An Exciting Year for Brookberry Farm Welcome to 2018! This New Year has arrived and promises to be another exciting one for current residents of Brookberry Farm as well as for the many new families who will move into the neighborhood this year.

Home construction will continue during 2018 in a number of areas of Brookberry Farm, and there will be several community events planned for the upcoming warm weather months, including the Kids for Kids Triathlon and the annual July 4 parade. More information about those events and others will be shared in future issues of The Farm Truck.

Whether visitors to special events or new families moving into the neighborhood, be sure to welcome everyone to Brookberry Farm!

Like much of the nation, 2018 started off with an arctic chill at Brookberry Farm!

Reminder: Neighborhood Directory Dozens of Brookberry Farm families have signed up to be part of the online directory for residents since it was introduced two years ago. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Realty continues to gather information from residents who want to be included in the resident only directory.

To be included, send an email to BrookberryFarm@BHHSCarolinas.com with the following information: name (including children’s names if you want included), address, email, and phone number. Residents can access the directory by logging into the Brookberry Farm website at BrookberryFarm.com.

Correction The Farm Truck inadvertently ran a Parade Home Award winner from Bermuda Run West in the November/December issue.

— BROOKBERRY FARM — Ronald McDonald House reports that Brookberry Farm residents sold an amazing 722 luminary kits, which raised $5,873, during the recent holiday season. Funds raised go directly to the general operation of Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem.

During 2017, Ronald McDonald House accommodated 1,155 families in its house on Hawthorne Road.

In addition, the two Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms – one at Brenner Children’s Hospital and another at Forsyth Medical Center – received a combined nearly 23,000 visits in 2017.

This is a great recipe because of its versatility. Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are easy to make for family game watching or they can be served as a “dressed up” appetizer for a formal dinner party. As a bonus, Ham and Cheese Pinwheels also make a great main course for children. Enjoy!

Ingredients • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed • 7-8 slices deli ham, cut into cubes • 8 oz. cream cheese • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar, Gruyere or Swiss cheese • 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

• 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper Instructions 1. Combine cream cheese, Dijon mustard, cubed ham, shredded cheese, and pepper.

2. On a lightly floured piece of parchment paper, roll out the puff pastry into a 10×12-inch rectangle. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over top, leaving a 1/4-inch border on both long ends.

3. Starting at a long end, roll the puff pastry into a tight log using the parchment as leverage.

Press the edges together to seal. Wrap the log in plastic wrap, and refrigerate it, seam side down, for 15-30 minutes.

4. Preheat the oven to 375˚F with racks in the upper and lower thirds. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.

5. Using a sharp knife, cut the puff pastry log into 1/2 inch slices. Arrange the rolls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 1-2 inches apart.

6. Bake until golden brown, rotating and switching the pans halfway through, about 20-25 minutes. Let cool slightly. Serve warm.

Winter Gardening Indoors

The icy pond on the cover of this month’s Farm Truck newsletter may not make you think about gardening, but there is a way to grow things at this time of the year. Modern lighting technology allows the creation of year-round growing environments for plants that are usually grown outdoors. In fact, most above ground food crops can be grown this way.

To begin growing indoors, you’ll need: a good grow light (available at local hardware stores), containers, soil (start with fresh soil from a bag to avoid disease and insect problems), seeds, a space where you can control the environmental conditions, a small fan to circulate the air and possibly a heating pad for starting the seeds.

A good thing to start growing indoors is micro greens because they’re easy and rewarding. All you have to do is plant the seeds, lightly cover with soil and keep moist. You can harvest several crop cuttings from the same plant throughout the winter months. For you braver souls, you may want to try tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers.

Indoor growing is fun, easy, and rewarding. Get started now on your winter gardening!
