LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com Vern Catania was in agony with no relief in sight as he waited months for hip replacement surgery. “It was excruciating pain,”

the 67-year-old Bradford-area resident said. Catania, a sales rep with York Region Media Group, limped to his family doctor, who sent him for tests, which confirmed severe arthritis in his left hip. In March 2015, his doctor

referred him to a Newmarket orthopedic surgeon. While Catania waited to for a date for an initial consultation, his condition deteriorated. Favourite activities like golf went by the wayside. Sitting became unbearable. Grandchildren were

recruited for help with routine chores. When he hadn’t heard about an appointment date by June, he called the surgeon’s office in desperation, requesting to be put on the cancellation list if another

Time for action on wait times

The Markham Economist & Sun, published every Thursday, is a division of the Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. The Metroland family of newspapers is comprised of more than 100 community publications across Ontario.

While musician Tom Petty likely wasn’t decrying lengthy health care delays when he wrote The Waiting is the Hardest Part, many Ontario patients facing prolonged waits for a host of procedures can no doubt relate to the sentiment behind the song. Aside from dealing with pain accompanying many untreated ailments, patients forced to wait too long for treatment frequently experience worse outcomes once they do receive care, explained Patients Canada chair Michael Decter, who co-authored the 2006 report Navigating Canada’s Health Care. Decter went on to say there has been "slippage" since initial progress was made on wait times in 2004. A November 2016 report from the Fraser Institute, entitled Waiting Your Turn: Wait Times for Health Care in Canada, paints a pretty dismal picture of what waiting for care currently looks like. The average wait time from referral by a family doctor to treatment has ballooned from 9.3 weeks in 1993 to 20 weeks today. Ontario’s average wait time of 15.6 weeks is better than the national average, but still not worth celebrating compared to some other jurisdictions with universal health care. "I think medical wait times have become the defining feature of Canada’s health-care system," noted Bacchus Barua, a senior economist with the right-leaning think tank who co-authored the report. David Jensen, a spokesperson for Ontario’s Ministry of Health, said the province has invested more than $1.9 billion since 2003/4 to fund additional procedures to trim wait times and that nearly $78 million per year is being invested to allow 6,468 surgical procedures and more than 237,000 hours of operation for MRI and CT tests. That’s all well and good, but there has to be more to the government’s approach than simply throwing increasing sums of money at the problem, especially when you consider that health care already makes up $51.8 billion of the province’s $133.9-billion budget. Provincial and federal governments in Canada can and should look to other jurisdictions with universal health care systems to see what successes they’ve had with respect to wait times and try and emulate them here. With stress on the system only projected to grow as the population ages, the time for swift, decisive action is now. Patients waiting too long are people waiting too long to get on with their lives. Simply put, a lengthy wait to receive necessary health care adds insult to injury.

The Markham Economist & Sun is a member of the National NewsMedia Council. Complainants are urged to bring their concerns to the attention of the newspaper and, if not satisfied, write The National NewsMedia Council, Suite 200, 890 Yonge St., Toronto, ON M4W 2H2. Why the secrecy in Markham? I have noted that the City of Markham is now communicating in languages other than the two official languages of Canada. Yet, this communication only addresses some nationalities and not all nationalities, which means preferential treatment for some and discriminatory treatment for others. I have asked my councillor about this and she refused to comment. I have written, on two occasions, to Mayor Frank Scarpitti, but he refuses to address my queries. I have a great deal of difficulty figuring out why this should be a huge secret that nobody wants to comment on and provide a reason. It seriously raises

Developers must respect tree-cutting rules Re: Markham tree cut spurs demand for higher fines; developer blames ’jealousy,’ Feb. 7. Thanks for shedding light on this critical issue. The developer’s comments are offensive. This has nothing to do with "jealousy," as he puts it, and everything to do with the fact that in Canada - and especially the city of Markham we respect and value our natural environment, parks and pond systems. Our trees and the natu-

ral surroundings are there for all of us to enjoy, not to mention the quality-of-life benefits we receive. Build away, but respect the rules we have in place. A tree can’t just be arbitrarily cut down because it’s in a developer’s way. We don’t need a concrete jungle with clogged air and tree stumps, no matter how massive or beautiful a custom-made home is. I have always enjoyed walking on Gainsville because of the trees; some of them are well over 100 years old. People come from all over to enjoy Toogood Pond and the nature that surrounds it. Developers and houses aside, our flag has a maple leaf on it for a reason. Let’s not forget that. Debbie Dasios Unionville

Ontario providing $4.1M in grants to nonprofits AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com There are more than 55,000 nonprofits in Ontario, contributing close to $67 billion to the annual economy. "The scope of their work is enormous, I don’t have to tell you," said Citizenship and Immigration Minister Laura Albanese. "They all have something in common; they make a real difference in our lives." Albanese, together with Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard, were at Blue Hills Child and Family Centre in Aurora to make an announcement. The provincial government is giving not-forprofit organizations a boost through the new Partnership Grant Program. Not only do not-for-profit organizations play an important role, but they also contribute close to $67 billion annually, Albanese said. The province is providing $4.1 million over the next two years through a new grant program, the Partnership Grant Program. The program will provide grants and funding for 21 projects that will help organizations attract, retain and maintain volunteers. Blue Hills Child and Family Centre as well as the Community Inclusivity and Equity Council of York Region (CIECYR) were among 21 grant recipients. Blue Hills received more than $145,000 to launch a project dealing with inclusive leadership. CIECYR received close to $150,000 to develop an equity training module to train 25 equity facilitators across the province and to create a virtual library of resources. The program aims to provide nonprofit organizations with training on how to hire, retain volunteers and provide services that are equitable. The goal is to enhance fair access to social services, said CIECYR co-chair Michael Bowe. "To eliminate the unconscionable biases, we need to critically examine isms through an equity lens," Bowe said. Viewing leadership, volunteers and services through an equity lens would also produce corrective measures, he added. The program also calls for the creation of standard resources, such as training manuals, sessions and tools. The aim is to help organizations boost their volunteer corps by including members of the LGBTQ community as well as those with intellectual disabilities. SHAKEDOWN SALE

We sourced some excellent Prime Sirloin this week, a designation reserved for the top 2% of beef produced, graded in terms of tenderness, juiciness and flavour. However, we couldn’t decide if we wanted to feature Roasts, Steaks or Burgers; so naturally we decided to put them all on sale, including ground sirloin as well. I think the real star here is our Sirloin Burgers which are seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, dehydrated onions and a zip of HP sauce. Even if it’s a little too cold outside to fire up the grill, one of my favourite and easiest meals at home is searing one of these in a smoking hot cast-iron pan and finishing it on broil in the oven topped with sautéed mushrooms and a slice of Swiss cheese. JUST A HEADS UP…

Evan here…very often we have folk from around the country (even from other countries) come and visit our store just to say hi, and sometimes in search of ideas and know-how and we very happily show them around and explain our approach to food. I find it good to network with these folks, and often we do reciprocal visits when it’s possible. A recent visit was from a pair of fellows from Clarenville, Newfoundland, who were in search of ideas to perk-up their store. Through lunch they were explaining that they do a very successful weekly 50/50 draw amongst their customers in support of local charities, and it occurred to me that we, as well, could do that. With their help and blessing, we have set that project in motion through the appropriate regulatory channels, and very shortly we will begin. The charity of choice as you might imagine will be Markham Stouffville Hospital, and the cost per ticket will be a toonie. Be watching for the official start to this; I think that it will be fun.

Learn how to become a Magna Hoedown charity recipient AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com It’s time to shimmy, shake and make the earth quake. Plans are already underway for the 2017 Manga Hoedown, the annual country western event that rocks the stage in Aurora. To kick things off, Magna International and the 2017 Magna Hoedown Committee are hosting an information session for all York Region charities, non-profits and community organizations interested in learning how to become a Magna Hoedown recipient. The information session is Feb. 23, 7 p.m. at Aurora Town Hall, 100 John West Way. This is an opportunity for new applicants and former recipients to learn about the application process, how to submit an application and expectations. Last year’s event raised

more than $479,000, which benefited 15 local organizations. "The info night is key," said Steve Hinder, Hoedown committee chairperson and manager of Neighbourhood Network, the Hoedown organizing committee. "We want to set applicants up for success, make sure they know the requirements and don’t have false expectations." Selected recipients are expected to engage with the community, assist in ticket and raffle sales, and setup the week leading up to and the day of the annual event. The information session is also an opportunity for similar, smaller organizations to team up and collaborate, drawn upon and share resources. For instance, last year the Optimist clubs of Aurora and Newmarket, both providing similar services, teamed up and put in one

application. Instead of selecting one or the other as a recipient, both benefited from last year’s event. A big part of the recipient process is the number of available volunteers. One of the expectations for recipients is to produce a team of volunteers who help put on the event. More than 700 volunteers from 15 organizations were involved in last year’s event. "The Hoedown can’t happen without volunteers," Hinder said. "It’s those same people who roll up their sleeves and get involved." Recipient applications for this year’s event will be available online following the information session and will close March 24. Recipients for this year’s event are expected to be announced by mid-April. For more information or to RSVP for the event, call 905-726-3737 or email info@hoedown.ca

TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com "Oh you pretty Chitty Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang We love you And in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang What we’ll do." You’ll be able to singalong to that well-loved tune when you go to the Unionville Theatre Company’s presentation of the 1960s classic "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" next week at the Flato Markham Theatre. There are eight shows to pick from, so there’s plenty of choice for local fans. The well-loved musical, a family-friendly show that pits good versus not-so-really-evil, but is really an excuse to sing some great songs, is an ideal chance to

enjoy a chance out for everyone. A good time is sure to be had by all, said director Clennie Fraser-Mangialardi. "The audience can expect a good old happy family story. "The triumph of good over evil, though our villains aren’t terribly villainous. It’s just a really joyful story. "Teamwork surpasses everything." She said she stuck very closely to the original script, penned by Ian Fleming, more famous as the man who wrote the James Bond 007 novels. "It’s going to be awesome," she said. David Rudat, who plays Grandpa Potts, is thrilled to be in the play. "This is a childhood favourite. I grew up with the

1968 movie (that stars Dick Van Dyke)," he said. "I’m very excited. We have a live orchestra and it takes it up a couple more notches," he said. "There is great music, lots of fun and smiles. "You’ll laugh and you’ll leave singing the song," said Rudat. Shows are playing on Wednesday, Feb. 22, Thursday, Feb. 23, and Friday, Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets available through Unionville Theatre Company only. Tickets for shows on Feb. 23, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, 1 p.m., Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m., available at Flato Markham Theatre Box Office at 905305-7469. Adults $30, students/seniors and groups of 15 or more, $25.

Create drama with bold paint colours Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. Paint colours can dramatically change the mood and the design of a home. And depending on a homeowner’s goals, paint can make a statement or blend into the background. Many people are now looking to bold colours to make spaces stand out. But choosing a paint colour can be challenging for some. Homeowners looking to update walls and complement decor may want to look at some of the more impactful colours that Pantone indicates will be popular for the 2017 season. Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Pink Yarrow, and 2017’s colour of the year, Greenery, are some of the more eyecatching selections. Once colours are selected, consider these guidelines for using bolder colours in room designs.

DECIDE HOW BIG AN IMPACT YOU WANT TO MAKE Are you looking for colour overload or just a small focal point of vivid colour? Remember, using bold colour doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold colour display. Otherwise, rely on bold colours to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or mouldings and trim.

TRY BOLD IN A SMALL SPACE Many people are surprised at how well bold colours work in small spaces. Powder rooms can be

an ideal spot to experiment with paint colours, as they are used for short periods of time. Try deep colours that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic. Dark, bold hues can be toned down by different accents, such as neutral coloured fixtures and towels.

GO BOLD IN THE KITCHEN Incorporate a splash of colour in the kitchen without going overboard. Try an appliance or design fixture in a bright shade. Or paint the inside of the cabinets in your favorite colour and install glass inserts in the cabinet doors so that everyone gets a peek of the colour beyond. A neutral kitchen also can be brightened up with the use of silverware, dishes, pots and pans, and other kitchen items, like stand mixers or blenders featured in bold hues.

ESTABLISH BALANCE Rely on neutral furniture, rugs, mouldings and baseboards if you decide to take bold colours up a notch. This will help create a sense of balance in the room.

STICK TO BOLDNESS ON INTERCHANGEABLE ITEMS Those who like to experiment with colour may find that they like to switch out the colours now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out colour that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when

the mood strikes. Painting is a fun way to experiment with colour and brighten up the home. Many homeowners are not hesitant to use bold shades of colour when they learn the right techniques.

And because paint is an inexpensive option for making over a room, homeowners who find they do not like a particular colour can easily paint over it with a new colour.
