“The adventure of travel is an experience that transforms the mind and the heart,” . Paulo Coelho once said, capturing the transformative essence of travel. At Fly Away, World2Fly’s travel magazine, we rejoice in this vision, in the promise of adventure and discovery that every flight offers.

Last year marked significant milestones for World2Fly, with the addition of a new A350 to our fleet. These advances not only allow us to continuously improve our services and quality for our travellers, they also reinforce our commitment to sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.

In 2024, we remain on the path to excellence. We extended our weekly frequencies to all destinations, facilitating smooth connections by moving our operations centre in Madrid to Terminal 4 of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. In addition, we inaugurated the exciting route from Madrid to Zanzibar (Tanzania), opening new doors to exploration. Our past achievements are only the prelude to what is still to come. With 3,633 flights in 2023 and 91% occupancy, we have demonstrated our ability to meet the needs of more than 1,364,000 passengers. In addition, we remain committed to the agreement we inaugurated in November 2023 with Corendon to fly from Amsterdam to Curaçao.

In this fourth edition of our flight magazine, we invite you to embark on a journey of discovery and transformation. From the vibrant streets of Santo Domingo to the exotic beaches of Bali, from whale watching in crystal clear waters to immersing yourself in Tanzanian culture, each page immerses you in a unique experience.

In addition, we explore the stories of inspiring people, such as surfer Andrea Torres, our sports ambassador, and highlight the dedication of our professionals who work tirelessly to make your travel dreams come true. So while you enjoy your flight, we invite you to get lost in Fly Away magazine and let yourself be carried away by the magic of travel. SANTO DOMINGO, SUSTAINABLE PARADISE

The capital of the Dominican Republic is more than just the bridge you jump onto the Caribbean beaches from. Cosy and beautiful, it's the urban (and sustainable) jewel of the tropics.

8 DESTINATION SANTO DOMINGO CHECK-IN

All paths in the colonial centre lead to Plaza de España, which is always bustling.

9

TRADITION AND MODERNITY LIVE TOGETHER IN THIS TROPICAL URBAN GEM

It's the oldest city in the New World and this gives it a magical atmosphere. But despite its endless pages of history, modernity runs through its veins and life, full of rhythm, colour and flavour, is developing in a sustainable way. The capital of the Dominican Republic is serious about being green, something that's clear from its commitment to a road infrastructure that promotes the use of bicycles and the design of sustainable spaces that avoid environmental impact. One example is the Orange Dominicana company building, a pioneer in self-sufficiency with solar energy, or the Ágora Mall, the first shopping

centre in the Caribbean to be granted the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) certification as a sustainable building.

Santo Domingo is the urban jewel of the tropics. Strolling through its historic centre, a World Heritage Site, is a real delight. This is where you can follow the trail of the colonial façades, the palaces, the churches and the squares sheltered in the shade of the palm trees. The Cathedral is a real must, the first to be built on the American continent; the Columbus Alcazar, which belonged to the discoverer's son; and the Convent of los Dominicos, where the first plea in defence of the Indians was made. There are other charming places you can't miss, such as Calle de las Damas, the oldest in the city, or Cuesta de la Hostos, the chromatic façades of which appear in The Godfather II Santo Domingo also has numerous green areas to connect with nature, such as the popular Eugenio María de Hostos, which was catalogued in its time as "the best park in the Antilles". The Mirador Sur, the National Botanical Garden or the Los Tres Ojos Park are other beautiful spaces where you can walk, exercise or relax. And all of them can be reached by bicycle through the National District cycle path.

10 DESTINATION SANTO DOMINGO CHECK-IN

Live with taste

Santo Domingo is a culinary destination, and the fact that it has been named Caribbean Capital of Gastronomic Culture for two consecutive years is proof of just that. Its cuisine is the result of the confluence of three cultures (European, American and African), so its kitchens are a great discovery for the foodies among us.

It's also an ideal place to indulge in shopping. As well as the craft shops in the colonial area, the Piantini neighbourhood, in the modern area, you'll find shopping centres (Ágora Mall, Acropolis and Blue Mall) where you can find all the usual names.

The nightlife in Santo Domingo is one of the most vibrant in the Caribbean. You simply can't miss the Noches de Bonyé, every Sunday afternoon, when people gather in the centre to dance son and merengue in the open air. Pure tasty rhythms that the locals generously share with visitors.

FLAVOURS OF THE CARIBBEAN

Colourful, tasty and aromatic, exotic Caribbean cuisine emerges from the miscegenation of diverse cultures. Its dishes masterfully combine pre-Columbian culinary traditions with European, African and Asian ones. An explosion of flavour on your palate.

Cuban sauce

Typical Cuban cuisine is like its music: evocative and expressive. Most of its hardhitting recipes revolve around rice, the star ingredient, corn, beans, yucca, and bananas. Made without haste, with rich sauces and a wise dose of spices, they stand out for their juiciness. The Cuban national dish, ajiaco criollo, is a musthave in Cuba. It is a thick broth with vegetables, meat and corn. Congrí ricealso stands out, mixing rice with red beans and crunchy bacon, and the soul of every party: roast pork, prepared on a spit over an open fire.

DARE TO WASH IT DOWN WITH A DAIQUIRI FRAPPÉ?

12 CHECK-IN STRAIGHT TO THE TASTE BUDS

Unmistakable Mexico

Mexican cuisine is more than its famous tacos and enchiladas. Its richness and variety is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage. It is, in fact, the pride and the flag of the culture of Mexico. Its succulent, unmistakable and spicy cuisine orbits around the trinity of corn, beans and chilli, although avocado, chocolate, zapotes or tomato are also very present. Be sure to try cochinita pibil, pressure-cooked pork marinated with annatto and chilli peppers; pozole, a broth made with corn kernels, meat, vegetables and spices; and, of course, chilli en nogada, chilli filled with meat and fruit with an exquisite walnut sauce.

Dominican character

With a long maritime tradition, the fruits of the Caribbean Sea are a benchmark of Dominican cuisine. The snapper, grouper or lobster star in several of its tasty, intense and spicy dishes, closely followed by rice, beans, coconut, chilli and sweet potato. In the Dominican Republic you should taste the snapper in coconut sauce, but without forgetting a recipe for rice, stewed beans and meat called the flag which, of course, is the true emblem of the country. Do not miss the sancocho, a thick soup of meat, tubers and vegetables, or mofongo, made with green bananas and greaves.

CUBA: BEACHES YOU CAN'T MISS

They say that Cuba is much more than just its beaches, but when you see those turquoise waters cut by the blue of the sky, it's easy to forget. Come and take a dip at its best beaches.

Many fall madly in love with the Caribbean when they walk along beaches like Varadero. Others are moved by unspoilt landscapes, such as those found at Playa Paraíso, or surfing in the choppy waters of the Atlantic. It's curious to think that this fusion that makes Cuba a unique world destination shows its most relaxed side in the variety of its beaches.

The Cuban beach is another level of beauty, and just gazing out at its infinite horizon you can't help but relax! An invitation to discover unspoilt nature that stretches across its 5,700 kilometres of coastline and over 4,000 keys, islets and islands, which would take years to explore.

But the traveller can also feed on more worldly pleasures, in which Cubans are masters. The beaches are also a social centre here, where you can enjoy their juices, rums and refreshing cocktails, and always to that soundtrack of lysergic beats that accompany the globetrotter throughout their stay.

And there are few pleasures quite like diving into its turquoise and always transparent waters. Waters that invite you to experiment on a board or dive deep to discover seabeds such as Jardines de la Reina, in the south of the island, an exceptional diving park made up of 250 islands named after Columbus.

Cuba's beaches are also eroded by history, enriching sunsets that make life worth living.

"The luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time"

18 VALUES HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY
TRAVELLING IS HEALING
When we travel, we don't just 'see the world'. Psychologists agree that we also get to know ourselves better and resolve personal conflicts thanks to the experience of travel.
TEXT Juan Carlos de Laiglesia

In his album Lodger, David Bowie sang: "Sometimes I feel the need to move on, so I pack a bag and move on... Somewhere there's an ocean, innocent and wild, somewhere there's a morning sky, bluer than her eyes…". We set off on a trip with the intention of refreshing our minds, or sometimes to turn the page after an unpleasant event or simply enjoy getting to know new places and people. We travel for different reasons, but the trip itself is what's important because they all have their own surprises and offer new experiences.

According to the psychiatrist Enrique Rojas, travelling is good for mental health because it acts as an engine of excitement right from when we start planning the trip. And we relive trips three times: when we plan them, when we go on them and when we look back on them. The psychologist Bernabé Tierno based the therapeutic quality of travelling on the scientific fact that positive thoughts stimulate the production of those "feel good substances" that we can generate naturally, such as endorphins, which have analgesic and calming effects, or serotonin, which regulates our mood, sleep and brainpower.

You don't have to go to India for three months or be a millionaire to enjoy the well-being granted by travel: a weekend away with friends in a country house or a domestic trip by car will also do the trick, and even a walk long enough to break free of our usual patterns and reconnect with nearby natural wonders that we hadn't seen before.

Mental health benefits proven

Travel has helped many patients recover from fears, insecurity, anxieties or obstacles in life. Psychologist Jaime Burque has seen the following positive effects in his office.

GAINING PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE

When we travel, we see our life through fresh eyes, we relativize and can break old habits of thought and rigidities thanks to new stimuli.

GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER

New situations activate curiosity and open-mindedness, key psychological strengths in order to change, be happy and feel fulfilled in life. By spending some time with ourselves we can rediscover ourselves.

MINDFULNESS AGAINST STRESS

Travelling seizes the present day and we stop agonising about the past or worrying about the future. It's a powerful break that helps us to recharge our batteries by deactivating daily stress.

THE POWER OF POSITIVITY

The excitement of preparing for a trip already stimulates us positively, and is also an antidote for worry and fear. By facing unforeseen events, we strengthen our selfesteem and love ourselves more.

INCREASED SOCIABILITY AND UNDERSTANDING

If we're travelling with someone, we'll share many intense experiences and that can strengthen the relationship. If we go it alone, we'll become more tolerant and flexible.

The power of the different

It's incredible that its length of 145 km, 80 km at its maximum width, can offer so many wonders and all so surprising to the eyes of the traveller. This Indonesian province with a strong Hindu belief also worships Buddhist saints and animism, creating a unique, tolerant and hospitable cultural melting pot.

Thousands of ancient temples

There are up to 10,000 temples. All of them are at the centre of Balinese life and are visited with curiosity and respect, in equal parts. Next to Lake Bratan, Ulun Danu is a must. Beaches for all tastes

Tell me about the beach of your dreams, and I'll tell you which one to visit. A young surfer, Kuta; family-friendly, Sanur; exclusive, Nusa Dua. Tulamben for snorkelling, Jimbaran to be seen... and from all of them you can admire a priceless sunrise or sunset. The choice is yours.

But don't wear yourself out, the night is calling to you. It's not hard to choose the right restaurant, warung or beach club. Later, scan the promenade for the best place to round off the party.

Dishes to see and enjoy

The presentations are captivating to the eye, but the first bite will win over your palate. The result of a mix of Malaysian, Chinese, Indian and European cuisine, Balinese cuisine is also unique. Always accompanied by its ubiquitous rice, enjoy a nasi campur (vegetables and meat), or a charcoal saté. Dabu-dabu sauce for fish and the seafood, which is a must.

22 SMALL WORLD THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS TO GO

Gili, a romantic paradise

After a two-hour boat ride, you will spot the three small islands and your heart will begin to race. An idyllic place to disconnect, walk hand in hand along golden beaches and immerse yourself in its mythical seabed. But make no mistake, at nightfall, it's time to get dressed up! Enjoy its fish, seafood and lively nightlife.

Don't tell anyone, but this is the most authentic place. Jungle and volcanoes, rice paddies and beaches, mosques and hotels, waterfalls and Malay Sasak villages... The island of Lombok closely guards its secrets away from mass tourism, just as its shellfish do with their prized pearls.

26 SMALL WORLD TELL ME WHO YOU'RE TRAVELLING WITH

ometimes you must feel like you spend half of your life on a plane, do you have any anecdotes?

_I remember my first transatlantic trip to Paraná, where I met a friend who was going to take me to the Amazon. I was 24 years old, working as a journalist and it was time to get on with my life. I remember that feeling of adventure, of having so much time, so much that I sort of fell in love and made friends that I've never seen again. I feel like so many things happened to me. From Buenos Aires to Paraná, everyone was doing their own thing, but I was fascinated looking down at the lush landscape that must have been the Río de la Plata delta. For me, the essence of life is to never lose the ability to be surprised.

What are the strangest circumstances in which you have filmed?

_In The Last Circus (2010), I had to shoot a scene on top of an elephant in a kind of wasteland in Méndez Álvaro [Madrid]. It was February and the temperature was -6º. A certain type of rain had to fall on me, the production director said that the water was hot, but the drops felt like nails as they hit me. I've only had those muscle spasms from the cold twice in my life, this time and another time filming in the Valporquero cave [León], where I had to put my head under the water.

Which childhood holidays do you remember the most?

_The ones where I went with my dad and three siblings from Malaga to Cambrils in a Seat 600 with a roof rack to spend a month in the summer with some family friends in their apartment. It took us two days because the car struggled and motorways didn't even exist. That was my first big trip.

How does your training as a journalist influence your profession as an actor?

_I like to do my research, make sure that things are credible, that they are verified. The caption would be: "Reality tops fiction". True stories are the best stories.

You're currently on tour in Spain with the play Un hombre de paso.

_For me there's not much difference between being an actor in theatre, cinema or television. It's about telling a story, getting into character and making people believe it,

28 SMALL WORLD
TELL ME WHO YOU'RE TRAVELLING WITH

whether you're performing live or not. The play is about the holocaust, I would say it's docutheatre . It's about a journalist's fictional meeting in a hotel with Maurice Rossel, my character, and Primo Levi. Rossel is a man who existed, he was a Red Cross delegate during World War II and was in Nazi concentration camps; Levi is the great survivor of the holocaust. The story is something of a journalistic report.

What job satisfied you the most?

The Realm (2018) was really great because it won a lot of awards and recognition always makes you happy; A Twelve-Year Night (2018), as well. Sixteen years ago, when I was already forty, with Dark Blue Almost Black (2006), my professional life took a qualitative leap forward, and I'm still riding that wave.

What's the strangest thing you've brought back from one of your trips?

_I was in Uruguay on the set of A Twelve-Year Night where I was playing the country's future president, José Mújica, who was a farmer. We went to see him so he could tell us stories related to the film and he had a vegetable garden, he gave us some tomatoes. I'd never tasted tomatoes like these in my life and, without thinking twice, I took a few with me. I put them in my suitcase, it went through baggage control and when the tomatoes arrived they were perfect for making gazpacho, but we ate them anyway, they were delicious.

ALBANIA, THE CHARM

OF UNKNOWN BEAUTY

At times, the latest craze is in the most unexpected place: Albania is taking over the world with its millennial history, idyllic beaches and rich heritage.

Albania is asserting itself as the traveller's star destination in Europe, and doing so in a big way. A bridge between East and West, its heritage feeds the traveller's spirit with ancient stories, while its cuisine speaks of the richness of this crossroads. Greeks and Turks, Serbs and Macedonians… they all passed through Albania, making it a unique land.

Your journey here will take you through ancient Ottoman historical centres. Berat captivates with its three neighbourhoods that, like a stone waterfall, flow into the Osum river. Also a World Heritage Site, Gjirokastra offers a secluded 13th-century citadel fringed with tower houses. Durres, the Albanian Rome, offers Roman, Venetian and Byzantine remains right on the coast.

We continue in search of the imprint of history. Apolonia is the largest archaeological park, founded by the Greeks and enlarged by the Romans, it coexists with the medieval monastery of the Virgin Theotokos. Facing the island of Corfu, you'll find

Tirana awaits you discreetly, but what was the most hermetic capital in the world is today reinventing itself. After a short stroll this will become obvious, and yes, you simply must stop off at the Blloku cafes, the neighbourhood where the Albanians show off their passion for coffee.

THE DELICIOUS BYREK

Colourful salads, soups (fërgesë), meatballs (qofte) or tavë kosi, made from lamb, eggs and yogurt, are born from the fusion between Greek and Turkish and local cuisine. Here, you'll find dishes for any occasion, but always accompanied by a byrek, a fine empanada that comes in a thousand varieties.

Albania is also water. Sea and sand that, locked in an embrace with the Ionian that stretches over one hundred kilometres, form the Riviera that has captivated the world in its tourism revival. It's hard to tear yourself away from the winding coastline, but Lake Koman awaits you, where you will take a boat ride to the turquoise beaches of the Shala River.

And this tour of its natural wealth passes through the Albanian Alps, named the "Accursed Mountains" after the war against the Turks. In the north, we find the most hospitable Albania in the villages dotted among the peaks and valleys of almost wild beauty.

SAMANÁ

A trip to the peninsula that will multiply the many charms of your Dominican holidays: the Samaná peninsula is your private Caribbean.

It was a secret that travelled by word of mouth between the most seasoned globetrotters: "If you go to the Dominican Republic, don't miss the Samaná peninsula". Today, the hype is ever growing, but you still have time to discover an unspoilt natural paradise where you can reconcile with life.

Samaná is a peninsula in the north-east of the Dominican Republic. Its inhabitants make a living from fishing, agriculture and tourism, in an environment that has escaped the urban pressure to prove that sustainability and development can be synonymous.

Between December and March, hundreds of humpback whales come to mate on these shores and give birth to their young. Salamá is one of the best places in the world to enjoy the show.

34 INSIDER TRAVEL DIARY
Whale sanctuary

It has become a natural sanctuary. Travellers love its capital, Santa Bárbara, inhabited since it was founded in 1756 by families from the Canary Islands, to prevent the French and English from once again conquering this then almost uninhabited area. Today, you can take in colonial and Afro-American architecture, such as the peculiar church of La Churcha.

But Samaná is above all beaches that reinvent stereotypes such as Madama and Frontón; towns that taste of fish with coconut sauce; mangroves to caress from a boat and waterfalls under which you'll feel like the happiest human being on Earth.

The bridges of Samaná

The most instagrammed sunset stroll. The one with the iconic walking brides that link Cayo Linares (90 metres from the coast) to Cayo Vigía, just over half a kilometre away.

Natural beauties

Commonly ranked among the most beautiful in the world, which is not an easy feat when competing with others like Frontón or Madama.

LOS HAITISES

Over 600 km2 of mangroves, jungle, coves and islets. The national park with the most animal diversity.

Known as Isla Bacardí because it's where the advertisements were shot, you will feel like you are in one of those idyllic commercials.

THE LIMÓN

WATERFALL

After a walk, a welldeserved reward: a swim to remember for a lifetime in this 40-m waterfall.

THE VALLEY

Perfect for surrounding yourself by dense tropical forests. Here, you'll find another waterfall with a provocative name: Lulú.

35
CAYO LEVANTADO RINCÓN BEACH

Samaná asserts its uniqueness by becoming a small peninsula. A green and unspoilt extension where you can discover the Dominican essence on its beautiful beaches, and have fun enjoying its excellent cuisine and lively nightlife.

TOWN OF BAHÍA PRÍNCIPE

Another of the obligatory photos is found in this small town of multicoloured colonial houses. Packed with shops, craft vendors, restaurants and bars, it's definitely a must.

SHIP GRAVEYARD

Pirate ships loaded with gold and jewels like that of Roberto Cofresí and Spanish galleons like Count Tolosa. They say that the riches hidden in the Bay of Samaná are immeasurable, which makes its waters an object of desire for famous treasure hunters.

FACE TO FACE

FRANCISCO VALLÉS

As chief flight supervisor, he makes complex calculations on a daily basis. As a collector of pocket scales, he enjoys the art of precision.
TEXT Raúl Alonso PHOTOS Susana Bravo

How did your hobby begin?

A collector friend of my father gave me some Majorcan pre-metric weights. This is how my interest in weights and measures came about.

And for pocket scales...

Later, I began to collect pocket scales, or moneychangers' boxes to weigh gold and silver minted coins and see if they were acceptable for circulation. And from there, I studied the verification marks on the plates of the scales or on the weights themselves.

How important have they been for trade?

Payment was made with coins, mainly gold ones. The minting of valuable metal was done all over the world, that's why there are so many different moneychangers' boxes that belonged to bankers and merchants. They were minted for the country's currency with a value and weight that they had to meet, and the money-changer's boxes were used to verify this, because the coins were sometimes filed down when they changed hands, therefore losing weight.

What is special about the Catalan and Majorcan system?

Each province had its own measurement system. As far as money changers go, in the reign of Philip V they started using the same ones for gold and silver coins. From then on, we find catchweighers for coins such as escudos, duros, doubloons...

When did they stop being used?

At the end of the 19th century, with the introduction of the peseta after the overthrow of Isabel II.

Do you have a favourite piece?

They all have their own importance and intrigue. Either because of how it was obtained, its past life and, mainly, because of the marks we find on them.

You collaborate with prestigious publications. Is it important to value this legacy?

I am a contributor with the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors. To be honest, there is very little documentation published in Spain on the subject, and after meeting people with the same interest we decided to share our findings and studies. We often make assumptions but are also sometimes able to back them up with scientific data so that those interested can make use of it.

CONTRIBUTING TO MORE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

World2Fly was born to adapt to the new traveller and to a new way of travelling that is more responsible and modern, taking care of our environment at all times. Our commitment to the environment is present throughout our whole flight experience, and in all the components that make up our family, by means of sustainable and responsible management, and helping travellers to be so as well. We are part of IATA’s commitment to reach net CO2 emissions by 2050. We have a long way to go, but from the beginning, we strive to have one of the most efficient fleets on the market. We have the Airbus A350 aircraft model, designed to consume 25% less fuel than previous models, thus reducing CO2 emissions. Additionally, it is one of the quietest aircrafts in the world, and prevents the feeling of jet lag.

HOW WE REDUCE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

We are aware that the greatest impact of our business is the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and therefore, we develop different actions that aim to reduce emissions:

- Weight reduction on airplanes: We optimise the drinking water load based on the routes operated through an engine compressor cleaning program to improve operational efficiency. We use catering trolleys and lighter suitcase containers, and we reduce the paper used thanks to the digitisation of processes.

- We have implemented Skybreathe, a tool for fuel efficiency, which allows us to identify the most efficient piloting techniques in each phase of the flight.

- We use SAF biofuels as they become available for our operations.

- In addition to this, the World2Fly Universe is made up of different collaborators with whom we share values and help us move towards other objectives such as the elimination of plastics or the reduction of food waste.

SUPPORT FOR SPORTS WINDSURFER ANDREA TORRES FLIES WITH US

The Spanish Under-21 Windsurfing champion is part of the World2Fly support programme for Women's Sports. We talk to the windsurfer.

At the age of 8, she attended the sailing school in her native Mallorca, and at 12 she was already competing. That's when she knew she was "hooked for life". Now, she's training to be part of the Spanish Olympic team for Paris 2024, as well as studying Business Administration.

And this young 19-year-old is certainly not lacking in means, currently Spanish Under-21 Windsurfing champion and third in the overall women's category. But she's achieved all of this with a lot of hard work, physical training six days a week, of which she spends no less than two with her board out on the waves.

"I'm happy, because my dream is gradually coming true. I train with the best and I'm learning every day and maybe tomorrow I'll be the best in the world", she explains, without shying away from the fact that an athlete must "aspire to be the best".

Something that World2Fly fully backs her on: "I wouldn't be here without the faith you have in me, because the sailing world is economically demanding. For me, it's so important because it allows me to test out lots of materials and travel to international competitions".

Andrea says that she's been lucky enough to discover wonderful places thanks to a sport that forces her to get on a plane constantly, although she's always grateful to touch down in Lanzarote or Mallorca.

Andrea Torres trains all over the world with the aim of reaching Paris 24.

VIRGINIA GINESTRA

Aviation Legal and Insurance Manager

Although she assures us that the best aviation insurance is the one that doesn't get used, nothing gets past the legal manager of World2Fly.

What is the mission of an airline lawyer? It's really exciting, you arrive in the morning with the aim of finishing one project and then five different ones come at you and they were all due yesterday! I review contracts to make sure that they comply with aeronautical regulations and legislation. Also, so that they are beneficial for the airline and consequently have a positive impact on the passenger.

You are also responsible for insurance. Yes, to make sure the planes and passengers are properly insured. And I prepare part of the documentation required by civil aviation in order to operate throughout the world.

Does a plane contract have a lot of fine print?

At World2Fly, the aircraft are under a lease known as a Dry Lease. Once the chosen aircraft has been selected by the CFO and CEO, that's when, along with the technical director who reviews the engineering, we go over every word in the contract. Twenty-five years ago they were 30 pages long, now it can be anything up to 190. Something that really shows how these very peculiar transactions have evolved.

Does your job require tact?

Absolutely, and a lot of patience, as well as resistance to frustration. Sometimes you work on projects that come to nothing, despite you having dedicated time and effort to them.

What kind of call forces you to give it your all?

The civil aviation ones always make us rush. When you have to get a document in order to avoid interruptions in operations.

And what gives you the most satisfaction?

My first and greatest satisfaction was seeing the first commercial flight in operation. It was in June 2021, after a painstaking process given that we started the World2Fly project in the middle of lockdown. Seeing how they arrive at their destination with excited passengers on board makes me feel proud of my work, I feel like part of the puzzle in a huge team that I consider one big family.

When you're not thinking about planes, what do you spend your free time doing?

We dedicate almost all our spare time to three-cushion billiards. My daughter Ana is the runner-up in Spain and competes nationally and internationally, so we travel a lot with her.

In 2016, UNESCO named it Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In the 21st century, it's often mixed with electronic sounds, giving rise to technomerengue, something that had previously happened with hip-hop and other beats.

THE WORLD IN GOOD HANDS

MORE CONSCIOUS TOURISM IS POSSIBLE

Since European elites began to travel in the nineteenth century as a vital and formative experience, tourism has served to enhance the cultural, natural and social heritage of the world. Its development and democratisation made it one of the largest global industries in the last third of the twentieth century, but it also raised awareness of its impact. According to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), sustainable tourism “fully takes into account the current and future economic, social and environmental repercussions to meet the needs of visitors, industry, the environment and host communities.”

Fortunately today there are many examples of how tourism contributes to making the world a better place:

PRESERVING DOMINICAN CORAL WEALTH

The tourism industry is advancing in its commitment to preserve the natural and cultural diversity that it makes known to its users. Through Wave of Change, the Spanish operator Iberostar is working on the regeneration of the coasts and the seabed.

A program that has the complicity of World2Fly, and that, in the Dominican Republic, leads a scientific team that is responsible for analysing, preserving and regenerating mangroves and corals.

DISPOSAL OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

It is one of the challenges of the tourism industry for 2030. For years, the world’s main chains have been reducing the 150 million tons they consume per year. To do this, it replaces plastic bottles with glass, uses biodegradable toiletry kits in the rooms and buys food in bulk and from local producers, reducing packaging.

MORE RESPECTFUL FLIGHTS

Aviation has been connecting people and places for more than a century, and now it wants to do so in a more sustainable way. Biofuels and engines such as UltraFan will soon enable considerable savings in C02 emissions. World2Fly has its own decarbonisation programme in line with IATA’s 2050 net emissions target and works in every detail to make the flight experience less environmentally impactful, raising passengers’ awareness to be part of the change that the industry needs.
