South Dartmoor Community College

The core guiding principle that lies at the heart of everything done at South Dartmoor Community College is to encourage and develop personal responsibility among all members of our community. The college believes in empowering students to take control of their own learning and their own lives so they know how to make good choices and also have the ability to thrive in a fast moving, ever changing world. By creating a learning environment that has high expectations of everyone – and by modelling the behaviour the college expects from its students – it can provide the stepping-stones that bring dreams closer to reality. South Dartmoor has a well-deserved reputation as one of Devon’s leading schools, and is extremely proud of the education and opportunities it provides. With an academic offer that has seen four consecutive years of the best exam outcomes in the school’s history, the journey together starts with an extensive transition programme. Care and focus upon each individual is enhanced through strong pastoral care and teaching. The college has a specialist focus on sport – from a vast extra-curricular programme to its elite sports academy. It is the only SW college in partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. It is particularly proud of its girls’ cricket team which has made two National Finals in two years, and its hockey team, which were national indoor champions – all competing against both the state and private sector. The Performing Arts are central to college life, with students committed to many ensembles and performances during the year. South Dartmoor Community College benefits from dedicated specialist facilities and offers a wide range of opportunities from an annual production, Percussion Academies, Contemporary Dance, instrumental tuition and more.

eering Centre, opened in 2015, was to provide a brand new building at its North Devon Campus for students on a wide range of hospitality, catering, lifestyle and tourism courses. The new development will house luxurious walk-in public hair and beauty salons and a glass-fronted restaurant, as well as advanced flexible teaching spaces. “I’m very much looking forward to the grand opening of our Lifestyle and Tourism Centre,” said Principal Diane Dimond. “The new facility will provide the local community with high quality, affordable public facilities, whilst giving our students vital opportunities to engage with customers and gain valuable experience to take forward into employment.”

UTC Plymouth

A new year can bring lots of exciting changes – and there’s none greater than learning new things and pushing the boundaries of your education. Attend the UTC Plymouth Years 10 and 12 open day on Thursday, January 28, at 5.30pm, and visit the cutting-edge college to see how it can make a positive change in your education. UTC Plymouth is the perfect choice for students with an interest in science and engineering. Just like other schools, it teaches traditional core subjects. However, what makes it different is that greater emphasis is placed on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), offering a practical education alongside a classroom one. UTC Plymouth provides a unique learning experience, allowing students to choose from a number of pathways including GCSEs, A Levels, and BTECs, in addition to a wide range of extracurricular activities. With links to some of the region’s biggest employers and Plymouth University, it is able to put you onto the next path in your career, whether it’s work or further education. Having received its first set of results last summer after opening the doors in 2013, UTC Plymouth celebrated an overall pass rate of 97 per cent at A-level.

St Joseph’s

As a fully co-educational Independent day school for boys and girls age three to 16, St Joseph’s offers a broad, challenging and highquality education with excellent pastoral care and extensive extra-curricular opportunities. The school has expanded its facilities in recent years to include an all-weather pitch and iPad technology throughout. St Joseph’s is a small school which means that it is possible to keep sight of strong family values, which gives children the confidence necessary to succeed and allows both staff and pupils to work positively together. In 2015, 96% of students achieved 5 A*-C grades, including Maths and English. As the school has no entrance examination to join, this is a truly exceptional performance.
