MEET THE TRAINERS
The Sparsholt Business welding team consists of Davina Urquhart and Antonio Andrade.
Davina’s love of joining metal started at the age of 10, welding in the family business. By the time she left school, she already knew that welding/ fabrication was her calling and completed an apprenticeship with John Brown Shipyard in Glasgow. Thirty-five years later she is every bit as passionate about welding as she ever was, has a Master’s degree in Welding Science, and is also a licenced welding inspector in four different jurisdictions.
Davina’s day job is working for the Ministry of Defence supporting the nation’s nuclear security technologies and she teaches on the C & G level 2 and 3 programmes at Sparsholt in the evening. She specialises in a variety of welding processesMIG, TIG, MMA, Flux-core, Sub-arc, Plasma Arc and Oxy Fuel cutting and welding. What Davina doesn’t know about welding, isn’t worth knowing!
Antonio Andrad e
DavinaUrquhart
Antonio started his career as an automobile and marine electrician in Spain and moved to the UK more than 40 years ago. In 2020 during Covid, he took the decision to take welding classes at Sparsholt College and it was there that Davina recognised a welding talent. This chance encounter has ultimately led to Antonio working as a lecturer at Sparsholt delivering the Introduction to Welding course at both our Sparsholt and Andover sites.
Both Davina and Antonio are passionate about passing on their knowledge and love for welding to the next generation. In their time at the college, they have helped numerous people start a welding career and even more of those who want to develop welding skills for a hobby.

SAFEGUARDING SUPPORT OFFICER APPRENTICESHIP – LEVEL 3
This apprenticeship is an exciting new programme designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in safeguarding. It provides a pathway for those looking to support statutory safeguarding duties across a variety of public, private, and voluntary sector organisations.
Safeguarding Support Officers play a crucial role in assisting these organisations to uphold their responsibilities in protecting individuals’ health, wellbeing, and human rights. A Safeguarding Support Officer is the first point of contact for safeguarding concerns, providing initial risk assessments, guiding individuals to the right support, and directing them to the right person within the organisation or an external agency when needed.
To become a Safeguarding Support Officer, you should be passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals, including children and adults. If you’re ready to make a real difference and grow in a fulfilling career, this apprenticeship is the perfect step for you.
This apprenticeship is delivered on a day release basis for one academic year, with written assignments and in person observations in year two.
As part of the apprenticeship programme, you will be required to undertake both on and off-the-job training. While your employer will be responsible for your training on-the-job (workplace), the College and your employer will be jointly responsible for your off-the-job training enabling you to help develop the right knowledge, skills and behaviours to become competent in your job role.
