Good Evening! Each member of the BWCSF team is excited to celebrate, with each of you, our 14th Annual Black & White Cancer Survivors Foundation Black Tie Gala. We look forward with enthusiasm to continue laying the foundation to fulfill the mission envisioned fourteen years ago; to raise cancer awareness, especially in local minority communities that medical research shows are disproportionately affected by breast and prostate cancer despite fundamental breakthroughs.
Bill and I realized from personal experience that after cancer strikes, the healing process requires that survivors keep their faith, have a strong support system of family, friends and community, and focus more keenly on managing our personal health.
This conversation ensued at a party that my friend “D.J. Bill” Mabrey was hosting for his wife, Debra, who by then was in remission for nearly two years after her diagnosis and treatment, but still found it difficult to cope with the realities of her experience. Other survivors, including myself (for over 20 years) and my wife, Cassandra, (who had two bouts with cancer) were in attendance. We found this casual sharing of information and experiences was cathartic. The party and conversation certainly helped; but the puppy given to Debra by Bill was the antidote she needed to get back into gear. She became engaged by volunteering in supporting organizations dedicated to improving public awareness. At that party with 120 attendees, Bill and I decided to make this an annual event “in celebration of life” of community cancer survivors, their families and the business community. We assessed our individual and collective strengths to determine how we could bring this endeavor to the wider community. It is a blessing to arrive at this evening of our 14th Annual Black and White Cancer Survivors Foundation Black Tie Gala!
Our message is simple: More birthdays can be celebrated each year when our citizens practice preventive care, get scheduled screenings, consult with health care providers, and use cancer support systems and agencies. So our mission is clear: We aspire to further educate, encourage early cancer screening; to promote the benefits of preventive health care and maintenance and to provide much-needed resources to local cancer focused organizations for continued research and support services to the community.
The partnership that Bill and I forged around this undertaking may have resulted from serendipity, but it is no accident that supporters have taken up this cause to help ensure many more birthdays in our communities. Both individuals and businesses have answered that call. We appreciate all of the generous support from our sponsors and supporters.
With certainty, each of you can expect our extremely motivated team of dynamic community activists to continue working to explore the best practices that further engage the community and this auspicious endeavor.
Thank you again for joining us in this “celebration of life”. Now go on and…
