FORGE YOUR OWN PATH If special experiences in natural surroundings are your thing, look no further than the Kitzbühel Alps. With a 2,500km network of footpaths, spectacular peaks, brilliant mountain bike trails and picturesque mountain huts, this is where you discover the Alps at their most beautiful.

MEMORABLE EXCURSIONS Pengelstein A magnificent hike with stunning views towards Aschau and Kirchberg. The summit hike to Pengelstein starts at Gasthof Skirast.

From here it’s uphill to the Pengelstein 1 lower terminus, and past the Haindlbauer farm in Issbühel. Walking along the Aschauer Höhenweg ridgeway, you pass the Sporthotel and the Kälberwaldalm hut before arriving at the Hiesleggalm hut where two trails lead to the Pengelstein restaurant at 1,939m above sea level.

Labalm Circular walk to the Labalm mountain hut with views of the Grosser Rettenstein, starting at the Spertental Kneipp facilities in Aschau where the new hiking trail to Unterer Grund begins. The waterfall on the right and the Falkenstein rock on the left offer an insight into the beauty of this unique landscape which is a designated nature reserve. We pass the Hintenbachalm mountain pasture where the Kasplatzl dairy invites you to tarry for refreshments. Enjoy a tour of the dairy with the Alpine herdsman and dairyman as your guide before tasting the delicious cheese. Afterwards, keep on the straight and gently rising path, past the

turning for Labalm, and go deeper into the valley to Karalm. After a boom barrier, we reach a bridge where the path to the right leads up to Stockeralm and Angereralm.

Just before Haglanderalm, switchbacks lead down to the Labalm. Return to Aschau via the Hintenbachalm dairy.

mountain is rewarded by spectacular views of the Hohe Tauern range and its threethousanders. This hike requires walkers to be surefooted, experienced mountaineers with good heads for heights. We recommend an early morning start. Set off by car to the Hintenbachalm in Unterer Grund where a steep path leads through the forest to Schöntalgraben and Schöntalalm. Walk on and into the glorious high mountain valley, past Schöntalscherm, and up to Schöntalquelle where a brief rest is recommended before making your way to the summit. If you’re in luck, you may catch a glimpse of the resident marmots, although

you may still hear their whistles if they decide to stay out of sight. Keep going along a path with switchbacks. At this point, the ascent becomes more difficult, and you will need to hold on to the rocks in some places. There’s a short section before you reach the top where climbing is unavoidable, but then you’ll have made it to the summit cross at 2,366m above sea level on one of the Kitzbühel Alps’ highest mountains. Now it’s time to simply savour the moment: on a clear day, you will be able to see the peaks of the Hohe Tauern range, and

the two highest mountains in Austria – the Grossglockner and the Grossvenediger – as well as the Zillertal Alps. Return by the same route.

The 18-hole, par 72 golf course is spread across 5,920m, and is the most recently established course in the region. The fairways are flat and easy to walk. However, they are also demanding: if you’re likely to play an imprecise game on this gorgeous yet narrow fairway you’ll need to take along plenty of balls.
