framework, which would constitute new large park complexes together with the current parks providing open spaces for activities and connections of both sides as well. “Nursery” will serve as an economical mode to start growing trees in Los Angeles. Over time, trees grow bigger and are going to be replaced by other species or thinned out, whilst the clearings indicate for future demands. Two strategies together would create a new network of spaces for nature and human. The River serves as a backbone with green connectors. Starting from the river, a lot of greenness evolves and engages in the gray urban concrete world.

CYBORG COHABITATION URBAN WILD ZONE / SITE: Chicago UIUC 2018 FALL LA537 DESIGN STUDIO / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Conor O’Shea This project adopts the cyborg landscape concept in order to integrate wildlife into the Chicago Landscape Ordinance. It creates a better wildlife-human system in a sustainable and ecological way, which can provide new habitats for wildlife in the urban environment but also understand the risk and improve the human’s adaptation to wildness. A series of ecological hybrid infrastructures are the key components in this hybrid system, where wildlife and human are equivalent players (interface). They can operate in the present, grow through time, and encourage new forms of wildlife and human interaction, creating novel ways for them to cohabit the built environment. In order to achieve this, a new section of the ordinance for wildlife is needed, but the contents may or not refer to the existing Chicago ordinance.

BEIXINZHUANG PARK COMMUNITY PARK DESIGN / SITE: Beijing, China, 30 ACRES BJFU 2015 FALL DESIGN THESIS / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Hongli Zeng The designing space is located in the Beixinzhuang community of the Fragrance Hill district of Beijing, which is one the most important spaces of the Fragrance Hill district and is close to the Fragrance Hill Park. Fragrance Hill is a famous tourist site in Beijing, is one of the important part of the 3 mountains and 5 gardens, because the presence of the fragrant hills, Fragrance Hills area is full of commerce, tourism, catering. It is not the rural landscape anymore like before. However, due to many factors, this area lacks unified planning and management. The site as a suburban development of the fragrant hills has got many problems. It is difficult to meet the requirements of people in the region nowadays. With time passing, the Fragrant Hills area must be modified, which presents many challenges and as well as opportunities.

Planning and design of this project is to investigate the urban community green space with the junction of scenic parks planning and design methods.

On the premise of respecting the natural environment, green space is discussed about how to meet the needs of residents’ life and leisure functions, promoting social, economic and cultural development. The project combines with knowledge of ecological environment construction and restoration the original green vegetation, improves the overall environment, and enhances the overall image of the Fragrance Hill scenic area.

ZHUMADIAN LIANJIANG RIVER WATERFRONT PLANING / SITE: Zhumadian, China, 120 ACRES BJFU 2015 FALL DESIGN STUDIO / GROUP WORK WITH YIZHEN DING INSTRUCTOR: Xiong Li Lianjiang River, located 2 miles away from the city center, runs from the west and finally goes into the Suya lake reservoir in the east. In the portion of where, the river intervenes with the City the water surface is about 400ft wide. In order to control the flooding issue, the city successes in maintaining 250-400ft wide margin areas on the both side of the river. These areas are the great places for developing waterfront parks. A smaller tributary merges into Lianjiang River from the southwest and creates a triangle area, which could be a potential ecological wild zone. As the city is continuously expanding to the south, the river becomes an area in need of new development. It is going to be transfered from a single functioning flooding control infrastructure to a multi-functioning public urban recreation space.

WATERFRONT VILLA ARCHITECTURE DESIGN / SITE: Dongjiao, China, 0.1 ACRES BJFU 2013 FALL ARCHITECTURE STUDIO / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Ming Zhao, Hongli Zeng This house is planned to be located in the forest of Dongjiao, Hainan. It is designed to be built by the waterside of the sea. The slingshot-like distances to the sea and the stability of the climate guarantee the persistent accessibility to the water and the beautiful breathtaking scenery. The house is designed for a family of three. For my understanding and my goal, the house will provide them not only a comfortable living environment, but a friendly contact with the water as well.

FLOW CHANNELS ECOSYSTEM INVESTIGATION / SITE: Western Australia UIUC LA590 ECOSYSTEM SURFACE STRATEGIES / INDIVIDUAL WORK INSTRUCTOR: Goetz Bradford

When looking around the Earth’s surface in Google Earth, I found this amazing landscape -- a chain of colorful lakes. There are thousands of large and small isolated lakes located irregularly in Western Australia which present slight different colors. When I investigated the history images , I found that the outlying of these lakes are always changing. If you look closely enough to the image, you can see the contour marks left by the water levels in the past.

The size of the lakes vary rapidly. The large lakes compose the bone structure of the whole chain, while the small lakes scatter nearby. Though the lakes never flow, they actually exchange the water and materials in a vertical way.

The water in the lakes evaporates to the air and is replenished by precipitation, groundwater, mountain water and other sources. Along with the water cycle, there are many mineral or chemical element exchanges, such as the carbon cycle, sulfur cycle, and chlorine system. The lake serves like a gate, a stage, an interface which allows all the flows, exchanges, and circulations to happen. Got inspiration from this, instead of building one single surface, I would like to investigate this in multiple surfaces. I choose the cube with six surfaces as the framework and build the flow channels between them in three direction (x, y, z). The shapes of the channels are mostly defined by the surface’s condition and you can control the quantities of the channels due to different situations. The spaces inside or in-between the channels are created and can be occupied with multiple functions.

CRAPEMYRTLE STUDY PLANT + ITS APPLICATION / SITE: SOUTH THE US PLANT RESEARCH WORK Lagerstroemia, the Crapemyrtle as it is commonly called, is native to China. It has been cultivated in the southern part of the United States since its introduction into this country more than a century and a half ago. The common name is derived from the crinkled and ruffled petals on the end of the long, slender claw and the resemblance of the leaves to the true myrtle, Myrfws communis L. Other regional names are “Flower of the South”, “Gastragna”, “Gastragnier”, “Lagastragna”, “Lagas-tragnier”, “Lagerrose”, “Lilac of India” and “Lilac of the South”. In China, the plant is called Bai Ri Hong (Hundred Days Red) because it flowers for long periods; “Monkey Don’t climb” because monkeys cannot climb the smooth, slippery trunks; and “Itching Tree” because when the trunk bark is scratched the smaller branchlets shiver.

In the summer of 2014, I joined in a group which works on the study of Lagerstroemia and is devoted to making the Lagerstroemia widely used in landscapes in future China. The same year in July, we started to conduct several relevant surveys in some places of China, like Shaoyang in Hunan and Suyang in Jiangsu. Then in August, we spent half a month studying the industry of nursery plants in the US and Lagerstroemia is no doubt our major focus.

In the summer of 2018, after getting the Fiel Field Travel Fellowship offered

by UIUC, I traveled to the southern US again (from Washington DC to Atlanta) again taking thousands of pictures of Crapemyrtle. The mapping and investigation results are upcoming this year. The left image is a sample drawing.
