P ER M A N E N T C O L L E C T I O N S Worthing Museum and Art Gallery holds one of the most significant costume collections in the UK, as well as notable collections in fine and decorative arts, social history, toys and dolls, and archeology. There are around 30,000 pieces in the costume collection alone, Princess Amelia’s slippers and Queen Victoria’s underwear being just two examples. WMA hold over over a thousand dolls, and an ever growing toy collection. Some of the dolls are very unusual, like the Westwood ‘fertility doll’. We also have fine examples by many of the major makers from Jumeau to Meech and Bru to Pierotti. We have bears of every shape and size, games and puzzles dating back to the nineteenth century, and an enthralling collection of children’s books. The recent Colin Mears Bequest of children’s books and associated material has helped to make this collection one of the best in the country.

You can see selected items all year round within our permanent displays situated on the ground floor. Due to the shear volume of our collections not all of these items will be on display at any one time, if you would like to see something in particular when you visit please contact us in advance.

Psst...

If the object is not on display we will do our best to make it available for you to view. Please ask one of our friendly team when visiting the museum.

Safe European Home? (past, present, future)

Until Saturday 13th October 2018 “I’m literally putting gypsies on the map”, Damian Le Bas would say of his cartographic representations of Europe. Although seen from a Roma, Gypsy, Traveller perspective this ongoing project - which Damian and his wife Delaine have been showing throughout Europe since 2011 - encompasses their broader protest against the phantom of fascism which they believe to be stalking the continent. The title itself is taken from a Clash song, a band well-known for taking an antifascist stance.

Refusing to be history-blind, the pioneering work of Damian and Delaine Le Bas serves as a timely wake-up call to remind us that the human soul has no borders . First shown outside the parliament building in Vienna in 2011, Safe European Home? Comes back to the artists’ home town of Worthing. Tragically, Damian Le Bas died unexpectedly on 9th December 2017. This exhibition serves as a tribute to this extraordinarily talented, inventive, and uncompromising artist whose passion, spirit and revolutionary commitment lives on through his work. The journey continues. Archive material from WMA is also on display, as well as work by Alex Michon and photo installation by Julia Horbaschk.

Schooled at Slade Saturday 8th September 2018 to Saturday 6 April 2019

Since its foundation in 1871 the Slade School of Art has been a leading influence in the education of students of contemporary fine art. Schooled at Slade provides an opportunity for WMA to explore the work of some of the early teachers at the school, and the impact they had on their students. The museum holds a variety of their works, some familiar but others less often shown to the public. In this exhibition we examine the way teaching directed

the creativity of the students, influencing developments in the field of contemporary art, particularly in view of the remarkable talents that flowed through the doors of Slade in those early years. Schooled at Slade is guest-curated by volunteer Janet Green who has been photographing the fine art collection, and in particular those parts of the collection held in store. This exhibition brings together paintings, drawings, prints and archive material of those teachers who made such a mark on the world of art and their gifted students in the context of the turbulent first half of the twentieth century.

09/02/2018 Schooled at Slade gallery talk. 11am - 12pm, Free Volunteer, guest curator Janet Green talks about her selection for this exhibition. She’ll discuss her research and the themes that inspired her to develop Schooled at Slade from the museum’s collections.

Tank Girl

Continues until Sunday 27th January 2019 This display features work by Alan Martin who worked with Nadia and Nessy, founders of Creative Waves on the New Amusements project funded by Arts Council England. In addition to an exhibition on Worthing Pier featuring Tank Girl, Alan curated pieces from his collection of comic ephemera for this exclusive, extended display in the museum.

“Lucky people can see a very rare original copy of Atom Tan #1, printed on the Worthing Art College’s photocopier thirty years ago, featuring the first published work of Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett, and the very first appearance of the comic and movie icon Tank Girl” - Alan Martin

WWI Centenary: 100 Years Worthing Museum & Art Gallery will be marking the centenary of the end of World War I with mixed displays and a talk on Worthing during the war. Our displays will look at the training of soldiers at Shoreham Army Camp, the fighting conducted by the Royal Sussex Regiment, and of course the Home Front and the effects of the war on the people of Worthing. We will also have a talk, “Home Front & Front Line, which will include extracts from diaries in our collection.

AR C H A E O L O G Y We are very lucky in Worthing to have such a rich and varied historical past. Archaeologists have found evidence of human activity in the area dating back tens of thousands of years from the remains of woolly mammoths to rich Anglo-Saxon grave goods. However, Worthing isn’t widely known for its pre-18th century history, and we aim to change that at the museum through continuing to change and update our displays, encouraging research into our collections and digitalising part of the visitor experience in the archaeology galleries. Furthermore, in the near future we hope to have new and potentially groundbreaking information from our human remains, bringing us closer than ever to the individuals who called Worthing and the Downs home thousands of years ago.

Talks

Talks start at 18:30 and finish by 20:30 £7.50/talk, purchase all 8 and get 2 free! All talks include a glass of wine/tea/coffee and extensive object handling Sussex In The Stone Ages – From Mammoths to Monuments 11th October An in-depth talk on the early prehistory of Sussex. Looking at the early hominids that called this area home over 450,000 years ago, to the great woolly mammoths of the last ice age and through to the building and flint mining activities of modern humans. We will also look at the great local archaeologist John Henry Pull, who excavated nationally significant Neolithic material just north of Worthing. Bronze Age Worthing - Barrows, Beakers and Hoards 18th October Worthing was a very busy place during the Bronze Age. This talk will look at the beautiful metal hoards found locally as well as the farms and boundaries that lay beneath our feet. A number of our hoards will be available for handling after this talk. Roman Sussex – Legions, Roads & Villas 1st November The Romans conquered and ruled much of Europe and beyond for centuries, and Sussex was no exception. However, were these people truly invaders or were they invited in? This talk will cover all aspects of Roman rule in Sussex, from the building of roads, temples and villas, to the military garrisons along the coast. We have a particularly large amount of material available for handling after this talk, including parts of the famous Patching Hoard.

AR CHAEOL OGY

Saxon Worthing & The Kingdom of the South Saxons - 15th November The enigmatic Saxons came to Sussex at the fall of the Roman Empire, or perhaps even earlier. The nationally important cemetery at Highdown Hill helps us illuminate these people, their beautiful jewellery and deadly weaponry – but who were they really? Mercenaries, invaders, settlers or all three? Norman Sussex – Conquest, Castles & Towns - 22nd November We all know William the Conqueror beat King Harold at Hastings - but what happened in Sussex afterwards? This talk will look at the huge changes wrought upon the county by the incoming Normans, the construction of castles, the growth of towns and the beginnings of modern England. World War I – Home Front & Front Line - November 29th The First World War affected all who lived through those terrible years and the people of Worthing were no different. This talk will look at both the military and social aspects of the war, covering the training of soldiers on the Downs, the battles fought by the Royal Sussex Regiment and the problems on the Home Front. WWII – The Defence of Sussex in WWII - 6th December Sussex was on the frontline in 1940 – if the RAF had failed and the Wehrmacht had invaded the area would have been of major strategic importance to both sides. We will look at the defences themselves – pillboxes, anti-tank ditches and heavy guns sited on the Downs, along with aerial photographs taken by the Luftwaffe whilst planning their invasion. Eye-witness accounts and photographs of the period will form a part of this talk, and there will be a large selection of objects from the time available for handling afterwards. A Photographic History of Worthing - 13th December Our last talk in the series, looking at the modern history of Worthing through our photographic collection. Ranging from the 1860s up until the early 1990s, a huge range of photographs will be on display on the big screen, with explanations and the history of local sites explained. Our full collection of images will be available for perusal after the talk. along the ridgeline to Church Hill, the site of a 6500 year old flint-mining complex.

Breathtaking plans to transform Worthing Museum and Art Gallery Bold plans could see the museum become a national centre for costume research. It holds one of the most significant collections in the UK with over 30,000 items, most of which are stored due to lack of display space. Much of the conservation work on the collection takes place behind closed doors but this will be shown to the public in a new glass walled area under the proposal. Head of Culture Amanda O’Reilly said; “We’ve called this plan LET THE LIGHT IN because that’s exactly what it does. It opens up so much more of the museum and gallery enabling us to put more of our collections on display and expand our new education programme. “We are particularly excited by the proposal for a centre of excellence for costume, trading on our fantastic collection. We will be able to work with today’s designers, fashion students, makers, TV researchers, and costume historians to add real value to the museum and make it a nationally significant cultural destination.” Paul Appleton partner of architects Allies and Morrison said; “The Worthing Museum and Gallery is a splendid Edwardian building which, in recent years, has hidden many of its interior charms behind layers of plasterboard. Its fabulous collection has never quite been matched by the spaces in which they are displayed. LET THE LIGHT IN will reveal the character of the building and make the museum simpler to navigate encouraging visitors to return. The new garden entrance and courtyard cafe on Richmond Road will ensure that the museum takes its place, once again, as an important part of the cultural life of the town.”

They Shall Not Grow Old (15) Tue 16 Oct, 6pm (Approx. 90mins)

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the First World War, the world-renowned film-maker Peter Jackson has partnered with 14-18 Now and the Imperial War Museum to create a vision of the war in a way that’s never been seen before. Through a pain-staking re-coloration process, Peter Jackson has transformed original Imperial War Museum footage into something that looks as if it was filmed last week. This is not a documentary or history lesson, but a film that brings the people who fought in the war to life; a close-up of the characters and their camaraderie in the face of considerable danger, allowing audiences to experience, in high definition, this poignant and inspiring account of the human side of The Great War. The film will be followed by a satellite Q&A with Peter Jackson.
