The 5 Strands of our Reading Strategy
1
Support Programmes for Targeted Pupils
Every pupil who needs it will have access to targeted intervention programmes to support them in closing the gaps to their chronological reading age. Reading mentors and trained specialist staff will focus on the delivery of Thinking Reading and Lexia as key interventions to achieve this.
Vocabulary Instruction in Every Subject
Training will be delivered to support teachers and leaders with delivery of effective vocabulary instruction so that they are able to explicitly teach academic and sophisticated vocabulary across contexts in their subject, enabling pupils to access and use academic terminology. Networks will share best practice and evaluate impact across the curriculum.

Form Time Fiction Reading
Form time sessions will be used for the delivery of the Form Time Fiction Programme for pupils in years 7-10. Pupils’ comprehension and fluency will improve by listening to teachers read aloud, who will be fully supported with training and resources. PSHE themes are also reflected in the texts which are carefully chosen for each age group.
Inspiration Canon and Pupil Reading Challenge
The Trust Canon includes a range of literature from across our curriculum areas. Pupils will be encouraged to read these texts and go beyond the classroom. The Canon will also form the basis of the Trust Reading Challenge competitions.

Wider Reading Culture
It is important that reading is embedded within the wider culture of our schools. Every school will have an effective library, led by an expert librarian, which acts as a hub for reading across the curriculum and beyond, and provides enrichment and competitive opportunities.
