CHINESE BRIDE WOWS GROOM WITH HER GOWN CHOICE

This Chinese bride could give lessons on how to make your groom’s first vision of you in your wedding dress render him speechless! Li Kuo went to great lengths to impress her groom, Xie Tao. According to The Daily Mail, the bride ordered a stunning gown with a 520 metre-long train in secret, noting, “I wanted to give him a surprise and to make the wedding really special”. In their local dialect the numbers five, two and zero sound like ‘I Love You’, her reason for choosing that exact length of train. It took seamstresses in Beijing more than three months to create the gown, which weighed just under 50 kilos. Twenty young bridesmaids carried the train. The groom, who works in an art museum in Wuhan, China, must be no stranger to bold artistic statements but his first view of his bride in her gown had to be shockingly surprising. Mission accomplished, Li Kuo....but will your new husband be afraid whenever you tell him you’re going shopping for a new dress and want to surprise him with your choice?

TWO WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL What bride doesn’t spend hours and hours imagining myriad “what-if ” scenarios for her wedding day, trying to anticipate any possible glitches that could occur? No amount of pre-wedding planning could have prepared for a very sad happening at a recent wedding in Germany. Munich’s Merkur newspaper reported a tragic occurrence at a wedding in the historic St. Lambert Abbey Chapel at Seeon Monastery in Bavaria. The Benedictine Monastery was founded in 994 A.D. and has many claims to fame, including music composed by Mozart for the monastery. The Roman Catholic priest, who had been feeling unwell, suffered a heart attack and fell to the stone floor while delivering a prayer as he performed the wedding ceremony. He later died. Shocked participants gave first aid to the priest and comforted the distraught bride. Out of consideration for their guests who had travelled great distances to be in attendance, the couple decided to continue with the wedding in a different venue, a few hours later. Another priest stepped in to marry the German bride and her Italian groom in a nearby church at a ceremony that began with a prayer for the recently-departed priest.

ROSE PARADE FLOAT VENUE FOR I DOS Wedding bells rang in the 2013 New Year for Nicole Angelillo & Gerald Sapienza, the Virginia couple who won the Farmers Insurance first-ever Dream Wedding Contest. More than 52 million TV viewers watched the couple say “I Do” atop the Farmers Insurance “Love Float” in Pasadena, California during the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day. Imagine 900,000 spectators lining the parade route as the float, 25 feet tall, 55 feet long and 18 feet wide, decorated with about 16,000 roses and carnations, carried the happy couple into matrimony. Nicole had a crush on Gerald in high school but fate didn’t bring them together until a decade later. The couple entered the contest, supported by family, friends and community. Contest entries were narrowed down to four finalist couples and voting opened to the public via Facebook. The hearts of voters across the U.S. were captured by Nicole & Gerald’s love story and the rest of their wedding story is now truly history! PRESIDENT OBAMA, WEDDING VENUE CRASHER? From possible hysteria to history... Picture this. You have planned your event of a lifetime for months. The venue is Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa in the historic Flynn Barn built in 1871, a building on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places. It’s coming up to U.S. election day and to your surprise — and dismay — you learn that the barn area has been chosen for a last-minute reelection campaign rally by President Barack Obama. You’re getting worried because you have to consider the possibility of what might happen to your wedding plans, because the President’s morning event could run longer than expected and create problems if it overlaps with yours. This was the scenario facing Sayli and Jon Gibbs when they were scheduled to take their marriage vows. Happily, the rally ended in a timely fashion. However, the couple were advised the parking lot for the venue would be closed to cars, so the bride walked across the lot carrying her wedding gown. A gentlemanly gesture by the President included a memorable gift of a silver mint julep cup and tray, each with the presidential seal, along with a penned note offering best wishes to the bridal couple saying, “Congratulations on the wedding. Michelle and I wish you a great life together. Barack Obama.” This is a wedding story deserving to be passed down for generations to come.

PEAK EXPERIENCE ALMOST HEAVEN, WEST VIRGINIA Sometimes the road to the altar is a rocky one, but for Antonie Hodge and Bob Ewing, both experienced rock climbers, that was an understatement. The walk down the aisle was a difficult climb to the top of a peak in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia, a special place for this daring duo. Bob proposed to Antonie on a climb aptly called Ecstasy, before continuing to the peak where a few months later they would take their wedding vows. Making the climb more difficult was that the couple climbed in their wedding attire, undoubtedly the first time such a feat has taken place there. The way to the south peak summit is a great analogy for marriage; climbers must choose their own way and build their own anchors all the way. Antonie’s mother trained for the climb to witness her daughter, who climbed in mom’s wedding gown, getting married. Due to space and safety considerations only seven people participated in the summit ceremony; other family members and friends joined in by walkie-talkie and nuptial-gazed through telescopes. The weekend-long celebrations continued the next day with a second wedding ceremony at ground-level attended by 150 guests. Not only the bridal couple were starry-eyed — entertainment included the Perseid meteor shower, nature’s dazzling celestial light show that was at its peak that weekend. The happy groom told WE that “our wedding weekend was a perfect reflection of who we are as a couple. At first many of our guests were skeptical about spending a weekend in a remote section of the country that doesn’t have cell phone reception, but the beauty of the location and the varied activities led to everyone really enjoying themselves”. It’s no surprise that the couple are planning a honeymoon that includes rock climbing — this time in Europe. Angela & Trevor NEVER SAY NEVER TO FOREVER VOWS — A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY & A WHOLE LOT JAMAICA

efore these two met, fell in love and decided to take marriage vows, Angela Doucette and Trevor Grasby already shared something in common — a personal motto. Each had made a life decision, that they would never, ever marry. However, as lovers know, when Cupid’s aim is on target, everything changes. Before long, never, ever turned into celebrations for happily-everafter for this couple.

FACEBOOK & FACE-TO-FACE Friends of friends, Trevor met Angela at a surprise birthday party where both were guests. Doing some sleuthing later on a Facebook friends’ list, he found that girl he was looking for — Angela. He messaged, she responded, they dined, laughed together and discovered they had a lot in common.

ISLAND PROPOSAL The stunning islands of the Caribbean feature prominently in the lives of this duo. On a trip to the Turks and Caicos, they joined friends for dinner at Hemingway’s Restaurant on Providenciales Island. Trevor took Angela aside and proposed to her, holding an engagement ring in his hand. Angela relates that she “started to cry and said yes! Then I kissed him. Kissed him a lot!” Running back into the restaurant, still crying, she showed her girlfriend her ring and asked her to be her maid-of-honour. By then more friends from the island had arrived at the restaurant, in time to join in engagement celebrations that continued long into the night.

WHY A DESTINATION WEDDING? With a mutual love of the ocean and tropical islands it was an easy decision. The couple wanted to throw a big party and chose Jamaica because they had had such a good time there before. They knew the guests at their wedding would too. With more than 70 people coming to the wedding, Angela investigated various options before making the decision to go with Absolute Wedsite, one of the largest destination wedding and honeymoon organizations in North America. Among the possibilities were einvites and a personalized website. Their designated co-ordinator went above and beyond, even visiting the couple’s home, to help guide them through the process of making selections for their perfect destination wedding.

THE CEREMONY On a beautiful April day, in a gazebo overlooking the ocean in late afternoon, the never-ever couple took forever vows. The officiant asked guests to “be their village, be their family and always support and encourage them, as Angela and Trevor discover the commitment and dedication needed to make their marriage work”. Angela and Trevor both vowed “to look with joy down the path of our tomorrows, knowing we will take it together, side-by-side, handin-hand, heart-to-heart and always walk toward the light of our future”. The ceremony and reception at the Victorian-style Grand Bahia Principe Runaway Bay in Jamaica featured both Jamaican and country music. The couple’s first dance as husband and wife was to Amazed by Lonestar.

INTO THE NIGHT The Jamaica wedding was everything the bridal duo had envisaged. Angela’s gown flowed in the gentle island breezes. Trevor was “suitably island” in his choice of Tommy Bahama attire. Conch shells, tea lights and fans decorated the tables and the sunset was absolutely stunning. At the end of the reception, more than 100 sky lanterns were set aloft over the ocean, to everyone’s delight. The couple treasured celebrating this special life event with so many family and friends present, people that are so important to them.

THE HONEYMOON GOES ON Five days straight of rain didn’t dampen this couple’s spirits as they enjoyed their honeymoon at Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica. “Everywhere we went there were signs up saying ‘reserved for Mr. & Mrs. Grasby’ — what fun! And our butlers were simply the best.” Angela “loves that we can talk about anything and that every day we tell each other that we love each other”. Her groom adds that “we have so many things in common. No matter what we do, we always enjoy doing it together”. WE

Something Blue WHAT BRIDE HASN’T HEARD the lines “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe”, from a poem from the Victorian era? Including something blue on your wedding day is said to ensure love, good fortune and fidelity throughout your marriage. Whether you call it tradition or superstition doesn’t matter — for most brides, the meaning behind this saying is lost in history.

THE HISTORY In Biblical times the colour blue depicted fidelity and purity. A bride would send that signal by wearing an item of blue clothing or by a blue band circling the hemline of her dress. In Roman Empire days blue borders trimmed robes, to represent love, modesty and faithfulness. Before the 19th century, bridal gowns were often blue. Young brides wore blue ribbons in their hair to show their faithfulness. “Marry in blue, lover be true” was an old proverb.

SAY ‘I DO’ TO SOMETHING BLUE Today’s bride can be very creative when incorporating “something blue” on her big day. The road to romance for Melissa Enoae and Adam Bombini certainly challenged that saying.They met only a month before Adam was to leave to pursue studies in Los Angeles and neither of them was looking to be in a relationship just then. The chances of a lasting romance would have been labelled slim.

THEY MEET Melissa and Adam met unexpectedly on a casual evening when they were both out with mutual friends. They hit it off right away but their friends saw they needed an extra nudge to get things going. Shortly thereafter, the same friends set up a double date but misled Melissa and Adam by telling them that a group was meeting for dinner in Yorkville. The evening was beautiful and an after-dinner walk along Toronto’s Lakeshore seemed a perfect end to the outing. Suddenly the new acquaintances found themselves alone — their friends were nowhere to be seen — and Melissa and Adam burst into laughter upon realizing that they had been set up! Their first long conversation was followed by many more during the few weeks before Adam headed to California.

LONG-DISTANCE COURTSHIP The connection between the two wasn’t broken when they were thousands of miles apart. They found themselves constantly on the phone, e-mailing or on instant chat. When they look back on that time, they both appreciate the way they got to know each other in such a meaningful and well-grounded way.

a real-life wedding PROPOSAL — PLAN B An organized kind of guy, Adam had been planning his proposal move for a while. He had bought the ring but was waiting for an upcoming vacation to celebrate Melissa’s birthday in The Dominican Republic to execute his master plan of a romantic dinner-on-thebeach proposal. The week before Melissa and Adam were scheduled to jet to the island, she got the news that her good friend had just become engaged, on a beach in the Caribbean. Although he was dismayed that what he had in the works might now seem like a copycat proposal, Adam remained undaunted, scheduling their romantic dinner for the actual date of her birthday, to mislead his fiancée. Now picture the perfect moment: Melissa thought they were only going for dinner, but Adam took her hand and guided her towards the beach, leading her down a boardwalk lit with torches to a draped canopy filled with candlelight by the beautiful ocean. Suddenly there was an off-key moment. The personal DJ service Adam had set up had translated badly, and began playing “Here Comes the Bride” for the couple, thinking that they were on their honeymoon. Adam quickly substituted his iPod music with the DJ before Melissa noticed the gaffe. After dinner Adam excused himself again. Suddenly “their song” was playing in the background and he had come up behind her chair to place the ring in front of Melissa, whose recollection after that is faulty. “I was so shocked and overwhelmed that I don’t remember a lot more than Adam being down on one knee — but obviously I said yes!”

BASILICA CEREMONY Melissa and Adam wanted to marry in the breathtakingly-beautiful St. Paul’s Basilica in Toronto. Msgr. Brad Massman married the couple. They regard him as one of the kindest and most inspiring individuals they have ever met. His words had always resonated deeply with them. In an elegant ceremony, under soaring ceilings, surrounded by magnificent paintings and stained glass windows letting in natural light, the journey to the marriage altar was complete. Strains of “Pachelbel’s Canon in D”, performed by Duo d’Amore, enhanced Melissa’s walk down the aisle to meet Adam. Jeremiah Clarke’s “Trumpet Voluntary” sounded triumphantly as they made the return trip together, as wife and husband.

“On our wedding day we laughed when Melissa’s brother tore up the dance floor with his one-of-a-kind moves!” “We cried when we felt the overwhelming emotions as we expressed our gratitude and appreciation to our parents for their unbelievable kindness, support and generosity.” Melissa’s fondest memory was during the reception. “During a brief quiet interlude, Adam and I looked over the room and saw so many of the people that we love and care about celebrating our happiest day together. We simply embraced the moment.”

THE GOWNS The custom Ines Di Santo creation for Melissa featured a sweetheart strapless mermaid fit with dramatically full skirt. “I always knew I was going to have a dress from this designer, not only because her gowns are stunning works of art, but also because of the opportunity to collaborate with Ines to make my vision become reality. I love her sincerity, her passion for designing and the fact that she is so genuine.” The bridal attendants’ gowns, designed by Monique Lhullier, were very feminine, airy and whimsical. The soft lavender/mauve shade, accented by custom sashes flanked with crystal and pearl embellishments, added a subtle touch of colour.

DELECTABLE TREATS The array of wedding treats was spectacular. Dessert was decadent.... vanilla and raspberry ice cream crêpes alternating with mango and raspberry sorbet in a chocolate waffle basket. After an evening of dancing and celebrating, guests were fortified by latenight refreshments, including mini-burgers, crêpes suzette station options and chocolate fountain offerings. The spectacular five-tier wedding cake was not only gorgeous with its handmade flowers decorated with edible crystals and pearls, but also irresistibly delicious, by all accounts.

Adam’s fondest memory was when everyone went outside on the terrace for a surprise fireworks display. “This was a perfect moment for me with all our family and friends behind us and my wife in my arms, watching this visual masterpiece. Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ was playing in the background.” What Adam loves about Melissa: “I love that she’s a perfectionist. It comes out in every part of our lives, in our wedding, in her career, in our home — everything is done with such care. Besides being stunningly gorgeous, she has a heart of gold.” What Melissa loves about Adam: “He makes me feel so confident and I appreciate how much he supports making my dreams come true. He reminds me to keep myself healthy and strong; underneath all that masculine demeanor is a true nurturer. I love that he always makes me laugh, takes my worries away and is always there to be my very best friend. And he loves family so much; he is an amazing son, brother and a proud uncle.” Melissa’s advice to brides: “Don’t shy away from exactly what you want. Stay true to yourself and your vision. You will thank yourself later!” Adam’s advice to grooms: “Get involved and put in your opinion. Men tend to be very passive then complain about things they didn’t like or would have done differently.” Best piece of marriage advice they have been given: “Never go to bed angry. It helps us to remember to let go of the little things that are not important and will pass — things that are not worth being, or staying, upset about. Our parents passed this along to us.”

a real-life wedding RECEPTION NOTES Changing gears from the vintage Rolls-Royce used for the wedding, Melissa and Adam and their bridal party were chauffeured to the reception in a stretch Hummer limousine. Copper Creek Golf Club near Kleinburg was the spectacular setting where more than 300 guests celebrated with Melissa and Adam in grand style. The theme was Old Hollywood glamour, with a contemporary spin, all black and soft whites accented with crystals and pearls, with gentle splashes of colour in soft pink, mauve and lavender flowers. Accent lounge furniture, full draping around the walls and a monogrammed custom dance floor completed the ambiance. For these self-described “old souls”, a Frank Sinatra tribute artist and a band were vintage choices for dinner music. Guests also loved Adam’s father’s surprise gift to the couple, performances by Latin dancers throughout the dinner. The room was embellished with alternating centrepieces. Tall designs were created using soft white, mauve and lavender roses in full bloom; pearl and crystal elements added sparkle. One type of arrangement used votive candles atop mirrored bases to provide glow, while the other had hanging orchids and candles that were suspended in the middle of the centrepiece. The result of the art-like arrangements was gently-romantic grandeur. Dancing to “Love Is All Around” by The Troggs, Melissa and Adam only had eyes for each other. This touching reception highlight brought teardrops to many eyes throughout the room.

THE HONEYMOON The newlyweds had Bora Bora on their bucket list; they thought there could be no better time than their honeymoon to make that dream come true. “We wanted peace, serenity and relaxation. The beauty of Bora Bora with tropical landscapes and crystal-clear waters was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the amazing life event we had just celebrated.” Refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated, it was time for a more active “Honeymoon Act II” at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island in The Bahamas. Shall We DANCE?

GETTING YOUR HEAD AROUND WEDDING FIRST DANCES ance isn’t just about your feet — a lot of what happens on the dance floor starts way further north, in your head space. As you think about that wedding highlight, the first dance between wife and husband, already alarm bells might be sounding in your head. Perhaps you are very comfortable dancing but your partner — well, let’s just say he’d as soon walk across burning coals in bare feet as put his toes onto a dance floor. As the stars at your wedding reception, sitting it out simply isn’t an acceptable option. By planning and working ahead, your first dance will be as wildly-romantic and special as you want it, without undue angst. Start early with your lessons so that your body knows where it wants to move without even having to think about the steps involved. That way you can relax and enjoy what is arguably the romantic highlight of a wedding reception.

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD

FEAR OF DANCE Quite a number of factors come into play for some folks who “just say no” when it comes to dancing. Maybe two left feet really are the issue, and if they are, they can be trained to go where you want them to and when. Part of being human is a fear of being judged and found not to be up to standard. Those self-conscious feelings are magnified when it comes to a public display of ability, or lack thereof, such as your moves on a dance floor. Therefore, step one is to rethink your thinking. Reprogram your brain and make the default “can learn to dance”, replacing “no way I could ever do that”. Learning to dance involves learning skill sets that will stand you in good stead on the

Don’t look at dance lessons as just preparation for a dance or two at your wedding. The ability to dance well to various types of music is something partners share for a lifetime. You will be able to dance well throughout all your wedding celebrations, into your honeymoon and confidently into all the dances in your future together. Picture your fiftieth wedding anniversary celebrations, with the two of you still deeply in love as you move in unison across the dance floor to your favourite love song.

SET A REALISTIC GOAL Before purchasing a series of lessons, decide exactly what you want to accomplish. Do you want to learn some basic dances that you will be able to use not only for your first dance but also for other dances throughout the reception? Is your dream to do a choreographed dance? Set the dance bar at realistic heights. Don’t think you can learn something as intricate as dance sequences on “Dancing With The Stars”; their novices have a tremendous advantage because each one is teamed with a professional dancer who carries them through those complicated and demanding dance routines.

Of all the steps along the way to your first dance, this may be the most important one. Book consultations with two or three dance studios to find the one that works for you. Prepare a list of questions as your agenda. Lisa MacLaggan, owner of Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Yorkville and Etobicoke, strongly advises couples to ask very specific questions and be prepared to provide detailed information to help your dance consultant select the appropriate program for you. Here are some of Lisa’s must-talk-about points: • If you opt for a plan of say twenty lessons, can fifteen be used for the bride and groom and the remainder for father-andbride or groom-and-mom dances? • How flexible is the studio? Close to the wedding day, couples need a lot of latitude to be able to make everything happen. • What is the cancellation policy? • Will you be dancing to a DJ or live band? • Is the dance floor small or large? • What is the vantage point of the wedding guests? continued on page 44

• What is your level of commitment? Are you willing to put in the time to practice to make your dancing dream become reality? • What is the style of your wedding gown? A form-fitting gown will restrict certain movements, while bulky, heavy gowns present other complications.

DANCER COUPLE TIPS Ballroom dancing enthusiasts Annelore and David Jones have been tripping the light fantastic together for a couple of decades. They recommend starting your lessons “well ahead of the wedding so that ‘muscle memory’ can kick in. That will also give you time to build your confidence level. Consider a relatively slow dance for the first dance, because a quickstep or jive can take a lot of time to perfect. After you have your first dance music selected, practice at home many times, not just a few times at the dance studio. Leading up the reception, listen to the music often, either together or separately — the key is to be totally familiar with the music, the sequences it uses, and any changes in tempo. Remember, even a simple, well-done first dance will dazzle your guests, many of whom will just shuffle on the dance floor”.

1-2-3 & ENJOY Above all, enjoy taking dance lessons together. All the stress of wedding planning and the build-up to the celebrations takes its toll on a couple. As the day nears, all discussions tend to revolve around the wedding and all the details. Things can get extremely tense — just ask anyone who’s gone through the process. Take some advice from Jennifer Jones, Artistic Director of Joy of Dance Centre & Teachers College in Toronto. “Think of each lesson as a special date, away from all the stress. Have a fabulous, fun, romantic time together.” “This is a very rare opportunity for the bride to relax and let someone else be in control. For months she’s been the one in charge of all the planning but on the dance floor she can follow her groom’s lead and relax and trust where he is taking her. It can be a very empowering experience for her groom.” Let the dance force be with you! fter all the excitement of the wedding celebrations and perhaps jetting back from their honeymoon, most newlyweds hit their financial reality wall. When the financial rubber hits the road — or runway — so does the possibility of problems. Arguably one of the most important subjects throughout a marriage is money, yet it is a subject that is not often discussed in detail by engaged couples. There are great resources out there about money management, including Kevin O’Leary’s book Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women & Money; in it he stresses that couples must communicate about finances. Brian Shumak, President of Brian Shumak Financial Services, is an independent financial service advisor who has worked with newlyweds in the GTA for more than two decades. Observing how couples handle the topic of finances, he urges couples to discuss the following key points to clear the financial air and go into the “business” of marriage with eyes wide open.

set up a joint account. All household expenses are paid from the joint account with each partner contributing to it. The contribution can be proportionate to income or can be split equally. The benefit here is that each of you has your own money, a “slush” account. A drawback can be when an expense occurs that one person can afford and the other cannot, for example, a vacation. 2. You put everything into a joint account. Although you want to share everything, a good idea is to each set up a separate account to be your “slush” account. The difference between this option and option 1 is that in option 2 you arrange for an automatic transfer of X$$ to each “slush” account. In option 1 you transfer X$$ to the joint expense account. 3. You create some combination of the above options. There is no right or wrong way, only what works for you as a couple. The great thing about a “slush” account is that you each have money that can be used without justification.

BUDGET YOUR MONEY Managing money and budgeting money are two different things. Budgeting is like dieting — most times it doesn’t work because of inability to stick with it. Choose a budgeting system that works for you, such as the system outlined by Stephanie Holmes-Winton in her book Spent. The basic premise she proposes is figuring out how much you have to spend on something rather than telling you to give up something. This subtle difference allows you to become empowered, which helps you stay on track. One way of looking at this is that you are going into business together and as partners you need to discuss everything that affects that joint business, including how to protect each partner in case the business fails. In this case, that business is marriage. WE

Model homes, if available, are a great way to see the design and quality a particular builder offers. Be sure to ask which features and finishes are included in the purchase price and which are upgrades. Find out all that you can about the building company. Check out their website. Also visit the website of Tarion Warranty Corporation (tarion.com) to ensure that the builder is enrolled and to check on after-sales service. After-sales service is a key factor in determining a builder’s reputation. Take your purchase paperwork to a lawyer who specializes in real estate transactions. It helps to have a qualified specialist review this on your behalf and to advise you about your buying decision. Get pre-qualified for a mortgage — you could be pleasantly surprised at how much you can afford. Take your time deciding on your home purchase. Your new home is going to be your castle for the foreseeable future, and you want to be certain it meets your needs, not only right now but in the years ahead. Have fun! ans of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress will instantly recognize the charismatic fashion guru of Kleinfeld’s Bridal, Randy Fenoli, who has met thousands of brides during his career. He gives a wealth of advice in his book, It’s All About The Dress. The excerpts here give key advice from this bridal expert. Randy’s definition of the ‘right’ gown is “the gown you fall in love with. The gown that makes you cry and makes you glow! It’s the dress that tells the story of you and your fiancé. It’s the dress that will make you throw your shoulders back when you look in the mirror and say: ‘This is it!’”. Ask yourself a wide range of questions to figure out the specific details of your story. What is your personal style? What kind of music do you listen to? When you go out, what do you like to wear? What specific words best describe you? Your fiancé? How do you want your dress to make you feel and what do you want it to say to your guests? Do you want to look sexy, understated, modern, chic, traditional? With a few key words about her and her fiancé, maybe the type of silhouette she would like to wear, and maybe the amount she would like to spend, we begin to form a clear picture of the bride’s story. The fact is that any bride — even the most organized, even you — may get overwhelmed by the process of finding a wedding gown. Finding a gown is like finding a husband. Sometimes you fall in love with the first guy you meet; sometimes it’s the hundred-and-first guy. You never know what you might discover or fall in love with when you shop for a dress. Eight to twelve months before, begin shopping for your gown. In general it takes around six to eight months for a dress to be ordered and delivered to a salon. You will need

to work around that time frame, factoring the extra time you will need to find accessories and get alterations. Anytime you try on a new dress, consider these components separately and together.

SILHOUETTE The shape of the dress. The shape of the skirt helps define it.

FRONT NECKLINE The top of the bodice, which defines your upper body and helps to frame your face, neck, and shoulders.

BACK NECKLINE The back of the bodice, which defines your back, neck and shoulders.

BODICE The bodice defines your bust, waist, and hips.

WAISTLINE How a dress fits in relation to your natural waistline.

PETTICOAT OR CRINOLINE The fabric or foundation that’s used under a skirt to help hold its shape or silhouette.

ith the release of “The Great Gatsby” remake and the mega-popularity of TV series Downton Abbey, interest in the flamboyant 1920s is roaring once again, almost a century later. The flapper is the iconic image of that post-WWI, post-Edwardian era; she delights and captures our imagination. Historians note that the 1920s heralded the first time that youth was celebrated over age. Young women, dubbed “flappers”, broke

the mold. Some say the term refers to a young bird, almost ready to leave the nest and flapping its wings with gay abandon. After WWI ended, women were reluctant to relinquish the autonomy they had when, in the absence of fathers, husbands and brothers who fought in the war, they made their own decisions. It was the beginning of the modern woman, in the form of the vivaciously captivating flapper. Today we may be surprised to learn how much we have benefited from the audacious flappers of the Jazz Age. Before WWI, woman led a sheltered existence in many ways. The demure lady of the Edwardian era wore long skirts and voluminous pantaloons. Her long hair was worn up in complex styles. She had very little control over her life. When depicted, she looked down — unlike the flapper who openly, some said brazenly, looked straight ahead. The flapper took on life in the same way she addressed a camera — boldly, unflinchingly, head held high and straight on. Flappers voted, wore hair and dresses short, used makeup, smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol openly, danced and dated whomever they liked. Flappers cut their long hair short, in a bob, and enhanced their looks with makeup. Stars like Mary Pickford and Clara Bow used a lot of makeup during the black and white movie days; their supplier was Max Factor. In the 1920s the company made their cosmetics available to the public. Flappers embraced them: they rouged their cheeks, coloured their lips red

and used eye shadow, kohl and mascara. Jazz was the music of the era and was denounced in press and pulpit alike. Anne Shaw Faulkner’s article in the August 1921 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal titled “Does Jazz Put The Sin In Syncopation?” wrote that “a number of scientific men...declare that...very frequently those under the demoralizing influence of the persistent use of syncopation...are actually incapable of distinguishing between good and evil, right and wrong”. Dances like the Charleston, Black Bottom and Shimmy, very shocking to many of the older generation, became all the rage. Some dance invitations even specified there would be a “corset check room” available. Flappers threw out their pantaloons and heavy corsets and replaced them with stepin panties that allowed freedom of movement and comfort. Long skirts and sleeves were replaced by skirts just around the knee and sleeveless dresses. High heels completed the silhouette.

GATSBY ERA ELEMENTS Brides choosing to echo the 1920s Gatsby era in their celebrations have lots of inspiration when selecting elements from that vibrant age. Among them are: • Short hair in a bob cut, with finger waves, straight or with curls. • Matte finishes for makeup. Elements include bright red lips in a bow shape, showed to best advantage with a pout. Smokey eyes accented with dramatic eyelashes and varying amounts of blush complete the look. • Dresses with dropped waistlines with the skirt starting at the hip line. Think sleeveless, plunging backs and option of a low-cut neckline. • Gloves, long and tightly-fitting, to add glamour. • Headbands with sequins, beads and feathers or tightly-fitting cloche hats in materials from straw to ornately-beaded fabrics. Feather hairpieces or bandeaus with sequins, beadwork and feathers are also 1920s mood-appropriate. • Long necklaces of pearls or beads, often worn in layers for maximum effect. • Boyish silhouettes with a straight up-anddown look that minimizes breasts and ignores the waistline. • Adornment. Don’t be shy about using lace, sequins, beads, feathers and fringes.

1920s’ SLANG The flapper sub-culture even created its own sub-language, English sprinkled with liberal doses of slang. ontrol issues are an ongoing topic in this marriage! Saphia Khambalia and her groom Ivan Vujevic “bug each other about who gets to work around the coolest control room”. The control rooms that feature prominently in each of these newlyweds’ careers are very impressive contenders. CityNews fans recognize Saphia as the charismatic reporter they see on the news who is equally at home interviewing leading lights including President Bill Clinton and Aretha Franklin or youngsters walking down the street, shedding light on what’s happening in our world. Keeping Ontarians out of the dark is also the business of Ivan, her groom, one of the folks who manages and navigates Ontario’s power grid, including keeping the lights on for us all.

SUPERMARKET & WEDDING AISLES Saphia and Ivan met in the produce aisle of a grocery store. We’ve all seen a chick flick scene showing the electric spark when two strangers, reaching for the same melon, ignite the passion of love. For Saphia and Ivan it was a little different. Ivan worked in the produce section of the same store where new cashier Saphia registered a huge first impression. Years of friendship — Saphia describes Ivan as “her ‘rock’ the whole way along” — led to serious dating and from supermarket aisles to wedding aisles!

The duo took fun wedding photos in the fated produce aisles. Saphia muses that in the future when there are kids in the picture, they may take their first portraits there. Cool...!

A SNAP PROPOSAL It was a picture-perfect day at Bronte Provincial Park one fall day, all the brilliant Ontario fall colours at their best, when Saphia and Ivan went on a nature hike. Ivan put his Olympus SLR on a log, set it on automatic timer, approached Saphia and dropped to one knee, proposing just as the shutter went off. The pixie-dust moment when she said “yes” was captured forever. Perfect timing, Ivan!

TWO HERITAGES Saphia’s Indian/East African background and Ivan’s Croatian culture were both honoured in two separate, and very different, wedding ceremonies, a few weeks apart. The Indian wedding, comprising many age-old symbolic ceremonies, took place first. Saphia hadn’t grown up knowing much about Indian cultural traditions, so this was a fascinating experience for her as well as Ivan. One element involved Saphia’s mother holding a glass of sweet milk for the bride and groom to drink, symbolizing the way that in the way milk fortifies bones, the ceremony fortifies relationships. Later, Saphia and an uncle had to grab as many gold coins as they each could from a special pillow in one try. These were given to charity, representing the hope that in their married life, Ivan and Saphia would always have riches enough to share with others. For the traditional Muslim Nikaah ceremony, Saphia had henna designs on her hands and feet that included Ivan’s name. According to lore, the deeper the colour and the longer it lasts, the stronger is the love of the groom for his bride. The incorporation of the groom’s name harks back to the days when discovering where it was located in the intricate designs was an icebreaker for bridal couples whose marriage was arranged.

GOWNS GALORE & MORE For the Indian ceremony, Saphia wore her grandmother’s exquisite saree from her wedding 52 years prior. An ornate sherwani made Ivan look every inch an Indian prince. Saphia didn’t want to take off the gown she wore for the Croatian ceremony. “When else am I ever going to be able to wear a dress like that, wisps of flowing chiffon and a two-metre long train?” But she did take it off when she changed into her sleek and chic reception gown. She removed the belted train skirt after midnight, transforming it into a cocktail-length dress for “real dancing”.

CROATIAN CELEBRATIONS This was what they call their “big bash”. The Croatian wedding included pre-church celebrations at Ivan’s parents’ house with Croatian music and customs, such as boutonnières containing rosemary for good luck, while the bride and her friends were pampered at a salon, enjoying mimosas. The stunning Art Gallery of Hamilton was the reception venue that began with a champagne hour in the gardens. Dessert after the elegant dinner was decadent, a trio of petite Madagascar vanilla crème brûlée, chocolate mousse pâté and fresh berry compote. Guests penned best wishes into a children’s book that Saphia and Ivan plan to read to wee ones when they have children someday. A basket of pink and grey flip flops invited girls to kick off their heels and dance the night away. Ivan added his creative touch to a custom-designed photo booth that resembled a movie-première wall. Saphia tossed what looked like a traditional bridal bouquet, but in reality comprised twenty-four individual flowers, each with fun messages attached, so that every girl caught a bloom. In honour of Saphia’s maternal grandparents, who couldn’t attend the reception because of their diseases, Ivan and his bride made donations on their guests’ behalf to Parkinson Society and Alzheimer Society.

Heartfelt Moments

We laughed when “taking our pictures in the middle of the grocery store. All the staff we used to work with came to watch, clapping and then presenting us with a cake”. We all cried when “Ivan talked about his parents. A true immigrant story — leaving a war-torn land and coming to Canada for a better future — working two to three jobs at a time to give their kids a better life.” Saphia’s fondest memory: “Dancing with my husband during the reception. We only had eyes for each other. We danced all night ... salsa, traditional Croatian folk dances, fast songs, everything.”

hen her grandparents were able to attend both of Saphia Khambalia’s wedding ceremonies to Ivan Vujevic, these were especially-treasured experiences. Still deeply in love after more than fifty years together, her beloved namina and bapa are forced to live apart by the dictates of two debilitating diseases, her grandfather’s Parkinson’s disease and her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s disease. It’s important for family and friends to continue to involve and engage loved ones with health issues by including them in these joyous events. Perhaps they cannot attend all the wedding celebrations, but may be able to attend a part. Maybe attendance is no longer possible, but you could include them in a brief wedding photo session. Or take some reception treats, some wedding photos and videos and share memories of these important life occasions. Saphia & Ivan are inspired by the older duo’s deep and abiding love through good and challenging times, including fleeing politically-unstable Uganda in the 1970s. They honoured them in the Indian wedding ceremony by a traditional placing of a shawl around her grandfather as a symbol of respect. Saphia wore the beautifully elegant white saree with lavish silver embroidery that her grandmother wore 53 years ago on her wedding day. Through involvement with Alzheimer Society of Ontario and officially lending her voice and story to Parkinson Society Central & North Ontario as spokesperson, Saphia’s goal is to raise visibility and offer encouragement to everyone these diseases touch. Saphia asks people to help break down stigmas by “fighting back. Try to keep doing things by changing the way you do them. Continue living life to the utmost that you can”. Loved ones can help build up new walls of defence so that diseases like these cannot burglarize every element of lives. Saphia’s grandparents adapt with grace and dignity to ever-changing circumstances, providing inspiration to others. Her namina and bapa choose not to “sit it out” but to participate... an inspiring example of the strength of love.

Ivan’s fondest memory: “Watching Saphia walk up the aisle...she looked so amazing, so perfect. And the party!” What Saphia loves about Ivan: “He is my rock. He is honest, trustworthy, understanding and an old-school gentleman. His support is unfaltering and he makes me laugh. I feel so lucky to have him as my life partner!” What Ivan loves about Saphia: “Saphia is a firecracker. She’s brought tons of emotion and love to an traditional Balkan household. We love, we laugh and we live life to the fullest because of her.” Saphia’s advice to brides. “Enjoy the process. Remember it’s all about showcasing the love the two of you have together. Have fun, because if you two have fun, everyone else will too!” Ivan’s advice for grooms: “If you don’t always agree on certain things — no worries. We found the compromises ended up being way better in the end because they reflected both of our tastes.” The best piece of marriage advice they have is their personal relationship philosophy. “Don’t sweat the small stuff. And put each other first. We live in a me-me-me kind of world, so in our marriage it’s very important that we think about ourselves as a team. We’re working toward the same goals, the same end product. We’re here to help each other along the way. And we want to make it the most fun ride possible for each other while we’re at it!”

a real-life wedding HONEYMOON & TRAVEL Winding down after all the wedding planning was a delight on the laid-back Adriatic Coast of Croatia. The couple rented a car and drove up the beautiful, winding coastline, staying in little villas by the ocean. They later met ten aunts and uncles and 28 first cousins in Ivan’s family. For a pair who have camped out on the Serengeti, white water rafted on the mighty Nile, cliff-jumped in Mexico, danced during carnival in Rio and hiked through majestic Brazilian rainforests, a shared love of travel is bound to lead to new adventures. HAIRBRUSH MICROPHONE “As a little girl, I put on shows, using a hairbrush for a microphone. For me reporting isn’t a job, isn’t a career — it’s a passion. I feel so privileged to be trusted enough to tell peoples’ stories in such an intimate way. When I wake up I never know what I will be doing, where I will be going, who I am going to meet that day.”

THE ROAD TO THE BIG SMOKE When she volunteered in high school for the local paper and cable station, working behind the scenes, Saphia found “an incredible world opened up for me... I knew that this was it! And the great thing is, I still have that feeling”. Her journey has taken her on a circle tour, from a summer job at CityNews to reporting in Sudbury, shooting an independent film in East Africa, CBC videographer work in Windsor and, in 2010 helping host CBC coverage of the FIFA World Cup. She returned to City as a reporter for City and CityNews Channel.

Saphia’s view of handling her job is illuminating. “It’s heart-wrenching to be covering a murder, a horrific car accident, a fire or a bomb scare. But I never want to lose getting emotionally connected or become desensitized.” The ups are soul-soaring. Holding a newly-born baby whose mom just gave birth by the side of Highway 407. Looking into the eyes of someone just after being given a second chance at life by a Good Samaritan. From a distance of a few feet from a taut cable separating triumph from tragedy, watching Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls into history.

COPING SKILLS Saphia and Ivan have developed strategies to maintain their close relationship, given their high pressure careers. Saphia says they are “each other’s place separate from all going on in the world”. Being on constantly changing schedules, face time is a very precious commodity that Ivan describes as “our time to put each other, and our relationship, first”.

Wedding Flowers Tips By Caroline Estrella electing flowers for a wedding can be a daunting task or a wonderfully delightful treat. Here are a few pointers to help you enjoy the process.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Look at the flowers in bridal magazines, on the web, in books and even take a field trip through greenhouses and flower shops. Keep a file of photos of flowers you like and dislike. SET YOUR BUDGET. Be realistic and be honest so your florist can help you achieve your desired look for all your wedding flowers. BOOK EARLY. Wedding florists may only accept a certain number of bookings per day, so select your florist six months to a year before your wedding. PRIORITIZE. Choose your bridal gown first. Then select your bridal bouquet, which sets the scene for all other wedding flowers. The size of the bouquet should match the size of the dress. A large bouquet can overpower a short or formfitting gown. If you want to showcase a specific gown feature, be sure your bouquet wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cover it. Devote the appropriate care and budget in selecting the perfect bridal bouquet; it must complement your gown, flatter your figure and suit your personality. DECISIONS, DECISIONS. Do you want a round, formal bouquet, a trailing or cascade bouquet, a posy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; often hand-tied with ribbon, or a sheath or arm-held bouquet? One colour or many colours? A few large flowers or many small ones? Greenery? Ribbon? Accents like crystals or pearls? Keepsake mementos? RELAX, ENJOY. There is no right or wrong in your selection of flowers. CENTRE STAGE DATE TO RED CARPET WEDDING

rom their first date on, Melissa Natale and Eugenio Satino were in harmony. Meeting through mutual friends, Geno picked up Melissa in his car which was loaded with equipment for a rock band gig at Hard Rock. There was barely room for her with all the gear. When the music began, people in the packed room went crazy and Melissa was captivated, not only by the band’s repertoire, but by the handsome and talented guitar player, her date. She also struck a chord with him — he couldn’t take his eyes off the dark-haired beauty. After the gig they went to watch the planes land at the airport for the rest of the night, then saw the sun rise over the Toronto cityscape. They talked and talked and talked... and have been inseparable ever since.

VALENTINE’S DAY PROPOSAL Although the date was February 14, this seemed more like a trick-or-treat evening. After eight years together, when Geno took Melissa to their favourite restaurant for dinner on Valentine’s Day, she was convinced this was the evening he planned to propose. She was shaking with excitement as he pulled out a large ring box. Opening it to find a candy ring pop inside, she questioned him. “Is this supposed to be a joke?” Geno’s response was long and detailed, about how he was going to start saving for a ring, about how someday they would be married, etc. Meanwhile Melissa was thinking he should have started saving for the real thing for a long time already and was both disappointed and annoyed.

Walking back to the car by a different route than they took earlier, she wouldn’t hold hands with him and started walking faster, going on ahead of him. Geno called to her and when she turned, still very upset, there he was on one knee in a beautifully-lit parkette, saying, “here is the real thing”. She started crying, flooded with happiness. He had done such a great job of totally tricking her. Then it was back to the house to celebrate with family and friends who were waiting for them.

HEARTFELT HIGHLIGHTS Melissa’s childhood priest officiated at the wedding in the historic St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Wildfield, in Brampton. He has baptized, married and blessed many family celebrations over the years. For the bride, it was “extra special as the tradition continued on as he now marries our generation”. The talented mother-of-the-bride made Melissa’s brooch bouquet that included her vintage jewellery, as well as donations from relatives and friends, making it extra special and very personal. On the inside of her gown the bride stitched a monogram hankie that had belonged to her late great-grandmother, her “something old” tradition. Beside it was a tiny Cinderella’s slipper on a blue pillow, “something blue”. Geno wore his late grandfather’s ring for the wedding as a tribute.

We laughed when “the best man and ring bearer dropped the groom’s band in the church and had to run after it before it got to the heating vent in the floor”. We cried when “we saw each other for the first time at the church, as I was walking down the aisle to Geno”. Melissa’s fondest memory: “Dancing with my father to “The Way You Look Tonight”. Geno’s fondest memory: “Entering the hall with the DJ introducing us as husband and wife for the first time. What a rush having all of your closest friends and family scream, clap and cheer for you!” What she loves about him: “No matter what the situation, Geno always has a way of making things better. Just looking at him smile can make my day amazing.” What he loves about her: “I love Melissa’s sense of humour — she can always make me laugh. I love the way she cares for me. She makes me feel that I’m the most important person in the world. And she has amazing hair!” Melissa’s advice to brides: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I had a support system of great women helping me out. My mother and maid-of-honour were the foundation stones for my planning and my mother-in-law and my wedding party were strong supports. I am a very lucky girl. And be sure to let your groom have a say — men want their moment too!” Geno’s advice to grooms: “Ask your fiancée if there is anything you can do to remove some stress, but use some finesse, or you’ll be in trouble! Let your groomsmen make speeches if they want. One of the most entertaining moments at our reception was when my best friend made a heartfelt — and sometimes very funny — speech. People are still talking about it.” Best piece of marriage advice they have been given: “Never go to bed angry at each other”. It came from Melissa’s parents, happily married for almost 35 years.

RED CARPET MOMENTS Geno and Melissa describe themselves as a laid-back couple but they planned wedding celebrations that were the polar opposite, designed to capture the glitz and glamour of the Oscars, to enjoy that celebrity-for-a-day feeling. Melissa was every inch a movie star in her gown with form-fitting structured bodice flaring out into a skirt with a very large rosette floral motif of layered silk organza petals. A black satin and grosgrain belt accented her waist. The gown’s rosettes were the inspiration for the wedding’s theme, mimicked in decor, wedding cake and even in her mother's choice of dress. The bridal attendants were super-glamorous and very elegant in black, full-length strapless satin dresses with draped bodice, dropped waist and full-flare skirt, very much black-tie and suggesting movie star status.

HIGH NOTES Bona fide celebrity Barbie played a supporting role in the celebration. An avid collector of Barbie dolls since she was a little girl, Melissa had a pre-wedding photo taken in the room where her collection is displayed. Weeks before, friends and family planned a vintage Barbie shower for the bride-to-be, much enjoyed by all. Each of the custom-made rings echoed the partner’s band. Geno’s wedding ring was a white gold band with three layers of black sapphires while Melissa’s identical band featured white diamonds rather than sapphires.

RECEPTION ACCENTS The Grand Renaissance Room at Le Jardin was resplendent with décor in golds, creams, ivory, blushes and blacks, described by guests as “glamorous as the Oscars”. From the moment delighted family and friends sampled the martini bar — de rigueur at a red carpet reception — it was star time. Personalized touches added to the dazzling ambiance. Centrepieces that featured three-foot-high silver candelabra with diamond-like trim on hurricane glass votive holders made a wow statement. The trim was repeated around the bottom of each layer of a four-tier wedding cake that was a blooming rosette with cascading petals inspired by the bride’s gown. The groomsmen exchanged their ties worn at the wedding for bow ties for the reception. The guest book was a custom eye chart that guests signed, focusing on the bride’s career as an optician. On a custom-wrapped white dance floor with their names written in black, Melissa and Geno took to centre stage for their first dance as husband and wife to “All Of My Love” by Led Zeppelin. The late-night sweet table was dazzling, with its array of French and Italian pastries, fruit, cakes and other delectable treats, alongside a waffle and crêpe station. For those lacking a sweet tooth, a porchetta station offered savory temptations.

INTO THE FUTURE A honeymoon in Europe will be planned later, after the groom completes courses he is taking. In the meantime, Melissa and Geno continue to make beautiful music together in their relationship. WE

FOCUS: RURAL RUSTIC There was another male in Leanne’s life when she met her husband-to-be, Matthew Carella. Luckily Matthew isn’t the jealous type and when he got to know the other love-of-her-life, he took to him too.

Jake, a chesnut-coloured, mixed-breed horse, captured the young girl’s heart more than a decade ago. She had been riding since the age of nine. He was her first horse, an unplanned-for addition ending up with Leanne and her parents. She credits Jake with teaching her responsibility, patience and a touch of humility, all fine lessons to carry forward in marriage and life. It was only natural that the newlyweds, who were married at Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility, had photos taken on the farm where so many good times were shared with Jake. Leanne tells WE that “he is retired now, living the life of luxury that he deserves”. When the couple’s new baby arrives later this year, it’s a good guess that one of the first family members he meets will be Jake.

he wearing of a veil is one of the oldest wedding traditions, popular centuries before the appearance of the wedding gown. The bridal veil is iconic. For many women, wearing a veil is a once-in-alifetime experience. One of the most intensely emotional times for a bride-to-be is when she sees herself in a bridal veil, as she transforms from a woman in a beautiful white gown into a bride....a transcendent moment.

was actually for the groom's protection. By wearing the veil, his bride’s beautiful appearance was hidden from jealous and violent rivals who could kill the groom and steal his intended bride. Centuries ago, in arranged marriages, it was not unusual for the first glimpse of his bride to be when the groom lifted the veil, after the marriage vows had taken place. By that time it was too late for second thoughts — “no return once opened”!

HISTORY

SYMBOLISM

Some historians trace the origins of the veil to Roman times, when flame-coloured cloths were thought to deter evil spirits from abducting the bride. As a further precaution, families brought “decoy” young woman to the celebrations. Today’s bridesmaids must consider themselves lucky! Later, with Arab influences in Europe, including the return of the crusaders bringing customs and treasures from the east, the veil became a popular head-covering for women. It was equated with purity and modesty and if white, with virginity. That is why the custom was, until fairly recently, for only first-time brides to wear a veil. Another tidbit from history shows the veil

For centuries, when a groom lifted his bride’s veil, he symbolically took possession of her. A man “took a wife” and that a bride was “given away”. Modern brides often lift their own veils, a tacit statement of equality in the marriage relationship.

MULTIPLE CHOICES To veil or not to veil — that’s your first decision. Next, decide how long you want your veil to be. Will it be a whisper of fabric, or the focal point of your wedding attire, or something in between? Simply chic or embellished? Don’t worry about matching wedding gown details, just be sure that your veil complements your gown.

VEIL VERBIAGE If you’ve been shopping for a veil, you’ve already discovered that different terms are used by various designers for similar veils. These descriptions might help in your search. • A Cathedral Veil is a very long, formal veil that extends well beyond the train of the gown, ideally suited for an elegant wedding in a grand location. You will need to walk down a long aisle for this look and enlist at least one bridesmaid to arrange and manage the veil. • Chapel or Sweep Veils are full-length veils that drop right to the floor and even extend beyond the hem of the gown. This length is formal but very “walkable”. • Waltz Veils and Ballet Veils extend from just below the knee to just above the ankle and are very versatile. • Fountain, Cascading or Waterfall Veils include folds of different lengths to achieve fullness or they can be a single layer with cascading folds. • Fingertip Veils, Waist Veils, Elbow Veils and Shoulder Veils are named for their length, ranging from 46 inches to about 20 inches long. • Blusher Veils can be just long enough to cover a blushing bride’s face. Veil Vignettes hen media personality Star Jones wed Al Reynolds in 2004, she held the title of the bride with the longest veil at 27 feet, more than 2 feet longer than Diana’s veil when she married Prince Charles. Like other elements of Ms. Jones’ overthe-top wedding, which featured 60 bridal attendants, the veil was a stunner — encrusted with crystals and topped by a diamond tiara fashioned from a 19th century necklace. The couple didn’t hold the record for the longest marriage though, divorcing in 2008.

he record for the world’s longest bridal veil is for a veil worn by Elena de Angelis for her 2011 wedding to Ferdinand Pucci. The veil was 1.8 miles or 3 kilometres long. Six hundred people carried the veil through the streets of Naples as the bride, riding in an open top vintage car, travelled to the church. The veil included 3.7 miles of white silk and was 2 metres wide.

The woman had reportedly worn a niqab throughout their courtship which led the groom to tell the court that he was deceived and therefore was entitled to an immediate annulment.

he veil’s the thing...or at least it was for the cheeky wedding of Melanie and René Schachner in Feldkirchen, Austria. This was a stripped-down wedding for the bride and groom who choose minimal attire for their nuptials. According to reports including The Daily Mail, the bride wore a flesh-coloured thong and white high heels along with a knee-length sheer veil and the groom carried a top hat which was strategically placed for wedding photos. Guests were fully clothed for the register-office service and the reception that followed at a nearby castle. WE

choosing a blusher, be sure that when it is lifted for that breathtaking bridal kiss, it will sit back nicely. Other Drop Veils that also sit close to the head and fall over the face, can be of various lengths and shapes. • Birdcage Veils are small veils that may only partially cover the face. They can be worn at many different angles and manipulated to create fullness or worn close to the head. They can be worn alone or with feathers, flowers, bows or other embellishments. • Mantilla Veils originated in Spain, where women tend to wear them over high combs. Often trimmed in lace, here these singletier, non-gathered veils are worn flat to the head. They can be long or short and range from informal through extremely elegant.

TRENDS Traditional veils are making a strong comeback. Bridal experts cite the influence of the not-so-long ago marriage of Kate and William, with her wearing a mid-length silk tulle veil with a delicate lace edging of hand

embroidered flowers. One trend is to ultrasheer fabrics that let the beauty of the bride and her bridal gown shine through in silhouettes that are elegantly simple. Veils might be minimally gathered and worn back on the head. Circle veils with a blusher that can fall to mid-bodice and pulled back later are also making headway. & Salvatore STORYBOOK PROPOSAL TO OVER-THE-RAINBOW WEDDING

or Lorenza Manna and Salvatore Parisi, the first chapter of their romance began when they met at Lorenza’s sister’s wedding. At the rehearsal dinner, they were deep in conversation and very shortly after, deeply in love.

STORYBOOK PROPOSAL It had always been Lorenza’s dream to visit Prince Edward Island, setting of the Anne of Green Gables books. Whether Salvatore’s romantic proposal plans were inspired by a novel is uncertain, but one thing’s for sure, he knew exactly how to create a perfect proposal. He made arrangements to visit a secluded island near Cavendish. When Lorenza opened their picnic basket for lunch, she discovered a silver bullion wafer engraved “Lorenza, will you marry me?”.

THE GOWN & GARB In her career as a bridal consultant, the bride sees many bridal gowns. Her choice was a silk gown with a 19th century feel; she customized it by adding vintage lace. Lorenza chose two different pairs of wedge shoes for the celebrations and cowboy boots for rustic photos at Kurtz Orchards. Salvatore incorporated the other love of his life, his motorcycle, in his attire; his grey custom-made suit by Acapella Clothing featured a special lining, embellished with the Ducati logo.

THE CEREMONY A shared love of nature inspired Lorenza and Salvatore to have an outdooor wedding in a beautiful atmosphere at Gracewood Estates, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Ceremony music was by Nick Cuda, a guitarist they first heard play at their favourite restaurant, Crêpe Brasserie. He composed wedding songs for them and included “Over the Rainbow” in the repertoire, the bride’s down-the-aisle music. The couple exchanged custom-made rings: the bride’s was engraved with orange blossoms and elegant squares set with black diamonds; the groom’s was engraved with a single orange blossom and paisley designs, also accented with black diamonds.

THE RECEPTION A beautifully-decorated tent was the setting for the reception celebrations. Since this was a wine-region wedding, the couple chose local wines, a 2010 Cabernet Merlot and a 2011 Pinot Grigio from Pillitteri Estates Winery. Lorenza and Salvatore chose a not-so-common country song for their first dance, Timing is Everything sung by Garette Hedland in Country Strong.

THE SEQUEL The couple jetted to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon, enjoying thrilling new adventures. They explored with dune buggies, swam with dolphins and toured by mega truck, an experience that Lorenza found mega-scary because of the massive vehicle manoeuvring on very narrow roads.

On their wedding day they laughed when their family and friends gave their speeches. “We basically laughed the whole day because we were so completely and utterly happy.” What Lorenza loves about Salvatore: “I love that he is genuine, loyal, so trusting and completely honest. I also love that he is so family-oriented.” What Salvatore loves about Lorenza: “There are so many qualities that I love about Lorenza. She makes me smile and reminds me of how beautiful life is with her presence.” Lorenza’s advice to brides: “Take time to enjoy the day, look around, and savor the atmosphere.” Salvatore’s advice to grooms: “It’s actually life advice. I want to share that I’m still learning that every day is a learning session.” The best piece of marriage advice came from family and friends. “Try things together and show interest in your partner’s hobbies, thoughts and studies.” WE

LIPS DOS (AND SOME DON’TS) FOR KISSABLE MOMENTS By T.P. Black Smiling, kissable, provocatively pouting, exquisitely erogenous...LIPS....On her wedding day every bride wants to have perfect lips. On this day-of-a-lifetime her lips will be on display, and in action, throughout all the celebrations. From that all-important, intimate first kiss of bride and groom to luscious lips on display for wedding photographs and video, lips are front and centre. Treat lips with respect and plan ahead to make sure they are looking their best.

Lip Tips Lips’ outer and inner layers are much thinner than those in skin. While most of your skin has oil glands to moisturize, lips do not, so they tend to dry out and chap. THREE DON’TS. Don’t lick, pick or smoke if you want your lips to look their best. Never lick your lips; the enzymes in saliva will dry them out. Picking at dry lips makes things worse. Smoking reduces oxygen going to your lips, drying them out, aging them faster, creating fine lines around the mouth and adds nicotine stains. HYDRATE. Keep lips moisturized from the inside out by drinking at least eight, 8-10 oz. glasses of water each day.

HUMIDIFY. Canadian winters wreak havoc on lips, with frigid temperatures outside and dry air inside. Be sure the air in your bedroom has adequate humidity; use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

MOISTURIZE. Use quality lip balms or moisturizers to keep your lips well moisturized. Avoid balms with drying ingredients. Be sure to apply products before you go to bed for maximum benefit.

BE GENTLE. Whenever you are treating lips or applying lipstick or gloss, be very gentle so as not to damage those smoochers.

PROTECT. Unlike skin that contains more melanin, lips lack protection against UV rays. They can burn and, if subjected to injurious rays over time, can develop lip cancers. Use a good lip sunscreen and carry it with you.

EXFOLIATE. Remove dry, dead skin from your lips with a gentle exfoliation. Purchase a ready-made product or create your own. Among mix-it-yourself recipes is a mixture of equal parts of brown sugar, honey and olive oil or a paste of white sugar and honey. Apply to your lips and remove by wiping off very gently with a wet cloth in circular motions. Follow with a lip moisturizer or balm.

PLUMP. To create that sexy illusion of fuller lips, outline your lips with a lip liner a shade lighter than the lip colour you plan to use. EAT RIGHT. For great lips, eat a diet rich in anti-oxidants — think colourful vegetables and fruits. Omega-3 fatty acids are another key, so include fatty fish, walnuts, and plant oils like olive oil and flaxseed oil on your menu regularly.

Lip Syncs GOING GATSBY. Red lips are an iconic element of the Gatsby-era look. Picture cupid’s bow, bright, but not shiny. Daring and darling, matte crimson can have subtle undertones of orange through black cherry, for many different alluring looks. Practice a pretty pout to show bow lips to best advantage! AU NATUREL. The nude look for lips remains on trend. This is not as easy to achieve as one might imagine, so have fun experimenting with different products.This look can spell demure or sexy, depending on your attitude. PRETTY PINK. From shockingly pink through pastel pinks — pink, perfectly pretty pinks remain poised to set a bride’s lips aglow. Pink lips can be bold or bashful, soft or strong, girly or glam and gorgeous. LIP LOCKS The first kiss as a married couple is a highlight of the wedding ceremony. It can be a declaration of so many things — passion, love, friendship, tenderness, commitment. Everyone is watching closely — your parents and all your guests from nana to youngsters. It is being videographed and photographed “for the record” for all time. You’ve probably seen the virgin kiss video that went viral showing a couple having their very first lip lock at their wedding ceremony. The result was a bridal smooch that definitely would have been more appropriate behind closed doors. Embarrassing or what... PUCKER PREP It’s probably a good idea to have a chat ahead of time with your groom, not to choreograph that special moment, which should be delightfully spontaneous, but to make sure both of you know each other’s feelings. You may be fine with a passionate kiss in front of your parents; your groom might blush at very thought of more than a “peck” in front of his granny. “To dip” or “not to dip” could be another topic for discussion. ewlyweds Elizabeth and Andrew Douglas share a love of boating, so it was only natural to have wedding photos taken at The Oakville Club in Oakville Harbour. From the time she was a little girl, Elizabeth spent summer days in canoes and rowboats. Andrew enjoyed every summer at his family’s Muskoka cottage, which was water-access only. After the two met, Andrew taught Elizabeth how to drive a power boat and also took her on kayak tours around his island. Next up is learning to sail. Andrew’s interest in history is reflected in the choice of a vintage boat for photographs, so three of the great
