Hymers College Junior Monthly Messenger - October 2022

Message from the Head I very much hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Junior Monthly Messenger. One of the highlights of the week in the Junior School is our Commendation Assembly on Fridays. Individual children and groups are awarded commendations by staff, celebrating all kinds of endeavours, often related to our CARE Code. For example, it may be for kindness or for showing outstanding effort or attitude in class or in an extra-curricular activity. It is particularly heartening to see the spirit of supportiveness amongst the pupil body when commendations are awarded. Each half-term, we hold a Headteacher’s Commendation Assembly to celebrate children’s outstanding endeavours over the past few weeks; Mrs Walmsley then creates a beautiful display in the foyer, including some of the children’s first-class work (see page 3). We are delighted with the way the children have returned after the half-term break, rested and ready to continue stretching themselves both in and out of the classroom. With productions, concerts and much more to look forward to, the next few weeks in school look set to be an exciting time for all. Peter Doyle, Head of Junior School

Sportacular Success! The school has enjoyed considerable success this term in sport. The U11A Rugby squad has won the Harrison Cup and the 11A and 11B squad was joint winners of the HMC Rugby tournament. Reports of both competitions as well as the Sports Tour can be found in this edition of the Monthly Messenger. Massive congratulations to all involved! Big games have come thick and fast for our U11A Rugby squad. After an incredible performance just a week or so earlier at the HMC Rugby competition, at which the boys won the trophy for the first time in Hymers’ history, the team made their way across to QEGS Wakefield to participate in the Harrison Cup. This was the 34th year of the Harrison Cup, a tournament that has never been won by a Hymers team. Each and every player conducted themselves superbly all day, demonstrating all the core values of rugby throughout and showing some fantastic skill, pace and power. Consequently, Hymers lifted the Harrison Cup for the first time and rightly earned the plaudits of coaches and supporters alike. Well done to everyone involved – it was a pleasure to watch and the boys are a real pleasure to coach. It has been a phenomenal season so far and I am hopeful there will be more successes to come!
