Market & Johnson Employee Newsletter Spring/Summer 2025

MARKET MATTERS

As we move through the Summer of 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve shared this year. The winter months brought a slower-than-usual start with a reduction in manhours, but thanks to the resilience and dedication of our teams, we’ve rebounded strongly. This summer is shaping up to be one of the busiest and most diverse seasons we’ve seen in recent memory, and I’m proud of the progress we continue to make.

Our focus this season remains on delivering quality projects across a broad spectrum of work. School construction continues to be a cornerstone of our efforts, and we are actively engaged on sites for Eau Claire, Norwalk Ontario Wilton, Hudson, Abbotsford and Onalaska Schools. These projects not only showcase our craftsmanship, but they also reflect our ongoing commitment to creating lasting value for the communities we serve.

One of the most significant projects currently underway is the $150 million Woodbury PFAS project, which is now in full swing. This effort involves the implementation of emerging PFAS treatment technology, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this important and evolving field.

Progress continues on the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) structure as Market & Johnson crews complete the final mat slab pour! Once finished, the GAC structure will suppport up to 50 high-capacity water filtration vessels—a critical step toward enhancing water quality and treatment capacity in Woodbury.

The scale and complexity of this project demonstrate our ability to take on challenging, high-impact work with confidence. I’m also personally excited to share that this August we hosted our first-ever “She Builds” program, an initiative designed to introduce young girls to careers in the construction industry and open doors for women entering the field. I’m honored that Market & Johnson is taking a leadership role in supporting the next generation of builders.

Investing in future talent continues to be a priority. This summer, we welcomed 11 interns, each gaining valuable experience in both the field and the office. At the same time, our apprenticeship programs continue to grow, helping to ensure we have the skilled workforce necessary to meet our future needs and uphold the standards that define our company.

Our strategic planning remains a driving force behind our momentum, guiding our expansion across all divisions. Last year, we earned the #311 spot on the ENR Top 400 Contractors list, a reflection of your collective effort and excellence. This recognition encourages us to keep building on that foundation and to strengthen the partnerships that are central to our continued success.

Looking ahead, we will soon say farewell to five long-term team members: Mike Seichter, Rod Plenge, Chris Anderson, Darren Felix, and Mark Hintz, who will all retire between this fall and year’s end. Each has contributed decades of leadership, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to Market & Johnson. Like so many who have retired before them, their influence is woven into the fabric of our company, and we are deeply grateful for their service.

As we wrap up summer push, I want to thank each of you for your ongoing dedication, skill, and drive. The road ahead will be busy, no doubt, but it will also be full of opportunity. I’m confident that, working together, we will meet every challenge and continue to move this company forward.

Here’s to a successful and impactful fall!

PROJECTS

UW-RIVER FALLS SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CENTER

RIVER FALLS, WI

In the summer of 2023, the existing Hagestad Hall at the UWRF campus was fully demolished. M&J’s role began in August of 2023 and is anticipated to wind down by August 2025. The campus will have limited staff and instruction in the building in Fall 2025 as they finish their move-in process and will be fully operational spring semester (January 2026). The contract value will finish close to $72M and cover nearly 136,000 SF of new building.

SOMERSET PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

SOMERSET, WI

Market & Johnson was hired by the Somerset School District as their Construction Manager in the Fall of 2023 to manage the construction of their new Performing Arts Center. The project consists of constructing a new 22,000 SF addition. This addition will consist of a 600-seat auditorium and stage area. The addition will also incorporate new auxiliary areas, including a new scene shop, dressing areas, and a new art gallery viewing area. This work began August of 2024 and will be substantially complete in the Fall of 2025.

ONALASKA COMMUNITY CENTER

The Onalaska Community Center is a new 16,000 SF building that consists of a gymnasium, multiple large conference rooms, kitchen, offices, small lounge spaces, and bathrooms. The site has two parking lots for event parking with irrigation/landscaping surrounding all sides of the building. This new facility will be a staple to the community, replacing the old/failing community center before it for 50 years. The city is already using the space as we were able to turn it over to them 3 months ahead of schedule.

SOUTHWEST HEALTH MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING

PLATTEVILLE, WI

The new me dical office building for Southwest Health is a 2-story, steel structure, adding 35,000 SF to their campus. The makeup of this building will be steel main frame, cold-formed framing with masonry and metal panels exterior. The site plan has parking for over 200 parking stalls and a large rain garden. Departments occupying this space will be eye care, dermatology, ENT, therapy, and massage spaces. 2024 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT HERO AWARD

Last November, we proudly participated in the 9th Annual JA Heroes Gala hosted by Junior Achievement of Wisconsin Northwest Area in Eau Claire. This event held special significance for us, as our very own Kevin Renley was honored as the 2024 JA Hero. We couldn’t be more proud of Kevin and his dedication to strengthening our team and enriching our communities. The evening was a fantastic celebration of Junior Achievement’s impactful work, Kevin’s well-deserved recognition, and the incredible volunteers from Market & Johnson who dedicate their time to inspire and empower local youth through JA’s programs.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, last year’s gala raised an impressive $50,000, supporting vital initiatives in financial literacy and workplace readiness for our students. We look forward to continuing this important work and celebrating future successes together.

POWER OF PERCEPTION

In April, Market & Johnson was honored to host mentees and students from Power of Perception, Inc. at our Eau Claire office. Power of Perception is a local mentorship program that provides resources for 6th-12th grade African American and biracial students within the Eau Claire Area School District.

We had a wonderful evening with students from POP’s Eau Claire Area School District-wide chapter, sharing a delicious dinner from Karl’s Bar-B-Q Express, assisting with homework, and showcasing career opportunities in the construction industry through engaging hands-on activities and a fun scavenger hunt. It was a rewarding experience to connect with these talented students.

BUILD MY FUTURE

In May, our La Crosse team had the opportunity to engage with local high school students at the 3rd Annual Build My Future hands-on career fair at the Onalaska Omni Center. This inspiring event attracted 1,400 students from 45 schools across Wisconsin and Minnesota, showcasing the diverse opportunities available in the skilled trades. Our team enjoyed making meaningful connections with many young aspiring professionals and sharing insights into rewarding careers in the trades. We are proud to be part of this impactful event and look forward to continuing our involvement in years to come.

MARISSA HARMON

Estimator

Eau Claire Office

WE ASKED...

Q. Tell us a little about yourself.

DETAILED

Marissa Harmon is a May 2025 UW Stout construction management graduate from Colfax. She has been an intern for us since June 2024. She was a Field Engineer intern at UW-River Falls Science & Technology Innovation Center and then transitioned to a preconstruction intern during this past school year. We look forward to having Marissa join the preconstruction team full time as an Estimator, where her attention to detail, organization and passion for construction will shine. We are excited to have Marissa on the M&J team!

I grew up in Colfax, WI, where I was the youngest, and only girl, of three siblings, which definitely made for a fun and lively childhood. I now live in Elk Mound with my boyfriend, Chase, and our 10-month-old yellow lab, Buck, who keeps things exciting with his nonstop playful energy and his love for getting into everything he shouldn’t!

Q. When I’m not at work you can find me...

I’m usually enjoying the outdoors in one way or another. In the spring, we love taking Buck out shed hunting. We started training him this year and he has somehow already found more sheds than me! Once summer hits, I spend as much time as I can on the river, playing slow pitch softball or hanging out with my family. Whether I’m camping, kayaking, or just soaking up the sun, you’ll always find me outdoors. Besides my crazy outdoor adventures, I have 2 nephews under 2 that keep me laughing, on my toes, and remind me not to take life too seriously.

Q. Why are you excited to join M&J?

I’ve had the opportunity to intern here over the past year, and that experience truly confirmed how much I enjoy being part of the M&J team. From day one, I’ve felt welcomed and supported, and I’ve seen firsthand how much this company cares. This is clearly seen through community involvement and the genuine care to build meaningful relationships both within the organization and with clients. The environment, openness to new ideas, and the team’s hard work have all made a lasting impression on me. I’m genuinely excited to officially join the team and continue applying my knowledge. I look forward to learning, growing, and taking on new challenges alongside people I respect and enjoy working with.

TAKE A MOMENT TO WELCOME MARISSA TO THE TEAM!

Her first day was June 2, 2025. You will find her in the Preconstruction Offices in the Eau Claire.

I grew up in Eau Claire with my parents and three older siblings. I do not have any pets, but my girlfriend recently got a cat, and he has discovered how to play fetch. I will be living in Eau Claire as I start my full time position with M&J.

Q. When I’m not at work you can find me... You can find me fishing on any lake, river, or stream in the local area. If I am not out fishing, you’ll either find me out and about with my girlfriend or spending time with friends and family playing board games or Nintendo switch.

Q. Lessons learned from prior work experience.

Showing up every day with a positive attitude makes for a more enjoyable and productive work experience for both you and those around you. The small details matter and spending more time in the planning phases saves time and headaches in the long run.

Q. What are you looking forward to/why you are excited to join M&J?

I look forward to joining a company with a strong team mindset that shares similar goals and values as myself. I am also looking forward to meeting more of the team and building lasting relationships. I have enjoyed my past two years interning with M&J and I am looking forward to joining the team full time!

STILLWATER OFFICE NEWS

As anyone with children can attest, the beginning of summer is exciting because the warm weather begins, and most importantly, it marks the end of yet another school year. Many of us felt anxious about what was ahead for our various school projects during the summer. The Somerset team has been occupied with the new Performing Arts Center, which is the final project of the district’s several initiatives we’ve been able to complete since we started in 2021. The facility will be a cutting-edge space, designed by a top-notch team of architects and consultants. The campus has certainly been elevated due to the new facility and stadium upgrades from last year.

Not to be outdone, we’ll be completing the last of a three-year project for the Prescott School District. This latest scope of work includes tasks that weren’t originally scheduled, but with the use of project savings, we’ll be updating restroom partitions, upgrading classroom sinks, and installing new bleachers at the Middle School.

And let’s not forget—the Hudson School District is a behemoth. It’s an understatement to say these projects have been challenging. The work involves major renovations and additions to three schools, which are scattered throughout Hudson and North Hudson. To increase the difficulty, the team has been working tirelessly since last summer, collaborating closely with faculty and students. Even with nearly a year of consistent effort, we still need to allocate roughly $16 million this summer. Given the demands on our labor force and subcontractors, this task will be a major undertaking.

Fortunately, these projects aren’t unique to our industry, so they will get done, and we’ll provide our clients with an exceptional experience in the process.

KATIE SCHULZ

daughter of Beckie & Jeff Schulz of Onalaska, WI. Katie graduated from Western Technical College in the Graphic Design program and decided to pursue a second degree in Business at Western Technical College. Katie aspires to launch a career in social media and marketing where she can drive promotional campaigns and contribute to a company’s growth through digital platforms.

LA CROSSE HAPPENINGS

PEYTON SNYDER

son of Josh & Sarah Snyder of Mondovi, WI. Peyton graduated from Mondovi High School last year and has been attending UW La Crosse. He is pursuing a Physical, Adaptive & Health Education major. His career goal is to become a well-rounded educator coach and advocate for inclusive physical activity and lifelong health. He plans to become a Physical Education teacher with a focus on both general and adaptive PE.

The team has been moving full speed ahead this summer, kicking things off with the Build My Future event, where an impressive 1,400 students participated in hands-on construction experiences. Events like these continue to strengthen community ties and fuel the industry’s next generation of builders.

On the project front, it’s been a season of significant milestones. Onalaska Middle School is on track to wrap up by the end of summer, and the Onalaska Community Center was turned over on July 3. Meanwhile, the Sparta DOT Rest Stop is entering its final phase with completion set for late September.

Looking farther down the road, major efforts like the Norwalk Ontario Wilton Addition and Remodel and the Richland Center Hospital are progressing steadily toward 2025 completion dates. The Midwest Medical Center Surgery project in Galena, Illinois is also in motion, with an anticipated wrap in April 2026. Several healthcare and education projects are currently underway or breaking ground soon, including the Black River Memorial Hospital Pharmacy Remodel (finishing this fall), Southwest Health’s OR5 and Medical Office Building efforts, and remodels at Mineral Point and Abbotsford. The Western Technical College Auto Shop will be completed this September, and Xcel Dodge Center work began in May.

On the horizon, the team is preparing for an ambitious $70–80 million project with the Sparta School District, targeted to begin construction in 2026. Additional work is also in early planning or budgeting stages, including projects with Vernon Telephone, Mile Bluff Medical Center, Corta Development, and Jackson County Highway Department, which could total up to $30 million.

As always, we’re looking ahead, pursuing multiple hard-bid opportunities and planning for additional work in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. With a packed schedule, strong community engagement, and a steady stream of upcoming opportunities, the team is keeping the momentum going and continuing to deliver high quality results across the region.
