In one of the most stunning locations of the Alps – on the high plateau of the Thiersee Valley at 900m altitude – a place of unique harmony and wellbeing awaits. Nestled within this natural paradise, the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof is dedicated to the philosophy of Ayurveda, integrating it gently and carefully with European culture. Here, at the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, guests experience the power of the holistic Ayurvedic philosophy – without the need for long haul travel to the Indian subcontinent, the birthplace of Ayurveda. Our Ayurveda specialists from

India, Gaurav Sharma and Chef de Cuisine Balvinder Walia, work closely with Dr (med) Alaettin Sinop (conventional GP & specialist in naturopathic medicine), ensuring that you are looked after with competence and professionalism, whilst promoting a deeper understanding between the cultures of east and west.

As pioneers of European Ayurveda with a holistic approach, we set new standards and are prepared to meet the challenging health issues of today’s western society.

Tyrol meets India The Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof was reopened after renovations and extension works in June 2012. Our design concept is based entirely on the motto ‘Tyrol meets India’. Local timber, some of which recycled and sourced from ancient hay barns, and high quality materials create a harmonious synergy with vibrant Indian colour schemes. Exquisite handcrafted sculptures of Buddha and elements of creative decor define the ambience. The influence of the subcontinent is clearly noticeable in our new suites as well as the refurbished accommodation. The entire resort was designed on the basis of Vastu Shastra to enable positive energy to flow freely.

The Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof offers a comprehensive programme including short AyurDetox breaks, intensive detoxification programmes, rejuvenation weeks and Rasayana treatments. However, the queen of Ayurvedic treatments is Panchakarma: a twopart therapy plan including preparation as well as central treatment. Ayurvedic specialist Gaurav Sharma, physician Dr Sinop and Christina Mauracher assist with advice and guidance throughout your stay.

In Ayurvedic philosophy, our body is a temple housing our spirit. The various spaces in the AyurvedaCentre are designed to live up to this ideal. This is where the senses are soothed in a relaxed, positive atmosphere whilst gently stimulated with exhilarating fragrances, peaceful sounds and an encounter with the elements. The names of Indian gods were chosen for the treatment rooms, for instance that of Lakshmi – the goddess of beauty.

Public rooms & restaurants • Spirit lounge Dedicated to the planets and elements, the Spirit lounge is a retreat presenting itself altered each day, addressing different body chakras. This is where our guests enjoy various Ayurvedic teas at the tea bar and delight in the all-embracing sense of healing harmony.

The oak floor made of reclaimed wood from ancient barns creates a pleasant, down-toearth contrast to the joyful multi-coloured Indian theme.

• Anapurna buffet This is where breakfast and afternoon tea are served.

• Buddha’s Place The restaurant has also been fitted with a solid oak floor and connects to the Spirit lounge, thus creating a unity with the Indra Garden, a conservatory dedicated to the Indian god of war, thunder and rain.

Our three themed saunas also follow Ayurvedic principles: the Kapha (earth/water) detoxifying steam bath, Pitta (fire/water) herbal clay sauna, and the Vata (air/ether) gemstone saltwater therapy room. Before and after the treatment, the Swasthya (‘inner settling’) peace room provides an ideal environment for rest and relaxation. The jewel in the crown of the AyurvedaCentre is the panoramic indoor pool with direct access to gardens and energy fountain. Resort overview The garden of five elements The Sonnhof is in itself a place of spiritual energy. Similar to acupuncture points on a human body, places of spiritual energy are exceptional locations where strong forces concentrate. The Shiva Shakti energy garden was hence designed in accordance with the ancient Indian Vastu Shasta teachings, and is aligned on the principle of the five elements.

Within this tranquil garden are several places where the flow of spiritual energy is particularly effective, bringing energy to the fore. People who enter these places with sensibility and respect are rewarded by their concentrated energy: • The rose garden – portal to the path of the heart: the roses growing across this area represent unconditional love – the space is all about supporting pain relief and expanding our consciousness of love.

• Ganesha (elephant god) and Buddha: in order to experience heaven in the energy garden, we must first pass the statues of Ganesha (son of Shiva & Parvati) and Buddha.

• Shakti fire space: this is where the female aspects of creation make themselves felt in all their intensity. It is a place of transformation that is dedicated to meditation and letting go. The fire in the copper bowl creates the backdrop for powerful Yoga experiences.

• Chakra spaces: the seven Chakra spaces are arranged around the fire bowl in ascending order, all the way from Root Chakra to Lotus Chakra.

When we enter these spaces, we access the energy of the chakras, allowing it to flow without restraint.

• Place of bliss: this place of spiritual energy unites all that is intended to be joined. Awareness of divine perfection in creation brings about a state of bliss. Inner peace is found during mountain meditation sessions against the stunning backdrop of the peaks of the Wilder Kaiser.

• Place of the Buddha and compassion: this deeply tranquil space at the centre of the energy garden helps to establish inner harmony.

Regional herb garden When it comes to food, the Sonnhof really lives up to its ‘Tyrol meets India’ motto. We grow and tend regional herbs in our herb garden and use them in the kitchen to season our Ayurvedic dishes.

Bird table In the Ayurvedic teachings there is space for all of God’s creatures. Guests can let their thoughts roam and enjoy the magnificent natural setting as they watch the birds and listen to their song.

Natural pond This water feature provides a natural habitat for wildlife – as a source of life where guests can find inner peace.

Healing & philosophy

Ayur Veda – the science of life ...

Ayurvedic treatments aim to consolidate good health and gently remedy disorders, while at all times focusing on the uniqueness of the person. Following a thorough diagnostic test, an individual treatment and nutrition programme to suit your constitutional type is compiled and supervised by our experienced team.

‘Instead of focusing on fighting symptoms, Ayurvedic medicine applies a holistic concept that treats the roots of imbalances for long term healing and equilibrium.’

Ayurveda differentiates between three types of constitution, allocating different treatment methods to each type. These regulatory principles are also referred to as the three Doshas and determine our physical, spiritual and mental characteristics. According to Ayurvedic teachings, we are healthy and happy when the Doshas are in harmony with each other.

VATA. People who are slender, flexible, have a low body mass index, and tend to be constantly on the move are the Vata type.

Although they are quick thinkers, they also tend to forget things quickly and are prone to anxiety.

PITTA. Pitta types are of medium build, agile and good at decision-making. They are born leaders who, however, easily lose their temper and are prone to anger.

KAPHA. Kapha types are heavyset and take things calmly. They keep their head in stressful situations, are easy going and have a tendency towards idleness. Their outstanding characteristics are patience, fortitude and gentleness.

Your individual constitution type results from the ratio between these three Doshas in your body, it is at the centre of your nutritional and treatment plan. The goal is to balance the three forces, thereby enhancing health, performance and happiness.

The three pillars of health Ayurveda is much more than merely a healing method or a culinary trend – it is a veritable way of life! Ayurveda means embracing new happiness, improving our health and developing a profound understanding of self, our personal development and inner peace. In the Ayurvedic view of the world there is a correspondence between body and nature. Health is a state of dynamic balance amongst body elements – illness indicates an imbalance. Based on the three pillars of Ayurvedic nutrition, Diagnosis & treatment and Yoga, we can counteract such imbalances by taking a holistic approach to health. This means that in addition to looking at the symptoms of illnesses, we also consider their causes – hence an effective method for restoring harmony between body, mind and spirit.

Pioneer of European Ayurveda The mastermind and pioneer behind all of this is Brigitte Mauracher. Brought up in a nature-loving family, her interest in native medicinal herbs and their effects began when she was just a child. Over 15 years ago she came across Ayurveda and embarked on a thorough study of the subject, eventually becoming a devotee of this holistic art of healing. Brigitte Mauracher was of the opinion that, ‘there is a reason why we have been born in Europe, and we should work with the local treasures that nature has given us’. Her determination, relentless energy and spiritual affinity made her a pioneer in the development of European Ayurveda and the founder of the Sonnhof’s AyurvedaCentre.

Pulse diagnosis is an essential component and the foundation of many of our treatments.

Here at the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof, this highly sophisticated diagnostic method is only carried out by our Ayurvedic specialist Gaurav Sharma. His years of experience have taught him to interpret the pulse beat on the wrists and gain valuable information on the overall energetic condition of the body. To do this, he applies his index, middle and ring fingers to the inside of the guest’s wrist, feeling the pulse by applying different amounts of pressure. In addition to pulse diagnosis, Gaurav Sharma also asks detailed questions about nutrition and digestion, sleeping habits and about life in general. This information enables him to categorise a person as a Vata, Pitta or Kapha constitutional type and to draw up appropriate individual treatment and nutrition programmes.

Ayurveda Specialist Gaurav Sharma is happy to communicate with our guests in German or English.

Medical expertise and holistic concepts Dr (med) Alaettin Sinop • General medical practitioner with a focus on naturopathy He specialises in acupuncture, Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Manual Therapy and Kinesiology. Dr Sinop advocates a meaningful combination of conventional medicine and naturopathic treatments, he is always guided by the principle that he must understand and treat his patients not only from the point of view of a doctor but also with emphasis of the human aspect.

Ayurvedic nutrition – the foundation of a healthy life Nutrition plays a prominent role in Ayurvedic medicine, which is why it is considered one of the three pillars of health. Vegetarian Ayurvedic food has a beneficial effect on the body and can prevent disease. The Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof’s vegetarian diet dispenses with meat for ethical reasons, but also for reasons of health and nutritional psychology. Ayurvedic vegetarian food is easily digestible and promotes recovery.

‘Ayurvedic cooking is not dogmatic, hence nothing is forbidden and there are no strict rules. Although it is mostly plant-based, it is not a purely vegetarian cuisine.’

European Ayurvedic cuisine as a culinary brand With European Ayurvedic cuisine, we have taken the principles of Indian healing and adapted them to suit western tastebuds, thus creating our very own culinary brand. It takes into account the principles and recipes of Ayurveda for restoring vital energy balance whilst appealing to European tastes by using first-class products, locally sourced from the region’s markets and farms. In addition to classic Indian ingredients such as coriander, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, European herbs including thyme, basil and fennel are given the opportunity to unfold their healing powers.

‘The combination of herbs, spices and other ingredients has a balancing and cleansing effect and stimulates the metabolism.’

Each of us is individual and we all have different requirements. Therefore Ayurvedic cuisine takes into account the three constitution types of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

We recommend the appropriate menu for your constitutional type in line with the package of your choice. Our Ayurvedic menu is tridoshic and therefore suitable for all constitutional types.

Your day begins ... with a generous breakfast buffet combining regional and Ayurvedic specialities.

For lunch ... we invite you to sample our Pitta buffet, which is served from 12 noon until 1.30pm.

Help yourself to delicious soups, salads, appetisers and desserts.

In the afternoon ... let us treat you to a Vata teatime, complete with a tea ceremony and healthy snack.

In the evening ... we offer you a choice of three menus: the Panchakarma & detox menu, the Ayurvedic rejuvenation menu, and the classic Sonnhof menu.

The meals Our Ayurveda specialist Gaurav Sharma will provide guests on an Ayurvedic treatment programme with detailed instructions regarding meals. During detox or Panchakarma treatments, we only serve vegetarian food. We will also prescribe valuable and effective medicinal plants to any guests with health problems.

Guests on the Panchakarma treatment programme take their main meal at noon – they enjoy a 3-course meal and then restrict their evening meal to a light snack.

Guests on the intense Rasayana build-up programme are placed on a restorative Ayurvedic diet.

Most of the produce used in our cooking is regionally sourced and organic.

All meals are included in the Sonnhof Signature Cuisine full board and are served in the Buddha’s Place restaurant and in Indra’s garden.

Ayurvedic cookery classes with Johannes Baumgartner ‘It isn’t just the recipe that counts. It is the art and devotion that goes into the preparation that makes all the difference when creating a delicious Ayurvedic meal.’

Ayurvedic cooking is a timeless wisdom combining food and spices for a harmonising effect and unforgettable flavour. Ayurvedic spices together with select ingredients help our system maintain inner balance, a healthy immune system and a wonderful sense of wellbeing.

The cookery course is for 3.5 hours per day, spanning three days. It begins with a theoretical module and is followed by practical cookery lessons. Our lessons are easy to understand, the dishes are simple and fun to prepare. Naturally, you will also learn how to deal with spices in the right order, how to make your own samosas as well as other traditional snacks and sweets. This is followed by a shared meal as we enjoy the delicious Ayurvedic dishes we have prepared. There is plenty of time to answer any questions after the meal.

Class times: Friday from 5-8pm, Saturday & Sunday from 10am-1pm. 2 day cookery courses take place on Saturday & Sunday from 10am-1pm.

Classes are held at Haus Hubertus am See in Vorderthiersee

Class details: On day one – Friday – you are given an insight into the origin and philosophy of Ayurvedic cooking and there will be an introduction to Ayurvedic curative spices, herbs and ingredients. We will then prepare spicy dishes, Indian desserts and drinks for you to enjoy later in the evening.

On day two – Saturday – you will learn about the effects of sattvas, rajas and tamas on your health as well as the theory of harmony and fundamental principles of Ayurvedic food.

Then we will cook sattvic dishes that promote good health, vitality and inner harmony.

On day three – Sunday – we present a synopsis of ingredients and their nutritional properties, and provide you with an understanding of rasa theory and of the six tastes of food.

To conclude the course, we will create an Ayurvedic feast of divine delicacies. This feast will be enjoyed at lunchtime when there will be another opportunity to ask questions.

About the course instructor: Johannes Baumgartner was born in Switzerland in 1976. His spiritual quest led him to the Indian Himalayas and then to the country’s mystical east where he spent many years cooking for monks in temples.

During this time he collected hundreds of authentic recipes. Johannes Baumgartner gives vegetarian cookery classes, lectures on eastern philosophy, provides special event catering services and organises trips to India.

Yoga & spirituality Gentle physical exercise equals relaxation and regeneration for the spirit. Yoga can support you on your way towards inner peace, equilibrium and sustainable health.

We have made a conscious choice to include Yoga practice in our programme to complement the treatments and therapies we offer. Yoga means union or yoking and includes physical and breathing exercises supported by the practice of meditation. Yoga works holistically, affecting body, mind and spirit; it can ease disorders such as insomnia and migraines as well as alleviate mood swings and anxiety.

Yoga can harmonise all of the body’s processes and organ functions, it can relax the nerves and ensures supple muscles and joints. Yoga calms the mind by stilling the flow of thought and stabilising emotions. Our Yoga practice also shows us what our limits are, which brings about greater mindfulness and awareness. From a spiritual point of view, Yoga leads to higher consciousness and greater gentleness towards our environment and ourselves.

All guests are welcome to attend our twicedaily Yoga classes. Teachers are also available for individual tuition, which is the best way to address individual needs and goals.

Panchakarma – the queen of Ayurveda treatments Cleanse & detoxify Start afresh & grow Encounter your true self – observe your inner light Panchakarma, the ‘five therapeutic measures’, encompasses all five pillars of Ayurvedic purification and is the most effective and profound detoxification method on a physical and spiritual level. Of all available detox treatments, this is the most effective in releasing toxins and waste products from the body, because it deals not only with watersoluble waste, but also with the much more significant fat-soluble toxins. This restores the body’s self-healing powers to full capacity, thereby improving our ability to perform – even as we grow older.

Panchakarma is unique in its healing and preventative health benefits.

It enhances physical and spiritual wellbeing, promotes mental clarity, has a generally rejuvenating effect, increases vitality, strengthens the immune system and helps prevent disease. Your vital energies are balanced.

The treatment is particularly recommended for chronic disorders such as rheumatism, gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic disorders, insomnia, headaches, migraines, vegetative or psychosomatic disorders, unspecific pain, allergies and to reduce the level of environmental toxins in the body.

All Panchakarma treatments begin with a diagnosis and are conducted in two parts. The preparatory treatment provides the basis for the detoxification process. Its deeply harmonising effects unfold during the main treatment, which is supported by soothing Ayurvedic massages, heat therapy, Ushnodaka therapy, herbal medicine, Yoga, qigong and meditation are further elements of Panchakarma, which is available as a 7, 10, 14 or 21-day package.

Workshop with Swami Sacinandana – Tree of Life Retreat Recharge, find yourself and gain strength for whatever lies ahead – at the Tree of Life Retreat.

The weekend is an invitation to all who seek new impulses for a holistic life and wish to learn how to draw from their own internal energy source or bhakti (devotion). A robust ‘tree of life’ is needed to find happy repose at the centre of the daily upheavals confronting us in the shape of time pressure, stress and countless obligations. Creating such robustness is the aim of our Tree of Life Retreat.

The ‘Tree of Life’ concept is based on ancient Indian teachings and has been practised for millennia. They include the Vedic scriptures forming the starting point for various other Indian traditions and fields of knowledge.

The retreat offers a stimulating mix of theory and practice. During theory sessions, participants learn how to strengthen the four main elements of the Tree of Life, namely body, mind, spirituality and compassion. Our activities will include meditation, mantra chanting and working in small groups – with Yoga sessions in between to energise and relax us. When the tree of life is strong, balance, peace and happiness can be found at any time and anywhere – even in our busy daily routines.

Sacinandana Swami has been a monk of the bhakti tradition for 42 years.
