SECONDARY SCHOOL

A GUIDE FOR YOUR NEXT STEPS

CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Year 6 at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy.

We recognise that Year 6 is an important year for both our Year 6 children and their parents/carers.

Across this year we will be working to support each child in making the important transition to high school whilst also supporting parents/carers in making the important decision of which school is suitable and how you can also guide and support your child through the process.

I hope the information contained in this booklet is useful and provides a good overview of the process around transitioning to high school and if you have any questions, we will always be happy to help further.

CHOOSING AN APPROPRIATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS

We encourage parents to look up different schools to see if they are appropriate for your child, and to explore the subjects they may specialise in.

Great Yarmouth Primary Academy is a feeder school for Great Yarmouth Charter Academy. This means that our students will get priority over other schools that may not be a feeder school, or are not in close enough proximity to Great Yarmouth Charter Academy.

If you need further advice on the school(s) where you have a high priority for a place, please contact Norfolk County Council. Please remember that for most schools, it is your child’s home address that determines which school they have a high priority for, not which school they are currently in. This is referred to in most Council documents as the ‘catchment area’.

Further details about the following schools can also be found in individual school brochures available from each school or on the school’s website.

You can apply online for all schools at www.admissionsonline.norfolk. gov.uk , or complete a paper application available from the Council’s website at www.norfolk.gov.uk/admissions. You can also request a copy of the application form from Customer Services on 0344 800 8020.

You can state up to three schools that you would like your child to go to. You will not increase your chance of obtaining a place at a popular school by putting only one school, or the same school more than once. Most schools will give a higher priority to children living in an area close to the school (the catchment area) and most are able to accommodate all pupils living in this area. We are a feeder school for Great Yarmouth Charter, so your child will be given priority ahead of other, non-feeder schools.

All admissions are dealt with by Norfolk County Council, who will notify families of admission results on the 1st March 2024. After these initial allocations, applications will be prioritised on the over-subscription criteria. Please do not contact Great Yarmouth Primary regarding admissions.

APPEALS PROCESS

If you are unable to get a place for your child at your preferred school, you will be offered a place at another school. You will be given the opportunity to appeal the decision to an independent panel, and information about how to appeal will be sent to you with your refusal letter. If you wish to appeal, you must contact the headteacher of that school, who will send you a form so that you can give your reasons for requesting a place at the school.

You are encouraged to attend your appeal in person. Your appeal will be heard in private and if you wish you may bring a friend, relative or representative with you. You will be given the opportunity to explain to the panel the reasons why you wish your child to attend the school. These reasons must be of a serious concern.

Appeals will be held in the second half of the summer term. The Council will keep a waiting list until the end of December of all children who have been refused a place at a higher ranked school. If any places become available, all those who have expressed a preference for a place at that school will be considered, including those that have applied after the closing date. The over-subscription rules will be used to determine who can be offered any available places.

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), they will have priority in attending your preferred secondary school.

If your child has a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND) we will provide further support with their transition to high school, including extra meetings and reviews to look at current resources, provision and adult support in place. We will also support your child in looking at what the provision will look like in the new setting. The transition process will be planned with the individual child’s needs in mind.

If you need any extra support, more information will be available on the school’s website, and you can also contact the school’s SENCo for extra information about the transition process and how the school can support your child further.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Inspiration Trust are now able to offer Music Scholarships at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy.

WHY DO WE OFFER MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS?

We value music education and want to encourage as many young people as we can to be musical. We understand that musical opportunities are not often accessible to everyone and our Trust wants to change that. The whole school community benefits when musical students choose our schools.

WHAT DO MUSIC SCHOLARS RECEIVE?

In return for being fully engaged in the musical life of our schools (i.e. being involved in school bands, choirs and ensembles), our music scholars receive all the brilliant opportunities of being a pupil of one of our schools, plus the following extra benefits:

• 2x free instrumental/vocal lessons per week (if you don’t already play the piano, one of these will probably be a piano lesson)

• Your music exam fees will be paid

• Time with a piano accompanist will be provided, where appropriate

• Termly masterclasses with the Inspiration Trust’s Director of Music

• A nominated scholarship mentor in your school

• Regular performance opportunities

• Regular opportunities to attend high-quality performances

HOW DO I APPLY?

Complete the application form and return it to us by the deadline published on the form. The form and more information is available on Great Yarmouth Charter Academy’s website.
