Raising our standards

Welcome to TEFAF 2016. TEFAF constantly monitors and raises its exacting standards and commitment to quality. There will be 269 exhibitors, including new faces in TEFAF Haute Joaillerie, TEFAF Paper, TEFAF Modern and TEFAF Antiques. To complement TEFAF Modern, the fair will again have a section curated by a guest curator. This year it is the highly regarded Amsterdam-based Mark Kremer. He has made a selection of artists and invited their

representing galleries to showcase their works at TEFAF. Everything is for sale. One of TEFAF’s unique features is the creation of a space where collectors can easily locate objects in their chosen field and at the same time encounter the new and unexpected. With this in mind, some sections of the floor plan have been improved for TEFAF 2016 – for instance a new design for the Entrance Hall giving dual access to the fair, direct access to the Antiques sections from the main entrance area, a more spacious and visible entrance to TEFAF Paper, incorporating lifts, and new catering areas. The TEFAF Art Symposium on Friday 11 March 2016 will include the annual TEFAF Art Market Report presented by Dr Clare McAndrew. We would like to thank Jo Cortenraedt and his team for all their efforts in the production of this Maastricht Guide. Have a wonderful and successful TEFAF 2016. Willem van Royen Chairman TEFAF Maastricht

TEFAF and Maastricht forever

Visitors from all over the world are wrapped in a blanket of warm hospitality when they visit our splendid city on the Meuse. Maastricht is a city of savoir vivre, a place characterised by quality. Maastricht is not to be missed. Maastricht and TEFAF have been inextricably linked for almost 30Â years and as far as I am concerned that relationship can continue forever. When

Maastricht hosts TEFAF, everything in the city revolves around this most prestigious art fair in the world. We should cherish the excellent relations between TEFAF and Maastricht. Come and enjoy the splendid atmosphere of this international university city with its charming ancient centre. The Maastricht Treaty signed here in 1992 marked the birth of the European Union. Next year we will be celebrating this silver jubilee. Let me draw your attention to the splendid DURING TEFAF festival. In addition to the art on display in MECC Maastricht, discover what our city and the region have to offer when it comes to music, drama and dance. National and international entertainment at its best. Maastricht welcomes the world! Annemarie Penn-te Strake Mayor of Maastricht

Welcome to TEFAF Maastricht, welcome to Limburg

TEFAF Maastricht stands for Excellence, Expertise and Elegance. As King’s Commissioner in the Province of Limburg and as a resident of Maastricht, I think you’ll definitely find these three Es in Maastricht, Limburg and the Euregion with Maastricht as a joyous, exuberant and elegant international city of the Low Countries. And Limburg has a lot to offer in excellence and expertise as well. This year, we will be celebrating the 40th birthday of Maastricht University. It is the Netherlands’ youngest, most international university. Partly due to the establishment of Maastricht

University, the city has a strong connection between education, research, government and business. And Limburg is evolving more and more into a cross-border centre of excellence. With the Brightlands campuses, we have joined high-level expertise in our province when it comes to performance, bio-based and biomedical materials, food, health and smart services. Such an international breeding ground can only flourish in an environment with such a rich culture. That is why we cherish events that stimulate the senses and feed the mind. I am thus incredibly proud of the fact that TEFAF continues to opt for Maastricht. And I am proud that TEFAF offers us the opportunity to present Limburg, Maastricht and the Euregion to an international audience that values Excellence, Expertise and Elegance. Welcome to TEFAF Maastricht. Welcome to Limburg. Theo Bovens King’s Commissioner in the Province of Limburg

Show Your Wound is the title of the special contemporary art presentation in the TEFAF Modern sector. It is the sequel to 2015’s Night Fishing. The title refers to Joseph Beuys’s work of the same name in an underground passage in Munich, made in 1974. With this work, Beuys touches on themes like death, mortality and empathy. The artists selected for Show Your Wound will each express these themes in their own way. Initiator Hidde van Seggelen: “The inten-

tion is not to redo Beuys’s work, but to portray these themes in a unique way. It’s about making a gesture, for a good feeling, responsibility, and nature.” For the initiative, curator Mark Kremer was asked to select the artists and their work. “He made the main selection, but I was involved in the process; an exhibit like that is really a joint effort.” These works will be for sale at TEFAF as well, but will be on display for the visitors in an exposition-like setting. In many cases, the works are by artists that have never before been represented at TEFAF. The wound mainly has symbolic meaning and is a frequently recurring motive in European art history. There will most definitely be a connection between modern and historic art at the fair. M A A S T R I C H T GUIDE

Expo’s Grayson Perry Hold Your Beliefs Lightly Location: Bonnefantenmuseum www.bonnefanten.nl 26.02.2016 – 05.06.2016

Bonnefantenmuseum presents a major solo exhibition of Grayson Perry (1960), one of the most famous artists in Britain today. The eccentric Perry, also known as the “heterosexual transvestite potter”, likes to present himself as a thorn in the side of the mainstream art world. His work uses a huge variety of techniques and materials, and includes tapestries, ceramics, cast iron sculptures, films, dresses and even a complete house. In his work, aesthetic questions of beauty and craftsmanship are played out keenly in relation to social issues. Ferran Adrià Notes on Creativity Location: Marres www.marres.org 10.03.2016 – 03.07.2016 PREMIERE EUROPE

A unique exhibition on the highly acclaimed El Bulli creations from the legendary chef Ferran Adrià, on view for the first time presented in Europe in the city of Maastricht. Olive oil caviar, asparagus beer, Parmesan foam, the soup fragrance spoon: these are only a handful of examples of the revolutionary creations by the world-renowned and widely celebrated Ferran Adrià of 34

the legendary restaurant El Bulli. The exhibition Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity is a homage to Adrià’s exploration of creativity and how this quest led to his revolutionary cuisine. It is filled with hundreds of colourful drawings, sketches, Plasticine models, collages, large-scale photos, provocative recipes and menus, unique cutlery and unusual cooking utensils, and includes a film of the nearly two thousand dishes prepared by Adrià and his team in their more than twenty years at El Bulli. Alain Laboile La famille Location: Centre Céramique www.centreceramique.nl 01.12.2015 – 20.03.2016 PREMIERE EUROPE

The first major exhibition ofAlain Laboile in Europe. Never before were so many of Laboile’s creations on display in a single exhibition. The black-and-white photographs of Laboile fascinate immensely. They are timeless, universal and recognizable. The photographs of his children and an idyllic life outdoors revoke melancholy and longing. Melancholy about hot summers and endless days being outdoors. We see a world we rarely encounter nowadays. Laboile’s children are playing in the river behind the house, in the self-built bamboo forest, with old car tires, with frogs, the many cats and even a fawn. They climb on their father’s sculp-

tures, make campfires and swim in the self-dug pool. Les Deux Garçons PURE Location: Museum aan het Vrijthof www.museumaanhetvrijthof.nl 06.03.2016 – 06.06.2016

The first retrospective exhibition of the Dutch artist duo ‘Les Deux Garçons’. Sculptures of taxidermy, bronze pictures, and a mix of technical objects demonstrate the artists’ diversity. The ‘Les Deux Garçons’ atelier is formed by the artists Roel Moonen (born 1966) and Michel Vanderheijden van Tinteren (born 1965), both of whom hail from the Dutch province of Limburg. They met in Maastricht and have been working together since 2000. The duo enjoys international fame with their sculptures of taxidermy, giving stuffed animals an anthropomorphic air. Their work is truly mesmerizing. Copycats / Biomimicry Nature as a model, mentor, and measure Location: Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht www.nhmmaastricht.nl 12.12.2015 - 29.05.2016

Visitors to the Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht can look at, learn about, and be in awe of the wonders of the natural world. Come along to learn about biomimicry and the many technical applications that are based on naturally

occurring designs. This branch of science searches for inspiration for new inventions, embodying the art of imitating the best ideas nature has to offer in order to solve human problems. Open Studios Location: Jan van Eyck www.janvaneyck.nl 10.03.2016 - 12.03.2016

40 artists, designers, architects, writers and poets will be presenting their work in their studios, the exhibition spaces and other areas of the Van Eyck. They all have had a one-year stay (or thereabout) at the institute. The results of their residency, which comprises both individual and collaborative work, will be on show and testify to the stance and possibilities of the Van Eyck. Balthasar van der Ast More beautiful than reality Location: Suermondt-LudwigMuseum (Aachen - Germany) www.suermondt-ludwigmuseum.de 10.03.2016 – 05.06.2016

An unique exhibition of Balthasar van der Ast’s still-life paintings (1593/94-1657). Raimund Hoghe Quartet Theater aan het Vrijthof

In De macht der theaterlijke dwaasheden Fabre unfolds the principles of power. While referring to Foucault, he points out the systematics of discipline. The actors’ physical endurance is continuously strained. The uniformity of movement and clothing takes over any form of individuality. Order and subservience are dominating. Raimund Hoghe Quartet (Dance) Location: Theater aan het Vrijthof www.theateraanhetvrijthof.nl 18.03.2016: 20:00h DUTCH PREMIERE

A journey through different cultures. Since 1989 Raimund Hoghe, former dramaturge of Pina Bausch, creates productions for dancers and actors. In 1992 he teamed up with Luca Giacomo Schulte who has been his artistic partner ever since. Hoghe created this production with four of his favorite dancers and one

guest-dancer. In Quartet he portrays their diversity of cultures and backgrounds. The other leading roles are for Schuberts Der Tod und das Mädchen and Händels Sarabande and are combined with Japanese folklores and songs of American musicals. Quartet is a journey through different eras and cultures. Cie D’ici P Phasme (Dance) Location: Theater aan het Vrijthof www.theateraanhetvrijthof.nl 19.03.2016: 20:30h DUTCH PREMIERE

Phasme is based on the female portraits of the Belgian painter Michaël Borremans. This performance is the second part of Variations sur l’immobile of the Wallonia choreographer Fré Werbrouck. The worlds of Borremans’ characters seem to be empty. Women tend to be lonely and quiet. The portraits show melancholia and distance. However the missing ‘storytelling’ context invites us to look beyond the image and triggers our fantasy. Dancer Lise Vachon shapes in short episodes what inspires these women. Rossini went on to write five Farsa comica but it is without doubt La Scala di Seta that turned out to be the most memorable one. As it happens, while its public success was immediate, the work was soon afterwards forgotten until after the Second World War. And while La Scala di Seta went on to inspire ensuing comic operas, it no less remains an exciting work that the Opéra Royal de Wallonie is proud to present for the first time. Christopher Franklin will be the conductor. This will be the opportunity to discover, for the first time in Liège, Damiano Michieletto, a producer of international renown. And while the work is a premiere, it will also be a first on the stage in Liège for Mariangela Sicilia, a soprano with a subtle voice who will be supported by the acting of Ioan Hotea, a young virtuoso tenor, and by Enrico Marabelli.

CONSERVATION OF ART AND HERITAGE OBJECTS 68

a job for highly specialized professionals

TEFAF is an extraordinary temporary showcase for the artistic legacy of mankind. In general, the majority of art and heritage objects can be considered unique and irreplaceable. Besides financial value, they represent historic, aesthetic and emotional values. Unfortunately, these objects are continuously threatened by natural degradation as a result of extreme climate conditions, high light levels and biological attack. Reasons for damage and sometimes total loss of the original appearance are also neglect and human interventions, especially by insufficiently educated self-made ‘restorers’. “Nowadays, conservator-restorers are educated at university level and are submitted to stringent professional codes of ethics, in order to prevent these errors and to guarantee safe and durable treatment”, René Hoppenbrouwers, director of Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, explains. SRAL is the largest independent fine art conservation studio and research center in The Netherlands and is located next to the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. “Our institute often encounters objects that have suffered from I N M A A S T RI C H T A N D S U R RO U N D I N G A R E A S . former restorations executed in an amateurish or unskilled way. Conservation-restoration is an unprotected profession and this is a global problem. Only a handful of countries have laws preventing insufficiently educated people to intervene in irreplaceable historic works of art. It is incomprehensible that politicians do not feel the need to draft protective legislation. They rather leave this to ‘the field’ resulting in weak professional regulations or non-functioning accreditation systems.” As the vice-chair of the European Network of Conservation-Restoration Education (ENCoRE), representing 38 academic conservation education programmes,

IBA PARKSTAD

International Building Exhibition The IBA concept has built up a great reputation in Germany. IBA (Internationale Bau Ausstellung - International Building Exhibition) began at the start of the 20th century as an exhibition for modern architecture, but has since grown into a powerful creative model providing a significant economic, social, and cultural impetus within regions aiming at transition or transformation, such as Parkstad, 25km east of Maastricht. IBA symbolises the high-quality projects that make a significant contribution to this transformation and transition.

IBA does not do any construction work itself; it manages processes. It is laying the foundations for a new orientation towards the future which will drive social change. Put simply, IBA helps to improve a town, city or region. IBA gives them a boost. Culture plays a key role in this transformation process. Parkstad has an exceptional cultural history: the churches and monasteries in the former mining region are eye-catching monuments in the rolling hills. The buildings are of

invaluable significance to the region’s identity. Though many of them no longer have their original function, they should be maintained for the future. That applies especially to the area’s industrial heritage, where just a few buildings remain. Nevertheless, these buildings are often of immense architectural value.

Düsseldorf

Antwerp The fashion capital of Belgium, thanks to the famous Antwerp Six. Because of these fashion designers, including Dries van Noten, all eyes were on the runways of this city in the eighties. Nowadays, Antwerp still invests in fashion. Well-known fashion and designer shops abound in creativity. Nationalestraat is a must-see, with Modepaleis from Dries Noten and Yohji Yamamoto’s shop. In Leopoldstraat and Schuttershofstraat, you will find the big luxury brands: Jimmy Choo, Hermès, Burberry, Paul Smith, Louis Vuitton and Delvaux. Leopoldstraat is also known for its antiques and home decorations. Modern galleries and beautiful exclusive design and furniture shops can be found around Vlaamse- and Waalsekaai in the upcoming Zuid neighbourhood. It is also a very nice neighbourhood to have a drink and a bite to eat.

A city of world class and luxurious grandeur. If you want to go shopping in Düsseldorf, there is actually only one must-see: the stunning Köningsallee, also known as Kö. It measures up to the biggest boulevards of the world. Luxury designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander, Giorgio Armani, Prada and Tod’s are side by side. In addition to fashion, there are also antique shops, jewellers and book shops. Watching the stylish, original fashion lovers that walk around here is a treat in itself. Around Ackerstrasse, Lorettostrasse or in Unterbilk, you will find the smaller trendy boutiques. The modern Stilwerk building on Grünstrasse is heaven for furniture and design shop lovers. The Altstad is a nice place to have a famous Alt beer: go to Füchsen or Uerige. On and around Immermannstrasse there are lots of Japanese supermarkets, book shops and restaurants. Düsseldorf is home to one of the biggest Japanese communities of Europe. M A A S T R I C H T GUIDE

Art ride through the hills of Limburg

92

For my annual exhibit in TEFAF, I will be travelling from London to Maastricht at the beginning of March. The route will pass through Dover, Calais, and Brussels. On my way to Limburg, I will be passing countless grey viaducts in Belgium. As I pass by, I often happen to see a lonely cyclist leaning over his carbon bike while charging over the viaduct, his

helmet glistening in spring sunlight. I envy that image. This year will be the second time I’m exhibiting at TEFAF individually; before this, I worked for Ben Janssens for years. It’s great to be surrounded by nature and stay just outside of Maastricht since during the fair, you spend your days inside and then go out until late at night. That’s why I stay with my assistant and guests at a house in the Voerstreek, which just beyond the Belgian border, but only 15 minutes from Maastricht. I often start my day with a short bike ride. At half past seven in the morning, it’s very quiet and the Voerstreek’s hilly landscape is still covered in dew. You can catch the first rays of the sun over Schophemerheide and Kattenroth, little roads running right along the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. One of the night’s last badgers crosses the road making his way to his sett, and Farmer Castermans and his son are working a couple fields over. In Lanaken I cycle along the bakery’s fully stocked windows. It bears quite the contrast to the window of the patisserie on the corner of Piccadilly and St. James’s Street in London, but it all looks just as delicious. These two weeks in Maastricht are all about top-quality art but also the nightly festivities. It’s not just about

the essential fresh air. I get the chance to burn off the lavish meal at Café Sjiek the night before. Last year, we at the TEFAF organisation were very warmly received by the Preveneur Tour, an annual cycling event where professional cyclists and cycling entrepreneurs are generously taken care of by local hotels and restaurants. For those with some extra air, it’s always fun to chat with the Tour guests while the pack climbs the hills surrounding Maastricht. For the first time, this year Paul Seib from TEFAF’s main sponsor AXA is organising a short cycling tour during the fair for a select group of art lovers, led by ex-pro turned photographer Leon van Bon. It’s promising to be a great ‘Art ride’. Hidde van Seggelen TEFAF exhibitor, stand 501 Organiser of TEFAF Curated: TEFAF Show your Wound Board Member

BIG IN POTENTIAL

Chapeau Magazine has selected some of the most pleasant and gastronomic restaurants

For already two thousand years Maastricht has been a European melting pot, there where the great German and Latin cultures rub against each other. Nestled in the lovely Limburgian hills, in the heart of an Euregion where 4 million people are living in 3 countries I N M A A S T RI C H T A N D S U R RO U N D I N G A R E A S . and are speaking 4 languages. From that energy emerges a city, bursting of creativity, of researchers and of makers. A city of encounters and bon vivants. An international university city, a compact city with allure, the most intimate metropolis on earth. TEFAF, globally known as the Maastricht fair, adds to the international character of the city, but there is more. Maastricht is a city whose history stretches back to Roman times. Its origin is due to the necessity of defending the bridge which the Romans built over the river. They started a settlement that grew into a city. Maastricht was for ages and ages a military, religious, trading and finally an industrial centre in this part of Europe. The first bishop in the Netherlands, Saint Servatius, lived here in the fourth century. In the beginning of the nineteenth century it became the first industrialized city in the Netherlands and until far into that century the city stayed a military fortress, lying strategically between different European powers for

Where talent can flourish. A truly student oriented research university. The other celebration is the 25th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty. Hosting the European summit in December 1991 and the actual signing of the Treaty on the 7th of February 1992 marked this city as the birthplace of the modern European Union and the Euro. Of course this fact had a very positive effect on the notoriety of the name of Maastricht worldwide. It also proved that this city is capable of facilitating global events and is happy to do so. The actual celebrations will focus on the future of Europe and the challenges we are facing today. Young people who grew up in an united Europe will play an important role in this. It has built an international reputation by the congresses and fairs held over here, like TEFAF, the biggest and most influential art and antiques fair in the world, that actually could only originate over here where the art market was not focusing on a purely national level, as was usual in the past, but where from the start the international gathering of impor-

Maastricht School of Management, the United Nations University, the European Institute of Public Administration, and Zuyd University for Applied Sciences with its famous art schools. Maastricht may be small in scale, but it has the facilities and possibilities to focus on linking people, companies and organisations. This is a city where you can easily meet each other also outside the fair in one of the many excellent restaurants or pubs, in one of the shops in the enchanting city centre or during one of the cultural side events.

Maastricht hopes that you want to carry out the message to your friends and acquaintances all over the world that Maastricht is a wonderful place to be, visit and live in, an old town with a very young heart, where you are more than welcome to come back someday and enjoy Maastricht in all its aspects.

Maastricht The capital of Limburg province, with its beautiful historic city centre, offers top quality gastronomy, an exclusive shopping experience, international allure, and a lively student culture. The city of TEFAF is also the home of the Netherlands’ most international university. 50% of the students come from abroad. It is here in André Rieu’s hometown that the European Union was created and the euro was born. Maastricht is the second monument city of the Netherlands, has the world’s most beautiful bookshop, houses a branch of the United Nations University, as well as the European Institute of Public Administration. However, the best thing about I N M A A S T RI C H T A N D S U R RO U N D I N G A R E A S . Maastricht is its international environment. Maastricht lies at the heart of Europe. French is spoken a mere 5 kilometres from the city and 25 kilometres away in Aachen, you’ll find Germany’s largest university of technology. World knowledge just a bike ride away. This is typical of Maastricht: every inch is international.

ONWARDS TO THE FINALE 2016 is set to be an important and exciting year for A2 Maastricht. The aim is to bring the tunnel - with its two layers of two tunnel tubes - into use at the end of this year. That isn’t simply a matter of raising four road barriers and letting the cars drive through. The tunnel is part of a large-scale traffic system for which new road connections have been built over the past two years. In order to ensure that Maastricht remains accessible during the far-reaching completion work, we will bring the tunnel into use in two stages. We will first open up three of the tunnel tubes for traffic; the fourth will open later. For the latest news: www.a2maastricht.nl

A2 MAASTRICHT A SINGLE PLAN FOR THE CITY AND MOTORWAY

At the same time, it will present new opportunities for upgrading the adjacent neighbourhoods by, among other things, improving traffic safety and the quality of life. www.a2maastricht.nl
