York Regional Police Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg calls in another sighting as media joined police in action as they nabbed distracted drivers while peering out the windows of public transit buses. Police also unveiled signs, to be featured on select buses in York Region, meant to remind drivers they are being watched.

Police on a bus: ’Put down that phone’ KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Ever feel like you’re being watched? You should, because you are. York Regional Police wants you to know that officers have

their eyes on you when you’re on the road - and even when you think you can’t be seen, they see. That little trick you do, when you tap at your cellphone between your knees, below the steering wheel? They’re onto you.

Hiding the phone under your thigh? They’re onto that, too, and you can thank public transit buses, towering above your car in the next lane, for revealing your secret. York police’s new campaign

"We’re on board; are you?" was launched this week with a unique "bus ride-along". Media was invited to tag along April 13 aboard one of their newly-"wrapped" buses displaying

KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Daniel Share-Strom was just three when it became clear what his mission in life would be - and that the mission would involve a microphone. He had always been a different child, not really interested in other kids, in toys, in communicating with others. But one day he and his mom were at garage sale and Daniel made a beeline for the toy box. He grabbed a microphone, stood in the middle of the driveway and began belting out "Blue Suede Shoes". It happened again at a family friend’s concert, when one of the musicians invited those in the audience to perform, and quiet little Daniel leaped on stage. Things at home weren’t so stellar, though. Daniel was a smart kid, but the things he did made him look dumb. He hated loud noises, couldn’t ride a bike, was socially awkward, clumsy, disorganized - and the worst part: these "problems" were what people used to identify him, rather than the many other things he did well. At 10, he was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome and he and his family began the agonizing process of ensuring he got the supports he needed at school. He had been tapping into his love for the microphone at local weddings and funerals, but now Daniel had a mission he would use his "stage presence" to explain what it meant to have Aspergers. It started at Keswick

Maxine and son Daniel Strom, who has Aspergers, has been invited to be keynote speaker at prestigious conference in Atlanta, where he’ll be talking about what it’s like to have autism High School where he created a power point to share his insight with teachers and principals. Over the next 13 years, his mission mushroomed as he was invited to speak at bigger venues throughout Ontario - at colleges, universities, disabilities organizations. He spoke to Southlake hospital’s mental health professionals, to volunteers at 310Cope (York Region’s community crisis response), and in 2016, he gave a TedTalk at York University. It was the latter that got him noticed south of the border and this week, he has been invited to take his show on the road in Atlanta, where he will be keynote

speaker at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism Awareness Month Event, April 20. He is following in big footsteps: previous speakers include world-famous autism advocates Dr. Temple Grandin and actor Ed Asner who has a son with autism and two grandsons on the spectrum. Daniel and his mother, Maxine Share, recently moved to Bradford and they often speak at events together, wearing funny glasses they call "autism goggles" to show why the world needs to see autism differently. It is time, they say, to rebrand autism spectrum disorders, in the same way

2017 Elantra

’People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world.’ marketing has made waves on the issue of mental illness. Aspergers is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum and can impact everything from social and organizational skills, to physical activity, language and emotions. Daniel may hate toothbrushes, loud noises and washing his hair - but this is not all he wants us to know about him. Unfortunately, if you are autistic, he says, you are identified by the

things that are "wrong". "We are judged by our distance from so-called normal and by the list of things that have to be fixed," he says. Because autism impacts how one communicates, learns and interacts, the list of things to be "fixed" can be long - and as a result, people with autism grow up feeling broken, he says. "People tend cringe or at very least have preconceived notions of what autism is - someone who can’t

be taught, who’s going to be a problem, who might be at best like Rain Man or Sheldon from Big Bang theory." In fact a surprising number of successful people fall on the autism spectrum, and he believes it’s time for them to "come out of the closet". Those who speak out about depression are helping destigmatize depression and the same approach can help those with autism, he says. Leaving the status quo, he says, is deadly. Maxine, who acts as administrative assistant to Daniel and helps him write his speeches, agrees. "What we’re doing now is killing people," she says. "This system is not working." Those with autism have nine times the suicide rate, she says, they die years earlier than the average person and have 80 per cent unemployment even though they often test very highly and are often extremely skilled in one area. "People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world," adds Daniel. Better teacher training, curriculum that can beadjusted to reflect the pace of those on the spectrum, a publiceducation campaign featuring those on the spectrum and encouragement foremployers to hire people with autism can all lead to change, he says. "Autism is not a defect or a mental illness, and it is not a catastrophe. It is simply another way of experiencing the world."

Police take to transit l Continued from front

the image of a YRP officer leaning out the window, writing a ticket. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that police are peering down at you from York Region buses and if you want to avoid a hefty fine, you best put down that phone. York Regional Police Traffic Enforcement Unit, in conjunction with York Region Transit, launched the campaign this week to fight distracted driving. The offence - use of cellphones in particular - remains a significant safety concern for drivers and pedestrians, according to traffic bureau Insp. Randy Slade. Since January, the YRP has been riding public transit to watch for drivers using their cellphones or other hand-held devices, then relaying the information to officers patrolling the roadways. Now they’ve added the "bus wraps", depicting a police officer leaning out of the bus window, on five transit vehicles travelling throughout the region. The campaign is two-pronged: while drivers are nabbed for using their devices, bus passengers see first-hand just how dangerous the roads can be for them as pedestrians. Those same passengers are often eager to help police by looking for offenders from their own bus seats and sharing with the police officer on board. It didn’t take long for the reporters, photographers and camera operators to get into the spirit of things during Friday’s ride-along. As the bus travelled south on Yonge Street to Highway 7, Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg immediately spotted two drivers surreptitiously tapping on their phones. He communicated the info via radio to nearby unmarked police vehicles and within minutes, those drivers were facing $490 fines and three lost demerit points. Soon, the ride-along media were joining in, peering into cars ("like an Easter egg hunt for adults", someone joked), pointing out other offenders - a female in a white Cherokee, a man in a beige convertible - and laughing to see how many drivers scrambled to hide the phones beneath their legs when they realized they were caught. One driver caught with his phone was nabbed for much more: three-times-suspended license, no insurance, on probation and not allowed to drive his car. A total of five drivers were nabbed in the short trip. Earlier that day, police caught 16 distracted drivers between Yonge and Mulock and Steeles, including one using a full-sized iPad, Sidenberg said. Buses provide the perfect high vantage point, he said, especially for peering into pickup trucks and cube vans. "Our message is: put it down," said Slade. "There is nothing that important that can’t wait until you get to your destination."

Several weeks ago we were sitting in our staff meeting trying to brainstorm a theme for this week’s ad when I announced we should come up with some “Innovative S%*&”. My expletive proclamation may have shocked, but it actually became the framework for this ad – that instead of promoting our tried and true fare, we’d drum up some new recipes and see what catches on - so feel free to give us some feedback. These are the first of these – something I’ve been harassing Mike for about a year and a half now to make up, Jalapeño Cheddar Burgers! I always grab ground sirloin and make these for myself at home, with extra old cheddar, diced hot peppers, fresh garlic, salt and /LB pepper. Featured at:

If you’ve looked into our fresh case recently and had your jaw drop at some of the pricing, you are not alone. Rest assured, charging $4.99 for a head of romaine lettuce or broccoli is not my attempt to retire at the ripe age of 35. Given the rainy weather in California, we have experienced a major supply gap which has caused prices to jump. We’ve cut our margins on celery, broccoli, romaine and iceberg and are essentially selling them to you at our cost. So…we’ve turned to our friends at Meadowsweet Farms, just up Warden from us, to help you have your greens while keeping some green in your wallet. They have a line of seriously excellent and flavourful organic salad blends comprised of dozens of seasonally available lettuces. We’ll have their Lovely Lettuce, a blend of baby romaine and spring lettuces as well as their Spicy and Wicked Blend, a punch in the tastebuds of arugula, mustard greens and lettuces, my EACH personal favourite! SPICY BUTT! MAHI MAHI This naughtily-named roast is the creation of our resident Englishman, Charlie. We bone out a big ol’ pork butt (the shoulder roast) and stuff it with our chorizo sausage meat. The secret to roasting a pork butt is roasting it at a higher temp (425˚ is perfect) for the first twenty minutes before reducing it to 300˚ to finish for about four hours. Also, adding a drip pan with your fave fruit juice will dually give you a juicier roast and PER LB add a fragrant flavour to this spicy centerpiece. Featured at:

We’ll be featuring wild Mahi-Mahi from Costa Rica this week. This firmfleshed, white fish is meant to be broiled or grilled. Very versatile, I find this to be the ideal fish for fish tacos, with shredded cabbage, mango salsa and fresh cilantro. Another excellent preparation is to serve this over a Caribbeanstyle coconut rice, again with mango salsa. (If you can’t tell, I’m a sucker for mango salsa…I’ll make sure we have some this week as it really is the perfect condiment PER LB here). Featured at:

ABOUT US

Time for local elections to embrace technology The Internet has become an increasingly large presence in our lives. More and more, it’s the means through which we communicate, gather information, enjoy entertainment and even do business. Despite all of that, however, few opportunities exist for citizens to take part in the democratic process electronically. Markham has offered Internet voting during the advanced polling period since 2003, while Ajax introduced electronic voting for the 2014 municipal election. Earlier this month, Newmarket council voted to become the first municipality in York Region to move to a fully electronic voting model for the 2018 election that will allow citizens to cast their vote online or over the telephone instead of the traditional paper ballot method. Residents will still be able to attend a voting location in-person, if they wish, on certain dates and times. Just this week, Bradford West Gwillimbury council voted to eliminate paper ballots and replace them with Internet and telephone voting for next year’s municipal election. The town’s deputy clerk, Tara Reynolds, described electronic voting as a win-win for its convenience, low cost and potential to boost turnout, while also noting that physical electronic polling stations would also be set up for those needing assistance or who simply prefer to get out and vote. At the same time, the City of Vaughan recently considered the idea of electronic voting only to stick with optical scan tabulators to count ballots for the 2018 election. Staff will report back in 2020 on security and implementation measures in time for the 2022 election, but the decision runs headlong against the winds of change. Privacy and security concerns cropped up among Bradford councillors, but Reynolds noted that additional layers of security, beyond a PIN number and birth date entry, could be implemented. Most of us already do our banking online and many of us file our taxes electronically as well, so allowing citizens to cast their ballots via the Internet makes a lot of sense and numerous ways exist to ensure the integrity of the process. Politicians always seem to lament voter turnout figures following an election and electronic voting is an inexpensive way to make it easier for people to participate, especially in areas where geography can pose difficulties reaching a polling station. Every municipality should be working toward implementing electronic voting ideally in time for the 2018 campaign. It’s time for local democracy to enter the 21st century.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Development will bring traffic chaos Re: Massive Markham development has both sides talking up storm, March 23. On reading this article, my immediate thought was déjà vu, history is repeating itself. As a young teen I lived in North York, and my summer job every year was caddying for members of York Downs Golf Course, which at that time was located in North York. The pay was lousy and the members were notorious for low tips, but there was a certain camaraderie between we workers and respect for the club, especially when head pro Norm Smith arranged for us to play the front nine holes once a week. Imagine our shock

when we were told developers now owned the land and that members would be moving way up north to a place called Unionville, leaving us without summer jobs. That shock was nothing compared to the outrage of the local population when they learned that the developer was to build numerous housing units on the property. That’s when those caring North York politicians got into the act and realized they had been elected to enhance the lives of the people of North York, and must stop this major developer. The result was not one house was built on those lands. Instead, the area was turned into the beauti-

ful Earl Bales Park that welcomes varied activities from skiing in the winter to outdoor theatre in the summer. From your article, it appears some politicians like Coun. Valerie Burke are taking the side of the electorate. My kudos to them. Since moving to Unionville over 35 years ago, I’ve watched a number of mayors and their councils give the developers free reign in turning our quaint town into a city. Is that called progress? When I moved here to the Kennedy-16th Avenue area, I also purchased a condo office in the Highway 7-Woodbine area, because clients were happy it was close to highways and

it took me eight minutes of driving to commute. As more development took place, my driving time became about 25 minutes, and I mapped out a "snow route" through the back streets of Unionville in case of weather emergencies. Now that building on the farm at Kennedy-16th Avenue is almost complete and is adding numerous cars to the gridlock on 16th Avenue. I have to drive my emergency "snow route" to work every day, which takes 30 minutes. If the developer gets his way and builds 2,400 units on York Downs, and you add 5,000 cars to the mix, I dread to think of the resulting traffic chaos. I trust our politicians will act to prevent such a result. David J. Fleishman Unionville

Married 74 years, couple’s secret: ’sense of humour, give and take’ TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com For nearly 74 years, Betty Pearce, 97, has been asking herself the secret to her marriage to husband Art, 98. Last week over a pre-anniversary lunch at Unionville’s Old Country Inn, she laughed as she came up with the answer: a sense of humour. The Unionville couple took time out to choose love over war and married May 1, 1943 in England, while both served their country. The two, who met in 1941 while she was in the WRENS (Women’s Royal Naval Service), he in the army, had a weeklong honeymoon then were right back to their military duties. "We saw each other every three months when there was leave," Betty said. Daughter Angela was

Market crash/ Great Depression The Great Crash of October 1929 resulted when panic struck Wall Street, Toronto and Montreal resulting in billions of dollars in lost revenues for investors and businesses in wild stock selloffs. It was followed in 1930 and beyond by the Great Depression as companies laid off thousands of workers and many shut down. Unemployment rose to a record 25 per cent and, in a time when there was no social safety net, people struggled to make ends meet. Only the outbreak of war in 1939-40 and the need for war supplies brought employment and industry back.

Every dog has his day. And Friday was Fresco’s at Markhaven Senior Centre in Markham as the St. John Ambulance therapy dog entertained happy seniors. The 5-year-old retrieverlab-poodle mix gently allowed anyone who wished to pet him as he gobbled treats from outstretched hands. To top it all off, Fresco was given a yummy birthday cake in the shape of a dog bone to celebrate his 100th visit to Markhaven. The cake didn’t last long as Fresco went at it with gusto. TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com The same producer who brought out the worldwide hit Shaolin Warriors is bringing a Chinese martial arts and acrobatics show to the Flato Markham Theatre for five performances next week. Immortal Chi, which has

what its creators call "adrenalin-packed stunts and traditional weaponry" and features an all-female percussion ensemble, will be at the theatre April 20-22. Performances are set for 10 a.m. (special one-hour matinee performance) and 8 p.m. tonight, 8 p.m. tomorrow, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on

Saturday. The show got its world première tour in the United Kingdom in 2014. It involves a narrative around a TaiChi master and his ultimate challenge to "regain his inner energy and life force." For more information and tickets, visit markhamtheatre.ca.

I WANT TO ENJOY THE TIME I HAVE LEFT “I didn’t realize how lonely I was living alone in a condo. I knew nobody. I had no activities. I have my son but he’s busy — you can’t expect your children to entertain you. I thought, ‘There’s not much time left, I want make the most of it.’ I organize the card games here. We haven’t got time to be sad or lonely because we’re too busy having fun together.” –Doreen, 80 MAINTAINING MY HOME WAS TOO MUCH “I had a house on two acres with hedges that needed trimming, grass that needed cutting and snow to shovel. I felt I was ready to stop worrying about cooking and chores.” –Peter, 80 MY HUSBAND DIDN’T WANT ME TO BE ALONE “Before my husband died, he wanted me to move to a residence. He knew how much I like people and didn’t want me to be lonely. I’m glad he suggested it. The staff is fantastic, the food is excellent and there are lots of activities. –Eleanor, 83

I COULDN’T DRIVE ANYMORE “I was living in a townhouse by myself. I’d suffered a stroke and was no longer able to drive. Driving is so important when you live alone. Now I take the residence bus when I need to run errands.” –Helen, 90 MY HOUSE NEEDED RENOVATIONS “I lived in my century home for 40 years and loved it. But the garden was beginning to be overgrown, the roof needed replacing and I couldn’t handle the stairs. I figured I would be better off moving than paying to fix up a house that I was already having trouble managing.” –May, 90 MY WIFE HAS DEMENTIA “We were living in our home when my wife was diagnosed with dementia. I thought let’s get used to someplace that meets both our needs. I wanted her to be safe and comfortable and I wanted to stay active.” –Ed, 87 To find out more about first-class senior living, visit amica.ca.

A survivor’s story: Filippo Rocca, a 100-year-old Italian Army veteran, shares the story of his five-year struggle for survival as a prisoner of war in Africa and England during the Second World War. Conscription, a linguistic divide: The decision to begin a draft split our country deeply; almost every francophone MP rejected it while nearly every anglophone MP supported it. After the Bloom: A daughter’s search for her mother reveals her family’s past in a Japanese internment camp during the Second World War. Epic in scope, intimate in style, Leslie Shimotakahara’s novel blurs between the present and the ever-present past. Huntsville murder: In 2004 a 66-year-old retiree was murdered in his Huntsville home. Despite some promising leads and a $50,000 reward for information the case remains unsolved.

Easter Bunny hops into Markham Village for fun on Saturday TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com Markham residents enjoyed themselves during a sometimes rainy, overcast Easter Saturday. The Easter Bunny came to Markham Village to hop along and provide a few treats to some youngsters to brighten their weekend. Justin Ho was able to snuggle up to the Easter Bunny during the Markham BIA’s Easter Celebration on Main Street on Saturday. Eric Corej and his daughter, Gisella, 2, stayed dry on the damp day. Residents enjoyed glorious weather on Good Friday and decent weather on Easter Sunday as they got out-and-about throughout the city. Many also had the day off Monday too as many offices and some businesses were closed to enjoy an extra long weekend. But it was back to work for everyone by Tuesday until the next long weekend in late May.

Bath trends to make a statement Bathroom designs have come a long way. From the ice cream-colours and wallpaper border applied in the 1980s to the bold and contemporary choices of the 2000s, styles continue to evolve while incorporating the latest materials. This year, consider keeping your design decisions simple. Here are some key trends: Tile: Modern bathrooms commonly feature unique applications of tile, which are popular

because they are affordable and versatile. Options include “finger” tiles, which can be applied either vertically or horizontally. Colour: Modern baths use a lot of black, white and gray. These moody neutrals are a style hit and can exude luxury and relaxation. Flooring: You can be original with what you place underfoot in your bathroom. Ceramics, wood and natural stone are widely used in to-

day’s bath designs. Lighting: Rather than one main light source, multiple lighting fixtures that highlight key areas of the bathroom are popular today. Natural elements: Be sure to include green, living plants as part of your bathroom vibe. They add to the ambiance and bring life and oxygen to any space.

Easily increase your home’s resale appeal

By Scott McGillivray Homes that show well and have great features typically sell faster than their counterparts, sometimes for a premium. If you want your home to stand out, a little effort can go a long way. Try these tips to create an enticing first impression. 1. Clean. A neat, clean home shows pride of ownership and suggests that it is well maintained. 2. Paint. Opt for a neutral colour so buyers will feel like there’s one less thing to do before moving in. Grey, beige or the popular combination known as “greige” are always a hit. A fresh coat of white

paint on trim will brighten the rooms. 3. Highlight your home’s energy efficiency and green features. This is increasingly a big selling point, especially among younger buyers. New insulation that offers superior thermal performance and increased fire resistance, like Roxul Comfortbatt and Safe ‘n’ Sound, represent longterm savings and benefits to potential purchasers. Smart thermostats and low-flow water fixtures are also coveted. 4. Replace worn flooring. Another lower-cost option is to give your floors a makeover by refinishing hardwood or shampooing carpets. 5. Make simple updates. New light fixtures or hardware on cabinetry can provide your room with an instant refresh. Give cabinets a new coat of paint if they look tired or dated. 6. Let there be light. Replace heavy drapes with sheer window coverings or valances to flood the home with as much natural light as possible. 7. Open up the space. Remove excess furniture and all signs of clutter. Organize closets and pantries. Open windows to allow the fresh air in. 8. Neutralize decor. Remove personal photos. Add inviting elements like fresh flowers, throws or toss cushions. 9. Create curb appeal. Clean and pressure-wash the driveway and walkways. Cut the grass, pull weeds, and trim shrubs. Consider planting annuals for fresh pops of colour. Paint your front

door and house numbers, if needed. Stage the patio furniture to create the feeling of an outdoor retreat. 10. Throw down the welcome mat, and let buyers take it all in. Not ready to sell? These tips also work well to re-

vitalize a much-loved older home.
