The New Year finds many of us optimistic with thoughts of how we’d like to shape our future with new habits, new hobbies, and new aspirations. However, those struggling with a cancer diagnosis-- either for themselves or a loved one-- may be focused on tackling the challenges each day brings.

“A cancer diagnosis is such a life-changing diagnosis,” says Mercy UC Davis oncologist Parminder Sidhu, M.D. “Our collective goal is to provide services that will help any cancer patient in the community feel better, get the best quality of life, and get the best possible result from\their treatment.”

At the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center, professionals from many different disciplines come together to discover solutions that heal the body, educate their patients, and soothe the spirits of those affected.

Healing the Body with Comprehensive and CuttingEdge Cancer Care The Merced community is fortunate to have the combined expertise of two cutting-edge institutions at one facility-- a facility that is close to home and that advocates for “whole patient care”. The Mercy-UC Davis Cancer Center provides state-of-the-art cancer therapies that are delivered by compassionate and committed cancer care experts. In fact, the UC Davis Cancer Care Network is a national model for optimizing integrated, collaborative cancer care.

The partnership between Mercy Medical Center

Merced and the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center brings expert training, virtual tumor boards using video conferencing (telemedicine), and access to more than 150 different clinical trials of the next generation of cancer treatments to Merced.

The Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center is staffed with three premier physicians from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center who specialize in Hematology and General Oncology; Eric Ko, M.D., Prasad Pillai, M.D., and Parminder Sidhu, M.D. Dignity Health is the managing partner for the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center and dedicates a staff of sixteen equally committed nurses, therapists, and cancer program professionals to the combined care mission. There is a phlebotomy lab on site, and staff to include both medical and radiation therapists, an oncology certified nurse, and a medical physicist.

A recent expansion in Radiation Oncology involved the installation of leading-edge technology to provide local access to Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery Therapy (SBRT).

These combined resources are available in the community and allow our resident cancer experts the ability to choose a range of treatment options; from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. By keeping pace with the (continued on page 2)

latest advancements in these fields, there is hope that cancer patients can be cured effectively and with less discomfort and fewer side effects.

Healing Minds and Soothing Spirits From its inception, the warm and welcoming Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center has had a mission to treat the whole patient, not just the cancer. In addition to high quality care, patients receive comfort from access to pastoral care, nutrition counseling, and the peaceful Healing Garden.

Within the past year, progressive new support services dedicated to total patient care have been introduced to a grateful community of cancer patients and their families.

“Studies have shown that supportive care activities increase patient recovery opportunities tremendously,” according to Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center Director Charnese Felix. “We are working hard and we are working creatively to maximize the whole patient benefit.”

The Mercy UC Davis Cancer Support Group is a working example of how the Mercy Medical Center community has come together to create a healing community.

Facilitated by volunteers and funded initially by the Mercy Foundation, the cancer support group meets monthly and has been well attended. The group has no official agenda for their meetings, is free of charge, and is open to survivors, families, and anyone that would like to attend.

Linda Walker is an RN, a Case Manager at Mercy, and cancer survivor. She has volunteered to facilitate the group since July. When a guest speaker cancelled at the last minute before Thanksgiving, the group spent the hour and a half talking about what they were grateful for. “I have really gained more than I’ve given to this group.”

Pastor George Bennett of the United Methodist Church of Merced will soon be adding his expertise in pastoral care and small group dynamics as a facilitator for the monthly cancer support groups. “It’s all about creating space for people to go through the struggles they face.”

Other complementary programs to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients will include massage therapy, Ananada Yoga, which engages the mind and

incorporates gentle movements, Look Good Feel Better classes to cope with cancerrelated side effects in appearance, and Pathways to Recovery, which is a meditation and movement class taught by a cancer exercise specialist.

All classes at the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center are currently offered free of charge.

Creating a Healing Community As the new support group builds a network connected by cancer, the greater community has rallied behind it. “The community has been really generous,” says Felix. “Our startup funds came from the Mercy Foundation, and then Dignity Health System Office Employees decided to raise money so that we could expand our support group.” During that campaign, an anonymous donor launched a matching challenge, which resulted in a total gift of $15,000. Additional community support includes Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraising efforts by the Merced Fire Department and free local radio promotion.

Individuals can make a difference by making financial contributions and by donating their time and talents at the Cancer Center. Volunteers are needed to participate in the support groups, especially people who are survivors themselves. Guest speakers are also valued contributors to this community.

The American Cancer Society designed two programs that are volunteer-driven as well; Road to Recovery provides transportation to and from treatment for cancer patients, and Reach to Recovery is a volunteer visitation program where breast cancer survivors are trained to share their experiences with newly diagnosed patients.

“We really want to continue offering these free classes and services. The classes have been successful and well-attended and we’d like to bring more dynamic offerings to those affected by cancer in our community,” says Lillian Sanchez, Mercy Merced Community Educator.

Cancer survivors in the Mercy medical community have indicated other support groups that would make a difference, including a Spanish-language support group, an extra support group designed for young breast cancer patients, and a separate support group just for caregivers. (continued on page 11)

Our Giving Community Charitable Remainder Trusts Are a Wonderful Way to Give

By Mercy Foundation Planned Giving Specialist Bill Altavilla In 1969, the U.S. Congress created a type of trust that helps charities and not-for-profit organizations generate more revenue for their causes. This vehicle allows taxpayers to reduce estate taxes, eliminate capital gains, claim an income tax deduction, and benefit charities instead of the IRS. This type of trust is commonly known as a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT).

What are the benefits of CRTs? CRT’s are irrevocable trusts that actually provide for and maintain two beneficiaries. The first of which is the income beneficiaries (an individual and, if married, a spouse). Income beneficiaries receive a set percentage of income for their lifetime from the trust. The second beneficiary is the chosen charity. The charity receives the principal of the trust after the income beneficiaries pass away.

Capital Gains Because the assets are destined for a charity, CRTs do not pay any capital gains taxes. For this reason, they are ideal for assets like stocks or property with a low cost basis but high appreciated value Since CRTs have a charitable intent and do not have to pay capital gains, the full value of any assets transferred to the trust and thus, to you and your favorite charity.

Income The amount of income to come out of the CRT depends upon the payout percentage, as well as the amount of growth and income your assets generate while inside the CRT. The CRT must distribute at least 5% of the net fair market value of its assets. When setting the payout percentage, the higher it is, the lower your charitable income tax deduction. Considering market conditions and the possibility that taking out too much may reduce the principal inside the trust, payouts are not normally greater than 5-6% each year.

Taxes A CRT is exempt from estate taxes. You may end up saving as much as 45 cents of every dollar you move to the CRT. CRTs, because they benefit a charity, also qualify you for an income tax deduction. The amount of your deduction is the present value of the remainder interest to the charity. Average deductions normally fall in the range of 20-50% against your adjusted gross income.

Any deductions not used in the year of contribution may be carried forward for the next five years.

Heritage Club

Connecting Committed Citizens to the Services and Caregivers at Mercy Medical Center A new year is a great time to make a new commitment not only to improving your own healthcare, but also to improving the healthcare of your larger medical center community.

Joining the Heritage Club is an easy and interactive way to get educated about healthcare in your community and to be part of something bigger than yourself!

The Heritage Club was formed in 1992 to bring together a group of like-minded community members to discuss ways to evolve healthcare in the Merced community. Each member generally commits to an annual donation between $100 to $1,000 which provides a permanent source of funding to affect change and enhance existing programs, equipment and services.

Through various annual socials and events, Heritage Club members have the opportunity to get the first glimpses of new technology coming to the medical center, and to meet and greet medical professionals from Mercy. Heritage Club members make connections with each other as well, based on their mutual desire to make a difference.

“Relatively modest investments from individuals in the Heritage Club combine to make a big difference,” says Board Champion Cyril Lawrence. “Your support gives you access to the people on the front lines who deliver care and who make decisions about the future of healthcare available in Merced.”

With about 150 active members, the Heritage Club is able to donate $15-$20,000 each year to a program they choose to support. Last year, the Heritage Club helped to fund the C.A.R.E. Channel, a 24-hour television channel, that combines peaceful scenes of nature with soothing music which promotes relaxation improves restfulness, reduces anxiety, and enhances pain management protocols.

This year, the Director of Rural Clinics, April Brewer, is excited for the benefits to the Rural Clinics the Heritage Club funds will provide. The Family Care Clinic has been utilizing hand-me-down, stained, and mismatched furniture for years, as well as aging exam beds and equipment.

environment. The effect is amplified with the smiles and improved staff morale that such a thoughtful donation brings,” says Brewer. “The Rural Clinics have been truly blessed by the Heritage Club membership this year.”

“There is often the biggest concentration of specialists and facilities in city centers,” adds Lawrence. “Supporting the Rural Clinics this year may provide the greatest opportunity to see change in local healthcare.”

The 7th annual Celebrate a Life event in December provided a very special opportunity for people to honor their loved ones as a community.

“It looked to me like the people who gathered that evening had become a family,” remembers Chaplain Rico Monton of Spiritual Services. “There was a real connection, like a homecoming.”

Chaplain Monton led the Reflection Ceremony at the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center for the first time. He spoke about the inevitability of challenges that each of us will experience in this life, as well as the overarching importance of supporting one another through life’s challenges.

“It was a beautiful experience,” remembers Chaplain Rico Monton of the Spiritual Services Department. “I saw a lot of tears.”

The Celebrate a Life campaign has received heartfelt support both spiritually and financially. This year, the Rural Clinics will benefit from the $19,400 raised to purchase equipment for Merced’s most remote and underserved population.

“It’s great to be part of these funds,” says Rural Clinics Director April Brewer. “The circle of care continues with donations that are made in memory of loved ones.”

The Mercy Foundation is grateful to all of the donors who chose to adorn the Christmas trees at Mercy Medical Center with the names of loved ones they wanted to honor and celebrate; new births, those in recovery, and those who have gone before us.

‘Cathie’s Bears’ Bring Comfort to Sick Girls and Boys

Cathie Hostetler had a lifelong love of teddy bears and a passion for helping others. “She and my dad bought a bunch of bears before Christmas one year and handed them out to kids from a street corner in San Francisco,” recalls her daughter Andrea Brandt. “That’s just the way she was.”

When Cathie succumbed to ALS in 2010, her family created a memorial foundation named ‘Cathie’s Bears’ to honor her spirit.

A donation of 250 “soft and huggable” bears was made by Cathie’s Bears through the Mercy Foundation to comfort pediatric patients in the Emergency Department.

“It was so incredible to receive this giant trunk full of teddy bears from Andrea’s car!” exclaimed Alex Ortega, Clinical Manager of Emergency Services at Mercy. “Being able to give one of these big, fluffy brown bears to a really sick kid absolutely complements our

Each year, Cathie’s Bears donates between 600-700 teddy bears to organizations that work with children throughout Merced.
