A Look Back at the Past Season and prepare for 2025-26

Cougar Playing Locations

Landers Soccer Complex

Landers Soccer Complex is the home for the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The complex, itself, has been around for nearly 20 years and hosts youth soccer leagues and youth soccer tournaments during the summer and fall. Landers is also home for Scottsbluff High soccer teams.

Before Landers soccer complex was built, the Cougar soccer teams played at Southeast Veterans Park in Scottsbluff

Cougar Palace

Cougar Palace is the home for volleyball and basketball games. Cougar Palace is in its 56th year of existence. The first game played in the current Cougar Palace was in January 1969 and since then Cougar Palace has been home to many Cougar volleyball and basketball games, including many Region IX championships. On top of that, Cougar Palace has hosted high school volleyball state championships, high school basketball, youth basketball, youth camps, concerts, community events, and many more. The original Cougar Palace went from 1969 to 2000 and that was when the current gym configuration took shape.

The weight room was organized in 2019 and is much larger than what it used to be with several weight lifting bars, walkers, and bikes. It is located in the Williams Building.

bigger athletic training room is located in the Williams building and had four treatment tables and a taping table and plenty of room for the athletes.

Cougar Playing Locations

Volunteer Field

Volunteer Field is the exclusive home for Cougar softball. Volunteer Field is located behind Cleveland Field on West 20th Street and was built, or rebuilt, in the diamond it is today. Volunteer Field has been the home of many Region IX championships and plenty of All-American softball players that have played softball for the Cougars.

Before Volunteer Field, the Cougar softball team played at Lacy Park in Scottsbluff and also at the Carpenter Center in Terrytown.

Cleveland Field

Cleveland Field is the home for the Cougar baseball team. Located on West 20th street, this field has plenty of history in the Scottsbluff/Gering area from being an exclusive softball field at one time.

Cleveland Field took on a major change over the summer when artificial turf was installed in the infield. The outfield is natural grass.

Cougar Athletics in the Community

The WNCC athletic department gives back to the college in helping in many ways in the community and each year the athletic department helps out in a new area.

This past year, members from the volleyball and women’s soccer team took part in National Night Out on Broadway in Scottsbluff during the first Tuesday in August. This year (2024-25) the National Night Out festivities is slated for August 5.

International Walk to School Day was held in October and the Cougar softball walked kids to Westmoor Elementary in October and then played with them on the playground. The softball team also spent a few Friday mornings at the Humane Society, walking dogs.

Also several athletic teams helped out with the Monument Marathon. Behind the scenes were the softball and baseball team where the softball team was at the pre-race day festivities and the baseball team did the tearing down after the race and the pre-race sign-in.

The baseball team also helped tear down other events as well.

During the race, players from the men’s and women’s basketball team helped out with the starting and also at the finish line at Five Rocks.

Other events that happened include the soccer teams helping conduct soccer practices with youngsters and taking part in church gatherings while going and talking to elementary schools.

Several other sports teams also visited elementary school as well.

The other thing is the players were available at games, whether they were playing and after the game to sine autographs, or just to talk to the youngsters and adults while watching their other players play.

If there is an event going on or you want some athletes to come talk to your school or help out, just contact the WNCC athletic office or athletic director Ryan Burgner. You can also email the coach or contact them as well.

WNCC athletics thrives to be a part of the community.

The men’s soccer team hold the Region IX championship trophy high after winning their first title under Todd Rasnic last fall. The only other time the team won regionals was in 2003, the program’s first year but that team never went to nationals.

It was a late night for the volleyball team when they played Central Wyoming up in Torrington, but the Cougars battled back and captured the 5-set win in thrilling action with the match ending close to 11 p.m.

The women’s basketball team outscored McCook 21-9 in the fourth quarter to claim a 61-56 win that gave the Cougars the right to host the Region IX tournament. WNCC finished the season at 25-6.

WNCC’s Elijah Burney celebrates with the team after Burney had a big offensive rebound and putback to give the Cougar men an 85-83 win over North Platte in a nailbiter of a game in February.

Clayden Brandon as the sophomore faced just 21 batters
was just one hit from a perfect game in the 1-0 win over Lamar on April 6.

JoLee Huffaker makes a catch in the outfield during the regional tournament in McCook. WNCC finished runner-up.

The WNCC softball celebrate a home run in game two against Fort Hays Tech Northwest. The Cougars won that game 40-4 in a game where Jenika Fuentes scored six times and Mykah Klumpp had five RBIs in the win to start the month of April.

A year after graduating, these two met up and had to come back and watch some games and visit athletic trainer Doug Jones at a soccer match. These two became good friends with volleyball player Megan Bewley and softball player Devyn Priselac.
