Hoewel het multiculturalisme debat gaande blijft, is, mijn inziens, het streven naar gelijke rechten in zekere zin eenzelfde zoektocht als het verwerven van speciale rechten. Beide zijn zoektochten naar een samenleving waarin ieder zijn eigen leven kan leiden, ongeacht afkomst
of seksuele oriëntatie. Het lijkt dan ook de religieuze, conservatieve groepering te zijn in de Verenigde Staten die de heteronormativiteit en de daarbij horende traditionele verhoudingen tussen man en vrouw en/of wit en zwart willen houden voor wat het is, wat mooi wordt verwoord in het citaat bovenaan dit artikel. 1
