All together now

W

ell, it’s the end of another year, and now is the time to reflect upon what has transpired over the previous months, and set a clear course for the months that lie in front of us. For me, this year has been one of many professional and personal challenges. I don’t need to go into details, but suffice it to say the circumstances of my life are more difficult than they have ever been at any time in the past. I could not have navigated the treacherous terrain of the year 2009 without the help of my family and friends. Along the same lines, I can assure you that Balanced Living would not be publishing today without the strong support of its core group of advertisers. One of my college friends always said, “If we party together when the gettin’ is good, and have

Northeast Ohio is a village, and we all have to help each other these days. each other’s back when the goin’ gets tough, the world will be a better place.” Maybe not as profound as some inspirational statements, but you get the spirit of what he is saying. It takes a village to survive these days. The holistic health and wellness/sustainable living community of Northeast Ohio is a village, and we all have to help each other survive and thrive in the year ahead. Balanced Living will do its part

to be a hub of activity for the local market. In the year ahead, you will see a new approach to the content of each issue, a new web site, a specialized web portal for consumers and in April, we will sponsor the Gift of Light Expo, a new live event. There are many days when I wake up in wonder at the world, at the possibilities, opportunities and chances that exist for all of us. In our own way, we have the ability to change the world for the better at any moment, if we choose to do it. In 2010, I ask you to look for your chance to make the world a better place. You can do it one thought and one action at a time. Have a great holiday season and an exciting start to the new year. MARK S. KUHAR, PUBLISHER

News from Ever y where

Freshly brewed is better

I

f you enjoy freshly brewed beer, you can either go to a local brewpub such as the Great Lakes Brewing Company, or you can brew it yourself. The Brew Kettle, Strongsville, offers the second option. At The Brew Kettle you are the brewer. The Brew Kettle is a social gathering place where small and large groups of brewers can reserve one to six kettles. A brew session lasts approximately 2 1/2 hours. The benefit of this kind of brewing is a beer that is fresh and free from the preservatives of commercial beers. While you're brewing, you can relax and enjoy a beer or homemade soda from their great selection. After brewing they will help you cool and transfer your brew into a fermenter. Two weeks later, your

beer will be chilled, filtered, carbonated and ready for you to bottle. A brew session produces six cases of beer (22 oz. bottles). Business owner Chris McKim and his wife Pam operate The Brew Kettle. ”Our expert brewing staff is always ready to help you brew your own,” Chris says. ‘We promise you'll be proud to exclaim, ‘That's my beer!" And every batch comes with our complete-satisfaction-guarantee. We look forward to serving you.” The facility also has a full-service bar and restaurant on-site, and a new sister business in the same shopping center: Your Wine Cellar, which offers the opportunity to make fresh wine. Visit them online at: www.TheBrewKettle.com.

Pumpkins for Great Lakes ale locally grown

T

he Great Lakes Brewing Company’s (GLBC) Pint Size Farm (PSF) at Hale Farm & Village yielded an astounding 300 pounds of organically grown pumpkins in its second season of operation. These pumpkins, a variety noted for flavor and perfect for brewing, were used by Luke Purcell, pub brewer, to produce his annual Pumpkin Ale. This beer is one of Purcell’s “Pub Exclusives” and is only available for a limited time in GLBC’s Brewpub. Christine DeJesus, Pint Size Farm’s master gardener, harvested the pumpkins, which Purcell roasted onsite in GLBC’s brick oven. Purcell brewed 14 barrels of this seasonal favorite. GLBC leases the land for Pint Size Farm from Hale Farm & Village, which is nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area and operated by the Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS). Hale Farm functions as a 19th century agrarian and village community

with strong educational emphasis on the history, culture and development of the Western Reserve. PSF is now 16,000 square feet, more than double the 6,000 square feet cultivated in 2008. All operations at PSF are conducted under the strictest organic standards and consider at all levels the ecological role the garden plays in the delicate ecosystem of the Cuyahoga Valley. PSF is a crucial cog in the sustainability wheel that GLBC has turned for the past 20 years. PSF supports the production of vegetables and herbs destined for the GLBC Brewpub and for the brewing of certain GLBC craft beers. PSF is the enriching and educational workplace, or edible schoolyard, for GLBC staff, the gathering place for company retreats and is available for tours by the public. Growth Through Forgiveness

A

s the seasons change and thoughts turn toward the holidays, it is a good time to let go of negative energy and think about forgiveness. One definition for forgiveness is “giving for self.” You are choosing to let go of anything that is preventing you from living your life fully and making a choice to move forward. The past cannot be changed, but you have the power to choose how to live in the present and the future. The act of forgiveness is a conscious decision and a choice that can open up space up in our hearts and result in emotional and spiritual healing. Practicing forgiveness frees energy and allows you to concentrate on living well. During the holidays, it allows you to enjoy the goodwill the season affords. How do you start this process?

First, decide who you need to forgive and why. Do you need to forgive yourself, another person, the universe (higher power)? Be specific, and focus on a particular issue related to forgiveness. Rituals are one way to begin the process. To get started, write down who you want to forgive and why: ● You______________________ ________ ______________me. (1-2 short sentences.) ● I forgive you so that I can_____ ________________________. (something for yourself) You also may find a quote that resonates with you. Read one before going to bed or upon waking. Here are a couple to get you started. “Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.” – Martin Luther King

“If you let go a little, you will have a little happiness. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of happiness. If you let go completely you will be free.” – Ajahn Chan

The truth of forgiveness According to Jack Kornfield, author of The Art of Forgiveness, Lovingkindness and Peace, there are several truths to practicing forgiveness: ● Forgiveness is not weak or naïve. ● Forgiveness does not happen quickly. ● Forgiveness does not forget, nor does it condone the past. ● Forgiveness does not mean we have to continue to relate to those who have done us harm.

Time to reflect This holiday season, take time to think about where you want to be

and how forgiving yourself or someone else can help you find a place of peace and joy. To continue on the path to forgiveness try these recommended sources: ● www.fetzer.org/loveand forgive/ home ● The Art of Forgiveness, Lovingkindness and Peace by Jack Kornfield – Book ● Art of Forgiving by Robin Casarjian – Audio Cassette Mary Fisher Bornstein, LISW, and Betsy Kohn, MA, PC, are staff at The Gathering Place, a Northeast Ohio cancer support center. Yoga Matters Proactive & Personal Transformation

The Five Vrttis: Fluctuations of Consciousness By Karen Alligire, MFA, RYT

I

n the Yoga Sutras, the sage Patanjali defines yoga in the second sutra of the first chapter: yogah cittavrtti nirodhah. This sutra is generally translated, “Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of consciousness.” It asks us to curb the incessant flow of thought that usually clutters our minds. Citta is consciousness. Vrtti is translated as modification or fluctuation. Literally vrtti means “to turn” or “to whirl” indicating the constant movement of the mind. Nirodha is restraint, control, or stilling. Citta-vrttis are the mental activities that keep us from recognizing the deep peace and wisdom of our true nature. Learning to slow down mentally and experience gaps between our thoughts is an essential aspect of yoga practice. Over time, we learn to extend quiet moments into sustained experiences of inner silence. The experience of deep peace gets more familiar and permeates our awareness, influencing various aspects of life in a positive way. All the methods of yoga are aimed at our direct realization of who we really are. According to the sacred texts of many traditions, our essential nature is blissful, free of suffering, and connected to all that is. Before we can experience this essential nature, we must first learn to recognize how the mind fluctuates, moving rapidly from thought to thought. In Sutra I:6 Patanjali names five modifications of consciousness or citta-vrttis (turning of consciousness.) These various states may disturb the mind, or serve as a means to help us develop awareness. Pramana is correct perception or accurate understanding, based either on direct perception, correct inference or reliable testimony. Viparyaya is illusion or misperception. The classic example is thinking

8

that one sees a snake when it is actually a piece of rope. Vikalpa is delusion or imagination, thoughts based on fantasy or on words that do not correspond to reality. Nidra is sleep, which may be dreamless or dream-filled, conscious or unconscious. Smrtih is memory, which may be a source of learning and discrimination, or may keep us caught in nostalgia or regret.

Patterns of thought Identifying these different ways that the mind expresses itself helps us learn to recognize our habitual patterns of thought. So while yoga teaches us to cultivate a state of inner silence, it also asks us to look at the mental activity we are having so we can learn what is helpful and what is not. What thoughts bring happiness and peace, and what thoughts reinforce negativity and sorrow? We can look at a yoga asana (posture) through the lens of the five modifications of consciousness that Patanjali has named. When doing Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) smrtih or memory may help or hinder. If we are daydreaming about the movie we saw last night, memory is taking us away from the present moment and our focus on the pose. If we remember a correction we received in the pose and apply it to our action in the present, then memory can be a support to practice. Sleep or nidra is usually unconscious, although there are yogic practices through which one learns to be aware while dreaming. If the mind becomes dull and heavy in a pose, it is as if we are asleep. Yet after deep dreamless sleep, we feel refreshment and mental openness. This state can help us to do a Downward Facing Dog Pose in a state of calmness and repose. Sabdajnana is imagination based on words. Instead of stretching the

Balanced Living Magazine Winter 2010

BL1210_008YogaMat.indd 8

legs and arms in dog pose, we may find the mind engaged in a vivid scenario about what we are going to say to someone next time we meet. Instead, we can use the faculty of imagination and verbal skill to mentally repeat the instructions that help us do the pose well. Fully extend the legs. Draw the front thighs muscles up from the knee to the top thigh. Press the front thighs to the back thighs. Now thinking of words is helping rather than hindering.

Correct knowledge Pratyaksa is a mistaken notion while pramana is accurate knowledge. Perhaps we think our legs are straight in dog pose, but it is a misperception. The teacher or a photo tells us that our legs were, in reality, a little bent. That pramana, correct knowledge, gives us the opportunity to learn how to extend the legs completely. How do we know if they are straight? We develop our own perception, so we know the difference in feeling between straight and bent, and we rely on the feedback of our teachers. As we gain awareness of these five vrttis - memory, sleep, imagination, misunderstanding and correct understanding - we learn about ourselves and the way our minds work every day. The vrttis are generally considered various types of mental activity, but Sanskrit scholar Vyaas Houston defines them a bit differently. Rather than movement, fluctuation or modification of consciousness, Vyaas describes vrtti as definition or limitation. This opens up a new perspective on the meaning of this sutra. When we define something, we may put it into a box, making it simpler to decide whether to embrace, avoid or ignore it. For example, when we meet someone for the first time, we may

fairly quickly define them in all kinds of ways – wealthy or poor, brilliant or average, attractive or plain, friend or enemy. Often without being aware of it, we quickly categorize a new acquaintance in all kinds of subtle ways, which then determines how we relate to that person and interact with them. We may do the same thing with an unfamiliar experience, rather quickly defining what we like or dislike, instead of remaining in the moment with an open mind. Yoga is the restraint or curbing (nirodha) of the tendency to define, and therefore limit, our experience. The less we define it, that is, label or categorize it, the more open we are to experience the uniqueness of each moment as it is.

Mindfulness Yoga postures and breathing practices train us in mindfulness, which can then be applied at the more subtle level of our habitual thinking, inner attitudes, and unexamined labels and definitions. Deep relaxation in yoga teaches us to be quiet yet aware, attentive yet calm, and to slow down and finally silence the unending stream of thoughts. Learning about the various mental activities or citta-vrttis helps us recognize when we are caught in memory, half asleep, lost in our imaginations or incorrect in our perceptions. To observe ourselves at this level requires alert practice, and learning to silence thought completely, freeing us to be in the fullness of each moment as it is. BL

Waggin’Tails Creating Pawsitive Change for Your Pet

Recommended Reading – Natural Pet Care Guides By Kathryn Gaster Allen

O

f making many books there is no end” – or for that matter, there seems to be no end to websites, blogs or magazines either! While there is a seemingly never-ending amount of information available online, at times nothing can replace a real, tangible book. Those of us who care for dogs or cats can benefit by having some reference material on hand that doesn’t require access to the Internet. Below are a few recommendations to start your natural pet-care library. Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats, by Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., Ph.D. and Susan Hubble Pitcairn – This is probably one of the better known natural pet-care reference works, Dr. Pitcairn’s book covers just about every aspect of pet care – from choosing a healthy animal to handling emergencies – while emphasizing the role of proper nutrition. The book contains multiple chapters on nutrition and includes recipes for both canine and feline homemade diets. A detailed section on vaccinations is not to be missed for those of us who doubt the safety or necessity

www.balancedlivingmag.com

of yearly vaccines. The quick reference section also includes sources of natural pet products as well as a recommended reading list. Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs, by Don Hamilton, DVM. -- Dr. Hamilton is a conventionally trained veterinarian who tuned to homeopathy more than 20 years ago. Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword to this book and Dr. Hamilton’s preface is an excellent insight into what changed his outlook on conventional and alternative veterinary medicine. At close to 500 pages, Dr. Hamilton devotes the first chapter to introducing homeopathy to the everyday reader, giving the history and development of this sometimes still misunderstood methodology. The following chapter’s theme is the nature of disease, fascinating reading and relevant to our own health as humans. The rest of the book is arranged by body systems as well as by condition and also includes a section on vaccinations. A more “scholarly” work for those with a keen interest in homeopathy. The Country Vet’s Home Remedies for Dogs, by William D. Fortney, D.V.M. – This is is a slightly more readerfriendly volume. Interspersing his health advice, including homemade food recipes, with tales of his own

veterinary practice, reading Dr. Fortney’s book is like sitting down with a welleducated friend who just happens to be a veterinarian. This smaller tome is a fine introduction to natural pet care. Your Older Cat, by Susan Easterly – This book is a guide to nutrition and natural remedies for senior felines. Ms. Easterly, a columnist and contributing editor to Cat Fancy, has written an informative, easy-toread guide for anyone caring for an elderly cat. Covering the aging process itself, preventative care, holistic and alternative treatments and agerelated problems, the volume ends with a heart-touching chapter on the final goodbye all of us who live with companion animals inevitably must make. Truly a must-have in the feline fancier’s library. If you acquire any of these, or other pet-care publications, don’t wait to read them until your pet has

an issue, rather, get acquainted with the table of contents as well as the appendix immediately. In this way, should a health or behavior issue manifest itself, you’ll have a better idea of where to start looking for the answers. One thing all of these publications have in common is the same message from each author: although their books were written to be of assistance in caring for our companion animals, these volumes are no substitute for proper veterinary care. Kathryn “Kat” Gaster Allen is the owner of Gasterville Natural, a Cleveland-based pet care and consulting business. The Origins of Christmas Historically speaking, the end of the year is prime time for a holiday. By Christopher Cumo

T

he favorite holiday of children, Christmas is a time of gift giving, religious worship and feasts. We celebrate Christmas in the depths of winter, reminding ourselves that spring and the rebirth of life are not far away. During Christmas we reestablish ties with far-flung family and friends, inviting them into our homes and our hearts. Christmas is an ancient holiday, its origins 4,000 years in the past. The Romans celebrated the saturnalia, a festival to mark the winter solstice, the shortest day of year. The winter solstice occurs near December 25 and the Romans celebrated it because the days grew longer and, by spring, warmer after the solstice. The solstice presaged the rebirth of life and was celebrated in the god Saturn’s honor. The Romans chose to honor Saturn because he was the god of agriculture. Farming would resume in spring, whose approach the saturnalia marked.

The calends In January the Romans celebrated the calends, a festival that marked the triumph of life over death. The

saturnalia and calends, taken together marked the birthday of the sun and were occasions when singers and dancers, the mummers, wore costumes and traveled from house to house. From the mummers derive the tradition of Christmas caroling. The people of northern Europe also celebrated the winter solstice. Their festival was yuletide in honor of which people burned yule logs for 12 days. From this tradition derives the 12 days of Christmas. Yule means “wheel,” which the people of northern Europe chose as the symbol of the sun, whose worship was central to all festivals of the winter solstice. At yuletide revelers gave thanks to the sun god, Mithras, whose birthday was the winter solstice. Mithras was a Persian god whose worship was widespread in antiquity. To commemorate Mithras’ birth people lit candles. Some worshippers lit candles in evergreen trees, from which derives the origin of Christmas lights.

commemorate the coming of spring and the renewal of life. The Scandinavians decorated their trees with apples, precursors to Christmas ornaments. Evergreens were, the Scandinavians believed, the tree of the sun god, Baldor. Had Christmas originated in the tropics we might now decorate our houses with palm trees rather than evergreens. Another sacred plant was mistletoe, which people honored as a symbol of peace and love. The people of northern Europe believed that the act of kissing under mistletoe ensured that a couple would conceive a child. From Saint Nicholas, a bishop in Turkey known for generosity and kindness to children and the poor, derives Santa Claus. There is much speculation on

what time of year Jesus of Nazareth was actually born. Because the Bible offers no specific date for Jesus’ birth, the date of the nativity is up for debate. However, some experts tell us the presence of shepherds “keeping watch over their flock by night” [Luke, 2:8] suggests the birth may have actually occurred in the spring during “lambing,” the only time of year shepherds actually watched their flocks both day and night. In any case, in 350 AD, Pope Julius I selected December 25, with its many religious traditions, to commemorate Jesus’ birth, giving Christians their current holiday of Christmas. BL

Metaphysics is the means by which you can achieve self-mastery. Metaphysics is the means by which you can achieve self-mastery. Self-Mastery is the ultimate goal of the soul of all human kind. As we enter the New Age of Aquarius, Truths that have been hidden for centuries are being made available to all who heed the call. Rishis Institute is a New Age Center for the dissemination of the teaching of the highest Truths—including holistic methods for improving body, mind, soul, and spirit. Truth always has been and always will be, for it is God’s highest wisdom to help liberate the souls of this planet from all lack, limitation, and bondage. These courses are based upon the concept that there are seven major Departments of Life: Spiritual, Mental, Financial, Vocational, Personality, and Domestic. Every single thing that happens in your life—each and every event that you experience—falls under one of these departments. If you are having difficulty in your life in any of these departments, it is an indication that you are not experiencing the success and freedom you should because you have misused, or are misusing, these Sacred Spiritual Laws of Life. The courses at Rishis Institute reveal exactly what these Sacred Laws are, and they show you how to correct such conditions in your consciousness and your Ascension into Spiritual Consciousness.

Our courses teach you how to attain freedom and security of consciousness in all your Departments of Life. We show you precisely what needs to be done to affect change. The teachings are based on the gradual raising of mortal consciousness into Cosmic or Christ Consciousness—the accomplishment of this will gradually raise the consciousness of every human soul on the planet. It will bring them into their own Divine Fulfillment, including: health, happiness, harmony, love, peace, wealth, and success in all Departments of Life. We offer two kinds of courses: 1) A short eight week course of eight one-hour lessons that gives you a general overview of Metaphysics. And 2) an ongoing course of one-hour lessons that continues indefinitely, and that can extend for years, all according to your needs and desires.

Dreams Massage & BodyWorks MOST PEOPLE HAVE undoubtedly experienced a massage, but probably only at a spa or as a means of pampering at a fancy hotel. That’s fine for a select few, but such a “rubdown” is hardly the remedy for relieving pain in all parts of the body. It’s not always enough to enable the serious athlete, the weekend warrior or the individual hoping to return to work at full capacity to “get back into the game.” One person has decided to take her lifelong commitment to health and training into detailed and advanced techniques to help those suffering from pain and discomfort. athlete herself and one devoted to a body-building lifestyle for nearly 30 years, has opened the doors to such a healing process by way of her Dreams Massage and BodyWorks in Middleburg Heights. “My involvement in body building and boxing was just a way to give my training a purpose -- to have goals in validating my commitment to fitness.” There’s just something special about working with a professional whose experience in athletic competitions enables them to understand a client’s pain level and overall needs. It provides a confidence and comfort level unlike no other.

Shaw trained at the Ohio College of Massotherapy, graduating in 1998 with a two-year degree. The Paradox of Prosperity Wanting To Be Prosperous Will Lead You Towards Poverty By Peter Smith

W

hen we hear, “You can become prosperous just by doing this,” we all turn our heads to listen, wondering if we can discover the new secret to success. We listen for the last little gold nugget to put into our repertoire to have a piece of the “good life.” However, each time we attempt to become prosperous, to get a little closer to the “good life,” it eludes our grasp. For each step forward, the goal seems to move further and further away. Each time, something comes up (an unexpected expense, higher prices, etc.) that keeps us wanting more. We wonder what we are doing wrong. Why are we working harder than everyone else and still getting nowhere? We must be missing something. What is missing? What will pull everything together?

“What we think about and believe will expand.” This may sounds like the basis of “The Secret,” that our thoughts create our reality; if we have prosperous thoughts, we will become prosperous. However, it is not as easy as it sounds, because our conscious thoughts do not drive our reality; rather, our unconscious

thoughts drive our life because most of our thoughts are unconscious. Thus, we can say our mantras (positive affirmations) all we want. Yet, if we do not uncover and change the direction of our unconscious thoughts, our mantras are drowned out by the constant waves of these unconscious forces.

How to change How do we change our unconscious thoughts if we are not aware of them? We can start to become aware by understanding our motivation. If we say we want to be prosperous in order to avoid poverty, we can focus on prosperity all we want, yet, what we get is poverty. The paradox behind prosperity is the more we go after it, the more it will

elude our grasp. Even though our conscious thoughts are about wanting prosperity, our unconscious thoughts are about our current situation or what we are trying to avoid (being poor). In wanting to avoid poverty, you actually believe in and focus on poverty, and thus, poverty is what you get. The belief in prosperity and poverty is a dangerous mindset because to have one we also have the other. Prosperity comes from the Latin word “prosper,” meaning fortunate, or lucky. For some to be fortunate or lucky, others need to be unfortunate or unlucky, what we call poverty. Because of this duality, if we are in poverty, we want prosperity, and if we are prosperous, we fear poverty because someone can take our

prosperity away. It is a vicious cycle where winners can become losers in a blink of the eye just as people in poverty can become prosperous in a blink of an eye. If we are already prosperous, holding on tightly to our prosperity only reaffirms our focus on wanting prosperity mainly to avoid poverty. A want is based on what is missing. If nothing were missing, we would not want because we would have everything we needed already. We would be grateful for what we have. There would be no need to pursue or hold onto prosperity. What is often missing in our lives is security and happiness, and we often mistakenly believe that money is the solution thus starts our pursuit for prosperity.

In the moment There is a difference between enjoying our life today, and waiting for retirement to enjoy our life. When we enjoy our life in the moment, we stop focusing on what we do not have. We stop focusing on wanting more and enjoy what we have. When we want something, we focus on lack. We develop beliefs and attitudes that our lives are lacking, and when we believe that we are lacking internally, no external object or force will ever be able to fill that void. We will always want more. We may temporarily fulfill our

needs by buying a bigger house or a nicer car, but once that particular need is met, another will emerge until we realize we have what we need already. It may be hard to believe that we already have what we need or want. It’s not money or physical possessions that we truly want or need.

We all have emotional needs, but rather than looking to the outside world to meet those needs, we need to realize that we each have the power to fill those needs ourselves. What we truly want is what we think money or physical possessions can get us (e.g., more peace, more love, more self-esteem, etc.). We need to ask ourselves why we want what we want. We need to understand what is driving our desires. Most of the time, our wants are driven by emotional needs (e.g., to be loved, to be happy, to feel worthy, etc.). We all have emotional needs, but rather than looking to the outside world to meet those needs, we need to realize that we each have the power to fill those needs ourselves; in fact we are the

only ones who have the power to fill our inner needs. A feeling of self-worth can only come from understanding and loving oneself unconditionally. When we discover this, we can see that it is within us to feel loved, to be happy, to feel worth, etc. Thus, what we want is not really anything external like a new house or financial wealth, rather what we want is already within us. So instead of wanting something, we need to realize that what we want and need, we already have. When we realize what we have, we will receive more of it.

Moving from wanting prosperity to feeling abundant?

1 2 3 4

Gratitude – When we focus on what we have, we will open ourselves up to receive more of it. Give – When we give, we receive more by realizing what we already have. Discover – When we know what is behind what we want, we are more likely to get it. Trust – When we give up trying to change the outcome, we focus on the present, the here and now, knowing that we have and always will have everything we want and need. Final message: Let go. Wanting prosperity will always leave you wanting more. Focusing on the here and now, not on what will be or has been, will bring you more abundance.

Heavy Metals:

Not Just Loud Music

We need to be concerned about the toxic materials in our bodies. By Clifford Sonnie, M.D.

T

oxic metals are toxic minerals. They are also called heavy metals. We need to be concerned with them because they can wriggle their way into our body and take the place of good minerals. How do we get them? Our environment. We breathe, drink, and eat and therefore we are exposed. Lead was in the gas we used and the pencils we wrote with when we were kids. Mercury is in the fish we eat. Pollution has put both, with others, in the ground we walk on and in the air we breathe today. And this doesn’t even scratch the surface. Adding to this is the problem of good minerals mixing with toxic ones. For example mercury alone is toxic, pure and simple. Add it to zinc with a touch of silver (fillings) and it becomes many times more toxic. The heavy metals I am most concerned about are mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and arsenic. Mercury is from fillings, vaccines, and from the thermometers we used to break when we were kids. We even played with the mercury! Lead was in the gas and pencils we used and in the paint used on many homes. Cadmium is in car fumes and cigarettes. Arsenic

14

is in weather-proofed wood and aluminum is in many antacids, aluminum foil and the non-stick cookware we use. All are also in the soil that crops grow in and in the polluted air we breathe every day. Water tables have been contaminated for years and are still in use today. I can’t tell you how many children and young adults that have no cavities, have always lived in new homes, yet have lead and mercury in their bodies. You see, the problem is that once these metals are in you, the body has a short and very difficult time getting rid of them. Usually they are stored in the body and over time, the problems start. That is why they must be removed to prevent future health problems.

What does it cause? This list could go on forever. In no particular order: Neurological disorders, fatigue, depression, anger/anxiety, memory loss, thinking disorders, gut problems (both ends), joint , muscle pain and weakness, immune disorders resembling MS and ALS, cardiac problems, impotence, infertility and literally every other issue I have ever come across. So how do you know if you have heavy metals in your body? Well,

I can almost guarantee that every one of you out there has heavy metals.

Metals are minerals Ok, so how does it work? Remember I said that metals are minerals. Toxic metals will attach themselves in areas where “good’ minerals should be attached. If we don’t have an adequate diet with good minerals or if we are exposed over time to “bad” minerals (toxic or heavy metals), the toxic metals will attach. When this happens it causes whatever they attached to, to not to work properly. This includes, gut, brain, heart, and many other systems.

Balanced Living Magazine Winter 2010

analysis shows us all the minerals (both good and bad) and their concentrations. This is important for us to develop an effective detoxification plan. There is also a test in which you take a medication and your urine is tested over a 12-hour period. It is called a provocation test but again, only tests for metals that are easily retrievable and doesn’t really tell me how much is “deep down” and whether or not it is hurting you. We use a test called electro-dermal screening. To make a very long story short, it electrically tests for the metals. It does not test for amounts. It tests to see if the amount you have (and we all do) is enough to affect the body. If it is, we have to get it out.

Treatment I can almost guarantee that every one of you out there has heavy metals. The question is not; if you have them but do you have enough to cause a problem either now or down the road. But first a bit of science. I promise it won’t be that bad. When someone is exposed to toxic metals, they exist in the person’s blood stream for a short time. This can be a few hours to several days. The vast majority of the metal is then deposited in tissues and organs. There. Done with science and it didn’t hurt. Now to the tests. Blood tests test the blood. If you were recently exposed, then, yes the blood test can pick them up. The accuracy of the current tests can’t pick up any minute traces of the metals, but like I said, who cares. I know we all have some. I want to know if it is affecting you. \ Hair analysis will test for metals that have been in your system over the past few months. Again this is a short window but a hair

Now what about treatment. I’ve had a lot of people ask me, “if toxic metals take the place of ‘good’ minerals, then why can’t I just take a ton of ‘good’ minerals to displace the toxic metals”. Two problems. First the toxic metal won’t be displaced easily and as I am fond of saying, anything in excess is dangerous. If you’ve had a recent exposure and wish to remove the toxins or wish to be proactive, then oral preparations are fine. Chorella and cilantro are excellent herbals to use to detoxify the body. Vitamin C is also good. Infrared saunas and colonic hydrotherapy are also effective. All are fine preventive measures we all can do. The real issue is those toxic metals that have been in us for the last couple of months or more. To rid the body of those metals that are deep in us, other means have to be employed. DMSA is really effective to mobilize mercury and lead. EDTA, a type of amino acid, is given IV and is the most effective method to rid the body of heavy metals. IV www.balancedlivingmag.com

vitamin C is also effective and can be used along with the EDTA. As you can see, heavy metals are in all of us no matter what age and they are affecting every system in our body. Believe me not in a good way either. They can be removed and the results can be remarkable. But this is an area where you need to seek out someone who has been trained, certified and can offer various treatment regimen. Just don’t go buy the latest “detox” kit you see advertised on television or in a store, as you will be wasting your money and might possibly even hurt yourself. Instead, make sure you seek an MD or DO and also discuss this with your family physician. As always, the Balance of Life Clinic can help to clarify this issue, especially since this one of our main areas of interest. Remember, a smart health care consumer is informed and aware.

Spinal Health

A balanced spine is the key to healing your body. By Jamie Lober

T

he spine is more powerful than you may realize. “With a balanced spine, your body is able to heal itself and move better, and muscle coordination is easier,” says Dr. Emily Arnold of Cleveland Chiropractic. “Everyone does not naturally achieve this optimal state of spinal health. There is less muscle tension and spasms, which aides greater flexibility, increased range of motion, better mobility and increased opportunity to perform the activities of daily life,” If you have ever experienced a backache, you are not alone. “Eighty percent of people have some back trouble at some point in their life,” says Dr. Greg Kempf of Arcade Chiropractic Clinic. Lower

back pain is most common. “By not having the proper posture when you sit, you are not supporting your lower back,” explains Kempf. Back pain really can compromise your life. “Recurring episodes of pain or chronic pain are the most common reason for the inability to work or be active,” reveals Dr. Daniel Mazanec, medical spine specialist and associate director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Spine Health.

In your control Some aspects of spinal health are within your control. You can start with a simple exercise plan. “This should include cardiovascular, resistance, stretching and strengthening exercises along with toning,” says Arnold. This is part of balanced living. “If the core muscles that support your spine are weak or

too tight, they are not balanced or flexible enough and you are at greater risk for problems,” says Mazanec. Aerobics is a great way to strengthen and support your back. “People who are aerobically fit have fewer episodes and shorter episodes of back pain,” notes Mazanec. Understand how to maintain good posture. “You want an arched low back when you sit so your head is over your shoulders. That is the proper spinal position,” informs Kempf. There are consequences for those who sit in front of a computer all day, are overweight or stand with poor posture. “Situations of chronic, persistent poor posture can

cause muscle fatigue, strain on discs and joints and ultimately lead to back pain,” says Mazanec. Be conscious of your lifestyle choices. “You should have proper diet and water intake, a positive mental outlook and get regular sleep,” advises Arnold. Do not smoke. “Cigarette smoking is associated with accelerated degenerative

change and premature wear and tear in the discs and the spine. The belief is that the nicotine and smoke cause constriction of blood vessels that supply the blood supply to the discs,” says Mazanec. Try your best to refrain from unhealthy behavior.

What you cannot change Do what you can to be stress-free and accept the things you cannot change. “Muscles become tightened or tense related to emotional stress, tension or job stress, so doing relaxation exercises or techniques can reduce that tension and help with neck or upper back pain,” says Mazanec. If you experienced a problem that resolved itself, it is still advised to discover the underlying cause. “Even if you have recovered from an episode, he may be able to identify some of the muscular imbalances or other structural things,” says Mazanec. Remember that you need your spine to function. “It supports the weight of your body and musculoskeletal system. The spinal cord and all the nerves that emanate from it control most of your body’s functions like bladder function and strength in muscles of arms and legs,” reminds Mazanec. There are benefits to seeing a chiropractor. “It is helpful for pain, injuries and spasms, but also maintenance, wellness and relaxation,” says Arnold. There is no problem too unusual to be presented. “Many people have a modest difference in length of legs and that imbalance can sometimes be a factor in back pain, so the reason for an evaluation would be to look and see if there are things that can be corrected or addressed in a preventative sense,” explains Mazanec. Consider whether scheduling a visit is right for you. “I work with the Browns and Cavs and even just regular guys and women for preventative reasons. By regular adjustments and stretching, you are going to prevent more sprains and strains because without the adjustments, those joints tend to tighten up and do not have as much range of motion or flexibility,” shares Kempf. The monitoring by a chiropractor decreases the chance of injury through overuse as well. Recognize if you need immediate medical attention. “If pain is persisting, not improving or not relieved with rest at night, those are red flags that you need an evaluation,” says Mazanec. Sometimes back pain spreads, which is also important to identify. “If pain is originally in the back and then moves down one of the legs, it is called sciatica. That may imply that there is a pinched nerve in the back, and there is good medical treatment for that,” informs Mazanec.

percent or more of people should be treated without surgery. They should do exercise or make lifestyle changes,” says Mazanec. The chiropractor will do what he can to alleviate your discomfort. “There are a range of medications to provide symptom relief, but the goal of medicine is not to stay on it forever,” emphasizes Mazanec. There are other options as well. “Modalities like relaxation techniques, acupuncture, osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation or massage therapy can be used alone or in combination to get relief,” says Mazanec. Do not forget that a healthy spine means bal-

anced living. “The spine is in many ways like a tent pole. The ropes that hold the tent pole erect have to be balanced on the front and the back. That is why maintaining flexibility, balance and strength in the core muscles as well as aerobic fitness is an important part of spinal wellness,” says Mazanec. Remember to make spinal health a family effort by encouraging one another to maintain the most important balance in their life. BL

If its’ Broke...Then Fix It! Entertain the impact of alternative, more spiritual, approaches to dealing with life’s little errata. By Marlene Buffa

W

e’ve all heard the idiom, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This wise insight instructs us to stop imposing revisions on that which already functions sufficiently – no enhancements necessary. Like a woman whose natural beauty shines forth, altering the symmetry of her features in an attempt to mold her into something even more appealing, can result in a disastrous disfiguration. By trying to “fix,” we change the nature of the perfection of the perceived brokenness in our life, and often cause more damage and confusion in the process. Conversely, consider if something in your life IS broken – what then? While change and growth almost always ensure positive movement, entertain the impact of alternative, more spiritual, approaches to dealing with life’s little errata.

Ask it One of the first things we say when noticing something not working properly in life, “I wonder why that happened?” allows us to view a difficulty or flaw apart from the self. This question almost inevitably precludes the predictable answer,

“Everything happens for a reason,” and often leaves the effected party reminded of the mystery of God’s mechanics while befuddled by the misfiring of Spirit’s spark. As we mature, we realize time spent pondering the why and how of life detracts our energy from seeking and implementing alternatives. Its human nature to inquire -“why me,” “why now,” etc. “Why” always seems appropriate when a problem arises. Addressing the dynamic with a question (and naively expecting a response) fuels our illusion of control. Later, when newer and greater circumstances replace the broken issue, we realize the “why” served only to lead the way for better things to enter our lives.

Bless it With a new perspective placed on the “broken” in life, we realize that giving energy to the problem only magnifies it. Many spiritual teachers taught us that what we concentrate on, increases in our lives. Consequently, focusing on the condition of brokenness, serves only to embolden its pervasiveness. Consider then, blessing what appears as malfunctioning. Thank the circumstance for entering your life when and how it appeared, know-

ing that most lessons in life come to the masquerade gala we call life, brilliantly adorned as difficulties or problems. All the while, the true identity of the life-lesson hides beneath an exterior of pain or difficulty, waiting for us to unmask the morsel of wisdom hidden beneath. Opt instead to no longer struggle against problems since struggling bolsters the power of negativity. Instead, by blessing, our energy shifts to the seed-like lesson held within the presentation of brokenness, not fertilizing the pod of problems.

Leave it When faced with a problem focused on for so long the solution appears blurry, often the best remedy to break through the dam of new ideas surfaces when we take a break. Struggling, over-thinking and even regurgitating options that once worked but no longer apply, only serves to further dilemma. Constructive, and the ever-sought simple answer to one of life’s problems may find its way to your ah-ha moment of understanding when you step aside from your hold on the frenzy of frustration. Get up. Walk away. Take a breath. Separating and disconnecting from the energy surrounding the problem, frees us to see the problem operating with its own concentric waves of nuances, not tangled in a sea of self-fulfilling seaweed. By moving away from both the negative energy of the problem as well as the problem itself, we break the whirlpool that drains us of our capabilities to see a resolution in spite of the turmoil. So, surrender the need to find an immediate fix, and float on your raft of respite. Allow Spirit to drift you in the direction of new perspective.

Release it A problem arose in your life – something appeared broken and your compulsion to fix it usurped your sense of balance. Asking the rhetorical why and how of the problem

failed to generate any satisfaction. Blessing the spiritual impact of the fracture in your world, in spite of your resistance and the inconvenience it brought, left you empty and unfulfilled, with the problem still intact. Leaving the challenge, whether momentarily or even permanently, cast you adrift in the sea of the unknown. What’s left? You can train and spar and fight and punch your way until you’ve put the problem on the mat - knocked out but still breathing. You’ve not transformed yourself in the process. Your combat accom-

At its core, the nature of the difficulty remained stagnant. Nothing’s changed except your energy to engage in a fight. Trusting life and trusting God requires either a lot of focus and discipline, or none at all. This strange contradiction depends on your acceptance and willingness to know that Spirit takes care of the problem for you – in the best possible way. By releasing all the facets of the perceived problem as well as your attachment to it and need to fix it, requires great faith – or trust. You really don’t need to know how to fix it. You’re really not in control anyway. By setting free the problem, you transform and set yourself free. BL
