Seventeen-year-old James Peek - a funny, popular, athletic young man - confessed to his mom, late one evening 18 years ago, that he was tired of always feeling like he had to strive for perfection. Four months later, the Richmond Hill teen killed himself by suicide. A letter told his close-knit family of the pressure he felt in school, relationships, life. Before he ended his life, he had first completed his homework. What kind of hidden pressure, what kind of inner incessant drive, made him push himself so hard, struggle so unbearably? What stopped him from reaching out for help? These are questions that plague his family and his younger sister, Michelle, in particular. What burdens did he secretly carry, she wonders, and how many more of us, like James, yearn for space to be imperfect, to make mistakes and still feel worthy, to say "I need help" without shame or apology? For 17 years after James’ death, the family held a golf tournament in his memory. At the James Peek Memorial Golf Tournament, James’ parents spoke openly about the pain they were feeling, about the need for mental health, about the need to reach out and help. l See HOW page 18

York Region is undertaking two Schedule ‘C’ Environmental Assessment (EA) Studies of 16th Avenue to identify possible improvements for current and future transportation needs for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit users and motorists. Study A is between Yonge Street and Woodbine Avenue in the Town of Richmond Hill and the City of Markham. Study B is between Woodbine Avenue and York/Durham Line in the City of Markham. The recommendations for 16th Avenue include widening to six lanes for Transit/HOV lanes from Yonge Street to McCowan Road, additional cycling facilities from Yonge Street to Donald Cousens Parkway and paved shoulders from Donald Cousens Parkway to York/Durham Line. You are invited to attend one of the three scheduled open houses to comment on these recommendations. An evaluation of alternative designs, recommended design plans and overall impacts will be available at each open house. The project team will also be present to answer your questions. "If you write a song about being heartbroken, that song is meant to go out to someone who has had their heart broken and [help them] realize they are not alone," he said. "That you’re going through this thing together." That is something he strives to do during his performances. "In the end, if you can accomplish that, I think there’s a sense of relief that someone who might be going through something is not alone. There’s a comfort in that," he said. "That’s what music has meant to me all my life as a listener and that is something that I would love to be able to do for an audience when we play live." Local audiences will have the opportunity to experience that when Sutherland performs at the Flato Markham Theatre Nov. 4 as part of the 2017 Discovery Gala, which raises money for the theatre’s Discovery Program. Sutherland’s first country music album Down in a Hole was released August 2016. He co-wrote every song. As an actor, Sutherland has been helping tell stories on television and in movies, but he said telling his own stories through music is more personal. "Whether it was 24 or Lost Boys or Stand By Me, those are all characters. They were written and they really had nothing to do with me except I por-

While he wrote a number of songs, his intent was to record and send them to Sony or BMI for other artists. He worked on a few
songs with his friend Jude Cole, who liked what he heard and suggested Sutherland make a record. "Being so aware of the kind of trappings and cynicism of any actor doing music, I said no way," said Sutherland. "He took me out later that night and we had a couple drinks and, somehow, it sounded like a better idea." Sutherland said he en-
joys the recording process but it can’t compare to playing live. "When you start to hear that song take shape, that is an incredibly exciting moment," he said. "But for me personally, being able to play those songs live and being able to interact with an audience in that kind of immediate fashion has been the most exciting and challenging thing."
His Markham performance is part of his Not Enough Whisky tour. Sutherland is not new to York Region - he attended St. Andrew’s College for two years. "I just always loved that school, I got married at that school, it’s a place that I just hold very dear to my heart," he said. And he added he had a lot of great teachers, including his
music teacher. "He had an impact that was massive on my life." The Discovery Program at Markham Flato Theatre allows youth to access the theatre. Students in grades 1 to 3 can enjoy a show for free. Province should heed Justice Tulloch Ontario’s police watchdog needs more teeth. The Special Investigations Unit is a civilian agency that was established to maintain public confidence in Ontario’s police forces by providing independent investigations into serious injury, death or sexual assault allegation involving police. The unit is intended to provide transparency and accountability. Yet both seem to be lacking, raising questions about the efficacy of the provincial oversight unit. The onus is on individual police forces to notify the unit if there is a serious injury, death or sexual assault allegation. The SIU cannot invoke their mandate until they are contacted by police. It’s a system built on selfreporting. Self-reporting is only effective if there are incentives to co-operate. Currently, if police don’t call in the unit, there are no real consequences. That concern was brought to the fore when neither Durham nor Toronto called SIU after an alleged assault by an off-duty Toronto officer in Durham. It was only months later SIU was notified by the complainant’s lawyer. There can be no accountability if there is no reporting, and there is arguably insufficient motivation to report if there are no real penalties. The SIU becomes little more than a toothless watchdog if it cannot invoke its mandate. Meanwhile, when the unit is called in, the public is only made aware of about a quarter of the investigations. The SIU isn’t required to report to the public and only does so as a matter of policy, citing lack of resources for its dearth of public notifications. It’s difficult to claim transparency and build trust and confidence in policing if information is being withheld, regardless of the rationale. Justice needs to be seen to be done, and police forces must be held publicly accountable if there is to be any faith in the system. To do otherwise is to nullify the express purpose of the provincial unit and sow the seeds of doubt and suspicion. These problems, and many more, are addressed in Justice Michael Tulloch’s review of the SIU. His report includes 129 recommendations to improve police oversight in Ontario. This includes a recommendation the law require the unit to report to the public on every investigation and more precise requirements regarding notifying SIU. Former SIU director Ian Scott says if Tulloch’s recommendations are implemented it would make the Ontario unit the most transparent and accountable in the world. That’s a goal worth striving to achieve. With the recommendations already on the table, we just need the political will to make our system truly accountable, transparent and independent.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Overwhelmed by support after story Re: 20 Years A Prisoner: Thornhill Woman Shares Struggle With Anorexia, Aug. 6. I am completely overwhelmed with the amount of encouragement and love I have received after having my story published. Friends from public school, high school, university, and even strangers from across the world have reached out to commend me for being the voice for eating disorders. Numerous people shared their personal struggles looking for someone that would understand how they feel and what they think, and even asking for words of wisdom. This illness is very isolating so it is important to
know that you have someone there when you need to talk, to listen, or just to vent. There is so little help in the health-care system that I have made it my personal mission to make my own recovery team. It consists of me, myself, and I. All of the information I have been given, the minimal treatment I have had, are all tools that I am using to get well and to live my life again. I will use this negative disease and turn it into something positive. I will continue to be a voice. I will be sharing my story at a future event within the community. Day care not only option for parents Re: Daycare Dilemma, Aug. 17. I am not sure why so many people assume that children should be in child care while both their parents are in the workforce full-time. My husband and I have chosen a different option. I was able to stay home with my children while they were infants and toddlers. Grandparents helped with child care when it was needed. Now that our children are all in school, I still choose to work only parttime so I can be home when they come home from
school. Although it makes finances challenging, we feel it is important to have lots of family time. All too soon they will be grown up. I understand that many households are financially unable to choose this option. However, has anyone ever asked them if, given a choice and the financial ability to do so, they would prefer to be at work or at home while their children are growing up? Our government seems to assume every mother wants to work and is sacrificing her career to have children. Perhaps more parents would rather sacrifice their careers, for a time, in order to have the option to raise and care for their children themselves. Does the government even consider that choice? I’m sure I’ve mentioned before in the ads that a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was a vegetarian for most of my childhood. Actually, vegetarian may be a bit of a misnomer as veggies never factored heavily into my diet. Thanksgiving, usually a family gettogether highlighted with culinary excesses and unbridled gluttony, would consist of a bowl of Mini Wheats for me. We’re not featuring any cereals this year, but I thought it important to point out the can’t miss items to ensure the best feasting possible. We’ll start out with our Turkey Gravy, in my opinion the best part of the Thanksgiving spread. The turkey itself is great, but it and the mashed are merely a vessel for gravy. Just put this on the stovetop over low heat, add the drippings from your roasted bird and proceed to drown your plate. We have a gluten-free gravy, as well. Secondly, you can’t miss out on our Sage and Onion Stuffing. We get in loaves of Italian bread by the skid at least twice a week leading up to Thanksgiving and they all go to make this stuffing. It’s ultra-moist, ultra-tasty, ultra-old school. We also make a gluten-free variety if you are so inclined. Next up, my grandmother Doreen’s Cranberry Sauce. Some people only enjoy this a few times a year with a turkey dinner. This is an essential at my house for chicken, turkey pot pie, pork, you name it. Really simple, we cook down cranberries with orange zest to the right consistency and add a splash of brandy. Best enjoyed in abundance. If you go the ham route, I’ve already mentioned our Mustard Sauce. It’s creamy with a nice zing and really elevates our beloved ham to new heights. We’ve got you covered for sides, too! We’ve taken all the tedious labour out of making Scalloped Potatoes by making them for you. They come in three sizes, a 4x5, an 8x5 and a family size. We also have Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potato Puff and my favourite, our Turnip Puff. Being able to pop these in the oven while your bird roasts can be a real life saver when you’ve already got a lot going on in the kitchen. In terms of produce, we’ve got our curtain call for local goodies. We’ll save you the trouble of peeling your Turnip and Butternut Squash and will have them pre-cut for you in matchsticks. This week is all the exercise my forearms need for the whole year as it’s a massive job. Brussel Sprouts are tender and amazing, our Cauliflower is excellent, and we should have the beautiful purple and orange heads as well. Local Green Beans, French Beans, you name it. And it feels weird proclaiming the virtues of a commodity like the Potato, but we switched to a new potato farmer this year and the Yukons have been out of this world. They are massive, as creamy as anything and you’re hard-pressed to find a single imperfection in a whole case. Exciting stuff indeed! Happy Thanksgiving!

Where else would we start when we’re talking Thanksgiving specials? Last year we had a small crisis, the family farm that we’d dealt with since our inception over thirty years ago closed its doors. Many of our customers who have moved far away still make the pilgrimage back to town to pick up a Village Grocer bird for the holiday, as we’ve developed a reputation for having the best birds around. So after contacting pretty well every turkey farm in the province, we finally found a farmer and producer in Palmerston, Ontario (north of Stratford) that produced the closest to the quality we’ve all become accustomed to. Here’s the criteria we were looking for: 1) A truly free-range farm where birds are fed on a diet of grain and corn, no forced feeding whatsoever, and 2) A gentler de-feathering process which leaves more flavour (and the occasional feather) on the bird. We debuted these for Easter this year and received excellent feedback, so all our homework has paid off. We assure you, these are the only birds worthy of your Thanksgiving smorgasbord! When I stopped being a lazy bum and finally got around to getting my driver’s licence at the ripe age of twentythree, the old family Volvo fell to me with its iconic “EAT HAM” plates. Like it or not, I became Unionville’s de facto ambassador for all things pork. So here’s the story behind our ham. Once a staple, ham has been by and large relegated to a heavily-processed and watery $1.99/lb supermarket protein, devoid of texture and flavour. We make our hams from scratch, the good ol’ fashioned way and the attention to detail shines through in every mouthful. Most supermarket hams go through a process called tumbling, where they’re put into a giant machine resembling a dryer that has the opposite effect, adding a ton of water weight to the roast and also ‘gluing’ (for lack of a better word) all the bits of pork trim back into it. This is why you see “proteinadded” on the label. This is good for the manufacturer as it increases their yield, but not for you because it takes out all the tenderness, texture and flavour that made ham popular in the first place. Udderly gone: Markham cow sculpture on stilts to be remoooved from crescent TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com Markham councillors are kowtowing to Charity Crescent residents and will relocate the city’s controversial cow sculpture on stilts. Just when ’Charity,’ the stainless-steel cow that stands 25 feet in the air, will be on the move is not yet known, but it was made clear by resident after resident that the sculpture was "good art in a bad location," at a development services committee meeting Monday. Danny Da Silva, who lives on Charity Crescent, said "this is a monument that peers into homes leaving residents powerless to avoid the gaze of the on-looking cow. This is an invasion of our privacy. We have no place to hide," he said of the imposing statue. Vic Lam, who lives right across from the statue,
showed councillors photos he said indicate the cow is just 40 feet away from his windows. "I have 13 windows that face the front of the house. The cow is terrifyingly close," he said to titters from the audience. "It’s at eye level and it’s just absurd," he said. Councillors, by and large, agreed with residents that the sculpture simply doesn’t belong on Charity Crescent and suggested another location needs to be found somewhere in Markham. "We voted to remove it, to find a location, to come back in October, to get a report and to have a relocated place by 2017," said Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong. The suggestion was Cathedraltown would be ideal for Charity, given its connection to the Roman family, which developed the community. Cathedraltown-area
councillor Alan Ho, admitted to "dropping the ball" when council approved the sculpture’s acceptance from donor Helen Roman-Barber for Charity Crescent in June 2016. Ho referenced the fact that twice before the city’s public art advisory committee had rejected the piece, even though it had been approved by the Varley art acquisition committee in-principle with reservations. It’s clear the city will be on the hook for removal and relocation costs. No discussions of those costs came up at Monday’s meeting. Roman-Barber has been asked about moving or removing the sculpture and has said no in the past, but city staff are going to approach her about an alternate location one more time and report back in time for Markham’s Oct. 17 council meeting.

NAMING A GUARDIAN WHO WILL RAISE YOUR CHILDREN IF TRAGEDY STRIKES? The Wills Lawyer The following story is from the book “Where There’s An Inheritance”, written by Les Kotzer and Barry Fish. Rebecca and Kevin had two children aged six and eight at the time they made their wills. They decided to name Rebecca’s sister, Pamela and her husband, Herb, as guardians of their children. Rebecca and Kevin trusted Pamela and Herb to the ends of the earth. Less than a year after making their wills and appointing Pamela and Herb as their guardians, an accident claimed the lives of both Rebecca and Kevin. The provisions of their wills now meant that Pamela and Herb were to be guardians of the two young Michelle Kotzer children. As devastating as the loss of their parents was for these two children, there was even more bad news in store for them. A few months after the two children had settled in to live with Pamela and Herb, Pamela caught Herb having an extramarital affair. Now a nasty divorce was placing the children of Rebecca and Kevin right in the heat of the battle between their aunt and their uncle. Herb unexpectedly raised the stakes in his negotiations with Pamela by claiming custody of Rebecca and Kevin’s children. The fight was bitter. Pamela and Herb had no children of their own, and Pamela accused Herb of using his young niece and nephew as pawns in his battle to extort a better settlement from her. For months, the children seemed to be at risk of having to move out from their aunt Pamela’s home. Pamela ultimately obtained custody of her niece and nephew, but the divorce was both expensive and stressful. If only Rebecca and Kevin had named Pamela as sole guardian, and had not mentioned Herb, Pamela’s little niece and nephew would have been spared a great deal of the pain and suffering they had to endure. To Pamela, it was clear that, if her sister Rebecca could have seen how Herb had abused her trust, and used her two young children as pawns, she would have been horrified. In my wills practice, I see many couples with young children. The discussion of who to appoint as guardian in case both spouses are killed in an accident, is a difficult one. As I once mentioned in a previous article, I do not know how parents with young children can sleep at night without a will appointing a guardian. The person you appoint as guardian will raise your children until they reach the age of 18. Deciding who to appoint as guardian of your children if you pass away is a difficult task, and you should give great thought as to who you are appointing. As the story above illustrates, if for example, you are appointing your sister as guardian, it may be prudent to only appoint her and not her husband. Alternatively, if you are appointing your brother, the same thinking applies. Moreover, some people name the same person as both executor and guardian in their wills. This combination could lead to a potential conflict of interest. It may be prudent to appoint a different guardian than executor in your will. By separating your guardian from your executor, you are establishing checks and balances within the administration of your estate. It is important to remember that the guardian you have named in your will may not accept his or her appointment as guardian once you have passed away. It is important to tell your proposed guardian of your intention to appoint him or her in your will. You should also consider appointing a back-up guardian in the event your primary guardian does not accept the appointment when you pass away. The 173 annual event runs from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 and will feature four days of entertainment, food, rides, shows, vendors, exhibitions and more. "It’s just about enjoying time with your family, learning about agriculture, visiting the animals, seeing the thrill shows," said Tom Jones, general manager of the fair. "And of course, the famous food and the midway." One of the big attractions this year will include the live performances by the James Barker Band and opener Leah Daniels. They will be performing on Sept. 30 beginning at 8 p.m. at Crow’s Corral. Tickets are $40, which includes a four-day adult admission ticket to the fair.
This event is 19 plus, but there are still things to do for younger visitors. Fans of Paw Patrol will be excited when Chase and Marshall stop by Horse Drive for a meet and greet on Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other highlights include some of the traditional events Markham Fair visitors enjoy. "Our main attractions have been the rodeo. Monster trucks have always been a big hit," said Jones. For those who like engines, dirt and tires, there will be a demolition derby, a truck and tractor pull and a garden tractor pull. Little ones can get a turn during the children’s peddle tractor pull. They raised half a million that way and they are proud to have made a difference. But something was bothering Michelle. The pressure to be perfect was everywhere - in mainstream media, on the internet, scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, the steady stream of photoshopped images of happiness, the needy search for "likes." Perfectionism is a silent epidemic, she says. It’s linked to everything from motherhood to masculinity. It leads to silence, disengagement and isolation. It is a component of addiction, depression, anxiety. And it’s time, she says, to let it go. Michelle was 16 at the time of the first James Peek Memorial Golf tournament. Now, 33, she has completed a PhD dissertation about love and belonging and "what it means to exist alongside one another". She has also created a short film, in honour of her brother, called F--- Perfect. "This film is intensely personal for me; shame comes in many forms, and mine happens to stem from a struggle with perfectionism. Perfectionism is also, in some ways, part of what lay claim to my brother’s life. To me, perfectionism is death." Creativity, on the other hand, is life - full of failure and risk and vulnerability, as well as hope, discovery and joy. Michelle says shame is often what stops us from ac-
cessing our creative selves and from reaching out. "It occurred to me, how beautiful it would be if there were more art and less shame in the world? And how might this contribute to mental well-being?" The idea gave birth to a new initiative her family has embraced called Art Not Shame, co-founded with Liz Jackson and Jamie Ashforth. Last year was the 17th year for the golf tournament, several big donors each gave $17,000. James was 17, his hockey number was 17. It’s been a good, long run, the Peek siblings agree, and it has been part of their lives longer than it hasn’t been. Each year James’ parents addressed the crowd, sharing their pain with others in a way that James could not, and in a way that offered comfort to others. As successful as it was, it seemed an appropriate time to wrap it up - and replace it with this new initiative they hope will reach a wider demographic. The first Art Not Shame workshop will be a pilot run through the CMHA-York and South Simcoe and will provide youth with artmaking workshops - vetted and supervised by mental health professionals - in schools and community health programs. Artists-facilitators will lead participants through collaborative art-making and storytelling workshops in a supportive community. Co-founder Liz Jackson, a teacher and researcher,
YOUTH AT RISK Youth are among the highest risk populations for suicide, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). It accounts for 24 per cent of all deaths among 15- to 24-year-olds in Canada. Suicide is the second leading cause of death (after motor vehicle accidents) for Canadians between the ages of 10 and 24. The CMHA suggests this high risk may be linked to the challenging times of change during adolescence, when youth transition to adulthood and feel pressure to succeed. At the same time, teens may lack the life experience to know that difficult situations will not last forever, and stigma, guilt or shame makes them reluctant to discuss their struggles or seek the help they need. "What just kills me is that James’ death was like one giant apology for existing," Michelle adds, "like, ’Sorry for being here, sorry for not being good enough.’" Art Not Shame, she hopes, will give permission to others - the permission that James was lacking for himself - to express themselves and celebrate without judgment, to be themselves and to be loved.

Gatzios assured everybody Monday night that it was the developer’s intention to continue to work with residents, staff and council. "The owner isn’t interested in proceeding to an OMB hearing. The owner is interested ... in letting us come up with a set of plans that everyone can be comfortable with and support." The next step is for the revised plan to be sent out to all interested bodies like the Toronto Region Conservation Authority, the Region of York and others for comments and approvals and for it to come back to staff and committee for a meeting later this fall.

The massive York Downs development has a new look, but not new enough for some unhappy residents along 16th Avenue. At the fourth and final subcommittee meeting about the development Monday night, the developer presented a thoroughly revised plan. Maria Gatzios, consultant for developer Sixteenth Land Holdings, described a number of revisions to the plan including the provision of more trees, ponds, trails, movement of townhouses into the centre of the development and more. But what hasn’t changed is what really irked several in the audience. That was a large mixedused, commercial area right along 16th Avenue that could tower up to sixstoreys (20 metres) high and, neighbours across the avenue believe, will overlook their residential properties. Richard Herrold was outspoken in his anger at what he believes is the developer’s intransigence on the 16th Avenue issue.
"Do not deprive the people . of their privacy, of the value of their homes," Herrold said. "Three storeys isn’t enough to reduce it to, it’s got to be one storey or nothing or a green space," he said. Herrold said he believed the building of the development, especially the installation of the mixed-use area along 16th Avenue, would amount to a "transfer of wealth and savings" to the developer from the homeowners across the street on 16th Avenue of several hundred thousand dollars in lost property values. Put it (the mixed-use area) in the middle of the development, not along 16th Avenue, said Herrold. "I agree," piped in Ward 3 Coun. Don Hamilton who added he wouldn’t vote for the York Downs development unless that happened. Gatzios, asked about Herrold’s comments, said it wasn’t the developer’s intention to move the mixeduse zone off 16th Avenue, saying commercial owners need to be along an arterial road like 16th Avenue. Herrold responded that he felt a "Niagara-on-theLake" style downtown set-

A visit to the Cathedral of the Transfiguration SURESH PATEL We have been residents of Markham since last 33 years and as a Hindu we always admired the Cathedral of the Transfiguration built in Markham whenever we used to pass from that area. Six years back we moved in town house on Russell Dawson Road and whenever we stepped out from our house we always have holy view of this church and wanted to see from inside. It was closed for many years due to some problems, but we don’t know what. On Sunday morning, of Sept. 24, one of our neighbours told me that it is open for limited Sunday services so I went there to offer my prayer. Right now Hindus all around the world celebrating nine nights of festival of Goddess Durga/Amba and for me this is most auspicious time to visit and once I was there I was mesmerized by the beauty, its architectural view and feeling of serenity and peace of mind from outside and first time inside of

"It’s really delicious." Sage butter is one of several farm-fresh items people can buy for their Thanksgiving dinner during the Farm to Fork tour in East Gwillimbury. It will be available at the Sharon Temple, the first stop of the tour. Other stops include Thompson Potato Farm, AE Breeding Farm and Natural Meats, Rose Family Farm, Brooks Farm, Sharon Mushroom Farm, Queensville Country Store/King Cole Duck Farm and Vince’s Market. "We’re going to have taste testing pretty much at every single stop," said Madyson Taylor, tourism co-ordinator at the East Gwillimbury Chamber of Commerce. People will also learn about local farms and the history of Thanksgiving. "At each stop we are going to have a small educational component," said Taylor, adding there will also be some childfriendly activities.

One woman, one celebrated bone-building exercise class SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com When Thornhill resident Fern Krugel discovered the density in her spine was decreasing a few years ago, she began working harder at the osteoporosis class she attended twice a week. Krugel doesn’t have osteoporosis, but a next-door neighbour who suffers from the disease told Krugel she should come with her to the low-impact, aerobic exercise class. Krugel began the osteoporosis class soon after she moved to Thornhill in 1999. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. It leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture (broken bones). One year after discovering the depleting density in her spine, Krugel returned to the doctor and found her density had been built up
to a safe level. "That was remarkable to me," she said. While she can’t be sure the osteoporosis class caused the improvement, she suspects it played a role. One motivator for attending the class: if Krugel missed a class, she knew she had to answer to Helen Basch, who organized the classes and would call to find out where she has been. Brian Kagawa also found his way to the classes. He doesn’t like winter sports and wanted to stay active. The Thornhill resident started taking the classes a year ago and is still participating. While walking around the block in his neighbourhood, a woman had told him about the class and he went despite the fact that he doesn’t have osteoporosis. The first time he went, he found few other men but still enjoyed the class environment, which was posi-

KORTRIGHT CENTRE FOR CONSERVATION The 555-acre park in Vaughan features an expansive trail network through thick, mixed hardwood forest. Sweet spots in fall include Maple Sugar Bush Trail and the Lookout on Forestry Trail, which affords great vistas of the forest and the East Humber River.

NOKIIDAA TRAIL SYSTEM This 20-kilometre trail follows the East Holland River from Aurora north up to Holland Landing and passes through several conservation areas Rogers Reservoir, Sheppard’s Bush and Mabel Davis, among them - dotted with deciduous trees. It links to other community trails, providing plenty of possibilities for fall colour viewing.

ROUGE PARK Markham is the northern gateway to this sprawling national park, spanning 5,000-hectares of protected woodland and four municipalities, which is considered by some to be the best place in the GTA to get your fill of fall. Parks Canada offers free, guided walking tours from Oct. 3 to 9.

THORNTON BALES CONSERVATION AREANicknamed ’The 99 Steps,’ this 20-hectare conservation area in King sits atop the Oak Ridges Moraine and is renowned for its steep slopes and dense forest featuring sugar maple and American beech.
