He allows the name of this beautiful spot and that of the capital Maastricht – André Rieu’s city of the birth – to resound in all corners of the globe, in the same beautiful way as his enchanting music. From New York to Tokyo and from Melbourne to Buenos Aires, the name André Rieu is known to all. Millions of fans are captivated by his music and his show.

Concerts at Vrijthof Square A dream come true

T

he history of the concerts by André Rieu at Vrijthof square in Maastricht goes back to over 30 years. This was when the idea originated. ‘Everything started with the “Hiering Biete Concerts”. This was in the 1980s. I started dreaming of playing in the middle of Vrijthof square as far back as then. My wife and I used to say: “wouldn’t that

6

be wonderful?”. Of course, we could never have imagined then that it would be possible – or become so big. We were, however, certain that it would be unique.’ So, the present Vrijthof Concerts are based on the Hiering Biete Concerts that André Rieu gave immediately after Carnival, together with his former Salon Orchestra, more than 30 years ago. ‘At that time, I knew that this would be our life. I just had no idea how big it would become. And, of course, the success is overwhelming. Fans from more than 80 countries flock to Maastricht. We have also taken many

risks – during all those years, in fact. It goes without saying that with 120 people in permanent employment and just as many whom we call on from outside, it is still a risky venture. These are huge investments. Fortunately, our business is doing very well.’ Despite the huge number of concerts, André Rieu never allows himself to go on automatic pilot. ‘I want to give my very best every time. It’s not as if I were playing a part. I could not do it any differently. People sense this, if it is genuine or not. This is why my audience is always so emotional – because I am, too.’

André Rieu’s does not prepare for the Vrijthof Concerts any differently than on a concert tour of Brazil or Australia. ‘I concentrate on the concert before me. On those days, my home is my hotel, so to speak. I don’t do any household tasks, for example. I exercise and rest. I make sure that I am at Vrijthof square at around 5 PM to see if everything is in order. We have a bite to eat there, and then I take a little rest, just like when I am on tour. I never do anything on automatic pilot. I have to recharge my batteries again every time. And afterwards, there is the release. It’s still a wonderful feeling.’ 7

Unique art in the Basilica of Our Lady

T

he Basilica of Our Lady, located on the square bearing the same name in the centre of Maastricht, enjoys tremendous fame due to the impressive architecture of this Romanesque church and because of the special appeal exuded by Our Lady ‘Star of the Sea’, in whose chapel hundreds of candles burn brightly each day. Apart from its unique atmosphere, the Basilica features a separate treasury that contains many unique works of art. One of these is the ‘Girdle of Mary’, a rectangular piece of cloth that the Virgin Mary is reputed to have worn during her life. Another highlight of the treasury is the beautiful painting The Dream of Jacob from the first half of the Sixteenth Century. The painting recounts an event during the life of the patriarch Jacob. Sleeping outside, he dreamt he

saw a ladder reaching all the way up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. It has hardly undergone any changes since then. Audio tours are available. The treasury is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM, on Fridays from 11 AM to 4 PM, and on Sundays from 12:30 PM to 4 PM. www.sterre-der-zee.nl

Dan Walsh Pressing Matter

Marwan Rechmaoui Slanted Squares

Andy Summers A Certain Strangeness

On view until 05.01.2020 Clearly rooted in the economic visual idiom of minimal painting, the ornamental painting of Dan Walsh (1960, Philadelphia, USA) offers a new horizon for abstraction. Walsh’s first European museum solo exhibition since 2002 shows twelve recent paintings, a wide selection of hand-made books and a series of works on paper.

Laureate Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art (BACA) 2019 On view until 08.09.2019 The exhibition Slanted Squares gives a glimpse of the wide range of Marwan Rechmaoui’s (1964, Beirut, Lebanon) practice. Deriving inspiration from the geography and rich cultural history of Beirut, Rechmaoui’s work often reflects themes of urbanization and contemporary social and behavioral demographics. He uses industrial materials such as concrete, rubber, tar and glass to create tactile works on a large scale.

On view until 27.10.2019 The Bonnefantenmuseum is presenting an extensive selection of the photographic work of Andy Summers (1942, Poulton-le Fylde, UK), also known as the guitarist of The Police. With over 400 pictures from the period 1979-2018, the exhibition A Certain Strangeness is the first retrospective of British photographer and guitarlegend Andy Summers. Besides showing a preference for nighttime photos, his work is characterised by a sense of intimacy and surrealism, and dynamics that can best be described as ‘in the middle of the moment’.

Maastricht working on Europe

M

aastricht is the most European city of the Netherlands, at the heart of an area where the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium meet. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and has a unique energy and dynamism that is particular to the city. Once it was the place where Germanic and Roman cultures collided; today it is a melting pot of cultures, languages, and flavours that make the city burst with creativity. Today’s Maastricht is a city that has the best of the past and present. There are historic

buildings and trendy designer boutiques; majestic churches and thrilling cave adventures; inspired menus and inviting cafĂŠ terraces; lively festivals and sensational exhibitions; stately squares and vast vineyards. All this and more makes Maastricht a favourite destination for cultural travellers. Welcome in the good life capital of Europe! 24

U Did you know? U Maastricht has always been a city defined by (crossing) borders. For centuries it’s been a melting pot of cultures where different people meet, trade, cooperate and, from time to time, wholeheartedly disagree. This is where Europeans U come together to work, think, debate, discuss and dream. U Birth of the Eurozone-Representatives of twelve European countries signed the Treaty of Maastricht U (1992) paving the way for the introduction of the Euro. U Maastricht University is the most international university in the country with 53% foreign students. U Maastricht and region are home to the four campuses of Brightlands; a community of 21,000 ambitious entrepreneurs, researchers

and students. They are affiliated with start-ups, multinationals and knowledge institutes. They team up to take on global challenges in health, sustainability, digitization and nutrition. Maastricht has the second highest number of historic buildings in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and the whole city centre has been declared a protected national monument. The name Maastricht comes from the Latin Mosae Trajectum, ‘crossing over the Meuse,’ which refers to the bridge over the river that the Romans built here around the first century AD. F

or the tenth time, an exhibition of Marc Rieu's paintings will take place in the month of July;Â traditionwise, you'll be able to admire his most recent works in the Vrijthof Theatre. Admission is free on the following days: 4-7 July, 11-14 July and 18-21 July, all from 12.00h until 17.00h.

During his studies of History of Art, Marc discovered his passion; he took masterclasses with famous artists like Gerard Huysman, John Wassenaar and Simon Balyon in order to get more qualified in this metier. At the university, he got his degree under supervision of prof. dr. Volker Manuth. Suggestions of the reality can be seen on Marc's canvases; he enchants this reality with his painting brush, turned into a magic wand. Hence the new movement of suggestive illusionism, made up by Marc himself. Often, the inspiration for his landscapes comes from personal memories. Rieu’s music unites Europe ‘

T

he music of André Rieu brings together the diversity of European cultures. If there is anything that the audience on Maastricht's Vrijthof square will be certain to experience, it is that the music of Rieu has the power to unite,’ says Theo Bovens, the Governor of Limburg, who lauds fellow resident of Maastricht André Rieu as a true representative of Europe. ‘Rieu’s concerts always include traditional music from other countries. Europe is, of course, a highly diverse region, with its numerous different cultures and musical styles, ranging from the Viennese waltz to Hungarian folk music, Greek melodies, Scottish bagpipes, French chansons, Spanish sounds, and Dutch sing-alongs or the Anthem of Maastricht. All of this is Europe. The audience is introduced to this, to the diversity of European cultures, right here on Vrijthof square. Rieu even transcends Europe,’ explains Governor Bovens. 30

Maastricht: the birthplace of the European Union Maastricht is the birthplace of the European Union. Not only that, but the euro – the currency that has simplified monetary transactions throughout Europe – was born here as well. It was for this purpose that the Treaty of Maastricht was signed by the then European heads of state, at the Gouvernement aan de Maas (the Limburg Provincial Government Building) in 1992. These included François Mitterand, Helmut Kohl, and our own former prime minister Ruud Lubbers. Limburg and Maastricht

still openly take pride in this and in the role they played in hosting this historic event. The debate concerning and development of Europe is something that should remain a key agenda point for every European institution. Currently, Maastricht is promoting itself as the 'workshop' of Europe with the slogan: ‘Maastricht, working on Europe’. A place where work is continuously being carried out and perfected on the development of present-day Europe. A place that breathes Europe. A city that attracts students from all over the European continent. A city with an English-language university that offers such study programmes as European Studies. Maastricht is also positioning itself more and more as a real European city for people of all ages. In this city, the leading candidates’ debate took place in May, just before the European elections. And this is where Minister-President

of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet spoke about the future of Europe. ‘A better Europe starts here’ The Province of Limburg received the European Heritage label in 2018 for the historic events of 1992 and its active role in the debate about Europe. There has been a plaque next to the gates of the Gouvernement ever since, bearing the words: 'Europe starts here . ‘But, as far as we are concerned, it says: “A better Europe starts here”. I wish all concert-goers a fantastic musical stay in Maastricht!’, says Governor Theo Bovens.

Andreas and Diana from Munich ‘We look forward to André Rieu’s concerts on Vrijthof square every year. In our eyes, he is a person who knows like no other how to select music that moves his audience. In addition to the lovely dresses, the backdrop is so unique – surrounded by all those outdoor cafés and churches. It is a bit of heaven on earth.’ Andreas and Diana von Dall’ Armi have been coming to Vrijthof square all the way from Munich specially to attend Rieu’s concerts for many years now. Maastricht has become a place where this family can enjoy both of their greatest passions: André Rieu and horse riding. The CHIO, a renowned equestrian event, takes place in Aachen at the same time. The German couple always enjoy themselves immensely by spending a relaxing night in Maastricht after Rieu’s awe-inspiring concerts. ‘What we like best is to enjoy a drink on Onze Lieve Vrouwenplein square after the concert. This is the most romantic place to enjoy life.’ 32

Gillian from Kent She may have been born 80 springs ago, but this does not deter Gillian Bisseru from travelling to Vrijthof square all the way from the UK each and every year. She never misses a day of Rieu’s concerts during this period. ‘It is simply amazing how Rieu, together with his orchestra, knows how to reach his audience and unlock their emotions.’ To be able to enjoy these days to the full, Gillian always treats herself to the Kruisheren Hotel’s VIP package. ‘The location of the hotel is

Fans for life

ideal, and the architecture makes it truly special.’ The Kruisheren Hotel’s VIP package includes a lunch followed by a visit to Rieu’s castle or his studio, or a backstage tour, depending on which day it is. ‘This affords everyone a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of Rieu’s everyday life. Particularly when the tour is given by his son Pierre!’

Ruud and Ineke Ruud and Ineke Elshout-Cornelissen from The Hague have been true Rieu fans from the very beginning. In the 1990s, they attended the concerts Rieu gave together with his Johann Strauss Orchestra in small theatres. ‘Nowadays, we travel to Maastricht every year – and every year we stay a little longer! We want to be there during the entire concert period. Last year, this meant attending all of 13 concerts.’ They stay at hotel Du Casque, where they unwind after not only Rieu’s concerts, but also the fan dinners and picnics they organize. ‘Organizing all of this has become almost a full-time job. Where Rieu goes, we follow. It has actually become our ideal holiday formula.’
