Corning Community College ​good afternoon everyone my name is Melissa he Bauer and my action research project was on decreasing this behavior to increase instructional time it was done at Kermit Johnson Elementary where there's about about 800 students in third fourth and fifth grade forty percent of our students are white forty percent of our students are African American and twenty percent of our students are Hispanic and sixty-six percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch and there is forty four full-time teachers on staff so the significance of this project is that we're gonna analyze the results of the data and see the difference between our fall numbers and our spring numbers in in regards to infractions that are being documented and then we're also gonna see if our overall infraction number decrease from fall to spring semesters so why should we care in Jefferson County elementary schools Kermit Johnson has the third most infractions so if you're unfamiliar with Jefferson County it is a very large school district so having number three of behavior is kind of an alarming number that the administration and teachers will look at and in accra Johnson our top three infractions are defiance harassment and fighting and those top three have been our top three for the past two years and those top three infractions also result in some kind of suspension where whether it's one two or three days so obviously if a student is suspended whether it's one two or three days they're missing key instructional time that they really really need so some research that I looked into that I thought was very relevant to Kermit Johnson so some research says that teachers and students of the same race have have a lower number of behavior referrals documented and at Kermit Johnson we have sixty percent of our students are either Hispanic or africanamerican and r44 teachers that are on staff about 93% of them are white so that's something we as administration and staff want to look into you and maybe this is something that we can maybe potentially change especially during the summer when we're doing some new hiring and then there's some research saying that behavior referrals on the bus usually refer are usually happening when they're longer best routes so if you shorten the but the best routes that obviously there's gonna be least amount of behaved misbehavior the faculty members students I mean attitudes towards students obviously has an effect on behavior and referrals that are being documented and then also when teachers and staff incorporate teaching of social skills and character character and that also affects the behavior numbers so the methods of our step of our actual research project the subjects are all students and all of the teachers everyone was incorporated within this project no one was excluded and the location was the bus route and the campus building at Kermit Johnson the study design was quasi experimental design because there was no random selection of students everyone was involved the independent variable is the behavior strategies that we gave to the teachers and implemented and then the dependent variable is the results and so we will compare the two to see if it was successful or not the overview of the procedures we implemented four procedures within this action research project the first thing that we did is that we met with the department heads and lead teachers and gave them all this information that I'm giving you today and gave them some the research also gave them some strategies that they could implement and then we gave them the opportunity to kind of incorporate this on their own however they felt that their students at their level would benefit from and then we had monthly faculty meetings that just provided support and review and discussion through this action research project and then we had to reward systems we had a class act class act award that was given 2/3 are given to a 3rd 4th and 5th grade homeroom at the end of every month that had the least amount of behavior referrals they were given a pizza party at lunch that day and it was announced in the morning announcements and then at the end of that day for the afternoon announcements the bus of the Month award was given to the bus that had the least amount of referrals for the past month and they were dismissed 10 minutes early for a popsicle party on the front of the school and then there was also a magnet that was put on their bus for the whole next month that said bus of the month and then the guidance counselor gave many lessons to the classes and then also the teachers that where they could implement it through their content lesson plans about character ad and social skills so here are the results so this is 3rd grade for our top three referrals which was defiance harassment and fighting and as you can see from fall to spring semesters there was an increase in all three of our top three infractions there was no decrease so third grade there was no decrease in this those top three however this is fourth grade this is fifth grade again top three of defiance fighting and harassment from fall to spring semester both fighting for fourth and fifth grade there was a decrease in in fifth grade there was a also a decrease in harassment defiance there was increases on on all levels all grade levels but for fourth and fifth grade there was a decrease for fighting which is good and then in fifth grade we had two decreases which was harassment and fighting so it seems as if fifth grade there's

students or teachers are having more enthusiasm around this around the award reward systems there's there's some kind of more buy-in here and then our overall outcomes so from the fall semester we had three hundred and fourteen infractions and then the spring semester we had 290 so there was a decrease in overall infractions this this also is not including our top 3 this is including our top 3 but then also there's 18 other misbehaviors that are documented in these these large numbers so some discussion on the action research project so from 314 to 290 in the between the fall and spring semester that's a difference in 24 and that's great that's that was a success and that's great where we're seeing some kind of buy-in with the students and teachers however 24 is significantly small when you're when you're talking about in the 200s and closer to 300 data numbers so so we're seeing maybe we should have implemented it more you know strictly or maybe a little bit sooner just some things to kind of reflect I'm also the the fourth and fifth grade decrease with the fighting and harassment that decrease was only four so again not a huge number and like I mentioned earlier there's 18 other documentation behaviors that are documented so it seems as if we are decreasing that number but in other areas besides our top three which is fighting and defiance and harassment so it kind of seems as if to reflect on this action research project it might might seem as if we maybe had a huge reliance on just decreasing our overall number didn't matter what documentation it was didn't matter what behavior it was and maybe looking back on it we should put more of a focus on the top three which is the bulk of our our numbers that are being documented so the Alabama standards that are being mastered through this our action research project is standard 2 which is instructional capacity and standard 3 which is instruction obviously because we are wanting to increase that instructional time that is being missed through these infractions and suspensions standard 5 which is community of care for students because we want our students to have supportive relationships we want our students to feel safe and personalized culture of care and then standard 11 which is continuous school improvement obviously with this it's very self-explanatory we wonder what if we want our school to be the best it possibly can and so implementing this project increases our school improvement again with the success of the decrease of our overall extraction numbers and then here are some of my references and then shifting gears to our next project that I chose was unethical behaviors of educators which is the project that we did in law ethics why I chose this project I chose this project because it seems as if every time I turn on the news set the reputation of the school system and the educational experience is being tampered through the media and I want to kind of you know reevaluate that and I want to increase it to more of a positive light and media plays a huge role in this however this is the future and the three things that we're going to be looking at through this project at social media sexual behaviors with students and teachers and then the state assessment testing and again this is the future it's not going away so we might as well hit ahead on as an administrator so the first thing that we're going to look at is social networking with students again this is not going away so as administrators I feel like we need to have a good head on her shoulders about this and have something that is that is being implemented and our students and our teachers who know this so the pros for using social media with students is that it's just convenient everyone everyone's on it it's a convenient way to communicate there's an enthusiasm around social outlets social media outlets however cons it opens the door to inappropriate relationships and teach and conversations with to teachers and students and then in a more innocent way I feel like teachers and students being friends on Facebook make them mayor your Twitter Instagram or any other social networking outlet it has just more students are more they're gonna look at the teachers a little bit more in a friendly and not an authoritative figure way and not of a teacher weight counts are way more of appropriate way because they're seen a little bit more than what you're you're letting them see during the school day instead recommendations as as an administrator or what I would do is I would encourage my teachers to have second accounts on social media outlets that are just for the classroom instead of having you know instead of you being friends with a parent or a teacher through your personal let's just say Facebook account create a new Facebook account that says your content in your classroom and become friends with them through that outlet the great conversation apps like remind what I want are great to use and then also implementing a social media plan so having this line that we're not gonna cross and we're gonna do all of these things we're gonna use blogs we're gonna create a second accounts we're gonna use remind101 and then we're gonna get to this line and then we're not gonna cross this line and so then inappropriate sexual behaviors with students I think social networking kind of goes right into having this inappropriate sexual behaviors the number is growing rapidly again it seems as if every time we could go to on the news we're seeing something around the world where there's another case of inappropriate sexual relationships with students there's a lot of training with new teachers and older teachers the there's an increase of student behavior with society that they know a lot more than what they did when we were younger my recommendations for an administrator that I would give to my students and my staff is that I would tell my teachers should not accept Facebook you know request friend request on any social networking outlets from students you know you can become a big you can become a victim of those things and then creating and creating your own

classroom accounts just be creative but cautious and then cheating on on status but again this is something that like we don't see maybe as often in the media but it does occur I think some of the reasons why we see this is their job security there might be a financial bonus that is backing this you know there's just such a pressure to have these targeted goals and so some recommendations as an administrator I would have some kind of score variation especially in minority communities we don't have the resources that some other schools do and then focus on an improving achievement versus punishing the lower school scores especially with teachers and then the standards that were mastered the vision and mission standard which was number one you know really you just always focus on that vision and mission no matter what you do the community the care for students we want our students again to feel safe and secure and cared for when they come to school and then the professional culture for teachers and staff keep making sure that your your staff is is being professional no matter what and the community of engagement for families going back to the social media outlets you know that's a great way to communicate but we need to do this the correct way operations and management making sure that you have those plans in place and that you're doing this the best way and that you're you're providing support through the management of the of your staff and then the ethical principles and professional norms just making sure that everything is being done in the most moral and ethical way and then these are my references and thank you so much for your time and hope you have a great rest of the day State University of New York at Cobleskill.
