As we approach the end of another eventful year, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your continuing support for Marketing Humber and the fantastic region in which we all work, rest, study and play.

It has been wonderful to see so many of you back out at in-person events - a truly optimistic sign of times gradually moving on after such a difficult couple of years. You, as our cherished Bondholders, are at the heart of everything we do. We are bursting with pride to endorse, champion and serve you. We simply wouldn’t exist without you.

I am pleased here to be granted an opportunity to look back at all that has been achieved over the past 12 months, while looking forward to 2023 and, all things being well, another year of productive and enjoyable partnership with you all.

2022 has been another exciting, if challenging, chapter in the evolving story of the Humber, with page turners including huge global investment announcements and innovative local growth and collaboration. The region’s distinctive position as the UK’s Energy Estuary, and it’s critical role in the necessary transition to net zero, continues to present momentous opportunities for our businesses and communities.

The past year has seen the successful launch of Oh Yes! Net Zero, huge strides being made towards the green production of hydrogen in the Humber, and the world’s largest carbon removals deal. And of course,

the Marketing Humber programme has centred on consistent and inspiring place promotion, fulfilled through our strategic partnerships, our powerful PR, and our excellent marketing materials.

We have continued to bring together the region’s most dynamic and influential businesses with key partners, unifying the Humber’s voice on the global stage. We have connected and collaborated with many strategic partners, including our Local Authorities, LEPs, the Humber Energy Board, Make UK, the CBI, Humber Freeport and Opportunity Humber, all of which helps to shine a spotlight on the fantastic investment and growth opportunities in our region.

Our materials library has continued to grow as a result, with a range of fabulous new digital and print resources. Key deliveries include The Humber 2030 Vision, a muchlauded collaborative resource launched in the House of Lords which showcases the region’s astonishing £15 billion portfolio of decarbonisation projects.

I am especially pleased that we were able to reinstate our in-person events programme for 2022, filled with

“WE ARE DELIGHTED THAT OUR CLOSE PARTNERS, THE CBI HAS CHOSEN THE HUMBER AS ITS FIRST NATIONAL CLUSTER DEMONSTRATOR REGION”.

Bondholder Breakfasts and Industry Insights, providing our brilliant Bondholder businesses of all shapes and sizes with opportunities to take centre stage, tell their stories, and ignite meaningful conversations and connections.

Our Humber Business Week launch event prioritised the challenges Bondholders told us they increasingly face in terms of talent and skills. Delegates were actively engaged in discovering innovative solutions to upskilling dilemmas, changing employee expectations, and talent acquisition challenges. The event doubled up as the launch of our new recruitment guide, Your Time, which we produced to support regional employers and education providers in attracting and retaining top talent.

A particular highlight was our Bondholder Ambassador Celebration in the summer, which brought together a glittering array of Bondholders, from founding Bondholders to new recruits, and provided an opportunity to proudly celebrate our many collaborative successes over the years.

The year’s events programme saw the ground-breaking Waterline Summit, delivered for a fourth fabulous year. The flagship summit enabled businesses large and small to come together with academics, industry experts and young people from around the world, as the Humber united to showcase why its collective journey from negotiation to implementation is integral to the UK achieving its 2050 net zero target.

The brilliant Young Talent Network continues to thrive, providing peer-to-peer networking and personal and

professional development opportunities. It is the only network of its kind in the region and I am proud of the work it does to enable the creation of strong cross-industry connections and engaging our future leaders.

As a year of myriad successes reaches a close, I am delighted to share this delivery report with you. While times remain challenging, in an ever-changing number of ways, it is as crucial as ever that we continue to share one voice for the Humber, and that our collaborative community unites to promote and celebrate a region in which we can live, learn and prosper. We at Marketing Humber Bondholders stand ever ready to do all that we can in 2023 to help achieve that on your behalf.

We will address our region’s big challenges and opportunities including skills, talent and recruitment, and technology, all while we continue to accelerate towards net zero. And we will always hold you, our fabulous Bondholders, at the heart of everything we do.

Thanks again for your continuing support. It is hugely appreciated by the small yet fabulously talented and dedicated Marketing Humber team. Our ambitious programme, delivered to showcase this dynamic region on the national and international stage, would not be possible without your commitment and enthusiasm. I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2023 and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Warmest wishes, Bill

Bondholder Ambassador Celebration

Leading a Food Revolution

Held in the gardens of Mercure Grange Park in Willerby, our ambassador celebration event allowed us to personally thank our Bondholders for their incredible support over the years.

Founding Bondholders reminisced about where the Bondholder journey began, new recruits made important new connections, and all those inbetween celebrated our regions collective successes.

Our Bondholder ambassadors enjoyed delicious canapes, drinks and fantastic live entertainment from Back on Track.

Local artist Alex Hunt, created a magnificent selifie window, in the shape of wings, depicting core landmarks and all those brilliant things that make our region so distinctive.

In partnership with Team Lincolnshire, we brought Humber and Greater Lincolnshire’s business communities together for the first time, to explore what matters most right now in the food and drink sector.

Over 100 delegates, including industry leaders, academics, culinary experts and ambitious local businesses from across both region’s descended on Doubletree Hilton, Forest Pines in Scunthorpe. To discuss the biggest challenges facing their sector, highlighting regional success stories and sharing their vision for the future of food.

12 exhibitors joined the event, to share their stories, products and produce with delegates. Refreshments were sponsored by Lincoln’s Stoke’s Tea and Coffee, and South Cave-based Drewton’s created a deluxe grazing table comprised of some of the region’s most outstanding, delicious and highest-quality local produce.

G.F. Smith - Part of Tech Week Humber

Delegates joined us for a unique behind the scenes experience to discover how G.F Smith has built its outstanding reputation of maker and curator of the world’s finest papers, and what it is that makes the business a true cut above the rest.

Gareth Sheekey, Finance Director, and Ben Watkinson, Creative Director, discussed how the perhaps unassuming Hull-based company is a market-leader, and has a place in the global luxury brand and design community as provider to some of the most recognisable names out there.

Delegates were taken on a tour of the site, led by Josh Williams and Dave Power of the Business Development Team. The tour included a visit to the factory and samples room, with the opportunity to see envelope-making, CAD and duplex printing processes.

The biggest takeaway for delegates was that pride was so evident in the workforce – the people behind G.F Smith love what they do, love the business, and love Hull.

Brought to you by Marketing Humber and the University of Hull with event partner Phillips 66, the fourth Waterline Summit was held on 17th-19th October in the Aura Innovation Centre at Bridgehead Business Park, in the heart of the Humber region.

Over three days, businesses large and small joined academics, industry experts and young people, to learn, discuss and tackle the greatest challenge of our time.

With a clear focus on both action and change, the event empowered delegates with information, resources and enablers for action, while also inspiring them with case studies, expert advice and real-world business support. Highlighting the critical need for delivery, the Humber region showcased why its move from negotiation to implementation is integral to the UK achieving its 2050 net zero target.

The Waterline launch, an interactive panel event was once again hosted by renowned television presenter and broadcast journalist Louise Minchin, who asked hard hitting questions of our national and regional experts about what matters to you in our region’s journey to net zero.

The Waterline Live provided the latest overview of the state of the planet, how climate change is impacting the UK and the global relevance of the Humber’s response in the ‘race to zero’ through decarbonisation of industry, energy transition with offshore wind expansion and Hydrogen development, plus growth of carbon capture, utilisation and storage networks. We heard how the critical mass of initiatives here is being recognised on a world stage as the Humber emerges not just as a UK but also an international exemplar in its response to the threats and opportunities.

THE STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE

Marketing Humber and the University of Hull, along with The Waterline Student Sustainability Challenge 2022 sponsors, Equinor and SSE Thermal, were delighted to welcome finalists of the challenge and schools and colleges from across the region to The Waterline Summit 2022 on Monday 17th October.

The event centred around the Awards Ceremony and celebration for this year’s Waterline Student Sustainability Challenge, and included a keynote speech from guest speaker, Ed Clancy OBE of Team GB, plus interactive exhibitions and experiences hosted by key regional businesses to give students an insight into exciting updates, projects and opportunities in sustainability across the Humber.

The Waterline Student Sustainability Challenge gave students aged 9-18 across the Humber region the chance to make a positive impact on communities and the environment by creating inspiring solutions to harmful climate problems.

Students from across the region created a range of innovative ideas and Finalists were selected from a shortlist of high-quality entries following presentations to the judging panel in July.

The panel was made up of business representatives Richard Royal, Equinor; Jade Fernandez, SSE Thermal; Stephen Munn, Absolutely Cultured; Emma Lingard, Associated British Ports; Caroline Morris, KCOM; Lauren Little, Orsted, and Eve Pierrepont, Yorkshire Water.

The Waterline Summit saw the Overall Winner of the challenge crowned, alongside Year 10-13 Age Category Winner.

The Finalist teams were each praised for their innovative, unique ideas, and their hard-work and commitment to their projects, receiving £250 and a VIP experience with a judging panel business. The experiences include workshops, mentoring and behind-the-scenes site visits.

Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire’s Year 9 Loyal Leaders were chosen by the judging panel as the Overall Winner. The team developed an energy pledge to share within and outside of the college, explored methods of reducing energy consumption within the college and worked to secure savings of a third on college energy bills, working with senior managers and leadership team.

The team won £2,000 to put towards developing their eco plans within the college, plus a unique opportunity to visit an Equinor facility in Norway, with challenge sponsor.

The Year 10-13 Age Category Winner, Wyke College’s Conserve2Preserve, was chosen for producing an excellent, runner-up project. The team created the concept of a social networking app, through which users are able to receive daily sustainability tips, and track carbon emissions in real time, while being able to see the impact on their community and local area.

The event offered invaluable insights into how to get out there and network fearlessly, including how to approach new conversations, and how to get the most out of them.

Attendees heard how to build good connections both in person and online, and Ruby explained why forming new and strengthening existing relationships has huge potential to make a considerable, positive difference to yourself and your career development.

Ruby outlined how it is possible to make the most of all opportunities to meet, connect and have a lasting impact. It was fantastic to see the effect Ruby’s advice had on attendees, as the session was followed by an energetic room full of conversation and ideas.

The training was delivered interactively with practical exercises, participation from attendees and the opportunity for questions and discussion, using Mentimeter, by Yvonne Sharp, a fullyqualified Mind trainer.

According to Mind, one in six people will experience a mental health problem at work in any given week. Often, the people they are surrounded by will have no idea. If they do, they may not know how to help.

The partnership with HEY Mind for this event placed mental health at the forefront, reminding employees and employers of the importance of wellbeing in the workplace.
