In one of the most stunning locations of the Alps, on the high plateau of the Thiersee Valley at an altitude of 900m, a place of unique harmony and wellbeing awaits. Nestled within this natural paradise, the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof is dedicated to the philosophy of Ayurveda, gently integrating it into European culture with the utmost care. Here, at the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, guests experience the power of the holistic Ayurvedic philosophy – without the need for long haul travel to the Indian subcontinent, the birthplace of Ayurveda. Our Ayurveda specialists from India, Gaurav Sharma and Chef de Cuisine Balvinder Walia, work together with Dr Alaettin Sinop (conventional GP and specialist in naturopathic medicine), to ensure that you are looked after with competence and professionalism, whilst promoting a deeper understanding between the cultures of east and west.

Tyrol meets India Our design concept is based entirely on the motto ‘Tyrol meets India’. Local timber, some of which is recycled and sourced from ancient hay barns, and other high quality materials create a harmonious synergy with our vibrant Indian colour schemes. Exquisite handcrafted sculptures of Buddha and elements of creative décor define the ambience. The influence of the Indian subcontinent is also apparent in the new suites as well as the refurbished accommodation. The entire resort was designed on the basis of Vastu Shastra to enable positive energy to flow freely.

The Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof offers a comprehensive programme including short AyurDetox breaks, intensive detoxification programmes, rejuvenation weeks and Rasayana treatments. However, the queen of Ayurvedic treatments is Panchakarma: a two-part therapy programme that includes preparation as well as the central treatment.

A range of skills and expertise characterise the yoga programmes of our Ayurveda resort, and are led by yoga teacher Lisa Mauracher. Our guests come to understand that this holistic philosophy is eminently more than an effective body workout. Like Ayurveda, yoga deals with the psyche as well as the body.

Public rooms & restaurants Spirit Lounge Dedicated to the planets and the elements, the Spirit lounge is a retreat that presents itself in a different light on a daily basis, addressing different body chakras. This is where our guests sample Ayurvedic teas at the tea bar and delight in the all-pervading sense of healing harmony. The oak floor made of reclaimed wood from ancient barns creates a pleasing, down-to-earth contrast to the joyful multicoloured Indian theme.

Anapurna Buffet This is where breakfast and afternoon tea are served.

Buddha’s Place The restaurant has also been fitted with a solid oak floor and connects to the Spirit lounge, thus creating a unity with the Indra Garden, a conservatory dedicated to the Indian god of war, thunder and rain.

Resort overview AyurvedaCentre In Ayurvedic philosophy, the body is the temple that houses our spirit. The spaces we have created in the AyurvedaCentre have been designed to live up to this ideal. ‘Tyrol meets India’: this idea is also at the heart of the design concept for the AyurvedaCentre. This is where all the senses are soothed in a relaxed, positive atmosphere and gently stimulated by exhilarating fragrances, soothing sounds and an encounter with natural elements. The names of Indian gods were chosen for the treatment rooms – for instance, that of Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty.

Shiva & Shakti set the tone Welcome to our remodelled AyurvedaCentre Shiva, the masculine principle, and Shakti, the feminine principle: these two divine powers complement and balance each other in complete harmony, and now accompany you on your journey through our redesigned world of wellbeing. The dual manifestations of the one divine consciousness attend to you as you reconnect with a sense of your true self. In our new Moon Sauna for instance, herbal scents and soothing darkness envelop you as you close your eyes, relax ever more deeply, turn your attention inward and come to rest in a pleasant 50°C. Our 60°C Sun Sauna offers heat and fire: the pleasing scent of honey and the profound power of onyx combine to inspire self-trust and boost vital energy. For especially gentle radiant heat and soothing deep relaxation, we have also installed four new infrared cabins.

Afterwards, savour the calm ambience of the Shiva Shakti Lounge – it is a special place of relaxation and wellbeing.

The sauna area is open daily from 10am until 7pm, and the panoramic indoor swimming pool is open from 7.30am until 7.30pm.

Resort overview The garden of five elements The Sonnhof is in itself a place of spiritual energy.

Similar to acupuncture points on a human body, places of spiritual energy are special locations where strong forces concentrate. The ‘Shiva Shakti’ energy garden was hence designed in accordance with the ancient Indian Vastu Shasta teachings, and is aligned on the principle of the five elements. Within this tranquil garden there are several places where the spiritual energy flow is particularly effective. People who enter these places with sensitivity and respect are rewarded by their concentrated energy:

• Place of bliss: this place of spiritual energy unites all that is intended to be joined. Awareness of divine perfection in creation brings about a state of bliss. Inner peace is found during mountain meditation sessions against the stunning backdrop of the peaks of the Wilder Kaiser.

• Place of the Buddha and compassion: this deeply tranquil space at the centre of the energy garden helps to establish inner harmony.

• The rose garden – portal to the path of the heart: the roses that grow across this area represent unconditional love – the space is all about supporting pain relief and expanding our consciousness of love.

Regional herb garden When it comes to food, the Sonnhof really lives up to its ‘Tyrol meets India’ motto. We carefully grow and tend regional herbs in our herb garden and use them in the kitchen to season our Ayurvedic dishes.

• Ganesha (elephant god) and Buddha: in order to experience heaven in the energy garden, we must first pass the statues of Ganesha (son of Shiva & Parvati) and Buddha.

Bird table In the Ayurvedic teachings there is space for all of God’s creatures. Guests can let their thoughts roam and enjoy the magnificent natural setting as they watch the birds and listen to their song.

• Shakti fire place: this is where the feminine aspects of creation make themselves felt in all their intensity. It is a place of transformation that is dedicated to meditation and letting go. The fire in the copper bowl creates the backdrop for intense yoga experiences.

• Chakra spaces: the seven Chakra spaces are arranged around the fire bowl in ascending order, from the Root Chakra to the Lotus Chakra.

When we enter these spaces, we access the energy of the chakras and allow it to flow freely.

Natural pond This water feature provides a natural habitat for wildlife – as a source of life where guests find inner peace.

Retreats of quiet meditation Generous areas for rest or yoga practice are dotted throughout the garden of elements; they invite you to find relaxation and restoration.

Healing & philosophy

Ayur Veda – the science of life ...

Ayurvedic treatments aim to consolidate good health and gently remedy disorders, while at all times focusing on the uniqueness of the person.

Following a thorough diagnostic test, an individual treatment and nutrition programme to suit your constitutional type is compiled and supervised by our experienced team.

‘Instead of focusing on fighting symptoms, Ayurvedic medicine applies a holistic concept that treats the roots of imbalances for long term healing and equilibrium.’

Ayurveda differentiates between three types of constitution, allocating different treatment methods to each type. These regulatory principles are also referred to as the three Doshas and determine our physical, spiritual and mental characteristics. According to Ayurvedic teachings, we are healthy and happy when the Doshas are in harmony with each other.

VATA. People who are slender, flexible, have a low body mass index, and tend to be constantly on the move are the Vata type.

Although they are quick thinkers, they also tend to forget things quickly and are prone to anxiety.

PITTA. Pitta types are of medium build, are agile and good at decision-making. They are born leaders who, however, easily lose their temper and are prone to anger.

KAPHA. Kapha types are heavyset and take things calmly. Such people keep their head in stressful situations, are easy going and have a tendency towards idleness. Their outstanding characteristics are patience, fortitude and gentleness.

Your individual constitution type results from the ratio between the three Doshas in your body and is at the centre of your nutritional and treatment plan. The goal is to balance the three forces, thereby enhancing health, performance and happiness.

In the Ayurvedic view of the world there is a correspondence between the body and nature. Health is a state of dynamic balance between the body’s elements. Illness indicates an imbalance. Based on the three pillars of Ayurvedic Nutrition, Diagnosis & Treatment and Yoga, we can counteract such imbalances by taking a holistic approach to health.

In addition to looking at the symptoms of illnesses, we also consider their causes. This is an effective method for restoring harmony between the body, mind and spirit.

Pioneer of European Ayurveda® The mastermind and pioneer behind European Ayurveda® is Brigitte Mauracher.

Brought up in a nature-loving family, her interest in native medicinal herbs and their effects began when she was just a child. Over 15 years ago she came across Ayurveda and embarked on a thorough study of the subject, eventually becoming a devotee of this holistic art of healing. Brigitte Mauracher was of the opinion that ‘there is a reason why we have been born in Europe, and we should work with the local treasures that nature has given us’. Her determination, relentless energy and spiritual affinity made her a pioneer in the development of European Ayurveda® and the founder of the Sonnhof’s AyurvedaCentre.

Authenticity & expertise Thanks to our robust knowledge, specialists from India, experienced physicians and the Sonnhof team of experts, we are able to integrate Ayurveda’s holistic approach into our way of life. The result is a unique blend of Ayurvedic philosophy and European culture, which we call ‘European Ayurveda®’.

Pulse diagnosis by Ayurveda specialist Gaurav Sharma • Trained as an Ayurveda specialist physician (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery) • State certified Ayurvedic practitioner Pulse diagnosis is an essential component and the foundation of many of our treatments.

Years of experience have taught Gaurav Sharma how to interpret the pulse beat on the wrists and gain valuable information on the overall energetic condition of the body.

To do this, he applies his index, middle and ring fingers to the inside of the guest’s wrist, feeling the pulse by applying different amounts of pressure. In addition to pulse diagnosis, the Ayurveda specialist also asks detailed

questions about nutrition and digestion, sleeping habits and about life in general.

This information enables him to categorise a person as a Vata, Pitta or Kapha constitutional type and to draw up appropriate individual treatment and nutrition programmes.

Ayurvedic nutrition – the foundation of a healthy life Nutrition is extremely important in Ayurveda, and it is essential to the success of this holistic form of therapy.

‘Food and drink that delights the senses with its appearance, fragrance, taste and texture, and is taken in accordance with the principles of Ayurveda creates the energetic essence of all living things. It strengthens body, its tissues and the spirit, and improves physical appearance.

The health effects of such foods can be directly perceived by each individual’ (from the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Ayurvedic text).

In the ancient Indian scriptures, food was already considered the cornerstone of a long and healthy life. The right diet helps us develop physically, mentally and spiritually.

All our dishes are meat free to ensure that even at the stage of food intake, your body is not subjected to any unnecessary stress. European Ayurvedic cuisine is a special kind of culinary art. Our cooking is characterised by creativity, the use of herbs and spices for flavour, and gentle preparation methods.

European Ayurvedic cuisine as a culinary brand With ‘European Ayurvedic cuisine’, we have taken the principles of Indian healing and adapted them to suit western taste buds, thus creating our very own culinary brand. It takes into account the principles and recipes of Ayurveda for restoring vital energy balance whilst appealing to European tastes by using first-class products, locally sourced from the region’s markets and farms. In addition to classic Indian ingredients such as coriander, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, European herbs including thyme, basil and fennel are given an opportunity to unfold their healing powers.

‘The combination of herbs, spices and other ingredients has a balancing and cleansing effect and also stimulates the metabolism.’

Each of us is individual, and we all have different requirements. Therefore, Ayurvedic cuisine takes into account the three constitutional types of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

We recommend the appropriate menu for your constitutional type in line with the package of your choice. Our Ayurvedic menu is tridoshic and therefore suitable for all constitutions.

The day begins with ... a generous breakfast buffet that combines regional and Ayurvedic specialities.

For lunch ... we invite you to sample our Pitta buffet, which is served from 12 noon until 1.30pm. Help yourself to delicious soups, salads, appetisers and desserts.

In the afternoon ... let us treat you to a Vata teatime, complete with a tea ceremony and healthy snack.

In the evening ... we offer you a choice of three menus: the Panchakarma & detox menu, the Ayurvedic rejuvenation menu, and the classic Sonnhof menu.

Meals for guests on treatment programmes Our Ayurveda specialist Gaurav Sharma provides guests on an Ayurvedic treatment programme with detailed instructions regarding meals. During detox or Panchakarma treatments, we only serve vegetarian food. We will also prescribe valuable and effective medicinal plants to any guests with health problems.

Guests on the Panchakarma treatment programme take their main meal at noon – they enjoy a 3-course meal and restrict their evening meal to a light snack.

Guests on the Intense Rasayana build-up programme are placed on a restorative Ayurvedic diet.

The majority of the produce used in our cooking is regionally sourced and organic.

All meals are included in the Sonnhof Signature Cuisine full board and are served in the Buddha’s Place restaurant and in Indra’s Garden.

Panchakarma – the queen of Ayurveda treatments Cleanse & detoxify Start afresh & grow Encounter your true self – observe your inner light Panchakarma, the ‘five therapeutic measures’, encompasses all five pillars of Ayurvedic purification and is the most effective and profound detoxification method on both a physical and spiritual level. Of all available detox treatments, this is the most effective in releasing toxins and waste products from the body, because it deals not only with watersoluble waste, but also with the much more significant fat-soluble toxins. This restores the body’s self-healing powers to full capacity, thereby improving our ability to perform – even as we grow older.

All Panchakarma treatments begin with a diagnosis and are conducted in two parts. The preparatory treatment provides the basis for the detoxification process. Its deeply harmonising effects unfold during the main treatment, which is supported by soothing Ayurvedic massages. Heat therapy, Ushnodaka therapy, herbal medicine, yoga, qigong and meditation are further elements of Panchakarma, which is available as a 7, 10, 14 or 21-day package.

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment method and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The theory of acupuncture is based on the assumption that qi (vital energy) flows through channels known as meridians.

Disturbances of this energy flow lead to disease and pain, and can be caused by a number of factors including poor diet, environmental factors, emotional distress and physical strain.

Manual medicine treats blockages of the spine and joints, by means of palpation.

Stimulating acupuncture points with needles, pressure or moxa can remove disturbances in the energy flow. The aim of acupuncture is to achieve health and energetic equilibrium.

Combining Ayurvedic therapy and acupuncture further strengthens the body’s regulatory powers and leads to an enhanced integration of individual treatments.

Gentle manipulation of the cervical spine to remove blockages is an effective supplement to the traditional methods that are applied to enhance Ayurveda’s healing effect. The aim of this special form of treatment is to free the flow between head and torso, thus achieving harmony between mind and body.

Ayurveda Plus neurocybernetic massage therapy/HNC Neurocybernetic massage therapy involves the kinesiological assessment of systemic disturbances. This releases hidden blockages and distortions, stimulates the excretion of toxins (drugs, vaccines, anaesthetics etc.), locates and disengages stressors that cause function blockages, and triggers emotional resolution. Ayurveda Plus Acupressure meridian massage (APM) The aim of acupuncture meridian massage is to restore the flow of qi energy in all of the body’s systems and to correct energetic imbalances.

APM offers a symbiosis of meridian massage, acupuncture without needles, energetic spinal therapy, moxibustion (traditional Chinese medicine heat therapy), cupping, and Gua sha (a traditional Chinese ‘spooning’ massage).

APM is used to strengthen the centre of the body and the organs, to deal with cold, spinal and joint issues, it provides support in pregnancy and strengthens the human organism when stressed or exhausted.

The traditional technique of pulse diagnosis offers us useful insights for today Vata, Pitta, Kapha – these are the three Doshas, or vital energies of Ayurvedic teaching. Pulse diagnosis is used to determine a person’s constitutional type and to detect disorders in the body. This allows the Ayurvedic practitioner to draw conclusions about a patient’s health and wellbeing. According to Ayurveda, we are only healthy and happy when the Doshas are in harmony with each other.

Gaurav Sharma notes: ‘Nowadays, we see many more Vata types, people who are constantly in motion, and Pitta types, who are prone to anger. The reason for this lies in the extreme busyness of everyday life, especially at work, although the increased heat produced by global warming is also leading to an upsurge in Pitta types.’

At the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof pulse diagnosis forms part of several of our programmes. Based on a guest’s constitutional type, we draw up an appropriate individual treatment and nutrition programme.

Pulse diagnosis for all Panchakarma treatments is carried out by Gaurav Sharma. Thanks to many years of experience in this field, he is able to interpret the pulse beat on both wrists and gain valuable information on the overall energetic condition of the body. To do this, he applies his index, middle and ring fingers to the inside of each wrist, feeling the pulse by applying different amounts of pressure.

‘Pulse diagnosis provides information about the current condition of body, mind and emotions and about their interaction. Disharmonies such as indigestion, inflammation or hormonal disorders are identified and can then be rebalanced’, the Ayurvedic specialist explains.

In addition to pulse diagnosis, Gaurav Sharma also asks detailed questions about nutrition and digestion, sleeping habits and about life in general. Only then can a person be properly categorised as Vata, Pitta or Kapha constitutional type. Vata characterises people who are slender, constantly on the move, forgetful and prone to anxiety. By contrast, Pitta types are of medium build, good at decisionmaking and predisposed to anger. Kapha types have a calm nature, keep their heads in stressful situations and have a tendency towards to idleness. Individual constitutional types result from the ratio between these three Doshas. The goal is to balance these three forces, thereby enhancing health, performance and contentment.
