ROOTED IN RESEARCH

Innovative and full of heart, Mark Day School nurtures each child to pursue their curiosity, think critically, embrace challenge with courage and joy, and work in partnership with others to build more caring and inclusive communities.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Mark Day School Community,
As you may know, I was away from campus on sabbatical for the last few months of the 2024-25 school year. One of the pleasures of my summer was going back to view the graduation speeches that our 8th graders made in June. As has been the tradition each year, this graduating class seized the opportunity to share something personal of themselves, in the process reflecting unique, important elements of Mark Day School.
One student reflected, “Life only gets exciting when we step outside our comfort zones, because it’s in the challenges that we discover what we’re capable of.” We see our students live that truth in countless ways: wrestling with a complex math problem, revising an essay until it carries an argument with both confidence and conviction, and, just as importantly, knowing when to ask for help from a teacher or a fresh perspective from a classmate. That balance between productive struggle and seeking support is a hallmark of learning at Mark Day.
Another student experienced a similar lesson through a different lens, describing how their mistakes became stepping stones: “Mark Day has taught me to sit with my mistakes, get to know them, and most importantly, take steps to evolve. I was always faced with an opportunity to grow and learn a new lesson.” And still another graduate shared how they overcame perfectionism, coming to realize that not having all the answers was not a weakness, but a gift: “I discovered
that struggle is part of the process…not knowing everything fosters wonder and creativity.”
These voices help to capture part of what distinguishes Mark Day graduates. Our students lead with curiosity, persevere when they encounter obstacles, are willing to stumble, and have developed the genuine confidence that enables them to pursue ongoing growth in a world characterized by complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. In the pages that follow, you’ll see how research informs teaching and learning at Mark Day and, ultimately, how our students not only encounter the world but how they shape the world and the communities in which they live.
None of this happens by chance. It happens because of you. Your generosity fuels the professional learning that keeps our teachers at the forefront of educational practice, the tools and materials that turn big ideas into hands-on experiences, and the environment in which every child is known, challenged, and supported. Your investment is an important part of every student’s story. On behalf of our faculty, staff, and most of all our students, thank you for making this work possible.
Best regards,

Joe Harvey Head of School

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
To Our Mark Day School Community,
Thank you for your generosity and unwavering dedication. Your support has enriched the student experience, and we are proud to highlight your contributions in our latest annual report.
The theme of this year’s annual report is “Rooted in Research.” Research, at its heart, fuels progress, and your contributions are the foundation upon which we build programs and initiatives that inspire growth and discovery.
To our Mark Day Fund donors: Your steadfast support has sustained our educational programs and enabled innovative projects to flourish. During the 2024-2025 school year, contributions from more than 500 members of this community exceeded $1,350,000—an extraordinary testament to your belief in our mission.
To our supporters of the Campaign for Mark Day School Faculty: Your early gifts and pledges are paving the way for a stronger future. This endowment will ensure long-term investment in compensation, professional development, and the intern teacher program. These are all cornerstones of excellence that will nurture our faculty and support teaching and learning for generations to come.
To our Spring Fundraiser sponsors and donors: Your partnership brought vibrancy to our “Greatest School on Earth” event, raising more than $150,000 in unrestricted donations and more than $160,000 for the “Loud and Clear” Fund-a-Need initiative. You are demonstrating how collective effort can transform ideas into reality.
To our volunteers: You exemplify the collaborative spirit that fuels our work. By sharing your time and expertise, you’ve created opportunities that shape the lives of our students and educators in meaningful and lasting ways.
Each one of you plays a vital role in helping us stay rooted in the principles of curiosity, research, and innovation. Your contributions support our mission of nurturing each child to pursue their curiosity, think critically, embrace challenge with courage and joy, and work in partnership with others to build more caring and inclusive communities.
Together, we continue to grow, guided by research and inspired by the possibilities it reveals.
With gratitude,

Director of Development

ROOTED IN RESEARCH? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE
At Mark Day School, research is not a separate activity—it’s a driving force integrated into everything we do. It shapes the design of our curriculum, informs the layout of our classrooms, and guides how we engage with students day to day. We ground our decisions in the latest findings from cognitive science, developmental psychology, and educational theory, ensuring that every aspect of our program reflects a deep understanding of how children grow, learn, and thrive.
But research doesn’t just influence how we teach, it’s also something our students actively learn to do themselves. Starting in Kindergarten, teachers encourage students
to ask thoughtful questions and think critically about what they are learning. As they move through the grades, they learn to seek credible sources, distinguish fact from opinion, and build evidence-based arguments. In this way, we’re not only applying research at a strategic and programmatic level—we’re also cultivating the skills of inquiry and critical thinking within our students themselves.
In the sections that follow, we share three ways that research comes to life at Mark Day—illustrating how we translate big ideas into meaningful, concrete experiences that help students become confident, capable, and curious learners.

Structuring Our Program for Growth, Not Limits

How students see themselves as learners profoundly shapes who they become. That’s why we’ve designed our program to steer away from self-limiting labels and instead encourage each child to accumulate rather than discard areas of interest/skill/capabilities and nurture each child’s authentic confidence--the kind that comes through overcoming just-right challenge. It’s common for children to adopt simple
declarations like “I’m good at math” or “I’m not a writer.” These statements may sound benign—even self-aware—but they often reflect and reinforce fixed ideas about who a child is and what they’re capable of. Over time, these labels can become limiting. Even positive ones can come with invisible boundaries: the “creative” child might hesitate to try STEM projects, while the “math kid” might avoid the arts.

What the research tells us
Our approach draws on decades of research about self-concept and growth mindset. Studies show that children begin forming self-perceptions as early as age three, and by elementary school, they’re already comparing themselves to others in academic and social domains. While this is a natural part of development, it becomes limiting when labels are reinforced, intentionally or not, by the adults around them.
Research by psychologist Carol Dweck and others has shown that praising children for innate traits like intelligence can actually reduce motivation and performance over time. Children praised for “being smart” may avoid challenges that could risk that identity. In contrast, when we praise effort, strategy, and persistence, we help children build resilience and a mindset oriented toward growth.

How this informs our program
At Mark Day, we embed a growth mindset into the structure of school life. It’s one of seven metacognitive skills—alongside curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, community mindset, and self-understanding/self-direction—that are integrated across the curriculum and explicitly reflected in student report cards.
From the earliest grades, students are encouraged to view mistakes as opportunities and to embrace the power of yet—as in, “I can’t do this…yet.” Students learn to see obstacles as temporary conditions—in fact, necessary steps on the way to new
skills. Teachers are attuned to the early signs of self-labeling and respond with language and strategies that reframe the moment. As students grow, they encounter new opportunities to explore different roles, interests, and ways of learning. In middle school, students choose from a wide array of electives and work in varied groupings—solo, paired, and collaborative—ensuring that no one is boxed into a single identity or subject area.
We also make space for exploration beyond the classroom. From lunchtime clubs to hands-on labs to community experiences, we routinely encourage students to try something new—and to discover something new about themselves in the process.
THE MARK DAY FUND OUR ANNUAL FUND
The Mark Day Fund powers key programs thanks to broad community support. Unrestricted gifts to the Mark Day Fund play a critical role in delivering the dynamic, hands-on education that defines a Mark Day School experience. Contributions to the 2024–2025 fund support outstanding faculty, fuel cross-disciplinary learning, and enrich daily school life for every student.
This year, more than 500 donors—including current families, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends—came together to strengthen the school through their generous Mark Day Fund gifts.
2024–2025 Mark Day Fund Highlights:
100% participation from the Board of Trustees
95% participation from current families
Nearly 100 alumni families and friends gave a combined $45,000
Nearly 80 grandparents contributed more than $140,000
These contributions provide vital resources that allow Mark Day School to respond to needs in real time and invest in what matters most: students. We are deeply grateful for the continued generosity of our community.

WHY WE GIVE THE BOORMAN FAMILY
For the Boorman family, Mark Day School is more than just a place where Trent ‘03 and Margot ‘06 grew up—it’s a cornerstone of their identity as a family. Though their kids are now alumni, their commitment to supporting the school remains unwavering.
“We first heard about Mark Day through our preschool,” Bev recalled. From their very first parent evening, they were hooked. “We thought the walls talked to us,” they laugh. After hearing the Head of School speak at an admission event, they just said, ‘We’re here.’”
The school experience was transformative not only for Trent and Margot but for Bev and Rolly as well. “We grew up there—not only our kids but we did too, as parents and as people,” they shared. Their years at Mark Day are filled with cherished memories, like the time the whole community came together on a rainy day to plant over 1,000 tulip bulbs. “There must have been one hundred of us out there. It was pouring rain, but it was such a fun time.” Bev even served as the Family Association President when Trent and Margot were current students.
Beyond the fun, the family treasures the values the school instilled in their children.
Trent, they recall, developed a lifelong curiosity about the world, earning a reputation as the kid who “wanted to know why the sky is blue” because of his relentless questions. Margot and Trent both learned the golden rule—the importance of kindness and respect for others—a lesson they carry with them to this day.
When asked why they continue to give back as Mark Day Fund donors and by including the school in their estate plans, the answer comes easily. “Mark Day is a place where kids can find themselves,” Bev explained. “The experience changes lives— kids’ and parents.’ When you are grateful, there’s nothing better than giving back. If I could make a difference in just one child’s life, whether by volunteering, donating, or simply helping, I could sleep at night.”
Their dedication to service has always been a team effort, and Mark Day became a natural extension of that ethos. Trent and Margot are following in their parents’ footsteps. They are both loyal Mark Day Fund supporters themselves, and Trent served on the Board as the Alumni Trustee for four years.
For this family, their journey with Mark Day isn’t just a chapter. It’s a legacy.

Learning to Conduct Research From An Early Age

In a world flooded with information, learning how to research is one of the most critical skills a student can develop. At Mark Day, research is a foundational skill set that begins in Kindergarten and grows with each student year by year. Research nurtures curiosity and independence. It helps students ask thoughtful questions, analyze sources,
and distinguish fact from opinion. It empowers them to explore new topics, form evidence-based arguments, and communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence. Perhaps most importantly, it teaches them how to learn—an ability that will serve them far beyond their years in school.

“ ...research
is not about simply finding answers. It’s about learning to ask better questions, navigate diverse media, and synthesize insights across disciplines.
What the research tells us
There is strong consensus in education that introducing research early—and revisiting it often—supports both academic and personal development. According to the Library of Congress, working with primary sources encourages students to move from surface-level observation to deeper inquiry. It also builds historical empathy and the ability to hold multiple perspectives.
Frameworks from institutions like Indiana University define research as a process of iterative questioning and strategic exploration. In this view, research is not about simply finding answers. It’s about learning to ask better questions, navigate diverse media, and synthesize insights across disciplines.
As information literacy experts Michael B. Eisenberg and Kathleen L. Spitzer point out, today’s students need more than just access to information—they need the skills to evaluate its accuracy, purpose, and relevance. Research is not just an academic exercise, but a life skill and a civic responsibility.
How this informs our program
Our students begin developing these skills from their very first days at school. In Kindergarten, they learn to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction and explore where information comes from. In 1st grade, they begin using digital databases like PebbleGo, developing early habits of curiosity, source evaluation, and media literacy.
These skills build steadily over time. Students research insects, endangered species, and keystone animals and learn to cross-check facts, ask who is telling the story, and understand how editing and publishing shape what we read.
By middle school, students are ready to conduct more complex research on, for example, historical events, scientific theories, and works of literature using primary sources, media analysis, and structured note-taking. In 8th grade, students take on a signature experience in Media Literacy Week, when 8th graders study the media they consume and create an original, research-based piece of media that conveys to an audience an important message about media in our society. They share their video and describe their process to the entire 8th grade class and a panel of faculty and admin. team members, building on their years of experience presenting their ideas in front of a group. Through this work, students become not just critical consumers of information, but thoughtful creators as well.
ENDOWMENT
The endowment supports teacher salaries and professional development, brings socio-economic diversity that benefits every child, and keeps the school secure in volatile times.
Endowment funds generate income through the school’s careful investment and support the school in perpetuity. The endowment principal remains intact each year as the school uses only a portion of the return generated to fund initiatives, with the spend rate ranging between 3% and 4% annually over the past several years.
Mark Day School’s endowment contributed more than $485,000 to the operating budget for the 2024-25 school year. That means that the earnings currently lower tuition by approximately $1,250 each year for each and every student.
We are especially grateful to donors who choose to support the endowment as they are providing for the school’s future. In addition to the Unrestricted Endowment, the school has several named funds with income restricted to the following areas.

GREATEST SCHOOL ON EARTH GALA
& AUCTION
Step Right Up! This year, the magic of the circus came to life at The Clubhouse at Peacock Gap, where more than 300 guests gathered under the big top for a spectacular evening of music, dancing, and dazzling generosity. From thrilling live auction bids to a rousing round of paddle-raising for Fund-a-Need, the crowd truly stole the show—supporting vital upgrades to our amphitheater and classroom audio systems, as well as exciting new equipment for the Creativity Lab. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our ringmasters—sponsors, auction donors, bidders, and volunteers—the Family Association raised a net total of $300,000, with $150,000 dedicated to the Fund-a-Need initiative.

ROOTED IN RESEARCH

Implementing a Hands-On Approach
Hands-on, project-based learning (PBL) is more than an instructional strategy at Mark Day—it’s a mindset that places students at the center of their learning. Rather than passively receiving information, our students engage actively: they build, test, revise, reflect, and connect ideas
to the real world. It’s the difference between reading about sustainability versus building a model of a sustainable city, memorizing the parts of the body versus constructing one from paper, and writing about fermentation versus making it happen—one jar of kimchi at a time.

What the research tells us
A growing body of research confirms what educators and students alike have long experienced: hands-on learning leads to deeper and more durable understanding. A meta-analysis of 225 studies found that active learning significantly increases performance and reduces failure rates. Neuroscience research helps explain why: when students manipulate materials, their sensory and motor brain regions engage, strengthening memory and understanding. In physics education, for example, one researcher found that students in active-learning environments had a 48% gain in conceptual understanding—more than double that of students in lecture-based settings. Other studies have shown that hands-on learning improves executive function in young children and supports diverse learning needs through movement, creativity, and real-world relevance. Literacy researcher Anne Haas Dyson put it simply: “Kids don’t respond well to sitting still [at] their desks and listening…We have to give them more open-ended activities that allow them the space they need to make sense of things.”
How this informs our program
We design learning experiences that are interactive, collaborative, and rooted in inquiry. Our classrooms and outdoor spaces reflect this philosophy. For example, the Creativity Lab offers tools, materials, and time for students to prototype and build and our gardens are living classrooms where students explore biology, sustainability, and responsibility.
In 1st grade, students dive into the human body through creative modeling and storytelling. In 5th grade, they design and race derby cars, learning about force and friction along the way. In 7th grade, they study fermentation by actually fermenting foods, applying science in a tangible—and edible—way. And in 8th grade, they take on an egg drop engineering challenge that brings physics to life through design, iteration, and experimentation.

Across all grade levels, students experience themselves as creators and problem-solvers. They ask questions, test hypotheses, revise ideas, and reflect on outcomes. And perhaps most importantly, they begin to understand not just what they’re learning—but why it matters. They carry this mindset and motivation with them, building a lifelong love of learning.
