Welcome

It is my pleasure to introduce the inaugural yearbook for Stirling Golf Club.

This yearbook highlights the Club facilities available to visiting players and the range of local amenities that may be of interest to them and their families.

Stirling Golf Club is a private club, founded in 1869 although history informs us that the game of golf met here with royal acclaim by King James 1V of Scotland as far back as 1506.

Robert Roy – Captain

The course sits in the backdrop of Stirling Castle and offers views of the surrounding hills and the Wallace Monument and is within easy reach, by road or rail, of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Callander and the Trossachs. This 18 hole, par 72 course was redesigned in 1967 by Henry Cotton and represents a challenging 6488 yards of sheer pleasure.

A consistently high standard of green keeping and careful investment over the years has resulted in Stirling Golf Club remaining one of the foremost courses in the area. The course is ever popular with the many visiting parties who appreciate the warmth and friendliness of the Club. Visiting parties are welcomed by PGA Professional Ian Collins and his staff, who also offer expert tuition for beginners or those seeking to improve upon their golfing technique. The restaurant facilities offer a wide range of wholesome cuisine within a pleasant and relaxing environment. Over 100 parking spaces are provided within the grounds of the Club. Finally I would encourage all members and visitors to refer to our website for up to date information.

Club Facilities Foyer

Catering

Entry to the clubhouse is via the foyer which displays the Captains and Club Champions Boards together with photographs of the Past Captains dating back to 1869.

The catering service is run by H & H Catering, Andrew Hornall, a club member and Chef Ian Hamilton have combined to create a first class catering facility.

Small Lounge

They cater for the needs of members, visiting parties and functions organised by either themselves or the club. They can be contacted on 01786 464098 option 3.

The small lounge is mainly used by gentlemen to watch television. It has a pleasant outlook over the 18th green and is serviced by a small bar. There is also a gaming machine for use by members and guests. Main Lounge This lounge is the focal point of the club and has seating for about 70 in the bar area. The restaurant is also in the main lounge and has seating for about 60. Both the lounge and restaurant have great views over the course.

Young Persons Area This area is just off the main foyer and there is a pool table and television for use by young persons in the club. Locker Rooms The locker rooms for ladies and gentlemen provide pleasant facilities for changing before and after a round. Toilets, washing facilities and showers are located in the locker rooms.

Ladies’Report

Stirling Golf Club, overlooked by Stirling Castle, is on the edge of the city of Stirling and is readily accessible to members and visitors from the city or the neighbourhood via the A9. Views from the course are splendid with the old city buildings as well as surrounding hills and mountains visible from the course. The ladies par for the course is 74 with an SSS of 73. It provides a good test of golf for all abilities with wide tree lined fairways along with some shorter challenging holes.

The Ladies Section of Stirling Golf Club has over 100 members with more than half of them playing regularly. The ladies committee organise a mixture of social events and golf during the year which brings together golfers as well as keeping in touch with some of the older lady members of the club who do not golf any more. Most competitive golf takes place on Tuesdays with some Sundays as well. Players have a wide range of competitions, team events, match

play and fun competitions to suit all tastes. There are some beautiful old trophies to play for as well as some newer ones. The first half of the season ends with the Club Championships in June when ladies compete for Scratch, Handicap or Bronze Trophies. A recent addition to the fixtures are some 9 hole competitions which allow ladies who are not able to play 18 holes for a variety of reasons the chance to keep their handicaps. During the season there are mixed competitions and in winter the Dolly Mixtures monthly competitions which all help to foster good relations between the ladies and gentlemen of the club, both on the course and socially. The ladies organise an individual Ladies’ Open tournament as well as a Senior Greensomes each year. There are also teams participating in local League matches with great success as well as national knockout competitions. During the past nine years four different teams from Stirling Ladies have won through to the finals of the Mail on Sunday

Classic in Spain, winning the Trophy in 2007.

The ladies’ Prize Giving Dinner and the Annual Business Meeting are both held in October to bring the main playing season to a close. This is followed by a Christmas Lunch in December. Keen golfers continue to play during the winter months and Ladies meet on a regular basis on Tuesdays for a 9 hole Stableford, weather permitting, and/or for coffee and lunch to keep in touch with friends. A pre season Social Evening is held in February or March and the season starts with Opening Day on the last Saturday of March with a Captain versus Vice captain’s team event. The ladies then join with the gents of the club for a Cocktail party in the evening.

The lady members at Stirling are a very friendly group and are always keen to welcome new golfers into their midst both on the course and for our social events. Fiona Campbell Ladies Captain.

The Ladies Section of Stirling Golf Club has over 100 members with more than half of them playing regularly. 9

Out & About......................... Here, in so many ways, is Scotland’s heart and soul. Stirling – Scotland’s newest city – is perhaps the place where our national heritage is most vividly recalled.

Always a meeting place of peoples, modern Stirling bustles with activity and offers fine shopping and leisure facilities to complement its many historic attractions. Stirling is also the ideal base from which to explore the nearby Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Stirling is the heritage capital of Scotland, and was awarded city status as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.

10

History seems very much alive in the streets of the Old Town, winding upwards to the castle, past the renovated Tolbooth – now a vibrant centre for the arts, the administrative heart of the renaissance burgh, and the Old Town Jail, an imposing 19th century prison, which is now a fascinating attraction presenting the horrors of life for inmates in a Victorian reform jail.

Stirling Castle, perched on its rocky crag surveying the surrounding land, is one of Scotland’s grandest. Its history is turbulent, its architecture outstanding. The restoration of the Great Hall took nearly 10 years to complete. Originally built during the reign of James IV, the exterior has been returned to its original golden yellow colour, by the traditional method of harling.

Next door stands the medieval Church of the Holy Rude, where James VI was crowned and John Knox preached the sermon. Argyll’s Lodging, a beautifully restored mansion house built in the 1570s and much extended by the 1st Earl of Stirling in 1632, is your last stop before reaching the top of the hill, and the Castle.

As a military stronghold, seven great battles – including the decisive moments of Scotland’s wars of independence – took place within sight of its walls. Later, for almost three centuries prior to the Union of the Crowns in 1603, it was a favourite royal residence. The quality of the buildings is superb, particularly the Great Palace, the Chapel Royal and the Renaissance Palace.

.....Stirling Area Guide Scottish Heroes

Housed in the castle is the Regimental Museum of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, which colourfully recounts the 200 year history of the famous regiment. On the castle esplanade is the Royal Burgh of Stirling Visitor Centre, offering a multi-lingual audio-visual tour through 1,000 years of Stirling’s history. The Smith Art Gallery and Museum also offers a fascinating introduction to the history of the area, as well as a popular programme of special exhibitions.

The historic theme continues with the striking National Wallace Monument, Scotland’s commemoration of its great hero, popularised in the Hollywood epic Braveheart. The Monument stands proudly on the Abbey Craig, overlooking the site of Sir William’s greatest victory, at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, in 1297.

Another legendary Scottish victory - the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 - is celebrated at the Bannockburn tm Heritage Centre, just two miles south Guardian Security urity The Security Provider n Sec The Centre recounts the ofGStirling. uardia story of this famous battle, as well Guardian Security offer only the highest as the life of King Robert, of whom a quality products from established suppliers. striking equestrian statue sits in the • wireless proximity security lock • cctv sytems grounds of the Centre.

Close by is the ruined Cambuskenneth Abbey, the scene of Bruce’s Parliament of 1326 and the burial place of King James III.

Modern Stirling is a cosmopolitan university city with a wide-ranging cultural life. Cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes abound, and the town centre offers excellent shopping opportunities in the pedestrianised streets or the covered Thistle Marches Centre.

The Course

1st Hole:- POLMAISE - Opening dogleg par 5, 478 yards to a plateau green, out of bounds left, trees right and the green is protected by two bunkers so fairway is a must if you want to make par or better.

2nd Hole:- TOWERS - Downhill par 4 293 yards, generally a prevailing wind which makes the green reachable for longer hitters, however fairway narrows the closer you get to the green. Two large bunkers protect the entrance to the green. 3rd Hole:- ROCKING STONE - Uphill par 4 345 yards, fairway bunkers left and right are in range so 3 wood may not be a bad choice to leave yourself 140 yards or so to a green with run offs left and short, an extra club for your second is advised. 4th Hole:- ELMS - 361 yard par 4, trees and out of bounds left so miss right if anything, fairway slopes from right to left, a decent drive will leave you 100 yards or so to a green protected by a long front right bunker. 5th Hole:- TREE OUT - 509 yard par 5, play slightly uphill and generally into wind so three shots will be needed, leave yourself a comfortable distance for your third as this is a double green you can leave yourself a very long putt. 14

6th Hole:- FLAGSTAFF - Short par three 155 yards with bunkers short right and left, and rough right and long so there is no margin for error. This hole can play one club less as it is slightly down hill and usually has a prevailing wind. 7th Hole:- CRAIGFORTH - 432 yards par four with bunkers down the left hand side of the fairway and trees protecting both sides, slightly downhill approach shot to a green protected by bunkers short right and left.

8th Hole:- GILLIESHILL - Uphill par 3 playing 192 yards, there are bunkers short right and long left of the green, a miss long right would leave you a fairly straight forward pitch and a good chance of getting up and down. 9th Hole:- THE BUTTS - Dogleg right par 4, 434 yards, the line is the big tree on the right of the fairway, a drive will generally land on the downslope to leave a short iron approach shot to a slightly plateau green with bunkers left and right, however there is a grassy knoll in the middle of the fairway 100 yards out so 3 wood from the tee may be a better choice.

10th Hole:- QUARRY - The superb 175 yard par 3 with panoramic views of the Carse of Stirling , there is out of bounds left and the green has two tiers and is protected by bunkers both right and left. 11th Hole:- SPIRES - Slight dogleg right par 4 410 yards, a drive down the left hand side will leave a better view of the green and an easier approach shot to a green with bunkers short and right. Everything that lands on the green will tend to roll towards the bunkers so left hand side of the green is the shot. 12th Hole:- BEN LOMOND - Straight forward par 4, 378 yards, plays slightly uphill with fairway bunkers left and right, a good tee shot will leave you a short iron to a green protected with a bunker short right. Left hand side of the fairway is advisable for an easier approach. 13th Hole:- MOUND - This 552 yard par 5 has a fairway sloping from right to left so a tee shot landing on the right half of the fairway should leave you in good position for your second shot, you are best to leave your third shot slightly further away than usual to take the fairway bunkers out of play and leave a straight forward shot to a green protected with bunkers both left and right.

14th Hole:- BALLENGEICH - Is a 172 yard par 3 protected with two bunkers on the right and two on the left of the green a miss right would leave a straight forward pitch from above the bunkers to a relatively flat green. 15th Hole:- COTTONS FANCY - A slight dogleg left 384 yard par 4 with fairway bunkers on the right hand side and trees left provides a tough tee shot with emphasis on accuracy, your second shot will play uphill to a small green so make sure you have enough club.

18th Hole:- CASTLE - This fantastic 514 yard par 5 has breath taking views of the Castle and the surrounding hills from a high tee, but don’t let the view put you off your shot as there is a fairway bunker right and trees left so accuracy is crucial, a lay up to around 100 yards is advised to leave yourself a full wedge shot as there is a bunker at the back of the green and also out of bounds.

John Crawford Course Manager

16th Hole:- BEN VENUE - Short par 4 at 331 yards with little trouble off the tee, a tee shot to the right hand side of the fairway will leave you a short and easy approach to a green slightly hidden by a small hill, play your cards right and you may make birdie. 17th Hole:- TREE IN - Slight dogleg left par 4 with trees left and rough right, the line is the tree on the left of the fairway to leave yourself a short iron to a green with relatively little trouble except from a bunker front left, this is a twin green so the right distance with an approach is crucial.

Practice Area The course has a small practice area for irons and short game. The practice area is situated underneath the castle and is around 250 yards long, has four bays (one for teaching), has three different yardage markers (100,150,200) and two short game greens with bunkers. There is also a practice putting green situated behind the practice area. Two practice nets allow golfers to use their driver before they step onto the first tee. 18

History

Stirling Golf Club is located in the historic Kings Park, under the walls of Stirling Castle and the ramparts of the Old Town. The Kings Park has been a Royal Park for the Kings and Queens of Scotland dating back over 800 years. Initially used for hunting, the earliest records show James IV played golf there as early as 1506. In 1869 Stirling Golf Club was formed, and the legendary Open Champion, Tom Morris Jnr. retained as Professional. In 1967, Sir Henry Cotton redesigned the course to the current layout, and initiated an extensive tree-planting programme. Mostly deciduous trees favoured to provide spring and autumn colour.

Stirling has developed into a golf course that is both a pleasure to play and a challenge to low and high handicappers alike. The greens are complemented by lush fairways, and the graded rough keeps play moving. The trees have matured and now present beauty and many a hazard.

Surrounded by a panoramic view of the Carse of Stirling, Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi and Ben Vorlich to the west, Stirling Castle and the Old Town to the north, the Ochils to the east, and the Touch hills to the south, the views are unique. Even on an off day, the visitor has much to admire.
