2018 Northern BC Commercial Building Awards Welcome to a night where we celebrate the very best Commercial and Industrial buildings in Northern British Columbia - from 100 Mile House to Prince George, and from Fort St. John to Prince Rupert! This is the fifth edition of the Northern BC Commercial Building Awards, which are held every second year. Business Examiner Peace Cariboo Skeena, one of four monthly business newsmagazines throughout the province under the Business Examiner News Group banner, produces this event, along with Commercial Building Awards on Vancouver Island, the Thompson-Okanagan-Kootenay region, and the Fraser Valley Events like this would not be possible without our sponsors. Re/MAX Commercial, MNP LLP and the Northern Regional Construction Association have stepped forward as Gold Sponsors of this event, which also welcomes the Northern Regional Construction Association and the All West Glass as Category Sponsors. Congratulations to all finalists and all of those nominated. The interest in these Commercial Building Awards has been very strong. We received a large number of individual nominations from all over the region. To be eligible for nomination, an investment, commercial or industrial building, development or renovation projects ad to have been completed between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2017. The challenge of naming the finalists went to our team of independent judges, selected from the professional and development industries. Their biographies are on page 3. The criteria required a building or renovation project to complement the surrounding properties and area, be esthetically pleasing, include unique architectural features, and answer a specific development need within the community. The level of finish and choice in construction materials was also a determining factor, as was any environmentally friendly or green elements for possible consideration. We are very excited about the future of these Commercial Building Awards, and the high level of quality development underway all over the region. This program has been designed to showcase the finalists, and the results of this event will be distributed to media outlets throughout the region, and be available online through www.businessexaminer.ca. Mark MacDonald Thank you for being part of such a special evening!

The project involved the rejuvenation of an older building on a stretch of Highway 97 through the District of Chetwynd. It created a design model for other new structures in chetwynd by tying together the themes of northern climate and Chetwynd’s logging industry. The project resulted in the rejuvenation of the two nearby structures, and a new building that followed a similar design to the Hub International building.

This project took a neglected building with an industrial feel and rejuvenated the façade to give it a charming west coast look, as well as making the building more energy efficient. The developer took advantage of available grant money to accomplish this on a small business owner’s budget (thanks to City of Prince Rupert and NDIT). They shared that grant money within the community by working with local businesses (All West Glass for the windows, Laxmoon Builders Supply for the cedar).

BUILDING SOMETHING BETTER

Building the North, Together As a Gold Sponsor of the Northern BC Commercial Building Awards, MNP proudly congratulates all this year’s award winners and nominees.

Successful commercial developments create employment and economic opportunity, while literally shaping our communities and making the North a better place to live and work.

When you consider the hard work and dedication that goes into every successful construction project, it truly is an achievement worth celebrating. These awards are a chance to recognize all the parties involved – from the business owners all the way to the sub-trade contractors who help to turn the initial vision into a reality.

That’s why MNP is extremely proud to support these awards. As advisors to the real estate and construction industry, we look forward to working with you to build stronger businesses and even stronger communities across the North.

Beyond building great projects, it’s also important to acknowledge the important role commercial construction companies play in building our communities.

Again, on behalf MNP’s entire Northern B.C. team, congratulations on your achievements and best wishes on your continued success. Andrew Adams, CPA, CA, CFP Partner, MNP Prince George

Ashley Homestore keps the solid wood post design in their new expansion. There are two stunning floors of solid windows. It’s the first build in downtown Prince Rupert since the 1970s. The project included a large vestibule, so clients can quickly escape any inclement weather. It also included heat pumps throughout the 2nd story for air conditioning in the summer months.
