SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER PROGRAMME 2 0 2 3

With societies, sports groups, creative clubs, community and self development opportunities available to students, there are plenty of ways to get involved with extracurricular activities at Hewett Academy

In addition to meeting people, learning new skills and having fun, enrichment activities can be a great way to help you stand out to future employers and will give you something to talk about in job interviews.

Through participating in extra-curricular activities, students will develop soft skills which are highly valued by employers and build many important skills including resilience, team building and perseverance. Working backstage on a theatre production develops project management and communication skills, while performing on stage develops confidence, voice projection and listening skills

Soft skills, often called people skills or emotional intelligence (EQ), are defined as the ability to interact positively with others. Growing your abilities to resolve conflicts, solve problems, and provide excellent communication skills can lead to stronger and more positive relationships with colleagues, clients, and other professional contacts when in the work place

“A 2018 study of 21 million job adverts in the UK found that soft skills and non-academic achievements are central to getting through the first stage of the recruitment process.”

Academic grades are important to the choices that are available to you at the end of school. In addition to these grades, your ability to present your personality positively will provide opportunities than many others with the same outcomes but less developmental activities.

“In LinkedIn’s 2019 Global Talent Trends report, 89% of recruiters say that when a hire doesn't work out, it usually comes down to a lack of soft skills As reported in a McKinsey survey, the proportion of companies addressing empathy and interpersonal skills doubled in 2020. Between 2019 and 2020, skills like leadership and management became a much bigger priority for most companies, jumping ten percentage points year over year, from 40% to 50% ”

“Apart from professional success, soft skills are equally important for personal growth and development These skills empower individuals to communicate effectively, build relationships, and make sound decisions. Children can benefit from learning soft skills like empathy, resilience, and self-awareness to develop emotional intelligence and enhance their mental and emotional well-being.”

“When I was a teenager, I began to settle into school because I'd discovered the extracurricular activities that interested me: music and theatre.”

“Parents, first and foremost, it is important to...understand and recognise the activities your child is naturally gravitating towards. It’s important also to ensure that your child likes what he or she is doing. I believe in exposing children to as many hobbies & extracurricular activities

“People tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will descend like fine weather if you ’ re fortunate. But happiness is the result of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly.”

“Success is every minute you live. It’s the process of living. It’s stopping for the moments of beauty, of pleasure; the moments of peace. Success is not a destination that you ever reach. Success is the quality of the journey.”
