ACADEMIC WORK

Orkney Island Lodge & Spa

Orkney Island, Scotland

Rock is defining feature in the Orkney Islands, Scotland and has influenced architecture in the area for thousands of years. With this in mind, the approach of the project was to design a lodge to become a part of the rock it rests on. I attempted to express the sensation that the lodge has always existed there, removing the elment of time.

The lodge reflects the peninsula’s edge by embedding itself under the grass and exposing the south faces which open to scenic views of the ocean.

The overall design is dictated largely by the harsh climate. The southern orientation allows for solar control, the embedded masses provides additional insulation from the ground and reduces building facade area exposed to wind.

LODGE APPROACH

Euromaidan

Memorial and Museum

Kiev, Ukraine

The project is a memorial and museum design for the Euromaidan protests that occurred during 2013. It explores architecture’s ability to memorialize the Euromaidan event through different forms of vitality which are expressed through light, space, and materials.

Each space takes inspiration from a different moment in time during the Euromaidan protest, culminating in a building design that creates a sequence of constantly changing experiences that affect the observer in different ways.

ACADEMIC WORK #3

Competition - 3rd Prize of 200 Entries

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

This proposal questions the act of viewing by selectively revealing different elements of the landscape view. As one enters the pavilion the vision to the near ground, far ground, sky, and horizon are gradually revealed, allowing each element of the landscape to be experienced and taken individually in an attempt to obtain a better appreciation for the natural elements.

The pavilion is Inspired by nomadic African tribes, expressing a transitory state and a respect for the natural world through the use of modular construction, naturally occurring timber, locally made fabrics and a structural system that touches the ground lightly. The visitor is also elevated above the landscape, limiting ground disturbance.

Emulating the natural curved symmetry of the hill, the lookout pavilion crowns the peak becoming a prominent landmark from a far, and a reminder for thoughtfulness of the natural world.
