HI FILM FANS, Well, now we are the other side of the summer and the big question is… How many times did you see MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN? The autumn is usually a slower paced period for films, a lot of great films that have played at festivals are released after the summer blockbusters. As a result we have Pawel Pawlikowski’s COLD WAR and Kelly Macdonald in PUZZLE. There’s an all-star cast in the big screen adaptation of Chekov’s THE SEAGULL. We still have some Hollywood pizazz with films like MILE 22, THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS and THE NUN. There’s some great music based films with Lady Gaga starring in A STAR IS BORN and Queen biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Everyone’s favourite bumbling detective returns in JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN. There’s so much more on offer, including 15 Screen Arts events and some brilliant one-offs in our SCALARAMA season.

I can’t wait to see the Nicholas Cage Triple Bill on the big screen, but of the new releases I am most excited for BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE from director Drew Goddard.

Turtletaub’s nuance as a producer has been clearly shown on films like LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, SUNSHINE CLEANING and SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. Kelly Macdonald is a delight as always, and it’s great to see Indian actor Irrfan Khan breaking through to English language films after being such a huge star in his home country.

BUZZ One of the main reasons we are excited for this film is

the excellent cast. Saoirse Ronan hasn’t set a foot wrong with amazing performances in the last couple of years. The Seagull is one of Anton Chekhov’s most famous and acclaimed plays, yet this is the first time it has been directly adapted for the big screen.

Marketing Manager ‘Chekhov is one of my favourite playwrights, so it’s exciting to see The Seagull in the cinema. I think the mixture of comedy / tragedy and the profound ironies make me appreciate this story. The cast is awesome in particular Saoirse Ronan and Elisabeth Moss; I loved Ladybird and I am only just getting over the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale!

Jack Black is always a fun watchable actor delivering offbeat performances and here is bouncing off Cate Blanchett in a bonkers way!

BUZZ Lance Daly delivers a film that avoids cliche and focuses on the raw emotion of this harrowing period of history. There is a great cast here including newcomer Barry Keoghan from DUNKIRK alongside the big names. Jim Broadbent as always nearly steals the show.

SPOTLIGHT The title Black ‘47 refers to the Summer of 1847 of the Great Famine in Ireland. A period of mass starvation estimated to have taken the lives of 1 million and caused another million to emigrate.

This was caused by potato blight which ravaged crops throughout the country.

As an actor he’s been directed by some of the best, including David O. Russell, Clint Eastwood and Cameron Crowe so let’s hope that he was learning from the masters.

Venue Hires Administrator A classic film which has been reinterpreted for audiences since the original in 1937. Each generation has a Star, it will be exciting to see how Lady Gaga makes the role her own. I am excited to see how the film has been interpreted for today’s audience and to hear the new soundtrack!

The Live Aid sequence looks absolutely phenomenal, but the strength of the film lies in its depiction of the relationships between the strong characters that made up Queen. Through good times and bad, the band managed to secure a legacy that continues to inspire to this day.

SPOTLIGHT Sasha Baron Cohen was originally cast as Freddie, but left after a disagreement with Brian May. Once Rami Malek was cast and shooting underway, director Bryan Singer had to leave the film early to concentrate on family and EDDIE THE EAGLE director Dexter Fletcher finished the film.
