Message from the Head of Department
As you view the students’ work, you will notice that some have developed more specific skills in the areas of engineering and technical innovation, whilst others have concentrated on sustainable design, styling or user-centred needs. These particular strengths help to identify the direction of their future careers in design, and suggest a focus for the students’ studies. I encourage you to speak with students about their designs and specialist studies. Many of the finalists in the Show have completed a placement year in industry as part of their Diploma in Professional Studies. As always, we are keen to discuss future placements and other opportunities for collaboration with our industry visitors. Very best wishes for the future to all our finalists. Enjoy the Show. Welcome to this annual celebration of the work of our final year students. A major feature of the Department is that students demonstrate a wide range of talents – from developing creative and innovative concepts through to the building and evaluation of their design prototypes. The students’ work is characterised by a broad range of skills and features which nurture, and demonstrate, the high level of creativity and innovation for which Loughborough has become recognised. This arises from the unique way in which we are able to blend industrial design with functional and engineering expertise, and apply this to the design of products. In doing this our students are able to move beyond traditional disciplines and engage in a truly multidisciplinary experience, which is always located within a framework of designing products.

Looking Forward
Loughborough University Design Centre The Department of Design and Technology is at the centre of an exciting new building development due for completion in June 2011. The University is planning to build on existing strengths in Design by bringing together world-leading teams in a new Design Centre. The new building will co-locate: Industrial and Product Design (ranked No 1 in the UK for Research and Teaching) Ergonomics and Safety Research Institute (ranked No 1 in the UK for Research) Elements of Engineering (ranked in the top 5 in the UK) Teacher Training in Design and Technology, and Science (ranked No 1 in the UK) Part of our School of Art & Design (noted for its wide range of activity from fine art to 3D Design) The vision:

Post Disciplinary Design: A Manifesto
• People who are not educated in design are significantly involved in the activity of designing. • The boundaries between traditional products have become blurred. • The edges between historical design disciplines are steadily dissolving and the work of designers now commonly transcend disciplinary borders such as interior design, product design and graphic design. • The focus of much new design is on the experiential rather than the physical or material. Design is a creative activity performed in support of people. As a profession, design has co-evolved together with the society that it serves, from pre-industrial times up to the present day. At each historical stage in its evolution design education and design practice have adapted to the needs of society, whether that be the mass production of essential consumer goods or the conception and branding of goods intended for quality of life enhancement through to the mass personalisation of products today. As we survey our 21st century horizon it becomes clear that designers no longer fit neatly into distinct specialist categories. Today’s rapidly changing social, economic, technological and environmental demands require individuals who are highly flexible and quickly able to adapt to different contexts in order to help create sustainable futures. Recognition of this changed scenario is essential if both design education and design practice are to meet the major challenges that face humanity. Post Disciplinary Design is a new movement, which is characterised by the concepts of multi-curiosity and of multi-disciplinary working. Post Disciplinary Design activity seeks knowledge and skills from all professions in support of activity, which is performed to enhance people’s lives. Multi-curiosity and multidisciplinary working are all-encompassing and inclusive approaches which begin with the careful observation and understanding of people’s needs so as to sensitively
shape solutions. This general approach creatively and seamlessly mixes relevant knowledge and skills from many sectors in a manner that is appropriate to 21st century endeavours. Post Disciplinary Design transcends traditional academic and professional boundaries. The emphasis is on the identification of opportunities and on the solving of problems using appropriate knowledge and methods from areas such as business studies, computer science, economics, engineering, human factors, management, physical sciences, psychology and the social sciences. Post Disciplinary Design does not recognise barriers and limitations to creative activity in support of people, and it does not limit itself to a specific sector such as fashion, product or graphic design. Post Disciplinary Design is a response to the growing need for training and professional practice, which can contribute effectively to any area of the modern global economy. It emphasises the many benefits that derive from the combination of a solid grounding in social and technological knowledge, coupled with a strong emphasis on personal expression and creativity. The approach is broadly aligned with modern policy objectives supported by the Cox Review, the Innovation Nation Report and the various documents treating the Creative Industries Agenda. With this manifesto the Post Disciplinary Design Group wishes to clarify its approach to design education and design practice. It is hoped that others will join us in our efforts to establish new knowledge and new practices, which enable the designers of tomorrow to face humanity’s future challenges with confidence. There is compelling evidence that design is in the midst of a minor revolution. The market driven years of the 1980s and 1990s have gone and the emphasis is now on a more human-centred agenda. Design in the early 21st century is characterised by a number of striking phenomena including:

Course Overview
Industrial Design and Technology BA/BSc (Hons) Product Design and Technology BSc (Hons) The course explores and develops designers’ abilities in three-dimensional designing and prototyping. It integrates the study of many design related subjects, whilst allowing students to maintain a focused strand of study appropriate to their background, skills and aspirations. All this is set in the context of creative and innovative practice.

Core components of the course include design practice, technology, drawing, manufacturing, CAD, design contexts and design communication. Students are able to select from a range of optional modules to supplement the core programme. These options can include further work on core topics, or develop expertise in different specialised areas. The optional modules are also used to define the degree award of BA or BSc.

The BA in Industrial Design and Technology has been devised to meet the needs and ambitions of students who wish to focus on highly user-centred approaches to design, including product appearance, strategic uses of design and sustainability issues, whilst still taking responsibility for decisions on manufacturing and the application of relevant technology. Whilst still engaging in the design of the total product, the BSc in Product Design and Technology provides an advanced understanding of mechanics, electronics and materials. Typical BA modules include User Led Innovation, Universal Design, Interaction Design, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Sustainable Design, Product Styling and Semantics and Issues in Design Education. Typical BSc modules include: Electronic Systems, Mechanics for Designers, Materials Science, and Computer Aided Modelling and Manufacture. A key feature, and particular strength, of the course is the development of fully functional appearance prototypes. Elements of BA and BSc modules are reflected in the nature of these prototypes. Throughout the programme students are given the oppurtunity to work on real applications for their designs through established companies.
Students taking the four year programme spend one year within industry, giving them valuable oppurtunities to gain professional experience. Students can gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) from their experience within industry. Past DPS placements have been conducted in association with the following companies: Hodges and Drake, Nissan, Nokia, Reebok, Richardson Sheffield, Smiths Medical Intl, Wright Design. Recently the Department has introduced masters (MDes, MSc and MA) programmes in Industrial Design. The Department also runs a long-established and highly respected Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in secondary Design and Technology. Currently, the Department has around 50 full and parttime staff in academic, technical, administrative and research roles. All academic staff are involved in research and this ensures students receive up to date teaching. The four research groups in the Department are Design Practice, Design Ergonomics, Design Education and Sustainable Design. In the UK’s 2008 Research Exercise, 55% of academic staff in the Department were acknowledged as producing design research that was “world leading”.This was the highest percentage score for all Art and Design departments in the UK. Its output has meant that it has been ranked at the top of the list for research into design by the Times Higher and The Guardian newspapers. This is an exceptional result for the Department.

Degree show theme
This year the degree show has grouped students projects into four sections. These have been designed to congregate products that share similarities whether in purpose or functionality. Each section has separate values to cater for the diverse nature of the multidisciplinary course. The four icons have been designed to represent threedimensional forms of their associated section. They act as an abstract depiction of the groups whilst creating fun characters through their chosen forms. The shapes have been applied across the layout and structure of the degree show.

We hope that by grouping the products, it will be easier to draw comparisons and similarities between projects while visiting the show.

Foresight This group encompasses medical products, inclusive design and sustainability. It represents forward thinking products that aim to improve the quality of life of its users and the environment within which it is used. Expect to find projects ranging from self-vaccination devices and music therapy products through to sustainable garden furniture and energy monitoring devices.
Social
Recreation This group is fairly self-explanatory. It includes all those projects with a sporting interest and those based around leisure activities. So, in this group you should expect to find projects such as triathlon shoes through to ergonomic rucksacks and motorcycle armour.
Habitat This group represents products that are used in living spaces such as the domestic and work environments. They are likely to be more day-to-day products, used around the home or in the office. Expect to find products ranging from interactive task lights through to battery powered lawn mowers and home composting kits.

The group represents products that aim to improve the experience of people within social environments through both interaction and infrastructure. Expect to find products ranging from drinks fountains through to communal seating.
