Jagdhof summit tour at above 3,000m HABICHT – SEVEN SUMMITS Soaring to a height of 3,377m, this magnificent mountain is affectionately referred to as the Hoger. The climb is difficult and should only be attempted in good weather and with an experienced mountain guide. It also requires a high level of fitness: the 7.5-hour tour takes you on a 2,300m uphill climb and another 2,500m downhill. At the top, reap the benefits of your efforts: an unparalleled panoramic view which, on a clear day, stretches from the Northern Limestone Alps to the Western Zillertal Alps and even as far as the Dolomites. Bag it and add your name to the summit book. Fill your summit pass with stamps for all seven, and you could win a prize.

Tip: Consider an overnight stay at Innsbrucker HĂźtte (2,369m).

From there, it takes only three hours to climb to the top.

No. 2 Jagdhof leisurely hike STUBAI ALPINE HERBS – IN THE HEART OF NATURE’S PHARMACY An easy walk, mostly along wide forest trails, across Alpine meadows and in the shade of spruce forests. As you walk, herb expert Sandra Schönherr shares the secrets of Alpine and healing herbs that you might normally miss.

Mountain arnica, buckthorn and Alpine cat’s-foot are just some of the effective natural remedies you learn about.

This leisurely trail takes around 4 to 4.5 hours to walk. The stretch from Milders to the Auffangalm hut takes about 2 hours: an ideal stop to refuel and recharge.

Tip: For an easier stroll, opt for the flat forest trail to the Auffangalm. The route leading from the Josef car park in Oberbergtal is pushchair friendly.

No. 3 Jagdhof cultural hike FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MOUNTAINEERING PIONEER FRANZ SENN The unassuming founder of the German-Austrian Alpine Association would probably be embarrassed to know that people wish to follow in his footsteps, and that an Alpine refuge was named after him. You need to be sure-footed for this 4.5-hour, 8.5km hike and 550m climb, during which you see how passionate priest and mountain climber Franz Senn’s ideas and visions became reality. The rustic mountain cabins and high-Alpine paths he established helped acquaint tourists with the mountains whilst providing additional income for the poverty-stricken population.

Tip: Stop off at the Oberrissalm (1,750m) and Franz Senn (2,149m) huts for refreshments.

Jagdhof sunrise hike SUNRISE AND BREAKFAST AT THE KASERSTATTALM ALPINE HUT For a memory to cherish, experience the serenity of a sunrise in the mountains. The early start is well worth it: we meet our guide Armin at reception at 5.45am sharp! A 30-minute taxi ride takes us to the Kaserstattalm Alpine hut at 1,800m above sea level. As the sun begins to bathe them in light, experience the mountains at their splendid best from this superb vantage point. Afterwards we tuck into a traditional Alpine breakfast at the Kasterstattalm, where you can continue marvelling at the panoramic views before you.

From here, it’s a two-hour downhill hike back to the hotel.

The element of summer Soothing the senses and the soul Some dogs simply adore the water: typical family dogs such as labradors and golden retrievers only need to be within scent of water to get excited, sniffing the air and raring to jump in! To them, even the smallest stream is like a nugget of gold to a prospector. They splash about with uncontainable joy, their zest for life unmistakable. And it cannot but move you.

Then there’s children: watch them play and splash about in the park’s sandpit, utterly engrossed in their creative play. Carving out streams and lakes in the sand with their little watering cans, they too are drawn to water like moths to a flame. If you’re not careful, they’ll soon be soaking wet as well as ecstatic. Why is that?

Being in and around water makes us happy. Its colour alone can have a calming, purifying effect. And in the Alps, where the mountains are reflected in the endless turquoise of crystal-clear lakes, we feel a sense of amazement and wonder which captivates us – and we simply can’t get enough. Mere images of such blissful scenes instil a sense of longing in us. We are spellbound by photographs, drawings and paintings of streams, lakes, waterfalls and ponds. They represent our bond with the natural environment, making us feel at one with nature. As water changes and remains the same all at once, it imparts a sense of trust and security.

When you’re in the Stubai Valley, you can simply step outside to experience all the wonders of water!

Wild and untamed Magnificent mountains and deep valleys: water has left an indelible mark on the Tyrolean landscape. Emerging from tiny springs high in the mountains, the flow of water tumbles down as waterfalls, meanders in the soft curves of mountain streams, gathers in lakes, and finally emerges as a river, enriching the valley. The Stubai Valley offers you an unrivalled opportunity to gain an understanding of the water’s journey. Become an explorer and adventurer in three stages. At each stage of this trail, nature finds a new way to take your breath away – enjoy circular hikes or the attractive new access trail by walking the WildeWasserWeg trail.

Stage 1: WildeWasserArena – Ruetz cataract – Tschangelair Alm – Grawa waterfall/Grawa Alm, 1.5 hours, 120m climb, 3.5km distance. The path is pushchair-friendly; wheelchair users require assistance to negotiate the path.

Stage 2: Grawa waterfall – Sulzenau Alm – Sulzenau hut, 2.5 hours, 660m climb, 4km distance.

Stage 3: Sulzenau hut – Sulzenauferner glacier, 1.5 hours, 400m climb, 3km distance.

Ready to pedal to Alpine pastures and mountain trails. The whole of the Stubai Valley is ours to conquer thanks to our secret weapon: the mountain bike. Today is going to be varied, challenging and actionpacked. Tomorrow we’ll opt for leisure, tranquillity and harmony with nature.

Alban Pfurtscheller spends a lot of time cycling in the mountains, so we asked him to tell us more about his love of the sport.

What makes mountain biking so special?

For me it’s simply the sense of freedom. A bike allows you to cover great distances, which means you get to really explore the Stubai region.

There are 720km of cycle paths and trails in the Stubai Valley alone. Do you count the kilometres and elevation gains when you’re out on your bike?

To be honest, I do occasionally note how far I’ve climbed when I’m out on my bike. But my main focus is always on being outdoors in nature, keeping body and mind fit and healthy.

Autumn in the mountains: the Stubai Valley is at its colourful best as shades of green blend with rich reds. c i t n a m o r y dl in the Stubai Valley WilAdvent As well as being festive, Christmas in Tyrol can get quite thrilling. While the season’s calm descends with the first snowflakes making their way down from the sky, the Jagdhof’s preparations crank up into full swing. The region’s customs and crafts also really come into their own during Advent and Christmas.

Christmas lights and the aromas of pine and mulled wine: you can’t get more festive than that! Beautifully decorated stalls sell Tyrolean specialities, knitted hats and gloves, hand-decorated Christmas baubles and lots of other delightful crafts. It’s how Tyrol counts down to Christmas.

The Tyrolean nativity crib museum in Fulpmes is an awesome attraction for the whole family. Admire beautifully crafted nativity scenes – including the famed peephole cribs and a church crib labyrinth – ranging from ancient to modern, from precious artists’ creations to charming amateur offerings. The museum even has a walk-in nativity!
