Why I won’t be there for the fireworks ey to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the relatives of Barbara Kentner, an indigenous woman living in Thunder Bay who was the victim of a drive-by assault in January 2017 by a white man who shouted, “I got one,” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from a moving vehicle. My challenge is to answer the call of one of Canada’s most worthy senators, the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee who, in response to Beyak’s statements during a public forum in Ottawa on missing and murdered indigenous women, asked Canadians: “Why can’t you always remember this?" He was referring to the deliberate amnesia that Canadians have when they ‘imagine’ who they are. “Why can’t we remember and honour the truth of our nation ... this is about memorializing those people who have been the victims of a great wrong." I’m remembering who and what Canada actually is … and therefore I’m imagining what we could become. A confederation that chooses not to forget its past - but rather memorializes it in order to imagine and build something better. How about Kanata 150? Acknowledging the rich history already embedded deep in the land that includes the principle that rights, equity and respect should belong to all. Rebeka Tabobondung Indigenkaus (my name is) Wasausking Ndonjaba (I come from) Amik Dodem (I am Beaver clan) This simple statement took me 40 years to learn. This is who I am — but I had to fight like hell to figure it out. I grew up in over 13 towns and cities across the country and experienced the public education system and its imagined Canadian identity in every one of those places. Yep — I learned the propaganda that every Canadian my age learned: We are a nation built on universal values of democracy, human rights and environmentalism intimately connected through a "mosaic" of diversity, a northern climate and pristine landscape. Let’s get real … all Canadians must question the legitimacy of these "imaginary" claims due to the historical hatred directed toward the First Peoples of this land and the ongoing lack of awareness, education, and movement building toward reconciliation and the forging of reciprocal relationships based on equality and respect. Just today I was on Facebook calling for the resignation of Sen. Lynn Beyak, who said earlier this year that "good deeds" and "remarkable works" on the part of well-meaning residential school officials have been ignored in favour of more negative reports by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just yesterday I was donating mon-

In this year of Truth and Reconciliation, this 150th year of Confederation, we talked with a few descendants of the original residents of Canada (Kanata) to ask: "What does it mean to be an indigenous person in Ontario today?" (Top left) Bill Trodd and Crystal Tabobandung read a story their grandchildren just before dinner in their Magnetawan First Nation home. The two youngest of the blended family’s children read and finish after school chores. (Top right) The opening leg of the First Nation Water Walk around Lake Simcoe raises awareness of the importance of fresh water. Patricia Watts of Wabigoon Lake First Nation has the honour of collecting the water to be carried on their journey. (Middle) Blayne McLeod moved to Toronto to pursue a dream career in the arts. Raised in Bigstone Cree Nation reserve in Wabasca, Alta., the 26-year-old relocated to Toronto three years ago and joined the Centre for Indigenous Theatre. On Thursday May 25, 2017, York Regional Council passed The Regional Municipality of York development charge bylaw, No. 2017-35, which will come into effect on June 17, 2017. Development charges are fees collected from developers and are a primary source of revenue to help pay for the cost of growth-related capital infrastructure including water, wastewater, roads, transit, the Toronto-York Subway extension, police, paramedics, waste diversion, courts and public health services. The purpose of Bylaw No. 2017-35 is to fund growth-related capital costs for The Regional Municipality of York. This Region-wide development charge bylaw will apply to all lands in The Regional Municipality of York with the exception of wastewater development charges for the Village of Nobleton. The Village of Nobleton’s wastewater development charges are levied under an area-specific development charge bylaw (No. 2016-40). The map below illustrates the location to which the bylaw applies.

ABOUT US

We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. Metroland Media and all its newsrooms will continue to hold our elected officials to account and report stories that are in the best interest of our readers.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Save lives and generate revenue Ever stop at a traffic light and count the number of traffic violations? Try it, and you’ll find out that there are numerous violations in the short period of time that you are there. Not stopping at the red light when making a righthand turn is obviously the most common violation (not the only one), and one that is extremely dangerous for pedestrians. If there were red light cameras at all intersections just think how much money could be raised, especially if the fines were raised to a point that they would have an effect. Let’s say $250 would be the minimum. When you consider that each set of

traffic lights changes over 1400 times a day, just think of the revenue that could be generated. Red light cameras could be paid for very quickly right across the region. And that is only one part of a program that should be initiated. Let’s get our police constables back to what they should be doing at their salaries. What we really need are a fleet of special Traffic Control Vehicles ... hightech cars with cameras, computers, and credit card processing. They would be manned by personnel trained for the job to enforce traffic laws and ticket drivers for the numerous violations committed thousands of times every day. All tickets would have to be paid on the spot by debit

or credit card or cash. If payment is not made, the car ticketed would be towed. It would be up to the ticketed driver to go to court if he or she had a complaint. With all of the high-tech equipment, the fines really should not be disputed. The amount of revenue lost by non-enforcement of the laws is enormous. And consider the cost saving by having a TCV parked at a construction site rather than a police car and a constable. Not only would such programs reduce pedestrian and vehicular accidents, but it would generate revenue and allow police to spend their time more effectively reducing crime in other areas. Please help keep city clean The residents of our City of Markham should exercise some curb appeal in our streets. Very often, our taxpaying residents dump their garbage on the curb weeks before the pickup. The summer is nearly here and residents should use common sense in not dumping old toilets and mattress before the pickup date. The mayor’s request to keep Markham beautiful does not appeal to the few that makes our city dirty. The only alternative is to impose a fine for those keep their unsightly garbage on the curb before the pickup date. Thank you. Kingsley George Markham

The lawn at 88 Southdale Dr., in the McCowan Road-Hwy. 7 area of Markham is overgrown with heavy growth of grass and weeds. Neighbours aren’t happy that it hasn’t been mowed all spring.

Neighbour bemoans overgrown lawn to city TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com A Markham woman has had it up to here with the abandoned look of overgrown weeds, grass and untidiness at a corner residential property. And she wants the City of Markham to do something about it if the homeowner clearly won’t. The lawn at 88 Southdale Dr. in the McCowan Road and Hwy. 7 area is plainly out of control. One look at it reveals the owner of the property hasn’t gone near it with a lawn mower in months. A visit to the property on Monday, revealed thick, three-foot-high plants, grass and weeds around the large front lot. Despite a late-model SUV parked in the driveway, a knock on the front door did not bring a response. "Why should we have to look at their lawn," said a clearly angry Mary Lou Hinds, who lives around the corner from the property.

"It’s disgusting. If we can cut our grass, surely they can too," she said. Hinds has called the city asking that somebody from Markham’s parks department come out and cut the grass. She said she’s been told "They (the city) are so swamped (with calls) they just can get to it right now." Nobody was available from the City of Markham to comment as of press time. Meanwhile, fed-up residents in the Cornell community, who have been complaining about the failure of both the city and homeowners to maintain their properties, have launched an online petition on change.org called Keep Cornell Beautiful. The petition wants the City of Markham to change its service level of cutting grass in public spaces to start in the first week of May starting in 2018 to keep grass and weeds under control.

A City of Markham memo this week aims to crack down on water theft from city fire hydrants as outlined by neighbours like Harvey Thomson and Kimberly Clark who stand here at a fire hydrant locked by city staff to stop water bandits.

Heavier fines, more enforcement, city bulk water sales coming TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com It seems the City of Markham is trying to get serious in its effort to deal with water bandits. This past Monday, the city’s director of Environmental Services, Phoebe Fu, released a four-page memo to the mayor and all members of city council that details what steps the city intends to take to prevent water theft. In a recent story in the Economist and Sun and online on York Region Media, it was revealed up to $30,000 in water was stolen from the city’s fire hydrants by water bandits in 2016 when just five official reports of water theft took place. The memo said one company was fined $500 after it was caught stealing water after "being warned." In Fu’s memo, the city says it is using three methods to deter thieves from water theft: 1. Physical deterrent: This is the use of anti-tampering or locking devices on fire hydrants which the city says are now in place on

about 100 of 8,639 hydrants in the city. The cost is about $100 per lock and they’re not considered effective according to the memo as thieves will just move on to hydrants that don’t contain the devices. Firefighters don’t support them because they "delay firefighting activities." 2. Enforcement: Bylaws prohibit anyone from taking water from city hydrants. The city says it will try to provide more stringent penalties; though water theft can be heavily penalized more than a fine of $500. Fines can range as high as $50,000. 3. Public education: "Love your hydrant" is a campaign that started in 2013. "The goal was to educate residents about proper care of neighbourhood hydrants," including reporting of unauthorized use such as water theft. The next steps Fu recommends include staff revising the current bylaw to increase the fine for water theft, a request that all water tankers be licensed, continuing the "Love your Hydrant" campaign to encourage residents to report water theft, promote businesses to purchase bulk water from the city with a new bulk water station opening later this month, and to meet with York Regional Police to discuss water theft and seek support in enforcement of water theft.

Tree-cutting woman pays way out instead of planting 18 trees TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com A woman who cut down three trees without a permit on her Markham property last December won’t be personally planting 18 replacement trees in their place. Jialing Wu, who paid a fine of $4,500, or $1,500 for

each tree she cut down at 47 Gainsville Avenue in Unionville, was originally given the option of planting 18 trees or paying a fine of $10,800 by May 31 at 4:30 p.m. by the City of Markham. But it seems all has been forgiven by the City after Wu paid that $4,500 fine and also cut a cheque for

NAMING A GUARDIAN WHO WILL RAISE YOUR CHILDREN IF TRAGEDY STRIKES? The Wills Lawyer The following story is from the book “Where There’s An Inheritance”, written by Les Kotzer and Barry Fish. Rebecca and Kevin had two children aged six and eight at the time they made their wills. They decided to name Rebecca’s sister, Pamela and her husband, Herb, as guardians of their children. Rebecca and Kevin trusted Pamela and Herb to the ends of the earth. Less than a year after making their wills and appointing Pamela and Herb as their guardians, an accident claimed the lives of both Rebecca and Kevin. The provisions of their wills now meant that Pamela and Michelle Kotzer Herb were to be guardians of the two young children. As devastating as the loss of their parents was for these two children, there was even more bad news in store for them. A few months after the two children had settled in to live with Pamela and Herb, Pamela caught Herb having an extramarital affair. Now a nasty divorce was placing the children of Rebecca and Kevin right in the heat of the battle between their aunt and their uncle. Herb unexpectedly raised the stakes in his negotiations with Pamela by claiming custody of Rebecca and Kevin’s children. The fight was bitter. Pamela and Herb had no children of their own, and Pamela accused Herb of using his young niece and nephew as pawns in his battle to extort a better settlement from her. For months, the children seemed to be at risk of having to move out from their aunt Pamela’s home. Pamela ultimately obtained custody of her niece and nephew, but the divorce was both expensive and stressful. If only Rebecca and Kevin had named Pamela as sole guardian, and had not mentioned Herb, Pamela’s little niece and nephew would have been spared a great deal of the pain and suffering they had to endure. To Pamela, it was clear that, if her sister Rebecca could have seen how Herb had abused her trust, and used her two young children as pawns, she would have been horrified. In my wills practice, I see many couples with young children. The discussion of who to appoint as guardian in case both spouses are killed in an accident, is a difficult one. As I once mentioned in a previous article, I do not know how parents with young children can sleep at night without a will appointing a guardian. The person you appoint as guardian will raise your children until they reach the age of 18. Deciding who to appoint as guardian of your children if you pass away is a difficult task, and you should give great thought as to who you are appointing. As the story above illustrates, if for example, you are appointing your sister as guardian, it may be prudent to only appoint her and not her husband. Alternatively, if you are appointing your brother, the same thinking applies. Moreover, some people name the same person as both executor and guardian in their wills. This combination could lead to a potential conflict of interest. It may be prudent to appoint a different guardian than executor in your will. By separating your guardian from your executor, you are establishing checks and balances within the administration of your estate. It is important to remember that the guardian you have named in your will may not accept his or her appointment as guardian once you have passed away. It is important to tell your proposed guardian of your intention to appoint him or her in your will. You should also consider appointing a back-up guardian in the event your primary guardian does not accept the appointment when you pass away. I am a wills lawyer with the firm of Fish and Associates, 7951 Yonge Street, Thornhill (Yonge and Royal Orchard). We are located in a turn of the century home with plenty of free parking. The atmosphere is relaxed and we speak in plain language. If you wish to make a will appointment please give me a call or send me an email. I would also be pleased to review your existing will for free to make sure that it is not a recipe for a family nightmare. I also offer free will consultations, if you do not have a will and do not know where to start. Michelle can be reached at 905-881-1500 Ext. 22 or mkotzer@fishlaw.ca. TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com "When you lose a child, it is soul shattering." Gail Manning doesn’t need any outside motivation to train for the 10th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Her motivation comes from deep within. The death of her only son, Austin, from a brain tumour at 25 in August 2014 was so agonizing and painful, training on her bike and taking part in the cancer ride is all that has kept her from going "completely down the tubes or drinking myself to death." So she gets on that bike and rides and rides. "It’s the only thing you can do. There is nothing that makes you feel better. The alternative is to do nothing, but to do nothing is no benefit to yourself, no benefit to society," said Markham native Manning. Austin was diagnosed

when he was only 10, but for more than a decade, Gail said his quality of life was quite good. "The last year his life was really difficult and he physically when downhill. The last six months he couldn’t stand up," she said. "When you lose a child to cancer, it’s like no other loss. I’m sorry but it’s not

like losing a parent or a partner. When you lose a child, it is something you just can’t wrap your head around. You fall asleep finally at night and when you wake up in the morning, you realize this really isn’t just a nightmare, it really happened and you never get to the point where you can just deal with it." So her answer is to do

something positive, to feel better psychologically. "I needed to believe at least I was trying to do something to cope with the horrors of the disease and to feel like I had some control."

Gail has raised about $35,000 in all during her first nine rides and this is her 10th in the event which takes place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday and sees riders cycle 200 kilometres

from Toronto to Niagara Falls to raise money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. You can visit her page and sponsor her at bit.ly/2sEsAd8.

3 benefits of having a pet in your home Everyone knows that one of the best reasons to own a pet is the devoted and unmatched love and companionship they bring. Rather than walking into an empty house, you always have a friendly face to greet you. But what many people don’t realize is that the

positive effects of pet ownership extend much farther, as our furry friends can have a profound positive effect on our lives. Here are some of the many reasons to bring a dog into your home:

DESIRABLE WHEELER’S MILL, STOUFFVILLE Beautiful Mattamy built home! Extra wide lot, 4 bedrooms, 2nd floor laundry, finished basement with 5th bedroom, wet bar and stunning bath!! Walk to Oscar Peterson Elementary School, park, rec centre and shopping, close to GO train. MLS N3826432

Health benefits. Having a dog can improve your mind and body wellness. You’ll need to walk that dog every day, which means your daily exercise will increase, leading to better cardiovascular health. As well, dog owners have been found to have fewer heart attacks and lower blood pressure. Socialization. If you have children, pet ownership can help teach them about care-taking and responsibility. For example, if the dog food is running low, it is their job to put nutritious dog food like Purina One on the grocery list. If it’s 7 p.m., they’re the ones taking the dog for a walk. Security. Pets provide a sense of security. Studies have shown pets help alleviate stress and anxiety in their owners. They provide protection against intruders and are often used to help trau-

ma victims and stressed out students. Learn about what you can do to improve the health of your dog online at purinaone.ca.

Top 4 patio trends for 2017 Rising temperatures and shining sun mean it’s time to get outside. Whether you will be curling up with a book on your lounge chair or entertaining friends and family poolside, there are four key style trends that you will want to incorporate to help create your own outdoor oasis. Here Cindy Jardim, style and trends director for Lowe’s, shares her tips for achieving these looks, Cuban cool. This festive, fun and vibrant transitional trend evokes images of lush island life and memories of tropical locales, letting your vacation come to you. Embrace woven wicker furnishings and warm copper with lively splashes of island greens, surf blues, fiery reds, and tropical citrus tints. Consider keeping your lemonade cool with a palm tree ice cube or two. Renewed formality. Comfort and classic details inspire this tailored and timeless trend. Bring indoor comfort into your outdoor living room with gazebos and pergolas framed by luxe drapes. Paired with oversized gold lanterns and glazed ceramics, this style creates an updated traditional aesthetic. A classic mix of layered neutrals, timeless greys, Catalina blue and soft coral define this polished look. Metro modern. This contemporary design story merges urban influences with simpledetails. Picture escaping the concrete jungle with streamlined design and a cosmopolitan edge.

Contrast bursts of bold yellow against sleek shades to create visual interest with geometric patterns and crisp minimalist lines. Gracious living. Take a break in sun-kissed

casual comfort. Relaxed, soft floral patterns meet creamy whites and fresh shades of coral, apple green and robin’s egg blue to create the perfect ambiance for sitting pretty on your

porch or patio swing. Find more patio designs and outdoor furniture options online at lowes.ca.

It didn’t take long at all for Metroland Media York Region crime reporter Jeremy Grimaldi to make a major mark on the Canadian true crime landscape. Grimaldi, whose debut book, A Daughter’s Deadly Deception: The Jennifer Pan Story, was released to solid reviews last fall, announced himself with a bang Saturday night by winning the Canada Crime Writers’ national Arthur Ellis Award for 2017, for non-fiction. In doing so, the Toronto resident beat out a stellar field of nominees, which most notably included veteran National Post columnist and longtime author Christie Blatchford who was nominated for her collection: Life Sentence: Stories from Four Decades of Court Reporting or, How I fell out of Love with the Canadian Justice System. He also won over books written by Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon, for Shadow of Doubt: The Trial of Dennis Oland; Joe Friesen, for The Ballad of Danny Wolfe: The Life of a Modern Outlaw; and Debra Komar, for Black River Road: An Unthinkable Crime, an Unlikely Suspect, and the Question of Character. Grimaldi was surprised by the win, especially since this was his first book. Published in 2016 by Dundurn Press, Grimaldi’s book tells the story of a young Markham woman’s plot to kill her parents for love and money, after a lifetime of lies brought on by what she felt were pressures to be the perfect child. Grimaldi spent nearly a year in court covering the Pan, trial then did painstaking research to learn about Pan’s life and the motivation that led her to make up an alternate existence to the one her parents believed she was living. It eventually led to a catastrophic evening that left her mother dead and her father severely wounded. She was convicted of the crime. "This book is a manifesta-

Metroland Media York Region crime reporter Jeremy Grimaldi, with wife Eva, celebrates winning the 2017 Arthur Ellis non-fiction true crime book of the year award Saturday night at the Toronto Arts and Letters club. Grimaldi beat four other authors for his debut book, A Daughter’s Deadly Deception: The Jennifer Pan Story, published in 2016 by Dundurn. tion of two years of my life and more years of police investigation, and I hope it does some good," Grimaldi said. "I just didn’t think I was going to win, there was no way. I was very surprised.... But I think it was a tale of a very private culture, and we got to see child-rearing techniques inside a strict Asian family. We got to see, from Jennifer’s standpoint, what the results were and we got to see something we’ve never seen in Canadian history: a case of a daughter hiring men to kill her own parents," Grimaldi said. A Daughter’s Deadly Deception is broken into several parts dealing with the investigation, the trial and then, perhaps most importantly, Jennifer’s upbringing and the lead-up to the crime itself. The what, where, when, who and how of the crime involving the shooting of Jennifer’s parents is revealed. What Grimaldi tries hard to do is tell the reader why it happened, the most difficult and most interesting thing to do. Grimaldi considers this third section the key to the book. "In so many ways, true crime focuses on the act, but

the act is tiny, it is minutiae, it’s what leads up to the act, not just in the months and weeks before, but in years and decades before, from birth. If a society is judged on how we treat our most vulnerable people, history may not look at us too kindly. Some may say criminals are our most vulnerable. What do we do to them? We throw them in jail and there’s very little help for them after or before. "It’s a look at the whole story, rather than just the crime, that’s what sets this book apart from other books in the same genre." After covering the trial and writing the book, Grimaldi doesn’t consider Jennifer a monster. "I just consider her a normal girl, with normal problems who spiraled out of control. I’ve spoken to AsianAmerican psychiatrists and I said: ’Are you surprised by this (what happened with Jennifer)? And they said: ’Not at all. This is just the perfect storm. This is just the result of tiger parenting.’ "Whether that is true or not is up to the reader (to decide.)" And his hopes for the book? What every author hopes for. "I really hope it gets read."
